Abstract: Fuzzy logic system (FLS) is used in this study to
predict the tractive performance in terms of traction force, and
motion resistance for an intelligent air cushion track vehicle while it
operates in the swamp peat. The system is effective to control the
intelligent air –cushion system with measuring the vehicle traction
force (TF), motion resistance (MR), cushion clearance height (CH)
and cushion pressure (CP). Ultrasonic displacement sensor, pull-in
solenoid electromagnetic switch, pressure control sensor, micro
controller, and battery pH sensor are incorporated with the Fuzzy
logic system to investigate experimentally the TF, MR, CH, and CP.
In this study, a comparison for tractive performance of an intelligent
air cushion track vehicle has been performed with the results obtained
from the predicted values of FLS and experimental actual values. The
mean relative error of actual and predicted values from the FLS
model on traction force, and total motion resistance are found as 5.58
%, and 6.78 % respectively. For all parameters, the relative error of
predicted values are found to be less than the acceptable limits. The
goodness of fit of the prediction values from the FLS model on TF,
and MR are found as 0.90, and 0.98 respectively.
Abstract: The steady incompressible flow has been solved in cylindrical coordinates in both vapour region and wick structure. The governing equations in vapour region are continuity, Navier-Stokes and energy equations. These equations have been solved using SIMPLE algorithm. For study of parameters variation on heat pipe operation, a benchmark has been chosen and the effect of changing one parameter has been analyzed when the others have been fixed.
Abstract: This paper uses quasi-steady molecular statics model
and diamond tool to carry out simulation temperature rise of nanoscale
orthogonal cutting single-crystal silicon. It further qualitatively
analyzes temperature field of silicon workpiece without considering
heat transfer and considering heat transfer. This paper supposes that
the temperature rise of workpiece is mainly caused by two heat sources:
plastic deformation heat and friction heat. Then, this paper develops a
theoretical model about production of the plastic deformation heat and
friction heat during nanoscale orthogonal cutting. After the increased
temperature produced by these two heat sources are added up, the
acquired total temperature rise at each atom of the workpiece is
substituted in heat transfer finite difference equation to carry out heat
transfer and calculates the temperature field in each step and makes
related analysis.
Abstract: The objective of present work is to stimulate the
machining of material by electrical discharge machining (EDM) to
give effect of input parameters like discharge current (Ip), pulse on
time (Ton), pulse off time (Toff) which can bring about changes in the
output parameter, i.e. material removal rate. Experimental data was
gathered from die sinking EDM process using copper electrode and
Medium Carbon Steel (AISI 1040) as work-piece. The rules of
membership function (MF) and the degree of closeness to the
optimum value of the MMR are within the upper and lower range of
the process parameters. It was found that proposed fuzzy model is in
close agreement with the experimental results. By Intelligent, model
based design and control of EDM process parameters in this study
will help to enable dramatically decreased product and process
development cycle times.
Abstract: The geometric errors in the manufacturing process can
be reduced by optimal positioning of the fixture elements in the
fixture to make the workpiece stiff. We propose a new fixture layout
optimization method N-3-2-1 for large metal sheets in this paper that
combines the genetic algorithm and finite element analysis. The
objective function in this method is to minimize the sum of the nodal
deflection normal to the surface of the workpiece. Two different
kinds of case studies are presented, and optimal position of the
fixturing element is obtained for different cases.
Abstract: The limit load carrying capacity of functionally
graded materials (FGM) circular plates subjected to an arbitrary
rotationally symmetric loading has been computed. It is provided that
the plate material behaves rigid perfectly plastic and obeys either the
Square or the Tresca yield criterion. To this end the upper and lower
bound principles of limit analysis are employed to determine the
exact value for the limiting load. The correctness of the result are
verified and finally limiting loads for two examples namely; through
radius and through thickness FGM circular plates with simply
supported edges are calculated, respectively and moreover, the values
of critical loading factor are determined.
Abstract: The voltage/current characteristics and the effect of
NO2 gas on the electrical conductivity of a PbPc gas sensor array is
investigated. The gas sensor is manufactured using vacuum
deposition of gold electrodes on sapphire substrate with the leadphathalocyanine
vacuum sublimed on the top of the gold electrodes.
Two versions of the PbPc gas sensor array are investigated. The
tested types differ in the gap sizes between the deposited gold
electrodes. The sensors are tested at different temperatures to account
for conductivity changes as the molecular adsorption/desorption rate
is affected by heat. The obtained results found to be encouraging as
the sensors shoed stability and sensitivity towards low concentration
of applied NO2 gas.
Abstract: Fatigue tests of specimen-s with numerous holes are
presented. The tests were made up till fatigue cracks have been
created on both sides of the hole. Their extension was stopping with
pressed plastic deformation at the mouth of the detected crack. It is
shown that the moments of occurrence of cracks on holes are
stochastically dependent. This dependence has positive and negative
correlation relations. Shown that the positive correlation is formed
across of the applied force, while negative one – along it. The
negative relationship extends over a greater distance. The
mathematical model of dependence area formation is represented as
well as the estimating of model parameters. The positive correlation
of fatigue cracks origination can be considered as an extension of one
main crack. With negative correlation the first crack locates the place
of its origin, leading to the appearance of multiple cracks; do not
merge with each other.
