Abstract: This paper presents the results of a study on the
influence of varying percentages of rock bridges along a basal surface
defining a biplanar failure mode. A pseudo-coupled-hydromechanical
brittle fracture analysis is adopted using the state-of-the-art code
Slope Model. Model results show that rock bridge failure is strongly
influenced by the incorporation of groundwater pressures. The
models show that groundwater pressure can promote total failure of a
5% rock bridge along the basal surface. Once the percentage of the
rock bridges increases to 10 and 15%, although, the rock bridges are
broken, full interconnection of the surface defining the basal surface
of the biplanar mode does not occur. Increased damage is caused
when the rock bridge is located at the daylighting end of the basal
surface in proximity to the blast damage zone. As expected, some
cracking damage is experienced in the blast damage zone, where
properties representing a good quality controlled damage blast
technique were assumed. Model results indicate the potential increase
of permeability towards the blast damage zone.
Abstract: The end panels of a large rectangular industrial duct,
which experience significant internal pressures, also experience
considerable transverse shear due to transfer of gravity loads to the
supports. The current design practice of such thin plate panels for
shear load is based on methods used for the design of plate girder
webs. The structural arrangements, the loadings and the resulting
behavior associated with the industrial duct end panels are, however,
significantly different from those of the web of a plate girder. The
large aspect ratio of the end panels gives rise to multiple bands of
tension fields, whereas the plate girder web design is based on one
tension field. In addition to shear, the industrial end panels are
subjected to internal pressure which in turn produces significant
membrane action. This paper reports a study which was undertaken
to review the current industrial analysis and design methods and to
propose a comprehensive method of designing industrial duct end
panels for shear resistance. In this investigation, a nonlinear finite element model was
developed to simulate the behavior of industrial duct end panel, along
with the associated edge stiffeners, subjected to transverse shear and
internal pressures. The model considered the geometric imperfections
and constitutive relations for steels. Six scale independent
dimensionless parameters that govern the behavior of such end panel
were identified and were then used in a parametric study. It was
concluded that the plate slenderness dominates the shear strength of
stockier end panels, and whereas, both the plate slenderness and the
aspect ratio influence the shear strength of slender end panels. Based
on these studies, this paper proposes design aids for estimating the
shear strength of rectangular duct end panels.
Abstract: Coal fly ash, an industrial by product of coal
combustion thermal power plants is considered as a hazardous
material and its improper disposal has become an environmental
issue. On the other hand, manufacturing conventional clay bricks
involves on consumption of large amount of clay and leads
substantial depletion of topsoil. This paper unveils the possibility of
using fly ash as a partial replacement of clay for brick manufacturing
considering the local technology practiced in Bangladesh. The effect
of fly ash with different replacing ratio (0%, 20%, 30%, 40%, and
50% by volume) of clay on properties of bricks was studied. Bricks
were made in the field parallel to ordinary bricks marked with
specific number for different percentage to identify them at time of
testing. No physical distortion is observed in fly ash brick after
burning in the kiln. Results from laboratory test show that
compressive strength of brick is decreased with the increase of fly
ash and maximum compressive strength is found to be 19.6 MPa at
20% of fly ash. In addition, water absorption of fly ash brick is
increased with the increase of fly ash. The abrasion value and
Specific gravity of coarse aggregate prepared from brick with fly ash
also studied and the results of this study suggests that 20% fly ash
can be considered as the optimum fly ash content for producing good
quality bricks utilizing present practiced technology.
Abstract: The ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) is the goal
of regional economic integration by 2015. In the region, tourism is an
activity that is important, especially as a source of foreign currency, a
source of employment creation and a source of income bringing to the
region. Given the complexity of the issues entailing the concept of
sustainable tourism, this paper tries to assess tourism sustainability
with the ASEAN, based on a number of quantitative indicators for all
the ten economies, Thailand, Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia,
Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Cambodia, and Brunei. The
methodological framework will provide a number of benchmarks of
tourism activities in these countries. They include identification of the
dimensions; for example, economic, socio-ecologic, infrastructure
and indicators, method of scaling, chart representation and evaluation
on Asian countries. This specification shows that a similar level of
tourism activity might introduce different implementation in the
tourism activity and might have different consequences for the socioecological
environment and sustainability. The heterogeneity of
developing countries exposed briefly here would be useful to detect
and prepare for coping with the main problems of each country in
their tourism activities, as well as competitiveness and value creation
of tourism for ASEAN economic community, and will compare with
other parts of the world.
