Abstract: We demonstrate a 1×4 coarse wavelength
division-multiplexing (CWDM) planar concave grating
multiplexer/demultiplexer and its application in re-configurable
optical add/drop multiplexer (ROADM) system in silicon-on-insulator
substrate. The wavelengths of the demonstrated concave grating
multiplexer align well with the ITU-T standard. We demonstrate a
prototype of ROADM comprising two such concave gratings and four
wide-band thermo-optical MZI switches. Undercut technology which
removes the underneath silicon substrate is adopted in optical switches
in order to minimize the operation power. For all the thermal heaters,
the operation voltage is smaller than 1.5 V, and the switch power is
~2.4 mW. High throughput pseudorandom binary sequence (PRBS)
data transmission with up to 100 Gb/s is demonstrated, showing the
high-performance ROADM functionality.
Abstract: Gated community has gained its dominant in residential areas development that it has become the standard development pattern of the newly built residential areas in contemporary China. The form of gated community has its own advantages and rationality that meet the needs of quite a lot of residents, but it-s also believed by researchers that the form has great damage to the urban morphology and development, and has a negative impact on residents- living style. However, there is still a considerable controversy of the origins and outcomes. Though recognized as a global phenomenon, gated community developed in China is greatly to do with the specific local forces, respect to the unique historical, political and socio-cultural momentums. A historical review of the traditional settlements in China and the trends that how Gated community has gained its contemporary form, is indispensable for comprehending the local forces, and provide a new perspective to solve the controversy.
Abstract: This article presents a voltage-mode universal
biquadratic filter performing simultaneous 3 standard functions: lowpass,
high-pass and band-pass functions, employing differential
different current conveyor (DDCC) and current controlled current
conveyor (CCCII) as active element. The features of the circuit are
that: the quality factor and pole frequency can be tuned independently
via the input bias currents: the circuit description is very simple,
consisting of 1 DDCC, 2 CCCIIs, 2 electronic resistors and 2
grounded capacitors. Without requiring component matching
conditions, the proposed circuit is very appropriate to further develop
into an integrated circuit. The PSPICE simulation results are
depicted. The given results agree well with the theoretical
anticipation.
Abstract: Chakri Maha Prasart Throne Hall is the important
Audience hall in Grand Palace, Bangkok, Thailand which was
established in the early reign of King Chulalongkorn (King Rama V)
in 1882. The Throne was designed with the distinguished architecture
by significant blending of Western and Thai Traditional styles under
the Thai Social changing in Colony Era and Thai traditional culture.
The western style was represented of modernization and civilization as
the other European countries. In the other hand, Thai traditional
architecture style with national emblem or Royal emblem was shown
the status and power of Thai King as the Thai believes and culture.
Abstract: In this paper, we present an analytical framework for the evaluation of the uplink performance of multihop cellular networks based on dynamic time division duplex (TDD). New wireless broadband protocols, such as WiMAX, WiBro, and 3G-LTE apply TDD, and mobile communication protocols under standardization (e.g., IEEE802.16j) are investigating mobile multihop relay (MMR) as a future technology. In this paper a novel MMR TDD scheme is presented, where the dynamic range of the frame is shared to traffic resources of asymmetric nature and multihop relaying. The mobile communication channel interference model comprises of inner and co-channel interference (CCI). The performance analysis focuses on the uplink due to the fact that the effects of dynamic resource allocation show significant performance degradation only in the uplink compared to time division multiple access (TDMA) schemes due to CCI [1-3], where the downlink results to be the same or better.The analysis was based on the signal to interference power ratio (SIR) outage probability of dynamic TDD (D-TDD) and TDMA systems,which are the most widespread mobile communication multi-user control techniques. This paper presents the uplink SIR outage probability with multihop results and shows that the dynamic TDD scheme applying MMR can provide a performance improvement compared to single hop applications if executed properly.
Abstract: The assessment of surface waters in Enugu metropolis
for fecal coliform bacteria was undertaken. Enugu urban was divided
into three areas (A1, A2 and A3), and fecal coliform bacteria
analysed in the surface waters found in these areas for four years
(2005-2008). The plate count method was used for the analyses. Data
generated were subjected to statistical tests involving; Normality test,
Homogeneity of variance test, correlation test, and tolerance limit
test. The influence of seasonality and pollution trends were
investigated using time series plots. Results from the tolerance limit
test at 95% coverage with 95% confidence, and with respect to EU
maximum permissible concentration show that the three areas suffer
from fecal coliform pollution. To this end, remediation procedure
involving the use of saw-dust extracts from three woods namely;
Chlorophora-Excelsa (C-Excelsa),Khayan-Senegalensis,(CSenegalensis)
and Erythrophylum-Ivorensis (E-Ivorensis) in
controlling the coliforms was studied. Results show that mixture of
the acetone extracts of the woods show the most effective
antibacterial inhibitory activities (26.00mm zone of inhibition)
against E-coli. Methanol extract mixture of the three woods gave best
inhibitory activity (26.00mm zone of inhibition) against S-areus, and
25.00mm zones of inhibition against E-Aerogenes. The aqueous
extracts mixture gave acceptable zones of inhibitions against the
three bacteria organisms.
