Abstract: In order to retrieve images efficiently from a large
database, a unique method integrating color and texture features
using genetic programming has been proposed. Opponent color
histogram which gives shadow, shade, and light intensity invariant
property is employed in the proposed framework for extracting color
features. For texture feature extraction, fast discrete curvelet
transform which captures more orientation information at different
scales is incorporated to represent curved like edges. The recent
scenario in the issues of image retrieval is to reduce the semantic gap
between user’s preference and low level features. To address this
concern, genetic algorithm combined with relevance feedback is
embedded to reduce semantic gap and retrieve user’s preference
images. Extensive and comparative experiments have been conducted
to evaluate proposed framework for content based image retrieval on
two databases, i.e., COIL-100 and Corel-1000. Experimental results
clearly show that the proposed system surpassed other existing
systems in terms of precision and recall. The proposed work achieves
highest performance with average precision of 88.2% on COIL-100
and 76.3% on Corel, the average recall of 69.9% on COIL and 76.3%
on Corel. Thus, the experimental results confirm that the proposed
content based image retrieval system architecture attains better
solution for image retrieval.
Abstract: Biodiesel is widely investigated to solve the twin
problem of depletion of fossil fuel and environmental degradation.
The main objective of the present work is to compare performance,
emissions, and combustion characteristics of biodiesel derived from
cotton seed oil in a diesel engine with the baseline results of
petrodiesel fuel. Tests have been conducted on a single cylinder, four
stroke CIDI diesel engine with a speed of 1500 rpm and a fixed
compression ratio of 17.5 at different load conditions. The
performance parameters evaluated include brake thermal efficiency,
brake specific fuel consumption, brake power, indicated mean
effective pressure, mechanical efficiency, and exhaust gas
temperature. Regarding combustion study, cylinder pressure, rate of
pressure rise, net heat release rate, cumulative heat release, mean gas
temperature, mass fraction burned, and fuel line pressure were
evaluated. The emission parameters such as carbon monoxide, carbon
dioxide, un-burnt hydrocarbon, oxides of nitrogen, and smoke
opacity were also measured by a smoke meter and an exhaust gas
analyzer and compared with baseline results. The brake thermal
efficiency of cotton seed oil methyl ester (CSOME) was lower than
that of petrodiesel and brake specific fuel consumption was found to
be higher. However, biodiesel resulted in the reduction of carbon
dioxide, un-burnt hydrocarbon, and smoke opacity at the expense of
nitrogen oxides. Carbon monoxide emissions for biodiesel was higher
at maximum output power. It has been found that the combustion
characteristics of cotton seed oil methyl ester closely followed those
of standard petrodiesel. The experimental results suggested that
biodiesel derived from cotton seed oil could be used as a good
substitute to petrodiesel fuel in a conventional diesel without any
modification.
Abstract: The early-stage damage detection in offshore
structures requires continuous structural health monitoring and for the
large area the position of sensors will also plays an important role in
the efficient damage detection. Determining the dynamic behavior of
offshore structures requires dense deployment of sensors. The wired
Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) systems are highly expensive
and always needs larger installation space to deploy. Wireless sensor
networks can enhance the SHM system by deployment of scalable
sensor network, which consumes lesser space. This paper presents the
results of wireless sensor network based Structural Health Monitoring
method applied to a scaled experimental model of offshore structure
that underwent wave loading. This method determines the
serviceability of the offshore structure which is subjected to various
environment loads. Wired and wireless sensors were installed in the
model and the response of the scaled BLSRP model under wave
loading was recorded. The wireless system discussed in this study is
the Raspberry pi board with Arm V6 processor which is programmed
to transmit the data acquired by the sensor to the server using Wi-Fi
adapter, the data is then hosted in the webpage. The data acquired
from the wireless and wired SHM systems were compared and the
design of the wireless system is verified.
Abstract: The field of instrumentation electronics is undergoing
an explosive growth, due to its wide range of applications. The
proliferation of electrical devices in a close working proximity can
negatively influence each other’s performance. The degradation in
the performance is due to electromagnetic interference (EMI). This paper investigates the negative effects of electromagnetic
interference originating in the General Purpose Interface Bus (GPIB)
control-network of the AC-DC transfer measurement system.
Remedial measures of reducing measurement errors and failure of
range of industrial devices due to EMI have been explored. The ACDC
transfer measurement system was analysed for the commonmode
(CM) EMI effects. Further investigation of coupling path as
well as much accurate identification of noise propagation mechanism
has been outlined. To prevent the occurrence of common-mode
(ground loops) which was identified between the GPIB system
control circuit and the measurement circuit, a microcontroller-driven
GPIB switching isolator device was designed, prototyped,
programmed and validated. This mitigation technique has been
explored to reduce EMI effectively.
