Abstract: Passive systems were born with the purpose of the
greatest exploitation of solar energy in cold climates and high
altitudes. They spread themselves until the 80-s all over the world
without any attention to the specific climate and the summer
behavior; this caused the deactivation of the systems due to a series
of problems connected to the summer overheating, the complex
management and the rising of the dust.
Until today the European regulation limits only the winter
consumptions without any attention to the summer behavior but, the
recent European EN 15251 underlines the relevance of the indoor
comfort, and the necessity of the analytic studies validation by
monitoring case studies.
In the porpose paper we demonstrate that the solar wall is an
efficient system both from thermal comfort and energy saving point
of view and it is the most suitable for our temperate climates because
it can be used as a passive cooling sistem too. In particular the paper
present an experimental and numerical analisys carried out on a case
study with nine different solar passive systems in Ancona, Italy.
We carried out a detailed study of the lodging provided by the
solar wall by the monitoring and the evaluation of the indoor
conditions.
Analyzing the monitored data, on the base of recognized models
of comfort (ISO, ASHRAE, Givoni-s BBCC), is emerged that the
solar wall has an optimal behavior in the middle seasons. In winter
phase this passive system gives more advantages in terms of energy
consumptions than the other systems, because it gives greater heat
gain and therefore smaller consumptions. In summer, when outside
air temperature return in the mean seasonal value, the indoor comfort
is optimal thanks to an efficient transversal ventilation activated from
the same wall.
Abstract: Frequent patterns are patterns such as sets of features or items that appear in data frequently. Finding such frequent patterns has become an important data mining task because it reveals associations, correlations, and many other interesting relationships hidden in a dataset. Most of the proposed frequent pattern mining algorithms have been implemented with imperative programming languages such as C, Cµ, Java. The imperative paradigm is significantly inefficient when itemset is large and the frequent pattern is long. We suggest a high-level declarative style of programming using a functional language. Our supposition is that the problem of frequent pattern discovery can be efficiently and concisely implemented via a functional paradigm since pattern matching is a fundamental feature supported by most functional languages. Our frequent pattern mining implementation using the Haskell language confirms our hypothesis about conciseness of the program. The performance studies on speed and memory usage support our intuition on efficiency of functional language.
Abstract: School homework has been synonymous with students- life in Chinese national type primary schools in Malaysia. Although many reports in the press claimed that students were burdened with too much of it, homework continues to be a common practice in national type schools that is believed to contribute to academic achievement. This study is conducted to identify the relationship between the burden of school homework and academic achievement among pupils in Chinese National Type Primary School in the state of Perak, Malaysia. A total of 284 students (142 from urban and 142 from rural) respectively were chosen as participants in this study. Variables of gender and location (urban/rural areas) has shown significant difference in student academic achievement. Female Chinese student from rural areas showed a higher mean score than males from urban area. Therefore, the Chinese language teachers should give appropriate and relevant homework to primary school students to achieve good academic performance.
Abstract: The Norwegian Military Academy (Army) has
initiated a project with the main ambition to explore possible avenues
to enhancing operational effectiveness through an increased use of
simulation-based training and exercises. Within a cost/benefit
framework, we discuss opportunities and limitations of vertical and
horizontal integration of the existing tactical training system. Vertical
integration implies expanding the existing training system to span the
full range of training from tactical level (platoon, company) to
command and staff level (battalion, brigade). Horizontal integration
means including other domains than army tactics and staff
procedures in the training, such as military ethics, foreign languages,
leadership and decision making. We discuss each of the integration
options with respect to purpose and content of training, "best
practice" for organising and conducting simulation-based training,
and suggest how to evaluate training procedures and measure
learning outcomes. We conclude by giving guidelines towards further
explorative work and possible implementation.
Abstract: Our Medicine-oriented research is based on a medical
data set of real patients. It is a security problem to share
patient private data with peoples other than clinician or hospital
staff. We have to remove person identification information
from medical data. The medical data without private data
are available after a de-identification process for any research
purposes. In this paper, we introduce an universal automatic
rule-based de-identification application to do all this stuff on an
heterogeneous medical data. A patient private identification is
replaced by an unique identification number, even in burnedin
annotation in pixel data. The identical identification is used
for all patient medical data, so it keeps relationships in a data.
Hospital can take an advantage of a research feedback based
on results.