Abstract: The scenario of bypass transition is generally described
as follows: the low-frequency disturbances in the free-stream may
generate long stream-wise streaks in the boundary layer, which later
may trigger secondary instability, leading to rapid increase of
high-frequency disturbances. Then possibly turbulent spots emerge,
and through their merging, lead to fully developed turbulence. This
description, however, is insufficient in the sense that it does not
provide the inherent mechanism of transition that during the transition,
a large number of waves with different frequencies and wave numbers
appear almost simultaneously, producing sufficiently large Reynolds
stress, so the mean flow profile can change rapidly from laminar to
turbulent. In this paper, such a mechanism will be figured out from
analyzing DNS data of transition.
Abstract: A current mirror (CM) based on self cascode MOSFETs low voltage analog and mixed mode structures has been proposed. The proposed CM has high output impedance and can operate at 0.5 V. P-Spice simulations confirm the high performance of this CM with a bandwidth of 6.0 GHz at input current of 100 μA.
Abstract: Design of a fixed parameter robust STATCOM controller for a multi-machine power system through an H-? based loop-shaping procedure is presented. The trial and error part of the graphical loop-shaping procedure has been eliminated by embedding a particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique in the design loop. Robust controllers were designed considering the detailed dynamics of the multi-machine system and results were compared with reduced order models. The robust strategy employing loop-shaping and PSO algorithms was observed to provide very good damping profile for a wide range of operation and for various disturbance conditions.
Abstract: Over 90% of the world trade is carried by the
international shipping industry. As most of the countries are
developing, seaborne trade continues to expand to bring benefits for
consumers across the world. Studies show that world trade will
increase 70-80% through shipping in the next 15-20 years. Present
global fleet of 70000 commercial ships consumes approximately 200
million tonnes of diesel fuel a year and it is expected that it will be
around 350 million tonnes a year by 2020. It will increase the
demand for fuel and also increase the concentration of CO2 in the
atmosphere. So, it-s essential to control this massive fuel
consumption and CO2 emission. The idea is to utilize a diesel-wind
hybrid system for ship propulsion. Use of wind energy by installing
modern wing-sails in ships can drastically reduce the consumption of
diesel fuel. A huge amount of wind energy is available in oceans.
Whenever wind is available the wing-sails would be deployed and
the diesel engine would be throttled down and still the same forward
speed would be maintained. Wind direction in a particular shipping
route is not same throughout; it changes depending upon the global
wind pattern which depends on the latitude. So, the wing-sail
orientation should be such that it optimizes the use of wind energy.
We have made a computer programme in which by feeding the data
regarding wind velocity, wind direction, ship-motion direction; we
can find out the best wing-sail position and fuel saving for
commercial ships. We have calculated net fuel saving in certain
international shipping routes, for instance, from Mumbai in India to
Durban in South Africa. Our estimates show that about 8.3% diesel
fuel can be saved by utilizing the wind. We are also developing an
experimental model of the ship employing airfoils (small scale wingsail)
and going to test it in National Wind Tunnel Facility in IIT
Kanpur in order to develop a control mechanism for a system of
airfoils.
Abstract: With the increase of economic behavior and the upgrade
of living standar, the ratio for people in Taiwan who own automobiles
and motorcycles have recently increased with multiples. Therefore,
parking issues will be a big challenge to facilitate traffic network and
ensure urban life quality. The Parking Guidance and Information
System is one of important systems for Advanced Traveler Information
Services (ATIS). This research proposes a parking guidance and
information system which integrates GPS and 3G network for a map on
the Geographic Information System to solution inadequate of roadside
information kanban. The system proposed in this study mainly includes
Parking Host, Parking Guidance and Information Server, Geographic
Map and Information System as well as Parking Guidance and
Information Browser. The study results show this system can increase
driver-s efficiency to find parking space and efficiently enhance
parking convenience in comparison with roadside kanban system.
Abstract: Online auctions are not very popular in Croatia. The
main reason for this is a very limited number of services which can
be used by Croatian users. Until recent times, even selling through
the most popular online auction site eBay wasn't possible because
PayPal services could not make payment to bank or debit card
accounts in Croatia. Furthermore, many foreign sellers do not offer
delivery of their products to Croatia which means that large
quantities of goods initially offered on such sites are not available.
With that in mind, it is necessary to analyze the buying and selling
habits of Croatian users and existing online auction sites, both
Croatian and foreign, and create a model for new domestic site. This
site will have to exploit every positive aspect of existing models and
neutralize every negative perception indicated by users in the survey
so that, hopefully, it would attract new users.
Abstract: A simple impedance matching technique for inset feed
grooved microstrip patch antenna based on the concept of coplanar
waveguide feed line has been developed and investigated for a
printed antenna at X-Band frequency of 10GHz. The proposed
technique has been used in the design of Linear Grooved Microstrip
patch antenna array. The characteristics of the antenna are
determined in terms of Return loss, VSWR, gain, radiation pattern
etc. The measured and simulated results presented are found to be in
good agreement.
