Abstract: Mechanical buckling analysis of rectangular plates
with central circular cutout is performed in this paper. The finiteelement
method is used to study the effects of plate-support
conditions, aspect ratio, and hole size on the mechanical buckling
strength of the perforated plates subjected to linearly varying loading.
Results show that increasing the hole size does not necessarily reduce
the mechanical buckling strength of the perforated plates. It is also
concluded that the clamped boundary condition increases the
mechanical buckling strength of the perforated plates more than the
simply-supported boundary condition and the free boundary
conditions enhance the mechanical buckling strength of the
perforated plates more effectively than the fixed boundary conditions.
Furthermore, for the bending cases, the critical buckling load of
perforated plates with free edges is less than perforated plates with
fixed edges.
Abstract: Surface roughness (Ra) is one of the most important requirements in machining process. In order to obtain better surface roughness, the proper setting of cutting parameters is crucial before the process take place. This research presents the development of mathematical model for surface roughness prediction before milling process in order to evaluate the fitness of machining parameters; spindle speed, feed rate and depth of cut. 84 samples were run in this study by using FANUC CNC Milling α-Τ14ιE. Those samples were randomly divided into two data sets- the training sets (m=60) and testing sets(m=24). ANOVA analysis showed that at least one of the population regression coefficients was not zero. Multiple Regression Method was used to determine the correlation between a criterion variable and a combination of predictor variables. It was established that the surface roughness is most influenced by the feed rate. By using Multiple Regression Method equation, the average percentage deviation of the testing set was 9.8% and 9.7% for training data set. This showed that the statistical model could predict the surface roughness with about 90.2% accuracy of the testing data set and 90.3% accuracy of the training data set.
Abstract: The present paper deals with the experimental and
computational study of axial collapse of the aluminum metallic shells
having combined tube-frusta geometry between two parallel plates.
Shells were having bottom two third lengths as frusta and remaining
top one third lengths as tube. Shells were compressed to recognize
their modes of collapse and associated energy absorption capability.
An axisymmetric Finite Element computational model of collapse
process is presented and analysed, using a non-linear FE code
FORGE2. Six noded isoparametric triangular elements were used to
discretize the deforming shell. The material of the shells was
idealized as rigid visco-plastic. To validate the computational model
experimental and computed results of the deformed shapes and their
corresponding load-compression and energy-compression curves
were compared. With the help of the obtained results progress of the
axisymmetric mode of collapse has been presented, analysed and
discussed.
Abstract: The paper deals with the kinematics and automated
calculation of intermittent mechanisms with radial cams. Currently,
electronic cams are increasingly applied in the drives of working link
mechanisms. Despite a huge advantage of electronic cams in their reprogrammability
or instantaneous change of displacement diagrams,
conventional cam mechanisms have an irreplaceable role in
production and handling machines. With high frequency of working
cycle periods, the dynamic load of the proper servomotor rotor
increases and efficiency of electronic cams strongly decreases.
Though conventional intermittent mechanisms with radial cams are
representatives of fixed automation, they have distinct advantages in
their high speed (high dynamics), positional accuracy and relatively
easy manufacture. We try to remove the disadvantage of firm
displacement diagram by reducing costs for simple design and
automated calculation that leads reliably to high-quality and
inexpensive manufacture.
Abstract: In this paper, we propose the pre-processor based on
the Evidence Supporting Measure of Similarity (ESMS) filter and also
propose the unified fusion approach (UFA) based on the general
fusion machine coupled with ESMS filter, which improve the
correctness and precision of information fusion in any fields of
application. Here we mainly apply the new approach to Simultaneous
Localization And Mapping (SLAM) of Pioneer II mobile robots. A
simulation experiment was performed, where an autonomous virtual
mobile robot with sonar sensors evolves in a virtual world map with
obstacles. By comparing the result of building map according to the
general fusion machine (here DSmT-based fusing machine and
PCR5-based conflict redistributor considereded) coupling with ESMS
filter and without ESMS filter, it shows the benefit of the selection of
the sources as a prerequisite for improvement of the information
fusion, and also testifies the superiority of the UFA in dealing with
SLAM.
