Abstract: Among other factors that characterize satellite communication
channels is their high bit error rate. We present a system for
still image transmission over noisy satellite channels. The system
couples image compression together with error control codes to
improve the received image quality while maintaining its bandwidth
requirements. The proposed system is tested using a high resolution
satellite imagery simulated over the Rician fading channel. Evaluation
results show improvement in overall system including image quality
and bandwidth requirements compared to similar systems with different
coding schemes.
Abstract: During more than a decade, many proposals and standards have been designed to deal with the mobility issues; however, there are still some serious limitations in basing solutions on them. In this paper we discuss the possibility of handling mobility at the application layer. We do this while revisiting the conventional implementation of the Two Phase Commit (2PC) protocol which is a fundamental asset of transactional technology for ensuring the consistent commitment of distributed transactions. The solution is based on an execution framework providing an efficient extension that is aware of the mobility and preserves the 2PC principle.
Abstract: This paper presents an analytical solution to get a reliable estimation of the hydrodynamic pressure on gravity dams induced by vertical component earthquake when solving the fluid and dam interaction problem. Presented analytical technique is presented for calculation of earthquake-induced hydrodynamic pressure in the reservoir of gravity dams allowing for water compressibility and wave absorption at the reservoir bottom. This new analytical solution can take into account the effect of bottom material on seismic response of gravity dams. It is concluded that because the vertical component of ground motion causes significant hydrodynamic forces in the horizontal direction on a vertical upstream face, responses to the vertical component of ground motion are of special importance in analysis of concrete gravity dams subjected to earthquakes.
Abstract: Machine Translation (MT 3) of English text to its Urdu equivalent is a difficult challenge. Lot of attempts has been made, but a few limited solutions are provided till now. We present a direct approach, using an expert system to translate English text into its equivalent Urdu, using The Unicode Standard, Version 4.0 (ISBN 0-321-18578-1) Range: 0600–06FF. The expert system works with a knowledge base that contains grammatical patterns of English and Urdu, as well as a tense and gender-aware dictionary of Urdu words (with their English equivalents).
Abstract: This study presents an exact general solution for
steady-state conductive heat transfer in cylindrical composite
laminates. Appropriate Fourier transformation has been obtained
using Sturm-Liouville theorem. Series coefficients are achieved by
solving a set of equations that related to thermal boundary conditions
at inner and outer of the cylinder, also related to temperature
continuity and heat flux continuity between each layer. The solution
of this set of equations are obtained using Thomas algorithm. In this
paper, the effect of fibers- angle on temperature distribution of
composite laminate is investigated under general boundary
conditions. Here, we show that the temperature distribution for any
composite laminates is between temperature distribution for
laminates with θ = 0° and θ = 90° .
Abstract: In this paper a multi-objective nonlinear programming
model of cellular manufacturing system is presented which minimize
the intercell movements and maximize the sum of reliability of cells.
We present a genetic approach for finding efficient solutions to the
problem of cell formation for products having multiple routings.
These methods find the non-dominated solutions and according to
decision makers prefer, the best solution will be chosen.
Abstract: Schema matching plays a key role in many different
applications, such as schema integration, data integration, data
warehousing, data transformation, E-commerce, peer-to-peer data
management, ontology matching and integration, semantic Web,
semantic query processing, etc. Manual matching is expensive and
error-prone, so it is therefore important to develop techniques to
automate the schema matching process. In this paper, we present a
solution for XML schema automated matching problem which
produces semantic mappings between corresponding schema
elements of given source and target schemas. This solution
contributed in solving more comprehensively and efficiently XML
schema automated matching problem. Our solution based on
combining linguistic similarity, data type compatibility and structural
similarity of XML schema elements. After describing our solution,
we present experimental results that demonstrate the effectiveness of
this approach.
Abstract: The effects of equilibrium time, solution pH, and
sorption temperature of cationic methylene blue (MB) adsorption on nanoporous metallosilicoaluminophosphate ZnAPSO-34 was studied
using a batch equilibration method. UV–VIS spectroscopy was used
to obtain the adsorption isotherms at 20° C. The optimum period for
adsorption was 300 min. However, MB removal increased from
81,82 % to 94,81 %. The equilibrium adsorption data was analyzed
by using Langmuir, Freundlich and Temkin isotherm models.