Abstract: A seizure prediction method is proposed by extracting
global features using phase correlation between adjacent epochs for
detecting relative changes and local features using fluctuation/
deviation within an epoch for determining fine changes of different
EEG signals. A classifier and a regularization technique are applied
for the reduction of false alarms and improvement of the overall
prediction accuracy. The experiments show that the proposed method
outperforms the state-of-the-art methods and provides high prediction
accuracy (i.e., 97.70%) with low false alarm using EEG signals in
different brain locations from a benchmark data set.
Abstract: Durian skin is a newly explores natural fibre
potentially reinforced polyolefin for diverse applications. In this
work, investigation on the effect of coupling agent, maleic anhydride
polypropylene (MAPP) on the mechanical, morphological, and
thermal properties of polypropylene (PP) reinforced with durian skin
fibre (DSF) was conducted. The presence of 30 wt% DSF
significantly reduced the tensile strength of PP-DSF composite.
Interestingly, even though the same trend goes to PP-DSF with the
presence of MAPP, the reduction is only about 4% relative to
unreinforced PP and 18% higher than PP-DSF without MAPP
(untreated composite or UTC). The used of MAPP in treated
composite (TC) also increased the tensile modulus, flexural
properties and degradation temperature. The enhanced mechanical
properties are consistent with good interfacial interaction as
evidenced under scanning electron microscopy.
Abstract: Concurrent planning of project scheduling and
material ordering has been increasingly addressed within last decades
as an approach to improve the project execution costs. Therefore, we
have taken the problem into consideration in this paper, aiming to
maximize schedules quality robustness, in addition to minimize the
relevant costs. In this regard, a bi-objective mathematical model is
developed to formulate the problem. Moreover, it is possible to
utilize the all-unit discount for materials purchasing. The problem is
then solved by the E-constraint method, and the Pareto front is
obtained for a variety of robustness values. The applicability and
efficiency of the proposed model is tested by different numerical
instances, finally.
Abstract: The modelling of physical phenomena, such as the
earth’s free oscillations, the vibration of strings, the interaction of
atomic particles, or the steady state flow in a bar give rise to Sturm-
Liouville (SL) eigenvalue problems. The boundary applications of
some systems like the convection-diffusion equation, electromagnetic
and heat transfer problems requires the combination of Dirichlet and
Neumann boundary conditions. Hence, the incorporation of Robin
boundary condition in the analyses of Sturm-Liouville problem. This
paper deals with the computation of the eigenvalues and
eigenfunction of generalized Sturm-Liouville problems with Robin
boundary condition using the finite element method. Numerical
solution of classical Sturm–Liouville problem is presented. The
results show an agreement with the exact solution. High results
precision is achieved with higher number of elements.
Abstract: The underutilization of biomass resources in the
Philippines, combined with its growing population and the rise in
fossil fuel prices confirms demand for alternative energy sources. The
goal of this paper is to provide a comparison of MODIS-based and
Landsat-based agricultural land cover maps when used in the
estimation of rice hull’s available energy potential. Biomass resource
assessment was done using mathematical models and remote sensing
techniques employed in a GIS platform.
Abstract: This research aimed to investigate the relationship
between attitude towards marketing mix, brand image and consumer
behavior of the passengers of low-cost airlines service. This study
employed by quantitative research and the questionnaire was used to
collect the data from 400 sampled of the passengers who have ever
used the low-cost airline services based in Bangkok, Thailand. The
descriptive statistics and Pearson’s correlation analysis were used to
analyze data. The research results revealed that the attitude of the marketing mix
of the low-cost airline services including product, price, place,
promotion and process had related to the consumer behavior on the
aspects of duration of service and frequency of service. While, the
brand image of the low cost airline including the characteristics of
organization, service quality and company identity had related to the
consumer behavior on duration of service, frequency of service and
cost of service at the significant statistically acceptable levels.