Abstract: In the present study, Convective heat transfer
coefficient and pressure drop of Al2O3/water nanofluid in laminar
flow regime under constant heat flux conditions inside a circular tube
were experimentally investigated. Al2O3/water nanofluid with 0.5%
and 1% volume concentrations with 15 nm diameter nanoparticles
were used as working fluid. The effect of different volume
concentrations on convective heat transfer coefficient and friction
factor was studied. The results emphasize that increasing of particle
volume concentration leads to enhance convective heat transfer
coefficient. Measurements show the average heat transfer coefficient
enhanced about 11-20% with 0.5% volume concentration and
increased about 16-27% with 1% volume concentration compared to
distilled water. In addition, the convective heat transfer coefficient of
nanofluid enhances with increase in heat flux. From the results, the
average ratio of (fnf/fbf) was about 1.10 for 0.5% volume
concentration. Therefore, there is no significant increase in friction
factor for nanofluids.
Abstract: Double-diffusive steady convection in a partially
porous cavity with partially permeable walls and under the combined
buoyancy effects of thermal and mass diffusion was analysed
numerically using finite volume method.
The top wall is well insulated and impermeable while the bottom
surface is partially well insulated and impermeable and partially
submitted to constant temperature T1 and concentration C1. Constant
equal temperature T2 and concentration C2 are imposed along the
vertical surfaces of the enclosure. Mass suction/injection and
injection/suction are respectively considered at the bottom of the
porous centred partition and at one of the vertical walls.
Heat and mass transfer characteristics as streamlines and average
Nusselt numbers and Sherwood numbers were discussed for different
values of buoyancy ratio, Rayleigh number, and injection/suction
coefficient.
It is especially noted that increasing the injection factor
disadvantages the exchanges in the case of the injection while the
transfer is augmented in case of suction. On the other hand, a critical
value of the buoyancy ratio was highlighted for which heat and mass
transfers are minimized.
Abstract: Design and evaluation of reciprocating compressors
should include a pulsation study. The object is to ensure that
predicted pulsation levels meet guidelines to limit vibration, shaking
forces, noise, associated pressure drops, horsepower losses and
fabrication cost and time to acceptable levels. This paper explains
procedures and recommendations to select and size pulsation
suppression devices to obtain optimum arrangement in terms of
pulsation, vibration, shaking forces, performance, reliability, safety,
operation, maintenance and commercial conditions. Model and
advanced formulations for pulsation study are presented. The effect
of the full fluid dynamic model on the prediction of pulsation waves
and resulting frequency spectrum distributions are discussed.
Advanced and optimum methods of controlling pulsations are
highlighted. Useful recommendations and guidelines for pulsation
control, piping pulsation analysis, pulsation vessel design, shaking
forces, low pressure drop orifices, pulsation study report and devices
to mitigate pulsation and shaking problems are discussed.
Abstract: Understanding of how and where NOx formation
occurs in industrial burner is very important for efficient and clean
operation of utility burners. Also the importance of this problem is
mainly due to its relation to the pollutants produced by more burners
used widely of gas turbine in thermal power plants and glass and steel
industry.
In this article, a numerical model of an industrial burner operating
in MILD combustion is validated with experimental data.. Then
influence of air flow rate and air temperature on combustor
temperature profiles and NOX product are investigated. In order to
modification this study reports on the effects of fuel and air dilution
(with inert gases H2O, CO2, N2), and also influence of lean-premixed
of fuel, on the temperature profiles and NOX emission.
Conservation equations of mass, momentum and energy, and
transport equations of species concentrations, turbulence, combustion
and radiation modeling in addition to NO modeling equations were
solved together to present temperature and NO distribution inside the
burner.
The results shows that dilution, cause to a reduction in value of
temperature and NOX emission, and suppresses any flame
propagation inside the furnace and made the flame inside the furnace
invisible. Dilution with H2O rather than N2 and CO2 decreases further
the value of the NOX. Also with raise of lean-premix level, local
temperature of burner and the value of NOX product are decreases
because of premixing prevents local “hot spots" within the combustor
volume that can lead to significant NOx formation. Also leanpremixing
of fuel with air cause to amount of air in reaction zone is
reach more than amount that supplied as is actually needed to burn
the fuel and this act lead to limiting NOx formation
Abstract: This analysis investigates the distortion of flow
measurement and the increase of cavitation along orifice
flowmeter. The analysis using the numerical method (CFD)
validated the distortion of flow measurement through the inlet
velocity profile considering the convergence and grid
dependency. Realizable k-e model was selected and y+ was
about 50 in this numerical analysis. This analysis also estimated
the vulnerability of cavitation effect due to inlet velocity profile.