Abstract: Urban road network traffic has become one of the
most studied research topics in the last decades. This is mainly due to
the enlargement of the cities and the growing number of motor
vehicles traveling in this road network. One of the most sensitive
problems is to verify if the network is congestion-free. Another
related problem is the automatic reconfiguration of the network
without building new roads to alleviate congestions. These problems
require an accurate model of the traffic to determine the steady state
of the system. An alternative is to simulate the traffic to see if there
are congestions and when and where they occur. One key issue is to
find an adequate model for road intersections. Once the model
established, either a large scale model is built or the intersection is
represented by its performance measures and simulation for analysis.
In both cases, it is important to seek the queueing model to represent
the road intersection. In this paper, we propose to model the road
intersection as a BCMP queueing network and we compare this
analytical model against a simulation model for validation.
Abstract: A novel path planning approach is presented to solve
optimal path in stochastic, time-varying networks under priori traffic
information. Most existing studies make use of dynamic programming
to find optimal path. However, those methods are proved to
be unable to obtain global optimal value, moreover, how to design
efficient algorithms is also another challenge.
This paper employs a decision theoretic framework for defining
optimal path: for a given source S and destination D in urban transit
network, we seek an S - D path of lowest expected travel time
where its link travel times are discrete random variables. To solve
deficiency caused by the methods of dynamic programming, such as
curse of dimensionality and violation of optimal principle, an integer
programming model is built to realize assignment of discrete travel
time variables to arcs. Simultaneously, pruning techniques are also
applied to reduce computation complexity in the algorithm. The final
experiments show the feasibility of the novel approach.
Abstract: In the context of global climate change, flooding and sea level rise is increasingly threatening coastal urban areas, in which large population is continuously concentrated. Dutch experiences in urban water system management provide high reference value for sustainable coastal urban development projects. Preliminary studies shows the urban water system in Almere, a typical Dutch polder city, have three kinds of operational modes, achieving functions as: (1) coastline control – strong multiple damming system prevents from storm surges and maintains sufficient capacity upon risks; (2) high flexibility – large area and widely scattered open water system greatly reduce local runoff and water level fluctuation; (3) internal water maintenance – weir and sluice system maintains relatively stable water level, providing excellent boating and landscaping service, coupling with water circulating model maintaining better water quality. Almere has provided plenty of hints and experiences for ongoing development of coastal cities in emerging economies.
Abstract: the work contains the results of complex investigation
related to the evaluation of condition of working blades of gas turbine
engines during fatigue tests by applying the acoustic emission
method. It demonstrates the possibility of estimating the fatigue
damage of blades in the process of factory tests. The acoustic
emission criteria for detecting and testing the kinetics of fatigue crack
distribution were detected. It also shows the high effectiveness of the
method for non-destructive testing of condition of solid and cooled
working blades for high-temperature gas turbine engines.
Abstract: The financial crisis has decreased the opportunities of
small businesses to acquire financing through conventional financial
actors, such as commercial banks. This credit constraint is partly the
reason for the emergence of new alternatives of financing, in addition
to the spreading opportunities for communication and secure
financial transfer through Internet. One of the most interesting venues
for finance is termed “crowdfunding". As the term suggests
crowdfunding is an appeal to prospective customers and investors to
form a crowd that will finance projects that otherwise would find it
hard to generate support through the most common financial actors.
Crowdfunding is in this paper divided into different models; the
threshold model, the microfinance model, the micro loan model and
the equity model. All these models add to the financial possibilities of
emerging entrepreneurs.
Abstract: Subsurface erosion in river banks and its details, in
spite of its occurrence in various parts of the world has rarely been
paid attention by researchers. In this paper, quantitative concept of
the subsurface bank erosion has been investigated for vertical banks.
Vertical banks were simulated experimentally by considering a sandy
erodible layer overlaid by clayey one under uniformly distributed
constant overhead pressure. Results of the experiments are indicated
that rate of sandy layer erosion is decreased by an increase in
overburden; likewise, substituting 20% of coarse (3.5 mm) sand layer
bed material by fine material (1.4 mm) may lead to a decrease in
erosion rate by one-third. This signifies the importance of the bed
material composition effect on sandy layers erosion due to subsurface
erosion in river banks.
Abstract: Performance of millimeter-wave (mm-wave) multiband
orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (MB-OFDM) ultrawideband
(UWB) signal generation using frequency quadrupling
technique and transmission over fiber is experimentally investigated.
The frequency quadrupling is achived by using only one Mach-
Zehnder modulator (MZM) that is biased at maximum transmission
(MATB) point. At the output, a frequency quadrupling signal is
obtained then sent to a second MZM. This MZM is used for MBOFDM
UWB signal modulation. In this work, we demonstrate 30-
GHz mm-wave wireless that carries three-bands OFDM UWB
signals, and error vector magnitude (EVM) is used to analyze the
transmission quality. It is found that our proposed technique leads to
an improvement of 3.5 dB in EVM at 40% of local oscillator (LO)
modulation with comparison to the technique using two cascaded
MZMs biased at minimum transmission (MITB) point.
