Abstract: The scale dependence of the strength of virtually homogeneous rock is usually considered to be insignificant but the spectrum of discontinuities plays a very important role for the strength of differently sized rock elements and also controls the rock creep strain. Large-scale load tests comprised recording of the creep strain rate that was found to be strongly retarded and negligible for stresses lower than about 1/3 of the failure load. For higher stresses creep took place according to a log time law representing secondary creep that ultimately changed to tertiary creep and failure.
Abstract: To compute dynamic characteristics of nonlinear viscoelastic springs with elastic structures having huge degree-of-freedom, Yamaguchi proposed a new fast numerical method using finite element method [1]-[2]. In this method, restoring forces of the springs are expressed using power series of their elongation. In the expression, nonlinear hysteresis damping is introduced. In this expression, nonlinear complex spring constants are introduced. Finite element for the nonlinear spring having complex coefficients is expressed and is connected to the elastic structures modeled by linear solid finite element. Further, to save computational time, the discrete equations in physical coordinate are transformed into the nonlinear ordinary coupled equations using normal coordinate corresponding to linear natural modes. In this report, the proposed method is applied to simulation for impact responses of a viscoelastic shock absorber with an elastic structure (an S-shaped structure) by colliding with a concentrated mass. The concentrated mass has initial velocities and collides with the shock absorber. Accelerations of the elastic structure and the concentrated mass are measured using Levitation Mass Method proposed by Fujii [3]. The calculated accelerations from the proposed FEM, corresponds to the experimental ones. Moreover, using this method, we also investigate dynamic errors of the S-shaped force transducer due to elastic mode in the S-shaped structure.
Abstract: A study of various turbulent inflow generation methods
was performed to compare their relative effectiveness for LES
computations of turbulent boundary layers. This study confirmed
the quality of the turbulent information produced by the family of
recycling and rescaling methods which take information from within
the computational domain. Furthermore, more general inflow methods
also proved applicable to such simulations, with a precursor-like
inflow and a random inflow augmented with forcing planes showing
promising results.
Abstract: The flow field in a centrifugal fan is highly complex
with flow reversal taking place on the suction side of impeller and
diffuser vanes. Generally performance of the centrifugal fan could be
enhanced by judiciously introducing splitter vanes so as to improve
the diffusion process. An extensive numerical whole field analysis on
the effect of splitter vanes placed in discrete regions of suspected
separation points is possible using CFD. This paper examines the
effect of splitter vanes corresponding to various geometrical
locations on the impeller and diffuser. The analysis shows that the
splitter vanes located near the diffuser exit improves the static
pressure recovery across the diffusing domain to a larger extent. Also
it is found that splitter vanes located at the impeller trailing edge and
diffuser leading edge at the mid-span of the circumferential distance
between the blades show a marginal improvement in the static
pressure recovery across the fan. However, splitters provided near to
the suction side of the impeller trailing edge (25% of the
circumferential gap between the impeller blades towards the suction
side), adversely affect the static pressure recovery of the fan.
Abstract: This paper focuses on the calibration problem of a
multi-view shooting system designed for the production of 3D
content for auto-stereoscopic visualization. The considered multiview
camera is characterized by coplanar and decentered image
sensors regarding to the corresponding optical axis. Based on the
Faugéras and Toscani-s calibration approach, a calibration method is
herein proposed for the case of multi-view camera with parallel and
decentered image sensors. At first, the geometrical model of the
shooting system is recalled and some industrial prototypes with some
shooting simulations are presented. Next, the development of the
proposed calibration method is detailed. Finally, some simulation
results are presented before ending with some conclusions about this
work.
Abstract: In this work, stationary hot-wire measurements are
carried out to investigate the characteristics of a round free jet in its
potential core region (0 ≤ x/d ≤ 10). Measurements are carried out on
an incompressible round jet for a range of Reynolds numbers from
4000 to 8000, calculated based on the jet exit mean velocity and the
nozzle diameter. The effect of flow velocity on the development
characteristics of the jet in the core region is analyzed. Timeaveraged
statistics, spectra of velocity and its higher order moments
are presented and explained.
Abstract: This paper presents the influence of preloading on a)
the contact tractions, b) slip levels and c) stresses at the dovetail
blade-disc interface of an aero-engine through a three-dimensional
(3D) finite element (FE) modeling and analysis. The preloading is
applied by an interference fit at the dovetail interface and the bulk
loading is applied through the rotational speed of rotor. Preloading at
the dovetail interface reduces the peak contact pressure developed
due to bulk loading up to 35%, and reduces the peak contact pressure
and stress difference between top and bottom contact edges.
Increasing the level of preloading reduces the cyclic stress amplitude
at the interface up to certain values of preload and as a consequence,
an improvement in fatigue life could be expected. Fretting damage,
due to vibration and wind milling effect during engine ground
condition, can be minimized by preloading the dovetail interface.
