Abstract: Folic acid (FA) is known to be an important
supplement to prevent neural tube defect (NTD) in pregnant women.
Similar to some commercial formulations, sodium bicarbonate
solution is used as a solvent for FA. This work uses the antisolvent
vapour precipitation (AVP), incorporating ethanol vapour as the
convective drying medium in place of air to produce branch-like
micro-structure FA particles. Interestingly, the dissolution rate of the
resultant particle is 2-3 times better than the particle produce from
conventional air drying due to the higher surface area of particles
produced. The higher dissolution rate could possibly improve the
delivery and absorption of FA in human body. This application could
potentially be extended to other commercial products, particularly in
less soluble drugs to improve its solubility.
Abstract: In this paper, an edge-strength guided multiscale
retinex (EGMSR) approach will be proposed for color image contrast
enhancement. In EGMSR, the pixel-dependent weight associated with
each pixel in the single scale retinex output image is computed
according to the edge strength around this pixel in order to prevent
from over-enhancing the noises contained in the smooth dark/bright
regions. Further, by fusing together the enhanced results of EGMSR
and adaptive multiscale retinex (AMSR), we can get a natural fused
image having high contrast and proper tonal rendition. Experimental
results on several low-contrast images have shown that our proposed
approach can produce natural and appealing enhanced images.
Abstract: Consumer-to-Consumer (C2C) E-commerce has been
growing at a very high speed in recent years. Since identical or
nearly-same kinds of products compete one another by relying on
keyword search in C2C E-commerce, some sellers describe their
products with spam keywords that are popular but are not related to
their products. Though such products get more chances to be retrieved
and selected by consumers than those without spam keywords,
the spam keywords mislead the consumers and waste their time.
This problem has been reported in many commercial services like
ebay and taobao, but there have been little research to solve this
problem. As a solution to this problem, this paper proposes a method
to classify whether keywords of a product are spam or not. The
proposed method assumes that a keyword for a given product is
more reliable if the keyword is observed commonly in specifications
of products which are the same or the same kind as the given
product. This is because that a hierarchical category of a product
in general determined precisely by a seller of the product and so is
the specification of the product. Since higher layers of the hierarchical
category represent more general kinds of products, a reliable degree
is differently determined according to the layers. Hence, reliable
degrees from different layers of a hierarchical category become
features for keywords and they are used together with features only
from specifications for classification of the keywords. Support Vector
Machines are adopted as a basic classifier using the features, since
it is powerful, and widely used in many classification tasks. In
the experiments, the proposed method is evaluated with a golden
standard dataset from Yi-han-wang, a Chinese C2C E-commerce,
and is compared with a baseline method that does not consider
the hierarchical category. The experimental results show that the
proposed method outperforms the baseline in F1-measure, which
proves that spam keywords are effectively identified by a hierarchical
category in C2C E-commerce.
Abstract: This paper presents the variation of the dynamic
characteristics of a spindle with the change of bearing preload. The
correlations between the variation of bearing preload and fundamental
modal parameters were first examined by conducting vibration tests on
physical spindle units. Experimental measurements show that the
dynamic compliance and damping ratio associated with the
dominating modes were affected to vary with variation of the bearing
preload. When the bearing preload was slightly deviated from a
standard value, the modal frequency and damping ability also vary to
different extent, which further enable the spindle to perform with
different compliance. For the spindle used in this study, a standard
preload value set on bearings would enable the spindle to behave a
higher stiffness as compared with others with a preload variation. This
characteristic can be served as a reference to examine the variation of
bearing preload of spindle in assemblage or operation.

Abstract: When it comes to last, it is regarded as the critical foundation of shoe design and development. Not only the last relates to the comfort of shoes wearing but also it aids the production of shoe styling and manufacturing. In order to enhance the efficiency and application of last development, a computer aided methodology for customized last form designs is proposed in this study. The reverse engineering is mainly applied to the process of scanning for the last form. Then the minimum energy is used for the revision of surface continuity, the surface of the last is reconstructed with the feature curves of the scanned last. When the surface of a last is reconstructed, based on the foundation of the proposed last form reconstruction module, the weighted arithmetic mean method is applied to the calculation on the shape morphing which differs from the grading for the control mesh of last, and the algorithm of subdivision is used to create the surface of last mesh, thus the feet-fitting 3D last form of different sizes is generated from its original form feature with functions remained. Finally, the practicability of the proposed methodology is verified through later case studies.