Abstract: The objective of this research was to study the themes
of alcoholic beverage advertisements in Thailand after the enactment
of the 2008 Alcoholic Beverage Control Act. Data was collected
through textual analysis of 35 television and cinema advertisements
for alcoholic beverage products broadcast in Thailand. Nine themes
were identified, seven of which were themes that had previously been
used before the new law (i.e. power, competition, friendship,
Thainess, success, romance and safety) and two of which were new
themes (volunteerism and conservation) that were introduced as a
form of adaptation and negotiation in response to the new law.
Abstract: An application framework provides a reusable design
and implementation for a family of software systems. Frameworks
are introduced to reduce the cost of a product line (i.e., a family of
products that shares the common features). Software testing is a timeconsuming
and costly ongoing activity during the application
software development process. Generating reusable test cases for the
framework applications during the framework development stage,
and providing and using the test cases to test part of the framework
application whenever the framework is used reduces the application
development time and cost considerably. This paper introduces the
Framework Interface State Transition Tester (FIST2), a tool for
automated unit testing of Java framework applications. During the
framework development stage, given the formal descriptions of the
framework hooks, the specifications of the methods of the
framework-s extensible classes, and the illegal behavior description
of the Framework Interface Classes (FICs), FIST2 generates unitlevel
test cases for the classes. At the framework application
development stage, given the customized method specifications of
the implemented FICs, FIST2 automates the use, execution, and
evaluation of the already generated test cases to test the implemented
FICs. The paper illustrates the use of the FIST2 tool for testing
several applications that use the SalesPoint framework.
Abstract: This paper attempts to discuss the evolution of the
retrieval techniques focusing on development, challenges and trends
of the image retrieval. It highlights both the already addressed and
outstanding issues. The explosive growth of image data leads to the
need of research and development of Image Retrieval. However,
Image retrieval researches are moving from keyword, to low level
features and to semantic features. Drive towards semantic features is
due to the problem of the keywords which can be very subjective and
time consuming while low level features cannot always describe high
level concepts in the users- mind.
Abstract: There has been a growing emphasis in
communication management from simple coordination of
promotional tools to a complex strategic process. This study will
examine the current marketing communications and engagement
strategies used in addressing the key stakeholders. In the case of
fertilizer industry in Malaysia, there has been little empirical
research on stakeholder communication when major challenges
facing the modern corporation is the need to communicate its
identity, its values and products in order to distinguish itself from
competitors. The study will employ both quantitative and qualitative
methods and the use of Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to
establish a causal relationship amongst the key factors of stakeholder
communication strategies and increment in consumers-
choice/acceptance and impact on financial performance. One of the
major contributions is a conceptual framework for communication
strategies and engagement in increasing consumers- acceptance level
and the firm-s financial performance.
Abstract: The objective of the present study was to examine the
dose-response relationships between antioxidant parameters and liver
contaminant levels of Kazakhstan light crude oil (KLCO) in albino
rats. The animals were repeatedly exposed, by intraperitoneal

Abstract: The aim of the work presented here was to either use
existing forest dynamic simulation models or calibrate a new one
both within the SYMFOR framework with the purpose of examining
changes in stand level basal area and functional composition in
response to selective logging considering trees > 10 cm d.b.h for two
areas of undisturbed Amazonian non flooded tropical forest in Brazil
and one in Peru. Model biological realism was evaluated for forest in
the undisturbed and selectively logged state and it was concluded that
forest dynamics were realistically represented. Results of the logging
simulation experiments showed that in relation to undisturbed forest
simulation subject to no form of harvesting intervention there was a
significant amount of change over a 90 year simulation period that
was positively proportional to the intensity of logging. Areas which
had in the dynamic equilibrium of undisturbed forest a greater
proportion of a specific ecological guild of trees known as the light
hardwoods (LHW’s) seemed to respond more favorably in terms of
less deviation but only within a specific range of baseline forest
composition beyond which compositional diversity became more
important. These finds are in line partially with practical management
experience and partiality basic systematics theory respectively.
Abstract: This paper describes topology of business models in market ecosystem of the emerging electric mobility industry. The business model topology shows that firm-s participation in the ecosystem is associated with different requirements on resources and capabilities, and different levels of risk. Business model concept is used together with concepts of networked value creation and shows that firms can achieve higher levels of sustainable advantage by cooperation, not competition. Hybrid business models provide companies a viable alternative possibility for participation in the market ecosystem.