Abstract: MOC (method of cell) is a new method of investigating
wave propagating in material with periodic microstructure, and can
reflect the effect of microstructure. Wave propagation in periodically
laminated medium consisting of linearly elastic layers can be treated
as a special application of this method. In this paper, it was used to
simulate the dynamic response of carbon-phenolic to impulsive
loading under certain boundary conditions. From the comparison
between the results obtained from this method and the exact results
based on propagator matrix theory, excellent agreement is achieved.
Conclusion can be made that the oscillation periodicity is decided by
the thickness of sub-cells. In the end, the NHDMOC method, which
permits studying stress wave propagation with one dimensional strain,
was applied to study the one-dimensional stress wave propagation. In
this paper, the ZWT nonlinear visco-elastic constitutive relationship
with 7 parameters, NHDMOC, and corresponding equations were
deduced. The equations were verified, comparing the elastic stress
wave propagation in SHPB with, respectively, the elastic and the
visco-elastic bar. Finally the dispersion and attenuation of stress wave
in SHPB with visco-elastic bar was studied.
Abstract: This paper describes an experimental, theoretical
model and numerical study of concentrated vortex flow past a sphere
in a hydraulic check valve. The phenomenon of the rotation of the
ball around the axis of the device through which liquid flows has
been found. That is, due to the rotation of the sphere in the check
valve vibration is caused. We observe the rotation of the sphere
around the longitudinal axis of the check valve. This rotation is
induced by a vortex shedding from the sphere. We will discuss
computational simulation and experimental investigations of this
strong sphere rotation. The frequency of the sphere vibration and
interaction with the check valve wall has been measured as a function
of the wide range Reynolds Number. The validity of the
computational simulation and of the assumptions on which it is based
has been proved experimentally. This study demonstrates the
possibility to control the vibrations in a hydraulic system and proves
to be very effective suppression of the self-excited vibration.
Abstract: Helical milling operations are used to generate or
enlarge boreholes by means of a milling tool. The bore diameter can be
adjusted through the diameter of the helical path. The kinematics of
helical milling on a three axis machine tool is analysed firstly. The
relationships between processing parameters, cutting tool geometry
characters with machined hole feature are formulated. The feed motion
of the cutting tool has been decomposed to plane circular feed and
axial linear motion. In this paper, the time varying cutting forces acted
on the side cutting edges and end cutting edges of the flat end cylinder
miller is analysed using a discrete method separately. These two
components then are combined to produce the cutting force model
considering the complicated interaction between the cutters and
workpiece. The time varying cutting force model describes the
instantaneous cutting force during processing. This model could be
used to predict cutting force, calculate statics deflection of cutter and
workpiece, and also could be the foundation of dynamics model and
predicting chatter limitation of the helical milling operations.
Abstract: In the crack growth analysis, the Stress Intensity
Factor (SIF) is a fundamental prerequisite. In the present study, the
mode I stress intensity factor (SIF) of three-dimensional penny-
Shaped crack is obtained in an isotropic elastic cylindrical medium
with arbitrary dimensions under arbitrary loading at the top of the
cylinder, by the semi-analytical method based on the Rayleigh-Ritz
method. This method that is based on minimizing the potential
energy amount of the whole of the system, gives a very close results
to the previous studies. Defining the displacements (elastic fields) by
hypothetical functions in a defined coordinate system is the base of
this research. So for creating the singularity conditions at the tip of
the crack the appropriate terms should be found.
Abstract: The effect of Alumina nanoparticle size on thermophysical
properties, heat transfer performance and pressure loss characteristics of
Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF)-Al2O3 nanofluids is studied experimentally for
the proposed application of regenerative cooling of semi-cryogenic rocket
engine thrust chambers. Al2O3 particles with mean diameters of 50 nm or 150
nm are dispersed in ATF. At 500C and 0.3% particle volume concentration,
the bigger particles show increases of 17% in thermal conductivity and 55% in
viscosity, whereas the smaller particles show corresponding increases of 21%
and 22% for thermal conductivity and viscosity respectively. Contrary to these
results, experiments to study the heat transfer performance and pressure loss
characteristics show that at the same pumping power, the maximum
enhancement in heat transfer coefficient at 500C and 0.3% concentration is
approximately 47% using bigger particles, whereas it is only 36% using
smaller particles.
Abstract: In recent years, a new numerical method has been
developed, the extended finite element method (X-FEM). The
objective of this work is to exploit the (X-FEM) for the treatment of
the fracture mechanics problems on 3D geometries, where we
showed the ability of this method to simulate the fatigue crack
growth into two cases: edge and central crack. In the results we
compared the six first natural frequencies of mode shapes uncracking
with the cracking initiation in the structure, and showed the stress
intensity factor (SIF) evolution function as crack size propagation
into structure, the analytical validation of (SIF) is presented. For to
evidence the aspects of this method, all result is compared between
FEA and X-FEM.