The investigation concludes that inclined inlet velocity profile
could vary the pressure which was measured at pressure tab
near pipe wall and it led to distort the pressure values ranged
from -3.8% to 5.3% near the orifice plate and to make the
increase of cavitation. The investigation recommends that the
fully developed inlet velocity flow is beneficial to accurate flow
measurement in orifice flowmeter.
Abstract: Experimental investigation has been carried out
towards understanding the complex fluid dynamics involved in the
interaction of vortical structures with zero pressure gradient boundary
layer. A laminar boundary layer is produced on the flat plate placed
in the water flume and the synthetic jet actuator is deployed on top of
the plate at a definite distance from the leading edge. The synthetic
jet actuator has been designed in such a way that the to and fro
motion of the diaphragm is maneuvered at will by varying the
operating parameters to produce the typical streamwise vortical
structures namely hairpin and tilted vortices. PIV measurements are
made on the streamwise plane normal to the plate to evaluate their
interaction with the near wall fluid.
Abstract: In this study, a 3D combustion chamber was simulated
using FLUENT 6.32. Aims to obtain accurate information about the
profile of the combustion in the furnace and also check the effect of
oxygen enrichment on the combustion process. Oxygen enrichment is
an effective way to reduce combustion pollutant. The flow rate of air
to fuel ratio is varied as 1.3, 3.2 and 5.1 and the oxygen enriched
flow rates are 28, 54 and 68 lit/min. Combustion simulations
typically involve the solution of the turbulent flows with heat
transfer, species transport and chemical reactions. It is common to
use the Reynolds-averaged form of the governing equation in
conjunction with a suitable turbulence model. The 3D Reynolds
Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) equations with standard k-ε
turbulence model are solved together by Fluent 6.3 software. First
order upwind scheme is used to model governing equations and the
SIMPLE algorithm is used as pressure velocity coupling. Species
mass fractions at the wall are assumed to have zero normal
gradients.Results show that minimum mole fraction of CO2 happens
when the flow rate ratio of air to fuel is 5.1. Additionally, in a fixed
oxygen enrichment condition, increasing the air to fuel ratio will
increase the temperature peak. As a result, oxygen-enrichment can
reduce the CO2 emission at this kind of furnace in high air to fuel
rates.
Abstract: This study comprehensively simulate the use of k-ε
model for predicting flow and heat transfer with measured flow field
data in a stationary duct with elucidates on the detailed physics
encountered in the fully developed flow region, and the sharp 180°
bend region. Among the major flow features predicted with accuracy
are flow transition at the entrance of the duct, the distribution of
mean and turbulent quantities in the developing, fully developed, and
sharp 180° bend, the development of secondary flows in the duct
cross-section and the sharp 180° bend, and heat transfer
augmentation. Turbulence intensities in the sharp 180° bend are
found to reach high values and local heat transfer comparisons show
that the heat transfer augmentation shifts towards the wall and along
the duct. Therefore, understanding of the unsteady heat transfer in
sharp 180° bends is important. The design and simulation are related
to concept of fluid mechanics, heat transfer and thermodynamics.

Abstract: As a part of the development of a numerical method of
close capture exhausts systems for machining devices, a test rig
recreating a situation similar to a grinding operation, but in a
perfectly controlled environment, is used. The properties of the
obtained spray of solid particles are initially characterized using
particle tracking velocimetry (PTV), in order to obtain input and
validation parameters for numerical simulations. The dispersion of a
tracer gas (SF6) emitted simultaneously with the particle jet is then
studied experimentally, as the dispersion of such a gas is
representative of that of finer particles, whose aerodynamic response
time is negligible. Finally, complete modeling of the test rig is
achieved to allow comparison with experimental results and thus to
progress towards validation of the models used to describe a twophase
flow generated by machining operation.
Abstract: The data measurement of mean velocity has been
taken for the wake of single circular cylinder with three different diameters for two different velocities. The effects of change in
diameter and in velocity are studied in self-similar coordinate system.
The spatial variations of velocity defect and that of the half-width
have been investigated. The results are compared with those
published by H.Schlichting. In the normalized coordinates, it is also observed that all cases except for the first station are self-similar. By attention to self-similarity profiles of mean velocity, it is observed for all the cases at the each station curves tend to zero at a same point.