Abstract: Full - Scale Accelerated Loading System, one part of
“the Eleventh - Five - Year National Grand Technology Infrastructure
Program" is a facility to evaluate the performance and service life of
different kinds of pavements subjected to traffic loading under full -
controlled environment. While simulating the environments of frigid
zone and permafrost zone, the accurate control of air temperature, road
temperature and roadbed temperature are the key points and also
aporias for the designment. In this paper, numerical simulations are
used to determine the design parameters of the frozen soil simulation
system. At first, a brief introduction of the Full - Scale Accelerate
Loading System was given. Then, the temperature control method of
frozen soil simulation system was proposed. Finally, by using finite
element simulations, the optimal design of frozen soil simulation
system was obtained. This proposed design, which was obtained by
finite element simulations, provided significant referents to the
ultimate design of the environment simulation system.
Abstract: The Build-Then-Sell (BTS) is a novel system
implemented in Malaysia after a number of complaints have been
received from buyers in the preceding Sell-Then-Build (STB) system.
When the government announced the implementation of the BTS in
2007, proponents of BTS have asserted that the new system will
provide houses with low level of defects. Their argument however is
not supported by any empirical data. Hence, this study is conducted
to evaluate the housing defects in BTS houses. Six BTS residential
areas have been surveyed to collect the defects data. Questionnaires
were administered directly to the occupiers in each of the BTS houses
through door-to-door visits. The result has shown that the rate of
defects for the six residential areas is ranged from minor to slight,
which only affect the aesthetic value of the house.
Abstract: An effective approach for realizing the binary tree structure, representing a combinational logic functionality with enhanced throughput, is discussed in this paper. The optimization in maximum operating frequency was achieved through delay minimization, which in turn was possible by means of reducing the depth of the binary network. The proposed synthesis methodology has been validated by experimentation with FPGA as the target technology. Though our proposal is technology independent, yet the heuristic enables better optimization in throughput even after technology mapping for such Boolean functionality; whose reduced CNF form is associated with a lesser literal cost than its reduced DNF form at the Boolean equation level. For cases otherwise, our method converges to similar results as that of [12]. The practical results obtained for a variety of case studies demonstrate an improvement in the maximum throughput rate for Spartan IIE (XC2S50E-7FT256) and Spartan 3 (XC3S50-4PQ144) FPGA logic families by 10.49% and 13.68% respectively. With respect to the LUTs and IOBUFs required for physical implementation of the requisite non-regenerative logic functionality, the proposed method enabled savings to the tune of 44.35% and 44.67% respectively, over the existing efficient method available in literature [12].
Abstract: The impact of a proposed pier on tidal current
alteration was evaluated. The proposed pier location was in Salad
Bay on Koa Kood Island, Trat province, Thailand, and was designed
to accommodate passenger ships with a draft of less than 2 m. The
study began with collecting necessary data, including bathymetric,
water elevation and tidal current characteristics. The impact was
assessed using a software package (MIKE21). Although the results
showed that the pier would affect the existing current pattern, the
change was determined to be insignificant, as the design of the piles
for the pier provided sufficient spacing to let the current flow as
freely as possible. Consequences of the altered current, such as
seabed erosion, water stagnation, sediment deposition and
navigational risk were assessed. Environmental mitigation measures
might be necessary if the impacts were considered unacceptable.
Abstract: The main objective of this study was to determine if a
minimal increase in road light level (luminance) could lead to
improved driving performance among older adults. Older, middleaged
and younger adults were tested in a driving simulator following
vision and cognitive screening. Comparisons were made for the
performance of simulated night driving under two road light
conditions (0.6 and 2.5 cd/m2). At each light level, the effects of self
reported night driving avoidance were examined along with the
vision/cognitive performance. It was found that increasing road light
level from 0.6 cd/m2 to 2.5 cd/m2 resulted in improved recognition of
signage on straight highway segments. The improvement depends on
different driver-related factors such as vision and cognitive abilities,
and confidence. On curved road sections, the results showed that
driver-s performance worsened. It is concluded that while increasing
road lighting may be helpful to older adults especially for sign
recognition, it may also result in increased driving confidence and
thus reduced attention in some driving situations.

Abstract: Multi criteria decision analysis (MDCA) covers both
data and experience. It is very common to solve the problems with
many parameters and uncertainties. GIS supported solutions improve
and speed up the decision process. Weighted grading as a MDCA
method is employed for solving the geotechnical problems. In this
study, geotechnical parameters namely soil type; SPT (N) blow
number, shear wave velocity (Vs) and depth of underground water
level (DUWL) have been engaged in MDCA and GIS. In terms of
geotechnical aspects, the settlement suitability of the municipal area
was analyzed by the method. MDCA results were compatible with
the geotechnical observations and experience. The method can be
employed in geotechnical oriented microzoning studies if the criteria
are well evaluated.