Abstract: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of
supplementing broiler starter diet with different levels of an essential
oil blend (EOB) containing capsaicin, carvacrol and cinnamaldehyde
on the performance of broilers. A total of 300 day-old straight-run
Cobb broiler chicks were randomly assigned to three treatments after
7-day group brooding following a completely randomized design
(CRD). Birds assigned in treatment 1 were given starter basal diet
while those in treatments 2 and 3 were given starter basal diet with
400 mg/kg antibiotic growth promoter (AGP) and 150 mg/kg EOB,
respectively, until the 28th day. Basal finisher feed were given for all
the treatments until harvest. Following 37 d feeding, body weight
gain, feed consumption, feed efficiency, dressing percentage,
livability and jejunal villi height were determined. Results showed no
significant differences (P>0.05) in growth performance. However,
villi height and crypt depth was significantly lower for birds fed
EOB.
Abstract: The purpose of this study is to propose an effective method to improve frictional coefficient between shoe rubber soles with added glass fibers and the surfaces of icy and snowy road in order to prevent slip-and-fall accidents by the users. The additional fibers into the rubber were uniformly tilted to the perpendicular direction of the frictional surface, where tilting angles were -60, -30, +30, +60, 90 degrees and 0 (as normal specimen), respectively. It was found that parallel arraignment was effective to improve the frictional coefficient when glass fibers were embedded in the shoe rubber, while perpendicular to normal direction of the embedded glass fibers on the shoe surface was also effective to do that once after they were exposed from the shoe rubber with its abrasion. These improvements were explained by the increase of stiffness against the shear deformation of the rubber at critical frictional state and adequate scratching of fibers when fibers were protruded in perpendicular to frictional direction, respectively. Most effective angle of tilting of frictional coefficient between rubber specimens and a stone was perpendicular (= 0 degree) to frictional direction. Combinative modified rubber specimen having 2 layers was fabricated where tilting angle of protruded fibers was 0 degree near the contact surface and tilting angle of embedded fibers was 90 degrees near back surface in thickness direction to further improve the frictional coefficient. Current study suggested that effective arraignments in tilting angle of the added fibers should be applied in designing rubber shoe soles to keep the safeties for users in regions of cold climates.
Abstract: In this paper, we have reported birefringence
manipulation in regenerated high birefringent fiber Bragg grating
(RPMG) by using CO2 laser annealing method. The results indicate
that the birefringence of RPMG remains unchanged after CO2 laser
annealing followed by slow cooling process, but reduced after fast
cooling process (~5.6×10-5). After a series of annealing procedures
with different cooling rates, the obtained results show that slower the
cooling rate, higher the birefringence of RPMG. The volume, thermal
expansion coefficient (TEC) and glass transition temperature (Tg)
change of stress applying part in RPMG during cooling process are
responsible for the birefringence change. Therefore, these findings
are important to the RPMG sensor in high and dynamic temperature
environment. The measuring accuracy, range and sensitivity of
RPMG sensor is greatly affected by its birefringence value. This
work also opens up a new application of CO2 laser for fiber annealing
and birefringence modification.
Abstract: The understanding of geotechnical characteristics of
near-surface material and the effects of the groundwater is very
important problem in such as site studies. For showing the relations
between seismic data and groundwater, we selected about 25 km2 as
the study area. It has been presented which is a detailed work of
seismic data and groundwater depths of Gokpinar Damp area.
Seismic waves velocity (Vp and Vs) are very important parameters
showing the soil properties. The seismic records were used the
method of the multichannel analysis of surface waves near area of
Gokpinar Damp area. Sixty sites in this area have been investigated
with survey lines about 60 m in length. MASW (Multichannel
analysis of surface wave) method has been used to generate onedimensional
shear wave velocity profile at locations. These shear
wave velocities are used to estimate equivalent shear wave velocity in
the study area at every 2 and 5 m intervals up to a depth of 45 m.
Levels of equivalent shear wave velocity of soil are used the
classified of the study area. After the results of the study, it must be
considered as components of urban planning and building design of
Gokpinar Damp area, Denizli and the application and use of these
results should be required and enforced by municipal authorities.