Abstract: In this research, we propose to conduct diagnostic and
predictive analysis about the key factors and consequences of urban
population relocation. To achieve this goal, urban simulation models
extract the urban development trends as land use change patterns from
a variety of data sources. The results are treated as part of urban big
data with other information such as population change and economic
conditions. Multiple data mining methods are deployed on this data to
analyze nonlinear relationships between parameters. The result
determines the driving force of population relocation with respect to
urban sprawl and urban sustainability and their related parameters.
This work sets the stage for developing a comprehensive urban
simulation model for catering to specific questions by targeted users. It
contributes towards achieving sustainability as a whole.
Abstract: The current web has become a modern encyclopedia,
where people share their thoughts and ideas on various topics around
them. This kind of encyclopedia is very useful for other people who
are looking for answers to their questions. However, with the
growing popularity of social networking and blogging and ever
expanding network services, there has also been a growing diversity
of technologies along with a different structure of individual web
sites. It is therefore difficult to directly find a relevant answer for a
common Internet user. This paper presents a web application for the
real-time end-to-end analysis of selected Internet trends where the
trend can be whatever the people post online. The application
integrates fully configurable tools for data collection and analysis
using selected webometric algorithms, and for its chronological
visualization to user. It can be assumed that the application facilitates
the users to evaluate the quality of various products that are
mentioned online.
Abstract: In this corporate world, the technology of Web
services has grown rapidly and its significance for the development
of web based applications gradually rises over time. The success of
Business to Business integration rely on finding novel partners and
their services in a global business environment. However, the
selection of the most suitable Web service from the list of services
with the identical functionality is more vital. The satisfaction level of
the customer and the provider’s reputation of the Web service are
primarily depending on the range it reaches the customer’s
requirements. In most cases, the customer of the Web service feels
that he is spending for the service which is undelivered. This is
because the customer always thinks that the real functionality of the
web service is not reached. This will lead to change of the service
frequently. In this paper, a framework is proposed to evaluate the
Quality of Service (QoS) and its cost that makes the optimal
correlation between each other. In addition, this research work
proposes some management decision against the functional deviancy
of the web service that is guaranteed at time of selection.
Abstract: In this work, by replacing the traditional solid spokes with colloidal spokes, a vehicle wheel with a built-in suspension structure is proposed. Following the background and description of the wheel system, firstly, a vibration model of the wheel equipped with colloidal spokes is proposed, and based on such model the equivalent damping coefficients and spring constants are identified. Then, a modified model of a quarter-vehicle moving on a rough pavement is proposed in order to estimate the transmissibility of vibration from the road roughness to vehicle body. In the end, the optimal design of the colloidal spokes and the optimum number of colloidal spokes are decided in order to minimize the transmissibility of vibration, i.e., to maximize the ride comfort of the vehicle.
Abstract: This work aims to investigate the structure–property
relationship in ternary nanocomposites consisting of polypropylene
as the matrix, polyamide 66 as the minor phase and treated nanoclay
DELLITE 67G as the reinforcement. All PP/PA66/Nanoclay systems
with polypropylene grafted maleic anhydride PP-g-MAH as a
compatibilizer were prepared via melt compounding and
characterized in terms of nanoclay content. Morphological structure
was investigated by scanning electron microscopy. The rheological
behavior of the nanocomposites was determined by various methods,
viz melt flow index (MFI) and parallel plate rheological
measurements. The PP/PP-g-MAH/PA66 nanocomposites showed a homogeneous
morphology supporting the compatibility improvement between PP,
PA66, and nanoclay. SEM results revealed the formation of
nanocomposites as the nanoclay was intercalated and exfoliated. In
the ternary nanocomposites, the rheological behavior showed that, the
complex viscosity is increased with increasing the nanoclay. The results showed that the use of nanoclay affects the variations
of storage modulus (G′), loss modulus (G″) and the melt elasticity.
Abstract: The overall goal of this paper is to examine the
suitability and potential of the policies addressing the sustainability
and affordability of housing for returnees, and to determine the impact
of this policy on housing delivery for Afghan refugees. Housing is a
central component of the settlement experience of refugees. A positive
housing situation can facilitate many aspects of integration.
Unaffordable, and unsafe housing, however, can cause disruptions in
the entire settlement process. This paper aims to identify a suite of
built forms for housing that is both affordable and environmentally
sustainable for Afghan refugees. The result was the development of a
framework that enables the assessment of the overall performance of
various types of housing development in all zones of the country.
