Abstract: Structural redundancy is an interesting point in
seismic design of structures. Initially, the structural redundancy is
described as indeterminate degree of a system. Although many definitions are presented for redundancy in structures, recently the
definition of structural redundancy has been related to the configuration of structural system and the number of lateral load
transferring directions in the structure. The steel frames with infill walls are general systems in the constructing of usual residential buildings in some countries. It is
obviously declared that the performance of structures will be affected by adding masonry infill walls. In order to investigate the effect of
infill walls on the redundancy of the steel frame which constructed
with masonry walls, the components of redundancy including redundancy variation index, redundancy strength index and
redundancy response modification factor were extracted for the
frames with masonry infills. Several steel frames with typical storey number and various numbers of bays were designed and considered.
The redundancy of frames with and without infill walls was evaluated by proposed method. The results showed the presence of infill causes increase of redundancy.
Abstract: This article presents a resistorless current-mode firstorder allpass filter based on second generation current controlled current conveyors (CCCIIs). The features of the circuit are that: the pole frequency can be electronically controlled via the input bias current: the circuit description is very simple, consisting of 2 CCCIIs and single grounded capacitor, without any external resistors and component matching requirements. Consequently, the proposed circuit is very appropriate to further develop into an integrated circuit. Low input and high output impedances of the proposed configuration enable the circuit to be cascaded in current-mode without additional current buffers. The PSpice simulation results are depicted. The given results agree well with the theoretical anticipation. The application example as a current-mode quadrature oscillator is included.
Abstract: This paper presents a CFD analysis of the flow around
a 30° inclined flat plate of infinite span. Numerical predictions have
been compared to experimental measurements, in order to assess the
potential of the finite volume code of determining the aerodynamic
forces acting on a flat plate invested by a fluid stream of infinite
extent.
Several turbulence models and spatial node distributions have
been tested and flow field characteristics in the neighborhood of the
flat plate have been numerically investigated, allowing the
development of a preliminary procedure to be used as guidance in
selecting the appropriate grid configuration and the corresponding
turbulence model for the prediction of the flow field over a twodimensional
inclined plate.
Abstract: A novel methodology has been used to design an
evaporator coil of a refrigerant. The methodology used is through a
complete Computer Aided Design /Computer Aided Engineering
approach, by means of a Computational Fluid Dynamic/Finite
Element Analysis model which is executed many times for the
thermal-fluid exploration of several designs' configuration by an
commercial optimizer. Hence the design is carried out automatically
by parallel computations, with an optimization package taking the
decisions rather than the design engineer. The engineer instead takes
decision regarding the physical settings and initializing of the
computational models to employ, the number and the extension of the
geometrical parameters of the coil fins and the optimization tools to
be employed. The final design of the coil geometry found to be better
than the initial design.
Abstract: Double heterogeneity of randomly located pebbles in
the core and Coated Fuel Particles (CFPs) in the pebbles are specific
features in pebble bed reactors and usually, because of difficulty to
model with MCNP code capabilities, are neglected. In this study,
characteristics of HTR-10, Tsinghua University research reactor, are
used and not only double heterogeneous but also truncated CFPs and
Pebbles are considered.Firstly, 8335 CFPs are distributed randomly
in a pebble and then the core of reactor is filled with those pebbles
and graphite pebbles as moderator such that 57:43 ratio of fuel and
moderator pebbles is established.Finally, four different core
configurations are modeled. They are Simple Cubic (SC) structure
with truncated pebbles,SC structure without truncated pebble, and
Simple Hexagonal(SH) structure without truncated pebbles and SH
structure with truncated pebbles. Results like effective multiplication
factor (Keff), critical height,etc. are compared with available data.
Abstract: Presents a concept for a multidisciplinary process
supporting effective task transitions between different technical
domains during the architectural design stage.
A system configuration challenge is the multifunctional driven
increased solution space. As a consequence, more iteration is needed
to find a global optimum, i.e. a compromise between involved
disciplines without negative impact on development time. Since state
of the art standards like ISO 15288 and VDI 2206 do not provide a
detailed methodology on multidisciplinary design process, higher
uncertainties regarding final specifications arise. This leads to the
need of more detailed and standardized concepts or processes which
could mitigate risks.
The performed work is based on analysis of multidisciplinary
interaction, of modeling and simulation techniques. To demonstrate
and prove the applicability of the presented concept, it is applied to
the design of aircraft high lift systems, in the context of the
engineering disciplines kinematics, actuation, monitoring, installation
and structure design.
Abstract: Sharing the manufacturing facility through remote
operation and monitoring of a machining process is challenge for
effective use the production facility. Several automation tools in term
of hardware and software are necessary for successfully remote
operation of a machine. This paper presents a prototype of workpiece
holding attachment for remote operation of milling process by self
configuration the workpiece setup. The prototype is designed with
mechanism to reorient the work surface into machining spindle
direction with high positioning accuracy. Variety of parts geometry
is hold by attachment to perform single setup machining. Pin type
with array pattern additionally clamps the workpiece surface from
two opposite directions for increasing the machining rigidity.
