Abstract: A Laboratory-scale packed bed reactor with microbial
cellulose as the biofilm carrier was used to investigate the
denitrification of high-strength nitrate wastewater with specific
emphasis on the effect the nitrogen loading rate and hydraulic
retention time. Ethanol was added as a carbon source for
denitrification. As a result of this investigation, it was found that up
to 500 mg/l feed nitrate concentration the present system is able to
produce an effluent with nitrate content below 10 ppm at 3 h
hydraulic retention time. The highest observed denitrification rate
was 4.57 kg NO3-N/ (m3 .d) at a nitrate load of 5.64 kg NO3-
N/(m3 .d), and removal efficiencies higher than 90% were obtained
for loads up to 4.2 kg NO3-N/(m3 .d). A mass relation between COD
consumed and NO3-N removed around 2.82 was observed. This
continuous-flow bioreactor proved an efficient denitrification system
with a relatively low retention time.
Abstract: Saturated hydraulic conductivity is one of the soil
hydraulic properties which is widely used in environmental studies
especially subsurface ground water. Since, its direct measurement is
time consuming and therefore costly, indirect methods such as
pedotransfer functions have been developed based on multiple linear
regression equations and neural networks model in order to estimate
saturated hydraulic conductivity from readily available soil
properties e.g. sand, silt, and clay contents, bulk density, and organic
matter. The objective of this study was to develop neural networks
(NNs) model to estimate saturated hydraulic conductivity from
available parameters such as sand and clay contents, bulk density,
van Genuchten retention model parameters (i.e. r
θ , α , and n) as well
as effective porosity. We used two methods to calculate effective
porosity: : (1) eff s FC φ =θ -θ , and (2) inf φ =θ -θ eff s , in which s
θ is
saturated water content, FC θ is water content retained at -33 kPa
matric potential, and inf θ is water content at the inflection point.
Total of 311 soil samples from the UNSODA database was divided
into three groups as 187 for the training, 62 for the validation (to
avoid over training), and 62 for the test of NNs model. A commercial
neural network toolbox of MATLAB software with a multi-layer
perceptron model and back propagation algorithm were used for the
training procedure. The statistical parameters such as correlation
coefficient (R2), and mean square error (MSE) were also used to
evaluate the developed NNs model. The best number of neurons in
the middle layer of NNs model for methods (1) and (2) were
calculated 44 and 6, respectively. The R2 and MSE values of the test
phase were determined for method (1), 0.94 and 0.0016, and for
method (2), 0.98 and 0.00065, respectively, which shows that method
(2) estimates saturated hydraulic conductivity better than method (1).
Abstract: Simulation accuracy by recent dynamic vehicle
simulation multidimensional expression significantly has progressed
and acceptable results not only for passive vehicles but also for
active vehicles normally equipped with advanced electronic
components is also provided. Recently, one of the subjects that has it
been considered, is increasing the safety car in design. Therefore,
many efforts have been done to increase vehicle stability especially
in the turn. One of the most important efforts is adjusting the camber
angle in the car suspension system. Optimum control camber angle in
addition to the vehicle stability is effective in the wheel adhesion on
road, reducing rubber abrasion and acceleration and braking. Since
the increase or decrease in the camber angle impacts on the stability
of vehicles, in this paper, a car suspension system mechanism is
introduced that could be adjust camber angle and the mechanism is
application and also inexpensive. In order to reach this purpose, in
this paper, a passive double wishbone suspension system with
variable camber angle is introduced and then variable camber
mechanism designed and analyzed for study the designed system
performance, this mechanism is modeled in Visual Nastran software
and kinematic analysis is revealed.
Abstract: The setting agent Ca(OH)2 for activation of slag
cement is used in the proportions of 0%, 2%, 4%, 6%, 8% and 10%
by various methods (substitution and addition by mass of slag
cement). The physical properties of slag cement activated by the
calcium hydroxide at anhydrous and hydrated states (fineness,
particle size distribution, consistency of the cement pastes and setting
times) were studied. The activation method by the mineral activator
of slag cement (latent hydraulicity) accelerates the hydration process
and reduces the setting times of the cement activated.