Abstract: Strong anthropogenic impact has uncontrolled
consequences on the nature of the soil. Hence, up-to-date sustainable
methods of soil state improvement are essential. Investigators provide
the evidence that biochar can positively effects physical, chemical,
and biological soil properties and the abundance of mycorrhizal fungi
which are in the focus of this study. The main aim of the present
investigation is to demonstrate the effect of two types of plant growth
promoting bacteria (PGPB) inoculums along with the beech wood
biochar and mineral N additives on mycorrhizal colonization.
Experiment has been set up in laboratory conditions with containers
filled with arable soil from the protection zone of the main water
source “Brezova nad Svitavou”. Lactuca sativa (lettuce) has been
selected as a model plant. Based on the obtained data, it can be
concluded that mycorrhizal colonization increased as the result of
combined influence of biochar and PGPB inoculums amendment. In
addition, correlation analyses showed that the numbers of main
groups of cultivated bacteria were dependent on the degree of
mycorrhizal colonization.
Abstract: Unsteady flow and heat transfer from a circular
cylinder in cross-flow is studied numerically. The governing
equations are solved by using finite volume method. Reynolds
number varies in range of 50 to 200; in this range flow is considered
to be laminar and unsteady. Al2O3 nanoparticle with volume fraction
in range of 5% to 20% is added to pure water. Effects of adding
nanoparticle to pure water on lift and drag coefficient and Nusselt
number is presented. Addition of Al2O3 has inconsiderable effect on
the value of drags and lift coefficient. However, it has significant
effect on heat transfer; results show that heat transfer of Al2O3
nanofluid is about 9% to 36% higher than pure water.
Abstract: Monitoring the conditions of rotating machinery, such
as bearings, is important in order to improve the stability of work.
Acoustic Emission (AE) and vibration analysis are some of the most
accomplished techniques used for this purpose. Acoustic emission
has the ability to detect the initial phase of component degradation.
Moreover, it has been observed that vibration analysis is not as
successful at low rotational speeds (below 100 rpm). This because the
energy generated within this speed region is not detectable using
conventional vibration. From this perspective, this paper has
presented a brief review of using acoustic emission techniques for
monitoring bearing conditions.
Abstract: This study aims to investigate the relationships
between human resource management and entrepreneurship in the
view of owner-managers and employees, and among employees with
in the SME in Thailand. The research method used qualitative
method to confirm the phenomenology interest with top management
position which women are regarding their career path by using
purposive sampling method. The results showed that human
resources management has positive relate with the corporate
entrepreneurship are including the recruitment process, training
worker, professional career development and reward system impact
to entrepreneur’s knowledge and innovation of corporate
entrepreneurship in respectively to bring a very reliable way. Then,
the key informant suggested that women’s career experiences
predisposed them to find an alternative route for entrepreneurship,
despite having achieved top management. The understanding factors
that successfully contribute to the development of women
entrepreneurs from career development perspective are critical
endeavour for any type of organization as well.
Abstract: With the increasing dependence of countries on the
critical infrastructure, it increases their vulnerability. Big threat is
primarily in the human factor (personnel of the critical infrastructure)
and in terrorist attacks. It emphasizes the development of
methodology for searching of weak points and their subsequent
elimination. This article discusses methods for the analysis of safety
in the objects of critical infrastructure. It also contains proposal for
methodology for training employees of security services in the
objects of the critical infrastructure and developing scenarios of
attacks on selected objects of the critical infrastructure.
Abstract: Internship is a supervised and structured learning
experience related to one’s field of study or career goal. Internship
allows students to obtain work experience and the opportunity to
apply skills learned during university. Internship is a valuable
learning experience for students; however, literature on employer
assessment is scarce on Malaysian student’s internship experience.
This study focuses on employer’s perspective on student’s
performances during their three months of internship. The results are
based on the descriptive analysis of 45 sets of question gathered from
the on-site supervisors of the interns. The survey of 45 on-site
supervisor’s feedback was collected through postal mail. It was found
that, interns have not met their on-site supervisor’s expectations in
many areas. The significance of this study is employer’s assessment
on the internship shall be used as feedback to improve on ways how
to prepare students for their internship and employments in future.