Abstract: The knowledge of the nature of loading is very
important in order to hold account on the total behavior such as
vibration, shock, fatigue, etc. Fatigue present 90% of failure when
loadings fatigues are very complex. In this paper a study of double
through crack at hole for plate subjected to fatigue loading is
presented. Various modes loading are studied where the applied load
is the same one. The fatigue life is given where the effect of stress
ratio is highlighted. This work is conducted on aluminum alloy 2024
T351 used for much aerospace and aeronautics applications. The
fatigue crack growth behavior with constant amplitude is studied
using the AFGROW code when Forman model is applied. The
fatigue crack growth rate and fatigue life for different loading modes
are compared with variation of others geometrical parameter such as
thickness and dimensions of notch hole.
Abstract: The control of sprayer boom undesired vibrations pose a great challenge to investigators due to various disturbances and conditions. Sprayer boom movements lead to reduce of spread efficiency and crop yield. This paper describes the design of a novel control method for an active suspension system applying proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller with an active force control (AFC) scheme integration of an iterative learning algorithm employed to a sprayer boom. The iterative learning as an intelligent method is principally used as a method to calculate the best value of the estimated inertia of the sprayer boom needed for the AFC loop. Results show that the proposed AFC-based scheme performs much better than the standard PID control technique. Also, this shows that the system is more robust and accurate.
Abstract: Dielectric sheet perturbation to the dominant TE111
mode resonant frequency of a circular cavity is studied and presented
in this paper. The dielectric sheet, placed at the middle of the airfilled
cavity, introduces discontinuities and disturbs the configuration
of electromagnetic fields in the cavity. For fixed dimensions of cavity
and fixed thickness of the loading dielectric, the dominant resonant
frequency varies quite linearly with the permittivity of the dielectric.
This quasi-linear relationship is plotted using Maple software and
verified using 3D electromagnetic simulations. Two probes are used
in the simulation for wave excitation into and from the cavity. The
best length of probe is found to be 3 mm, giving the closest resonant
frequency to the one calculated using Maple. A total of fourteen
different dielectrics of permittivity ranging from 1 to 12.9 are tested
one by one in the simulation. The works show very close agreement
between the results from Maple and the simulation. A constant
difference of 0.04 GHz is found between the resonant frequencies
collected during simulation and the ones from Maple. The success of
this project may lead to the possibility of using the middle loaded
cavity at TE111 mode as a microwave non-destructive testing of solid
materials.
Abstract: In this work, we examine fluid mixing in a full three-stream mixing channel with longitudinal vortex generators (LVGs) built on the channel bottom by numerical simulation and experiment. The effects of the asymmetrical arrangement and the attack angle of the LVGs on fluid mixing are investigated. The results show that the micromixer with LVGs at a small asymmetry index (defined by the ratio of the distance from the center plane of the gap between the winglets to the center plane of the main channel to the width of the main channel) is superior to the micromixer with symmetric LVGs and that with LVGs at a large asymmetry index. The micromixer using five mixing modules of the LVGs with an attack angle between 16.5 degrees and 22.5 degrees can achieve excellent mixing over a wide range of Reynolds numbers. Here, we call a section of channel with two pairs of staggered asymmetrical LVGs a mixing module. Besides, the micromixer with LVGs at a small attack angle is more efficient than that with a larger attack angle when pressure losses are taken into account.
Abstract: CFD simulations are carried out in arterial stenoses
with 48 % areal occlusion. Non-newtonian fluid model is selected for
the blood flow as the same problem has been solved before with
Newtonian fluid model. Studies on flow resistance with the presence
of surface irregularities are carried out. Investigations are also
performed on the pressure drop at various Reynolds numbers. The
present study revealed that the pressure drop across a stenosed artery
is practically unaffected by surface irregularities at low Reynolds
numbers, while flow features are observed and discussed at higher
Reynolds numbers.
Abstract: An adaptive Helmholtz resonator was designed and
adapted to hydraulics. The resonator was controlled by open- and
closed-loop controls so that 20 dB attenuation of the peak-to-peak
value of the pulsating pressure was maintained. The closed-loop
control was noted to be better, albeit it was slower because of its low
pressure and temperature variation, which caused variation in the
effective bulk modulus of the hydraulic system. Low-pressure
hydraulics contains air, which affects the stiffness of the hydraulics,
and temperature variation changes the viscosity of the oil. Thus, an
open-loop control loses its efficiency if a condition such as
temperature or the amount of air changes after calibration. The
instability of the low-pressure hydraulic system reduced the
operational frequency range of the Helmholtz resonator when
compared with the results of an analytical model.