Abstract: In the past, the most comprehensively adopted light
source was incandescent light bulbs, but with the appearance of LED
light sources, traditional light sources have been gradually replaced by
LEDs because of its numerous superior characteristics. However,
many of the standards do not apply to LEDs as the two light sources
are characterized differently. This also intensifies the significance of
studies on LEDs. As a Kansei design study investigating the visual
glare produced by traffic arrows implemented with LEDs, this study
conducted a semantic analysis on the styles of traffic arrows used in
domestic and international occasions. The results will be able to
reduce drivers’ misrecognition that results in the unsuccessful arrival
at the destination, or in traffic accidents. This study started with a
literature review and surveyed the status quo before conducting
experiments that were divided in two parts. The first part involved a
screening experiment of arrow samples, where cluster analysis was
conducted to choose five representative samples of LED displays. The
second part was a semantic experiment on the display of arrows using
LEDs, where the five representative samples and the selected ten
adjectives were incorporated. Analyzing the results with
Quantification Theory Type I, it was found that among the
composition of arrows, fletching was the most significant factor that
influenced the adjectives. In contrast, a “no fletching” design was
more abstract and vague. It lacked the ability to convey the intended
message and might bear psychological negative connotation including
“dangerous,” “forbidden,” and “unreliable.” The arrow design
consisting of “> shaped fletching” was found to be more concrete and
definite, showing positive connotation including “safe,” “cautious,”
and “reliable.” When a stimulus was placed at a farther distance, the
glare could be significantly reduced; moreover, the visual evaluation
scores would be higher. On the contrary, if the fletching and the shaft
had a similar proportion, looking at the stimuli caused higher
evaluation at a closer distance. The above results will be able to be
applied to the design of traffic arrows by conveying information
definitely and rapidly. In addition, drivers’ safety could be enhanced
by understanding the cause of glare and improving visual
recognizability.
Abstract: Microwave dielectric ceramic materials of
(Mg1-xNix)2(Ti0.95Sn0.05)O4 for x = 0.01, 0.03, 0.05, 0.07 and 0.09 were
prepared and sintered at 1250–1400 ºC. The microstructure and
microwave dielectric properties of the ceramic materials were
examined and measured. The observations shows that the content of
Ni2+ ions has little effect on the crystal structure, dielectric constant,
temperature coefficient of resonant frequency (τf) and sintering
temperatures of the ceramics. However, the quality values (Q×f) are
greatly improved due to the addition of Ni2+ ions. The present study
showed that the ceramic material prepared for x = 0.05 and sintered at
1325ºC had the best Q×f value of 392,000 GHz, about 23%
improvement compared with that of Mg2(Ti0.95Sn0.05)O4.
Abstract: This study applies the inverse method and three- dimensional CFD commercial software in conjunction with the experimental temperature data to investigate the heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics of the plate-fin heat sink in a closed rectangular enclosure for various values of fin height. The inverse method with the finite difference method and the experimental temperature data is applied to determine the heat transfer coefficient. The k-ε turbulence model is used to obtain the heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics within the fins. To validate the accuracy of the results obtained, the comparison of the average heat transfer coefficient is made. The calculated temperature at selected measurement locations on the plate-fin is also compared with experimental data.
Abstract: This paper investigates the natural convection heat transfer performance in a complex-wavy-wall cavity filled with power-law fluid. In performing the simulations, the continuity, Cauchy momentum and energy equations are solved subject to the Boussinesq approximation using a finite volume method. The simulations focus specifically on the effects of the flow behavior index in the power-law model and the Rayleigh number on the flow streamlines, isothermal contours and mean Nusselt number within the cavity. The results show that pseudoplastic fluids have a better heat transfer performance than Newtonian or dilatant fluids. Moreover, it is shown that for Rayleigh numbers greater than Ra=103, the mean Nusselt number has a significantly increase as the flow behavior index is decreased.
Abstract: Biomass is renewable and sustainable. As an energy source, it will not release extra carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Hence, tremendous efforts have been made to develop technologies capable of transforming biomass into suitable forms of bio-fuel. One of the viable technologies is gasifying biomass in supercritical water (SCW), a green medium for reactions. While previous studies overwhelmingly selected glucose as a model compound for biomass, the present study adopted fructose for the sake of comparison. The gasification of fructose in SCW was investigated experimentally to evaluate the applicability of supercritical water processes to biomass gasification. Experiments were conducted with an autoclave reactor. Gaseous product mainly consists of H2, CO, CO2, CH4 and C2H6. The effect of two major operating parameters, the reaction temperature (673-873 K) and the dosage of oxidizing agent (0-0.5 stoichiometric oxygen), on the product gas composition, yield and heating value was also examined, with the reaction pressure fixed at 25 MPa.

Abstract: In recent years, many researchers are involved in the
field of fuzzy theory. However, there are still a lot of issues to be
resolved. Especially on topics related to controller design such as the
field of robot, artificial intelligence, and nonlinear systems etc.