There is very little evidence that the present approach of housing
provision to the vagaries of market forces has provided affordable
housing, especially for Afghan refugees. There is a need to incorporate
social housing into the policy to assist people who cannot afford to
have their own houses.
Abstract: We investigate the large scale of networks in the
context of network survivability under attack. We use appropriate
techniques to evaluate and the attacker-based- and the defenderbased-
network survivability. The attacker is unaware of the operated
links by the defender. Each attacked link has some pre-specified
probability to be disconnected. The defender choice is so that to
maximize the chance of successfully sending the flow to the
destination node. The attacker however will select the cut-set with
the highest chance to be disabled in order to partition the network.
Moreover, we extend the problem to the case of selecting the best p
paths to operate by the defender and the best k cut-sets to target by
the attacker, for arbitrary integers p,k>1. We investigate some
variations of the problem and suggest polynomial-time solutions.
Abstract: Low density polyethylene (LDPE) nanocomposites
with 3, 5 and 7 wt. % cobalt ferrite (CoFe2O4) nanopowder fabricated
with extrusion mixing and followed up by hot press to reach compact
samples. The transmission/reflection measurements were carried out
with a network analyzer in the frequency range of 8-12 GHz. By
increasing the percent of CoFe2O4 nanopowder, reflection loss (S11)
increases, while transferring loss (S21) decreases. Reflectivity (R)
calculations made using S11 and S21. Increase in percent of CoFe2O4
nanopowder up to 7 wt. % in composite leaded to higher reflectivity
amount, and revealed that increasing the percent of CoFe2O4
nanopowder up to 7 wt. % leads to further microwave absorption in
8-12 GHz range.
Abstract: Success means different things for different people.
For us, project managers, it becomes even harder to actually find a
definition. Many factors have to be included in the evaluation.
Moreover, literature is not very helpful, lacking consensus and
neutrality. Post-implementation reviews (PIR) can be an efficient tool
in evaluating how things worked on a certain project. Despite the
visible progress, PIR is not a very detailed subject yet and there is not
common understanding in this matter. This may be the reason that
some organizations include it in the projects’ lifecycle and some do
not. Through this paper, we point out the reasons why all project
managers should pay proper attention to this important step and to the
elements which can be assessed, beside the already famous triple
constraints: cost, budget and time. It is essential to take notice that PIR is not a checklist. It brings the
edge in eliminating subjectivity and judging projects based on actual
proof. Based on our experience, our success indicator model,
presented in this paper, contributes to the success of the project! In
the same time, it increases trust among customers who will perceive
success more objectively.
Abstract: Segmentation of left ventricle (LV) from cardiac
ultrasound images provides a quantitative functional analysis of the
heart to diagnose disease. Active Shape Model (ASM) is widely used
for LV segmentation, but it suffers from the drawback that
initialization of the shape model is not sufficiently close to the target,
especially when dealing with abnormal shapes in disease. In this work,
a two-step framework is improved to achieve a fast and efficient LV
segmentation. First, a robust and efficient detection based on Hough
forest localizes cardiac feature points. Such feature points are used to
predict the initial fitting of the LV shape model. Second, ASM is
applied to further fit the LV shape model to the cardiac ultrasound
image. With the robust initialization, ASM is able to achieve more
accurate segmentation. The performance of the proposed method is
evaluated on a dataset of 810 cardiac ultrasound images that are mostly
abnormal shapes. This proposed method is compared with several
combinations of ASM and existing initialization methods. Our
experiment results demonstrate that accuracy of the proposed method
for feature point detection for initialization was 40% higher than the
existing methods. Moreover, the proposed method significantly
reduces the number of necessary ASM fitting loops and thus speeds up
the whole segmentation process. Therefore, the proposed method is
able to achieve more accurate and efficient segmentation results and is
applicable to unusual shapes of heart with cardiac diseases, such as left
atrial enlargement.
Abstract: Digital images are widely used in computer
applications. To store or transmit the uncompressed images
requires considerable storage capacity and transmission bandwidth.
Image compression is a means to perform transmission or storage of
visual data in the most economical way. This paper explains about
how images can be encoded to be transmitted in a multiplexing
time-frequency domain channel. Multiplexing involves packing
signals together whose representations are compact in the working
domain. In order to optimize transmission resources each 4 × 4
pixel block of the image is transformed by a suitable polynomial
approximation, into a minimal number of coefficients. Less than
4 × 4 coefficients in one block spares a significant amount of
transmitted information, but some information is lost. Different
approximations for image transformation have been evaluated as
polynomial representation (Vandermonde matrix), least squares +
gradient descent, 1-D Chebyshev polynomials, 2-D Chebyshev
polynomials or singular value decomposition (SVD). Results have
been compared in terms of nominal compression rate (NCR),
compression ratio (CR) and peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR)
in order to minimize the error function defined as the difference
between the original pixel gray levels and the approximated
polynomial output. Polynomial coefficients have been later encoded
and handled for generating chirps in a target rate of about two
chirps per 4 × 4 pixel block and then submitted to a transmission
multiplexing operation in the time-frequency domain.