Abstract: Pressure wave velocity in a hydraulic system was
determined using piezo pressure sensors without removing fluid from
the system. The measurements were carried out in a low pressure
range (0.2 – 6 bar) and the results were compared with the results of
other studies. This method is not as accurate as measurement with
separate measurement equipment, but the fluid is in the actual
machine the whole time and the effect of air is taken into
consideration if air is present in the system. The amount of air is
estimated by calculations and comparisons between other studies.
This measurement equipment can also be installed in an existing
machine and it can be programmed so that it measures in real time.
Thus, it could be used e.g. to control dampers.
Abstract: loss of feedwater accident is one of the frequently sever accidents in steam boiler facilities. It threatens the system structural integrity and generates serious hazards and economic loses. The safety analysis of the thermal installations, based extensively on the numeric simulation. The simulation analysis using realistic computer codes like Relap5/Mod3.2 will help understand steam boiler thermal-hydraulic behavior during normal and abnormal conditions. In this study, we are interested on the evaluation of the radiant steam boiler assessment and response to loss-of-feedwater accident. Pressure, temperature and flow rate profiles are presented in various steam boiler system components. The obtained results demonstrate the importance and capability of the Relap5/Mod3.2 code in the thermal-hydraulic analysis of the steam boiler facilities.
Abstract: This research was conducted in the Lower Ping River
Basin downstream of the Bhumibol Dam and the Lower Wang River
Basin in Tak Province, Thailand. Most of the tributary streams of the
Ping can be considered as ungauged catchments. There are 10-
pumping station installation at both river banks of the Ping in Tak
Province. Recently, most of them could not fully operate due to the
water amount in the river below the level that would be pumping,
even though included water from the natural river and released flow
from the Bhumibol Dam. The aim of this research was to increase the
performance of those pumping stations using weir projects in the
Ping. Therefore, the river analysis system model (HEC-RAS) was
applied to study the hydraulic behavior of water surface profiles in
the Ping River with both cases of existing conditions and proposed
weirs during the violent flood in 2011 and severe drought in 2013.
Moreover, the hydrologic modeling system (HMS) was applied to
simulate lateral streamflow hydrograph from ungauged catchments of
the Ping. The results of HEC-RAS model calibration with existing
conditions in 2011 showed best trial roughness coefficient for the
main channel of 0.026. The simulated water surface levels fitted to
observation data with R2 of 0.8175. The model was applied to 3
proposed cascade weirs with 2.35 m in height and found surcharge
water level only 0.27 m higher than the existing condition in 2011.
Moreover, those weirs could maintain river water levels and increase
of those pumping performances during less river flow in 2013.
Abstract: In this study we propose a novel monitor hydraulic
automatic gauge control (HAGC) system based on fuzzy feedforward
controller. This is used in the development of cold rolling
mill automation system to improve the quality of cold strip. According to features/ properties of entry steel strip like its average
yield stress, width of strip, and desired exit thickness, this controller realizes the compensation for the exit thickness error. The traditional methods of adjusting the roller position, can-t tolerate the variance in
the entry steel strip. The proposed method uses a mathematical model
of the system together with the expert knowledge to perform this adjustment while minimizing the effect of the stated problem. In
order to improve the speed of the controller in rejecting disturbances
introduced by entry strip thickness variations, expert knowledge is added as a feed-forward term to the HAGC system. Simulation
results for the application of the proposed controller to a real cold mill show that the exit strip quality is highly improved.