Langmuir isotherm was found to be the better-fitting model and the process followed pseudo second–order kinetics. The results showed
that ZnAPSO-34 could be employed as an effective material and could be an attractive alternative for the removal of dyes and colors
from aqueous solutions.
Abstract: There are many automotive accidents due to blind spots and driver inattentiveness. Blind spot is the area that is invisible to the driver's viewpoint without head rotation. Several methods are available for assisting the drivers. Simplest methods are — rear mirrors and wide-angle lenses. But, these methods have a disadvantage of the requirement for human assistance. So, the accuracy of these devices depends on driver. Another approach called an automated approach that makes use of sensors such as sonar or radar. These sensors are used to gather range information. The range information will be processed and used for detecting the collision. Abstract: The mechanical properties of granular solids are
dependent on the flow of stresses from one particle to another
through inter-particle contact. Although some experimental methods
have been used to study the inter-particle contacts in the past,
preliminary work with these techniques indicated that they do not
have the necessary resolution to distinguish between those contacts
that transmit the load and those that do not, especially for systems
with a wide distribution of particle sizes. In this research, computer
simulations are used to study the nature and distribution of contacts
in a compact with wide particle size distribution, representative of
aggregate size distribution used in asphalt pavement construction.
The packing fraction, the mean number of contacts and the
distribution of contacts were studied for different scenarios. A
methodology to distinguish and compute the fraction of load-bearing
particles and the fraction of space-filling particles (particles that do
not transmit any force) is needed for further investigation.
Abstract: In the multi objective optimization, in the case when generated set of Pareto optimal solutions is large, occurs the problem to select of the best solution from this set. In this paper, is suggested a method to order of Pareto set. Ordering the Pareto optimal set carried out in conformity with the introduced distance function between each solution and selected reference point, where the reference point may be adjusted to represent the preferences of a decision making agent. Preference information about objective weights from a decision maker may be expressed imprecisely. The developed elicitation procedure provides an opportunity to obtain surrogate numerical weights for the objectives, and thus, to manage impreciseness of preference. The proposed method is a scalable to many objectives and can be used independently or as complementary to the various visualization techniques in the multidimensional case.
Abstract: TiO2/MgO composite films were prepared by coating
the magnesium acetate solution in the pores of mesoporous TiO2
films using a dip coating method. Concentrations of magnesium
acetate solution were varied in a range of 1x10-4 – 1x10-1 M. The
TiO2/MgO composite films were characterized by scanning electron
microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscropy (TEM),
electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(EIS) , transient voltage
decay and I-V test. The TiO2 films and TiO2/MgO composite films
were immersed in a 0.3 mM N719 dye solution. The Dye-sensitized
solar cells with the TiO2/MgO/N719 structure showed an optimal
concentration of magnesium acetate solution of 1x10-3 M resulting in
the MgO film estimated thickness of 0.0963 nm and giving the
maximum efficiency of 4.85%. The improved efficiency of dyesensitized
solar cell was due to the magnesium oxide film as the wide
band gap coating decays the electron back transfer to the triiodide
electrolyte and reduce charge recombination.
Abstract: The Bayesian Optimization Algorithm (BOA) is an algorithm based on the estimation of distributions. It uses techniques from modeling data by Bayesian networks to estimating the joint distribution of promising solutions. To obtain the structure of Bayesian network, different search algorithms can be used. The key point that BOA addresses is whether the constructed Bayesian network could generate new and useful solutions (strings), which could lead the algorithm in the right direction to solve the problem. Undoubtedly, this ability is a crucial factor of the efficiency of BOA. Varied search algorithms can be used in BOA, but their performances are different. For choosing better ones, certain suitable method to present their ability difference is needed. In this paper, a greedy search algorithm and a stochastic search algorithm are used in BOA to solve certain optimization problem. A method using Kullback-Leibler (KL) Divergence to reflect their difference is described.
Abstract: An effect of rolling temperature on the mechanical properties and microstructural evolution of an Al-Mg-Si alloy was studied. The material was rolled up to a true strain of ~0.7 at three different temperatures viz; room temperature, liquid propanol and liquid nitrogen. The liquid nitrogen rolled sample exhibited superior properties with a yield and tensile strength of 332 MPa and 364 MPa, respectively, with a reasonably good ductility of ~9%. The liquid nitrogen rolled sample showed around 54 MPa increase in tensile strength without much reduction in the ductility as compared to the as received T6 condition alloy. The microstructural details revealed equiaxed grains in the annealed and solutionized sample and elongated grains in the rolled samples. In addition, the cryorolled samples exhibited fine grain structure compared to the room temperature rolled samples.