Abstract: The study of effect of laser scanning speed on
material efficiency in Ti6Al4V application is very important because unspent powder is not reusable because of high temperature oxygen
pick-up and contamination. This study carried out an extensive study
on the effect of scanning speed on material efficiency by varying the
speed between 0.01 to 0.1m/sec. The samples are wire brushed and
cleaned with acetone after each deposition to remove un-melted
particles from the surface of the deposit. The substrate is weighed before and after deposition. A formula was developed to calculate the
material efficiency and the scanning speed was compared with the
powder efficiency obtained. The results are presented and discussed.
The study revealed that the optimum scanning speed exists for this study at 0.01m/sec, above and below which the powder efficiency
will drop
Abstract: Transesterified vegetable oils (biodiesel) are promising alternative fuel for diesel engines. Used vegetable oils are disposed from restaurants in large quantities. But higher viscosity restricts their direct use in diesel engines. In this study, used cooking oil was dehydrated and then transesterified using an alkaline catalyst. The combustion, performance and emission characteristics of Used Cooking oil Methyl Ester (UCME) and its blends with diesel oil are analysed in a direct injection C.I. engine. The fuel properties and the combustion characteristics of UCME are found to be similar to those of diesel. A minor decrease in thermal efficiency with significant improvement in reduction of particulates, carbon monoxide and unburnt hydrocarbons is observed compared to diesel. The use of transesterified used cooking oil and its blends as fuel for diesel engines will reduce dependence on fossil fuels and also decrease considerably the environmental pollution.
Abstract: Bendability is constrained by maximum top roller
load imparting capacity of the machine. Maximum load is
encountered during the edge pre-bending stage of roller bending.
Capacity of 3-roller plate bending machine is specified by
maximum thickness and minimum shell diameter combinations that
can be pre-bend for given plate material of maximum width.
Commercially available plate width or width of the plate that can be
accommodated on machine decides the maximum rolling width.
Original equipment manufacturers (OEM) provide the machine
capacity chart based on reference material considering perfectly
plastic material model. Reported work shows the bendability analysis
of heavy duty 3-roller plate bending machine. The input variables for
the industry are plate thickness, shell diameter and material property
parameters, as it is fixed by the design. Analytical models of
equivalent thickness, equivalent width and maximum width based on
power law material model were derived to study the bendability.
Equation of maximum width provides bendability for designed
configuration i.e. material property, shell diameter and thickness
combinations within the machine limitations. Equivalent thicknesses
based on perfectly plastic and power law material model were
compared for four different materials grades of C-Mn steel in order
to predict the bend-ability. Effect of top roller offset on the
bendability at maximum top roller load imparting capacity is
reported.
Abstract: The main aim of this work is to establish the
capabilities of new green buildings to ascertain off-grid electricity
generation based on the integration of wind turbines in the
conceptual model of a rotating tower [2] in Dubai. An in depth
performance analysis of the WinWind 3.0MW [3] wind turbine is
performed. Data based on the Dubai Meteorological Services is
collected and analyzed in conjunction with the performance analysis
of this wind turbine. The mathematical model is compared with
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) results based on a conceptual
rotating tower design model. The comparison results are further
validated and verified for accuracy by conducting experiments on a
scaled prototype of the tower design. The study concluded that
integrating wind turbines inside a rotating tower can generate enough
electricity to meet the required power consumption of the building,
which equates to a wind farm containing 9 horizontal axis wind
turbines located at an approximate area of 3,237,485 m2 [14].
Abstract: Heat pipes are used to control the thermal problem for
electronic cooling. It is especially difficult to dissipate heat to a heat
sink in an environment in space compared to earth. For solving this
problem, in this study, the Poiseuille (Po) number, which is the main
measure of the performance of a heat pipe, is studied by CFD; then, the
heat pipe performance is verified with experimental results. A heat
pipe is then fabricated for a spatial environment, and an in-house code
is developed. Further, a heat pipe subsystem, which consists of a heat
pipe, MLI (Multi Layer Insulator), SSM (Second Surface Mirror), and
radiator, is tested and correlated with the TMM (Thermal
Mathematical Model) through a commercial code. The correlation
results satisfy the 3K requirement, and the generated thermal model is
verified for application to a spatial environment.