Optimum pins configuration for conforming the workpiece geometry
with minimum deformation is determined through hybrid algorithms,
Genetic Algorithms (GA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO).
Prototype with intelligent optimization technique enables to hold
several variety of workpiece geometry which is suitable for
machining low of repetitive production in remote operation.
Abstract: The bypass exhaust system of a 160 MW combined cycle has been modeled and analyzed using numerical simulation in 2D prospective. Analysis was carried out using the commercial numerical simulation software, FLUENT 6.2. All inputs were based on the technical data gathered from working conditions of a Siemens V94.2 gas turbine, installed in the Yazd power plant. This paper deals with reduction of pressure drop in bypass exhaust system using turning vanes mounted in diverter box in order to alleviate turbulent energy dissipation rate above diverter box. The geometry of such turning vanes has been optimized based on the flow pattern at diverter box inlet. The results show that the use of optimized turning vanes in diverter box can improve the flow pattern and eliminate vortices around sharp edges just before the silencer. Furthermore, this optimization could decrease the pressure drop in bypass exhaust system and leads to higher plant efficiency.
Abstract: The waverider is proved to be a remarkably useful
configuration for hypersonic glide vehicle (HGV) in terms of the high
lift-to-drag ratio. Due to the severe aerodynamic heating and the
processing technical restriction, the sharp leading edge of waverider
should be blunted, and then the flow characteristics and the
aerodynamic performance along the trajectory will change. In this
paper, the flow characteristics of a HGV, including the rarefied gas
effect and transition phenomenon, were studied based on a reference
trajectory. A numerical simulation was carried out to study the
performance of the HGV under a typical condition.
Abstract: Transmission network expansion planning (TNEP) is
a basic part of power system planning that determines where, when
and how many new transmission lines should be added to the
network. Up till now, various methods have been presented to solve
the static transmission network expansion planning (STNEP)
problem. But in all of these methods, transmission expansion
planning considering network adequacy restriction has not been
investigated. Thus, in this paper, STNEP problem is being studied
considering network adequacy restriction using discrete particle
swarm optimization (DPSO) algorithm. The goal of this paper is
obtaining a configuration for network expansion with lowest
expansion cost and a specific adequacy. The proposed idea has been
tested on the Garvers network and compared with the decimal
codification genetic algorithm (DCGA). The results show that the
network will possess maximum efficiency economically. Also, it is
shown that precision and convergence speed of the proposed DPSO
based method for the solution of the STNEP problem is more than
DCGA approach.
Abstract: LES with mixed subgrid-scale model has been used to
simulate aerodynamic performance of hypersonic configuration. The
simulation was conducted to replicate conditions and geometry of a
model which has been previously tested. LES Model has been
successful in predict pressure coefficient with the max error 1.5%
besides afterbody. But in the high Mach number condition, it is poor in
predict ability and product 12.5% error. The calculation error are
mainly conducted by the distribution swirling. The fact of poor ability
in the high Mach number and afterbody region indicated that the
mixed subgrid-scale model should be improved in large eddied
especially in hypersonic separate region. In the condition of attach and
sideslip flight, the calculation results have waves. LES are successful
in the prediction the pressure wave in hypersonic flow.
Abstract: Bendability is constrained by maximum top roller
load imparting capacity of the machine. Maximum load is
encountered during the edge pre-bending stage of roller bending.
Capacity of 3-roller plate bending machine is specified by
maximum thickness and minimum shell diameter combinations that
can be pre-bend for given plate material of maximum width.
Commercially available plate width or width of the plate that can be
accommodated on machine decides the maximum rolling width.
Original equipment manufacturers (OEM) provide the machine
capacity chart based on reference material considering perfectly
plastic material model. Reported work shows the bendability analysis
of heavy duty 3-roller plate bending machine. The input variables for
the industry are plate thickness, shell diameter and material property
parameters, as it is fixed by the design. Analytical models of
equivalent thickness, equivalent width and maximum width based on
power law material model were derived to study the bendability.
Equation of maximum width provides bendability for designed
configuration i.e. material property, shell diameter and thickness
combinations within the machine limitations. Equivalent thicknesses
based on perfectly plastic and power law material model were
compared for four different materials grades of C-Mn steel in order
to predict the bend-ability. Effect of top roller offset on the
bendability at maximum top roller load imparting capacity is
reported.