Abstract: This research work is an experimental study, through
development of an adhesive from Prosopis africana endosperm. The
prosopis seed for this work were obtained from Enugu State in the
South East part of Nigeria. The seeds were prepared by separating the
endosperm from the seed coat and cotyledon. Three methods were
used to separate them, which are acidic method, roasting method and
boiling method. 20g of seed were treated with different
concentrations (25, 40, 55, 70, and 85% w/w) at 100°C and constant
time (30 minutes), under continuous stirring with magnetic stirrer.
Also 20g of seed were treated with sulphuric acid of concentrations
40% w/w at 100°C with different time (10, 15, 20, 25, 30 minutes),
under continuous stirring with magnetic stirrer. Finally, 20g of seed
were treated with sulphuric acid of concentrations 40% w/w at
different temperature (20°C, 40°C, 60°C, 80°C, and 100°C) with
constant time (30 minutes), under continuous stirring with magnetic
stirrer. The whole endosperm extracted was adhesive. The physical
properties of the adhesive were determined (appearance, odour, taste,
solubility, pH, size, and binding strength). The percentage of the
adhesive yield makes the commercialization of the seed in Nigeria
possible and profitable. The very high viscosity attained at low
concentrations makes prosopis adhesive an excellent thickener in the
food industry.
Abstract: The objective of this study was to examine the
relationship between transformational leadership and innovative work
behavior and to evaluate the mediating role of leader-member
exchange relationships (LMX) on the assumed relationship. This
study has focused on the suggestion that LMX might emerge through
transformational leadership behaviors and thus could mediate the
relationship between transformational leadership and innovative
behavior. A cross-sectional survey research has been conducted on
the relationship these leadership approaches and their impact on
organizational HRM-outcomes have been conducted on two
organizations operating in the technical sector in Istanbul-Turkey.
The results of the research have supported the hypotheses.
Transformational leadership was positively related to the innovative
behaviors and LMX emerged to mediate that relationship.
Abstract: In wireless sensor network, sensor node transmits the
sensed data to the sink node in multi-hop communication
periodically. This high traffic induces congestion at the node which is
present one-hop distance to the sink node. The packet transmission
and reception rate of these nodes should be very high, when
compared to other sensor nodes in the network. Therefore, the energy
consumption of that node is very high and this effect is known as the
“funneling effect”. The tree based-data aggregation technique
(TBDA) is used to reduce the energy consumption of the node. The
throughput of the overall performance shows a considerable decrease
in the number of packet transmissions to the sink node. The proposed
scheme, TBDA, avoids the funneling effect and extends the lifetime
of the wireless sensor network. The average case time complexity for
inserting the node in the tree is O(n log n) and for the worst case time
complexity is O(n2).
Abstract: In this paper, an attempt has been made for the design
of a robotic library using an intelligent system. The robot works on
the ARM microprocessor, motor driver circuit with 5 degrees of
freedom with Wi-Fi and GPS based communication protocol. The
authenticity of the library books is controlled by RFID. The proposed
robotic library system is facilitated with embedded system and ARM.
In this library issuance system, the previous potential readers’
authentic review reports have been taken into consideration for
recommending suitable books to the deserving new users and the
issuance of books or periodicals is based on the users’ decision. We
have conjectured that the Wi-Fi based robotic library management
system would allow fast transaction of books issuance and it also
produces quality readers.
Abstract: Test automation allows performing difficult and time
consuming manual software testing tasks efficiently, quickly and
repeatedly. However, development and maintenance of automated
tests is expensive, so it needs a proper prioritization what to automate
first. This paper describes a simple yet efficient approach for such
prioritization of test cases based on the effort needed for both manual
execution and software test automation. The suggested approach is
very flexible because it allows working with a variety of assessment
methods, and adding or removing new candidates at any time. The
theoretical ideas presented in this article have been successfully
applied in real world situations in several software companies by the
authors and their colleagues including testing of real estate websites,
cryptographic and authentication solutions, OSGi-based middleware
framework that has been applied in various systems for smart homes,
connected cars, production plants, sensors, home appliances, car head
units and engine control units (ECU), vending machines, medical
devices, industry equipment and other devices that either contain or
are connected to an embedded service gateway.