Different dampers for hydraulics are presented. Then analytical
models of a hydraulic pipe and a hydraulic pipe with a Helmholtz
resonator are presented. The analytical models are based on the wave
equation of sound pressure. Finally, control methods and the results
of experiments are presented.
Abstract: The present study conducted experimental investigation on combustion and emission characteristics of compression ignition engine using diesel as pilot fuel and methane, hydrogen and methane/hydrogen mixture as gaseous fuels at 1800 rev min-1. The effect of gaseous fuel on peak cylinder pressure and heat release is modest at low to medium loads. At high load, the high combustion temperature and high quantity of pilot fuel contribute to better combustion efficiency for all kinds of gaseous fuels and increases the peak cylinder pressure. Enrichment of hydrogen in methane gradually increases the peak cylinder pressure. The brake thermal efficiency increases with higher hydrogen fraction at lower loads. Hydrogen addition in methane contributed to a proportional reduction of CO/CO2/HC emission without penalty of NOx. For particulate emission, methane and hydrogen, could both suppress the particle emission. 30% hydrogen fraction in methane is observed to be best in reducing the particulate emission.
Abstract: In this study, we developed a model to predict the
temperature and the pressure variation in an internal combustion
engine operated in HCCI (Homogeneous charge compression ignition)
mode. HCCI operation begins from aspirating of homogeneous charge
mixture through intake valve like SI (Spark ignition) engine and the
premixed charge is compressed until temperature and pressure of
mixture reach autoignition point like diesel engine. Combustion phase
was described by double-Wiebe function. The single zone model
coupled with an double-Wiebe function were performed to simulated
pressure and temperature between the period of IVC (Inlet valve close)
and EVO (Exhaust valve open). Mixture gas properties were
implemented using STANJAN and transfer the results to main model.
The model has considered the engine geometry and enables varying in
fuelling, equivalence ratio, manifold temperature and pressure. The
results were compared with the experiment and showed good
correlation with respect to combustion phasing, pressure rise, peak
pressure and temperature. This model could be adapted and use to
control start of combustion for HCCI engine.
Abstract: Impinging jets are widely used in industrial cooling
systems for their high heat transfer characteristics at stagnation points.
However, the heat transfer characteristics are low in the downstream
direction. In order to improve the heat transfer coefficient further
downstream, investigations introducing ribs on jet-cooled flat plates
have been conducted. Most studies regarding the heat-transfer
enhancement using a rib-roughened wall have dealt with the rib pitch.
In this paper, we focused on the rib spacing and demonstrated that the
rib spacing must be more than 6 times the nozzle width to improve heat
transfer at Reynolds number Re=5.0×103 because it is necessary to
have enough space to allow reattachment of flow behind the first rib.
Abstract: This paper investigates experimental and numerical study of the airflow characteristics for vortex, round and square ceiling diffusers and its effect on the thermal comfort in a ventilated room. Three different thermal comfort criteria namely; Mean Age of the Air (MAA), ventilation effectiveness (E), and Effective Draft Temperature (EDT) have been used to predict the thermal comfort zone inside the room. In experimental work, a sub-scale room is set-up to measure the temperature field in the room. In numerical analysis, unstructured grids have been used to discretize the numerical domain. Conservation equations are solved using FLUENT commercial flow solver. The code is validated by comparing the numerical results obtained from three different turbulence models with the available experimental data. The comparison between the various numerical models shows that the standard k-ε turbulence model can be used to simulate these cases successfully. After validation of the code, effect of supply air velocity on the flow and thermal field could be investigated and hence the thermal comfort. The results show that the pressure coefficient created by the square diffuser is 1.5 times greater than that created by the vortex diffuser. The velocity decay coefficient is nearly the same for square and round diffusers and is 2.6 times greater than that for the vortex diffuser.
Abstract: The state of melt viscosity in injection process is significantly influenced by the setting parameters due to that the shear rate of injection process is higher than other processes. How to determine plastic melt viscosity during injection process is important to understand the influence of setting parameters on the melt viscosity. An apparatus named as pressure sensor bushing (PSB) module that is used to evaluate the melt viscosity during injection process is developed in this work. The formulations to coupling melt viscosity with fill time and injection pressure are derived and then the melt viscosity is determined. A test mold is prepared to evaluate the accuracy on viscosity calculations between the PSB module and the conventional approaches. The influence of melt viscosity on the tensile strength of molded part is proposed to study the consistency of injection quality.
Abstract: This study reports an empirical investigation of
fatigue crack initiation and propagation in 2024 T351 aluminium
alloy using constant amplitude loading. In initiation stage, local
strain approach at the notch was used and in stable propagation stage
NASGRO model was applied.
In this investigation, the flat plate of double through crack at hole
is used. Based on experimental results (AFGROW Database), effect
of stress ratio, R, is highlights on fatigue initiation life (FIL) and
fatigue crack growth rate (FCGR). The increasing of dimension of
hole characterizing the notch effect decrease the fatigue life.