Abstract: The main issue in sweetening natural gas is H2S
dissociation. The present study is concerned with simulating thermal
dissociation of H2S in industrial natural gas carbon black furnace.
The comparison of calculated results against experimental
measurements shows good agreement. The results show that sulfur
derived from H2S thermal dissociation peaked at φ=0.95. H2S
thermal dissociation is enhanced in equivalence ratio upper than 1
and H2S oxidization is increased in equivalence ratio lower than 1.
H2 concentration of H2S thermal dissociation is increased with
increase of equivalence ratio up to 1. Also, H2S concentration
decreased in outlet as equivalence ratio increases. H2S thermal
dissociation to hydrogen and Sulfur reduces its toxic characteristics
and make economical benefits.
Abstract: Paper presents knowledge about types of test in area
of materials properties of selected methods of rapid prototyping
technologies. In today used rapid prototyping technologies for
production of models and final parts are used materials in initial state
as solid, liquid or powder material structure. In solid state are used
various forms such as pellets, wire or laminates. Basic range
materials include paper, nylon, wax, resins, metals and ceramics. In
Fused Deposition Modeling (FDM) rapid prototyping technology are
mainly used as basic materials ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene
Styrene), polyamide, polycarbonate, polyethylene and polypropylene.
For advanced FDM applications are used special materials as silicon
nitrate, PZT (Piezoceramic Material - Lead Zirconate Titanate),
aluminium oxide, hydroxypatite and stainless steel.
Abstract: This paper investigates the aerodynamic characters of a model ducted fan system, analyses the basic principle of the effect of thrust promotion and torque reduction, discovers the relationship between the revolutions per minute(RPM) of the fan and the characters of thrust, as well as system torque. Firstly a model ducted fan has been designed and manufactured according to the specific structure of flow field, then CFD simulation has been carried out to analyze such aerodynamics, finally bench tests have been used to validate the simulation results and system configuration.
Abstract: Several approaches such as linear programming, network
modeling, greedy heuristic and decision support system are well-known
approaches in solving irregular airline operation problem. This paper
presents an alternative approach based on Multi Objective Micro Genetic
Algorithm. The aim of this research is to introduce the concept of Multi
Objective Micro Genetic Algorithm as a tool to solve irregular airline
operation, combine and reroute problem. The experiment result indicated
that the model could obtain optimal solutions within a few second.
Abstract: The high temperature degree and uniform
Temperature Distribution (TD) on surface of cookware which contact
with food are effective factors for improving cookware application.
Additionally, the ability of pan material in retaining the heat and nonreactivity
with foods are other significant properties. It is difficult for
single material to meet a wide variety of demands such as superior
thermal and chemical properties. Multi-Layer Plate (MLP) makes
more regular TD. In this study the main objectives are to find the best
structure (single or multi-layer) and materials to provide maximum
temperature degree and uniform TD up side surface of pan. And also
heat retaining of used metals with goal of improving the thermal
quality of pan to economize the energy. To achieve this aim were
employed Finite Element Method (FEM) for analyzing transient
thermal behavior of applied materials. The analysis has been
extended for different metals, we achieved the best temperature
profile and heat retaining in Copper/ Stainless Steel MLP.
Abstract: A new generation of manufacturing machines
so-called MIMCA (modular and integrated machine control
architecture) capable of handling much increased complexity in
manufacturing control-systems is presented. Requirement for more
flexible and effective control systems for manufacturing machine
systems is investigated and dimensioned-which highlights a need for
improved means of coordinating and monitoring production
machinery and equipment used to- transport material. The MIMCA
supports simulation based on machine modeling, was conceived by
the authors to address the issues. Essentially MIMCA comprises an
organized unification of selected architectural frameworks and
modeling methods, which include: NISTRCS, UMC and Colored
Timed Petri nets (CTPN). The unification has been achieved; to
support the design and construction of hierarchical and distributed
machine control which realized the concurrent operation of reusable
and distributed machine control components; ability to handle
growing complexity; and support requirements for real- time control
systems. Thus MIMCA enables mapping between 'what a machine
should do' and 'how the machine does it' in a well-defined but
flexible way designed to facilitate reconfiguration of machine
systems.
Abstract: In the control theory one attempts to find a controller
that provides the best possible performance with respect to some
given measures of performance. There are many sorts of controllers
e.g. a typical PID controller, LQR controller, Fuzzy controller etc. In
the paper will be introduced polynomial controller with novel tuning
method which is based on the special pole placement encoding
scheme and optimization by Genetic Algorithms (GA). The examples
will show the performance of the novel designed polynomial
controller with comparison to common PID controller.