Besides fuzzy theory, algorithms in swarm intelligence are also a
popular field for the researchers. In this paper, a concept of utilizing
one of the swarm intelligence method, which is called Bacterial-GA
Foraging, to find the stabilized common P matrix for the fuzzy
controller system is proposed. An example is given in in the paper, as
well.
Abstract: In this paper, we present a neural-network (NN) based
approach to represent a nonlinear Tagagi-Sugeno (T-S) system. A
linear differential inclusion (LDI) state-space representation is utilized
to deal with the NN models. Taking advantage of the LDI
representation, the stability conditions and controller design are
derived for a class of nonlinear structural systems. Moreover, the
concept of utilizing the Parallel Particle Swarm Optimization (PPSO)
algorithm to solve the common P matrix under the stability criteria is
given in this paper.
Abstract: Although several factors that affect learning to
program have been identified over the years, there continues to be no
indication of any consensus in understanding why some students learn
to program easily and quickly while others have difficulty. Seldom
have researchers considered the problem of how to help the students
enhance the programming learning outcome. The research had been
conducted at a high school in Taiwan. Students participating in the
study consist of 330 tenth grade students enrolled in the Basic
Computer Concepts course with the same instructor. Two types of
training methods-instruction-oriented and exploration-oriented were
conducted. The result of this research shows that the
instruction-oriented training method has better learning performance
than exploration-oriented training method.
Abstract: The study aimed to collect morphological data of
secretory structures that contribute to taxonomy of Indigofera. Detail
features of trichomes occurrence in vegetative and reproductive
organs of Indigofera wightii Grah. ex Wigh & Arn., a species
traditionally used as source of indigo to dye “Thaisongdam” clothing
were investigated. Examination through light microscopy and
scanning electrom microscopy were done. Non secretory, T-shaped
trichomes appeared throughout surfaces of stems, leaves, flowers and
fruits. Secretory or glandular trichomes occurred in two types; one
has big cylindrical head and short peduncle, distributed on adaxial
surface of sepals and around the pedicel, whereas another possesses
smaller cylindrical head but long peduncle. The latter was found on
apical surface of immature pods. No phenolic and lipophilic
compounds were detected from these glands.
Abstract: Interorganizational knowledge sharing is the major driving force to maximize the operational benefits across supply chain. Trust is considered as the key to facilitate knowledge sharing. This research proposes shared values and relational embeddedness as antecedents of interorganizational trust. Survey based on managers in major industrial parks in Taiwan confirm that trust is enforced when organizations develop shared values and formed social relational embeddedness. Trust leads to interorganizational knowledge sharing. This research has theoretical and practical implications.
Abstract: This research studies the electroplating of zinc coating
in the zinc chloride bath mixed with supercritical CO2. The sodium
fluoride (NaF) was used as the bath additive to change the structure
and property of the coating, and therefore the roughness and corrosion
resistance of the zinc coating was investigated. The surface
characterization was performed using optical microscope (OM), X-ray
diffractometer (XRD), and α-step profilometer. Moreover, the
potentiodynamic polarization measurement in 3% NaCl solution was
employed in the corrosion resistance evaluation. Because of the
emulsification of the electrolyte mixed in Sc-CO2, the electroplated
zinc produced the coating with smoother surface, smaller grain, better
throwing power and higher corrosion resistance. The main role played
by the NaF was to reduce the coating’s roughness and grain size. In
other words, the CO2 mixed with the electrolyte under the supercritical
condition performed the similar function as brighter and leveler in zinc
electroplating to enhance the throwing power and corrosion resistance
of the coating.
Abstract: The dry-storage systems of nuclear power plants (NPPs) in Taiwan have become one of the major safety concerns. There are two steps considered in this study. The first step is the verification of the TRACE by using VSC-17 experimental data. The results of TRACE were similar to the VSC-17 data. It indicates that TRACE has the respectable accuracy in the simulation and analysis of the dry-storage systems. The next step is the application of TRACE in the dry-storage system of Kuosheng NPP (BWR/6). Kuosheng NPP is the second BWR NPP of Taiwan Power Company. In order to solve the storage of the spent fuels, Taiwan Power Company developed the new dry-storage system for Kuosheng NPP. In this step, the dry-storage system model of Kuosheng NPP was established by TRACE. Then, the steady state simulation of this model was performed and the results of TRACE were compared with the Kuosheng NPP data. Finally, this model was used to perform the safety analysis of Kuosheng NPP dry-storage system. Besides, FRAPTRAN was used tocalculate the transient performance of fuel rods.