Abstract: This paper presents the optimum design for a double
stator, cup rotor machine; a novel type of BLDC PM Machine. The optimization approach is divided into two stages: the first stage is
calculating the machine configuration using Matlab, and the second stage is the optimization of the machine using Finite Element
Modeling (FEM). Under the design specifications, the machine
model will be selected from three pole numbers, namely, 8, 10 and 12 with an appropriate slot number. A double stator brushless DC
permanent magnet machine is designed to achieve low cogging torque; high electromagnetic torque and low ripple torque.
Abstract: This paper presents an efficient method of obtaining a straight-line motion in the tool configuration space using an articulated robot between two specified points. The simulation results & the implementation results show the effectiveness of the method.
Abstract: The aerodynamics characteristics of a blended-wing body (BWB) aircraft were obtained in Universiti Teknologi MARA low speed wind tunnel. The scaled-down of BWB model consisted of a canard as its horizontal stabilizer. There were four canards with different aspect ratio used in the experiments. Canard setting angles were varied from -20q to 20q. All tests were conducted at velocity of 35 m/s, with Mach number 0.1. At low angles of attacks, the increment of lift slope for various canards aspect ratio is small and almost constant. Higher canard aspect ratio will cause higher drag. However, canard has a high effect to the moment at zero lift, CM,0.The visualization using mini tuff was performed to observe the airflow at the upper surface of canard. Abstract: The purpose of this research was to design costume by the inspiration from the configurations, colors and decorations of Thai Royal Barges. The researcher investigated the bibliographies and the important of the Thai Royal Water-Course Procession, configurations and decoration techniques of four Royal Barges history. Furthermore, the researcher combined the contemporary architecture which became part of the four costumes with four patterns in this research. The four costumes designed by applied the physical configuration of the Royal Barge with the fold techniques which create the geometry pattern that are part of the Royal Barge-s decoration and contemporary architecture. Therefore, the researcher united each identity color of the barges with each costume composed with the original patterns by adjusted new layout and resized. Lastly, the new attractive patterns appeared. Nevertheless, the beauty of Thai traditional still remain by using Thai painting figure with black and white color which are the prevalent colors for the contemporary architectures.
Abstract: On a such wide-area environment as a Grid, data
placement is an important aspect of distributed database systems. In
this paper, we address the problem of initial placement of database
no-replicated fragments in Grid architecture. We propose a graph
based approach that considers resource restrictions. The goal is to
optimize the use of computing, storage and communication
resources. The proposed approach is developed in two phases: in the
first phase, we perform fragment grouping using knowledge about
fragments dependency and, in the second phase, we determine an
efficient placement of the fragment groups on the Grid. We also
show, via experimental analysis that our approach gives solutions
that are close to being optimal for different databases and Grid
configurations.
Abstract: Pulse width modulation (PWM) techniques have been
the subject of intensive research for different industrial and power
sector applications. A large variety of methods, different in concept
and performance, have been newly developed and described. This
paper analyzes the comparative merits of Sinusoidal Pulse Width
Modulation (SPWM) and Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation
(SVPWM) techniques and the suitability of these techniques in a
Shunt Active Filter (SAF). The objective is to select the scheme that
offers effective utilization of DC bus voltage and also harmonic
reduction at the input side. The effectiveness of the PWM techniques
is tested in the SAF configuration with a non linear load. The
performance of the SAF with the SPWM and (SVPWM) techniques
are compared with respect to the THD in source current. The study
reveals that in the context of closed loop SAF control with the
SVPWM technique there is only a minor improvement in THD. The
utilization of the DC bus with SVPWM is also not significant
compared to that with SPWM because of the non sinusoidal
modulating signal from the controller in SAF configuration.
Abstract: The reluctance motor is an electric motor in which
torque is produced by the tendency of its moveable part to move to a
position where the inductance of the excited winding is maximized.
In this paper switched reluctance motors (SRMs) with two different
configurations(3-phase SRM with 4rotor poles and 6 stator poles, 4-
phase SRM with 6rotor poles and 8 stator poles) is designed by
RMxprt, and performance of them is analyzed. Efficiency and torque
of SRM for different configurations in full-load condition have been
presented. The results indicate that with correct choosing of motor
applications, maximum efficiency can be found.
Abstract: In recent years asymmetric cross section aluminum
alloy stock has been finding increasing use in various industrial manufacturing areas such as general structures and automotive
components. In these areas, components are generally required to have
complex curved configuration and, as such, a bending process is required during manufacture. Undesirable deformation in bending
processes such as flattening or wrinkling can easily occur when thin-walled sections are bent. Hence, a thorough understanding of the
bending behavior of such sections is needed to prevent these undesirable deformations. In this study, the bending behavior of
asymmetric channel section was examined using finite element analysis (FEA). Typical methods of preventing undesirable
deformation, such as asymmetric laminated elastic mandrels were included in FEA model of draw bending. Additionally, axial tension
was applied to prevent wrinkling. By utilizing the FE simulations effect of restriction dies and axial tension on undesirable deformation during the process was clarified.