Abstract: The paper investigates parallel channel instabilities of
natural circulation boiling water reactor. A thermal-hydraulic model
is developed to simulate two-phase flow behavior in the natural circulation boiling water reactor (NCBWR) with the incorporation of
ex-core components and recirculation loop such as steam separator, down-comer, lower-horizontal section and upper-horizontal section
and then, numerical analysis is carried out for parallel channel
instabilities of the reactor undergoing both in-phase and out-of-phase
modes of oscillations. To analyze the relative effect on stability of the reactor due to inclusion of various ex-core components and
recirculation loop, marginal stable point is obtained at a particular inlet enthalpy of the reactor core without the inclusion of ex-core
components and recirculation loop and then with the inclusion of the
same. Numerical simulations are also conducted to determine the
relative dominance between two modes of oscillations i.e. in-phase and out-of-phase. Simulations are also carried out when the channels
are subjected to asymmetric power distribution keeping the inlet enthalpy same.
Abstract: This work describes a CACSD tool for automatic design of robust controllers for hydraulic turbines. The tool calculates the optimal controller using the MATLAB hinfopt function and it
serves as a practical and effective solution for the laborious task of
designing a different controller for each type of turbine and generator, and different parameters and conditions of the plant. Results of the simulation of a generating unit subject to parameters
variation show the accuracy and efficiency of the obtained robust
controllers.
Abstract: Threedimensional numerical simulations are conducted on a full scale CANDU Moderator and Transient variations of the temperature and velocity distributions inside the tank are determined. The results show that the flow and temperature distributions inside the moderator tank are three dimensional and no symmetry plane can be identified.Competition between the upward moving buoyancy driven flows and the downward moving momentum driven flows, results in the formation of circulation zones. The moderator tank operates in the buoyancy driven mode and any small disturbances in the flow or temperature makes the system unstable and asymmetric. Different types of temperature fluctuations are noted inside the tank: (i) large amplitude are at the boundaries between the hot and cold (ii) low amplitude are in the core of the tank (iii) high frequency fluctuations are in the regions with high velocities and (iv) low frequency fluctuations are in the regions with lower velocities.
Abstract: This study investigated the effect of cross sectional
geometry on sediment transport rate. The processes of sediment
transport are generally associated to environmental management,
such as pollution caused by the forming of suspended sediment in the
channel network of a watershed and preserving physical habitats and
native vegetations, and engineering applications, such as the
influence of sediment transport on hydraulic structures and flood
control design. Many equations have been proposed for computing
the sediment transport, the influence of many variables on sediment
transport has been understood; however, the effect of other variables
still requires further research. For open channel flow, sediment
transport capacity is recognized to be a function of friction slope,
flow velocity, grain size, grain roughness and form roughness, the
hydraulic radius of the bed section and the type and quantity of
vegetation cover. The effect of cross sectional geometry of the
channel on sediment transport is one of the variables that need
additional investigation. The width-depth ratio (W/d) is a
comparative indicator of the channel shape. The width is the total
distance across the channel and the depth is the mean depth of the
channel. The mean depth is best calculated as total cross-sectional
area divided by the top width. Channels with high W/d ratios tend to
be shallow and wide, while channels with low (W/d) ratios tend to be
narrow and deep. In this study, the effects of the width-depth ratio on
sediment transport was demonstrated theoretically by inserting the
shape factor in sediment continuity equation and analytically by
utilizing the field data sets for Yalobusha River. It was found by
utilizing the two approaches as a width-depth ratio increases the
sediment transport decreases.
Abstract: Factor analysis was applied to two stages biogas
production from banana stem waste allowing a screening of the
experimental variables second stage temperature (T), organic loading
rates (OLR) and hydraulic retention times (HRT). Biogas production
was found to be strongly influenced by all the above experimental
variables. Results from factorial analysis have shown that all
variables which were HRT, OLR and T have significant effect to
biogas production. Increased in HRT and OLR could increased the
biogas yield. The performance was tested under the conditions of
various T (35oC-60oC), OLR (0.3 g TS/l.d–1.9 gTS/l.d), and HRT (3
d–15 d). Conditions for temperature, OLR and HRT in this study
were based on the best range obtained from literature review.