Abstract: ZnS nanoparticles of different size have been
synthesized using a colloidal particles method. Zns nanoparticles
prepared with capping agent (mercaptoethanol) then were
characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD) and UV-Vis
spectroscopy. The particle size of the nanoparticles calculated from
the XRD patterns has been found in the range 1.85-2.44nm.
Absorption spectra have been obtained using UV-Vis
spectrophotometer to find the optical band gap and the obtained
values have been founded to being range 3.83-4.59eV. It was also
found that energy band gap increase with the increase in molar
capping agent solution.
Abstract: Ringing effect is one of the most annoying visual
artifacts in digital video. It is a significant factor of subjective quality
deterioration. However, there is a widely-accepted misunderstanding
of its cause. In this paper, we propose a reasonable interpretation of the
cause of ringing effect. Based on the interpretation, we suggest further
two methods to reduce ringing effect in DCT-based video coding. The
methods adaptively adjust quantizers according to video features. Our
experiments proved that the methods could efficiently improve
subjective quality with acceptable additional computing costs.
Abstract: The present paper reports results of an experimental
program conducted to study performance of fly ash based
geopolymer pastes at elevated temperature. Three series of
geopolymer pastes differing in Na2O content (8.5%, 10% and 11.5%)
were manufactured by activating low calcium fly ash with a mixture
of sodium hydroxide and sodium silicate solution. The paste
specimens were subjected to temperatures as high as 900oC and the
behaviour at elevated temperatures were investigated on the basis of
physical appearance, weight losses, residual strength, shrinkage
measurements and sorptivity tests at different temperatures. Scanning
electron microscopy along with EDX and XRD tests were also
conducted to examine microstructure and mineralogical changes
during the thermal exposure. Specimens which were initially grey
turned reddish accompanied by appearance of small cracks as the
temperature increased to 900oC. Loss of weight was more in
specimens manufactured with highest Na2O content. Geopolymer
paste specimen containing minimum Na2O performed better than
those with higher Na2O content in terms of residual compressive
strength.
Abstract: Although achieving zero-defect software release is
practically impossible, software industries should take maximum
care to detect defects/bugs well ahead in time allowing only bare
minimums to creep into released version. This is a clear indicator of
time playing an important role in the bug detection. In addition to
this, software quality is the major factor in software engineering
process. Moreover, early detection can be achieved only through
static code analysis as opposed to conventional testing.
BugCatcher.Net is a static analysis tool, which detects bugs in .NET®
languages through MSIL (Microsoft Intermediate Language)
inspection. The tool utilizes a Parser based on Finite State Automata
to carry out bug detection. After being detected, bugs need to be
corrected immediately. BugCatcher.Net facilitates correction, by
proposing a corrective solution for reported warnings/bugs to end
users with minimum side effects. Moreover, the tool is also capable
of analyzing the bug trend of a program under inspection.
Abstract: The present work presents the extraction of copper(II)
from sulphuric acid solutions with Sodium diethyldithiocarbamate
(SDDT), and six different organic diluents: Dichloromethane,
Chloroform, Carbon tetrachloride, Toluene, xylene and Cyclohexane,
were tested. The pair SDDT/Chloroform showed to be the most
selective in removing the copper cations, and hence was considered
throughout the experimental study.
The effects of operating parameters such as the initial concentration
of the extracting agent, the agitation time, the agitation speed and the
acid concentration were considered.
For an initial concentration of Cu (II) of 63 ppm in a 0.5 M sulphuric
acid solution, both with a mass of the extracting agent of 20 mg, an
extraction percentage of about 97.8 % and a distribution coefficient
of 44.42 were obtained, respectively, confirming the performance
of the SDDT-Chloroform pair.
Abstract: CFlow is a flow chart software, it contains facilities to
draw and evaluate a flow chart. A flow chart evaluation applies a
simulation method to enable presentation of work flow in a flow
chart solution. Flow chart simulation of CFlow is executed by
manipulating the CFlow data file which is saved in a graphical vector
format. These text-based data are organised by using a data
classification technic based on a Library classification-scheme. This
paper describes the file format for flow chart simulation software of
CFlow.