Abstract: Sediment loads transfer in hydraulic installations and their consequences for the O&M of modern canal systems is emerging as one of the most important considerations in hydraulic engineering projects apriticularly those which are inteded to feed the irrigation and draiange schemes of large command areas such as the Dez and Mogahn in Iran.. The aim of this paper is to investigate the applicability of the vortex tube as a viable means of extracting sediment loads entering the canal systems in general and the water inatke structures in particulars. The Western conveyance canal of the Dez Diversion weir which feeds the Karkheh Flood Plain in Sothwestern Dezful has been used as the case study using the data from the Dastmashan Hydrometric Station. The SHARC software has been used as an analytical framework to interprete the data. Results show that given the grain size D50 and the canal turbulence the adaption length from the beginning of the canal and after the diversion dam is estimated at 477 m, a point which is suitable for laying the vortex tube.
Abstract: The stilling basins are commonly used to dissipate the
energy and protect the downstream floor from erosion. The aim of
the present experimental work is to improve the roughened stilling
basin using T-shape roughness instead of the regular cubic one and
design this new shape. As a result of the present work the best
intensity and the best roughness length are identified. Also, it is
found that the T-shape roughness save materials and reduce the jump
length compared to the cubic one. Sensitivity analysis was performed
and it was noticed that the change in the length of jump is more
sensitive to the change in roughness length than the change in
intensity.
Abstract: This study evaluates the performance of horizontal
subsurface flow constructed wetland (HSSF-CW) for the removal of
chlorinated resin and fatty acids (RFAs) from pulp and paper mill
wastewater. The dimensions of the treatment system were 3.5 m x 1.5
m x 0.28 m with surface area of 5.25 m2, filled with fine sand and
gravel. The cell was planted with an ornamental plant species Canna
indica. The removal efficiency of chlorinated RFAs was in the range
of 92-96% at the hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 5.9 days. Plant
biomass and soil (sand and gravel) were analyzed for chlorinated
RFAs content. No chlorinated RFAs were detected in plant biomass
but detected in soil samples. Mass balance studies of chlorinated
RFAs in HSSF-CW were also carried out.
Abstract: The present investigation was undertaken to explore the biogas potentiality of Jatropha (Jatropha curcas, Euphorbiaceae) Fruit Coat (JFC) alone and in combination with cattle dung (CD) in various proportions at 15 per cent total solids by batch phase anaerobic digestion for a period of ten weeks HRT (Hydraulic Retention Time) under a temperature of 35°C+1°C. The maximum biogas production was noticed in Cattle dung and Jatropha Fruit Coat in 2:1 ratio with 403.84 L/kg dry matter followed by 3:1,1:2, 1:1 and 1:3 having 329.66, 219.77, 217.79, 203.64 L /kg dm respectively as compared to 178.49 L/kg dm in CD alone. The JFC alone found to produce 91 per cent of total biogas that obtained from Cattle dung. The per cent methane content of the biogas in all the treatments was found on par with Cattle dung.
Abstract: The modeling of water transfer in the unsaturated zone
uses techniques and methods of the soil physics to solve the
Richards-s equation. However, there is a disaccord between the size
of the measurements provided by the soil physics and the size of the
fields of hydrological modeling problem, to which is added the
strong spatial variability of soil hydraulic properties. The objective of
this work was to develop a methodology to estimate the
hydrodynamic parameters for modeling water transfers at different
hydrological scales in the soil-plant atmosphere systems.

A combination of electronic and hydraulic systems is widely used since it combines the advantages of both. Hydraulic systems are widely spread because of their properties as accuracy, flexibility, high horsepower-to-weight ratio, fast starting, stopping and reversal with smoothness and precision, and simplicity of operations. On the other hand, the modern control of hydraulic systems is based on control of the circuit fed to the inductive solenoid that controls the position of the hydraulic valve. Since this circuit may be easily handled by PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) signal with a proper frequency, the combination of electrical and hydraulic systems became very fruitful and usable in specific areas as airplane and military industry. The study shows and discusses the experimental results obtained by the control strategy of neural network control using MATLAB and SIMULINK [1]. Finally, the special attention was paid to the possibility of neuro-controller design and its application to control of electro-hydraulic systems and to make comparative with other kinds of control.
