Abstract: Team pursuit is a relatively new event in international
long track speed skating. For a single speed skater the aerodynamic
drag will account for up to 80% of the braking force, thus reducing
the drag can greatly improve the performance. In a team pursuit the
interactions between athletes in near proximity will also be essential,
but is not well studied. In this study, systematic measurements
of the aerodynamic drag, body posture and relative positioning
of speed skaters have been performed in the low speed wind
tunnel at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, in
order to investigate the aerodynamic interaction between two speed
skaters. Drag measurements of static speed skaters drafting, leading,
side-by-side, and dynamic drag measurements in a synchronized and
unsynchronized movement at different distances, were performed.
The projected frontal area was measured for all postures and
movements and a blockage correction was performed, as the blockage
ratio ranged from 5-15% in the different setups. The static drag
measurements where performed on two test subjects in two different
postures, a low posture and a high posture, and two different distances
between the test subjects 1.5T and 3T where T being the length of the
torso (T=0.63m). A drag reduction was observed for all distances and
configurations, from 39% to 11.4%, for the drafting test subject. The
drag of the leading test subject was only influenced at -1.5T, with
the biggest drag reduction of 5.6%. An increase in drag was seen
for all side-by-side measurements, the biggest increase was observed
to be 25.7%, at the closest distance between the test subjects, and
the lowest at 2.7% with ∼ 0.7 m between the test subjects. A clear
aerodynamic interaction between the test subjects and their postures
was observed for most measurements during static measurements,
with results corresponding well to recent studies. For the dynamic
measurements, the leading test subject had a drag reduction of 3%
even at -3T. The drafting showed a drag reduction of 15% when being
in a synchronized (sync) motion with the leading test subject at 4.5T.
The maximal drag reduction for both the leading and the drafting
test subject were observed when being as close as possible in sync,
with a drag reduction of 8.5% and 25.7% respectively. This study
emphasize the importance of keeping a synchronized movement by
showing that the maximal gain for the leading and drafting dropped to
3.2% and 3.3% respectively when the skaters are in opposite phase.
Individual differences in technique also appear to influence the drag
of the other test subject.
Abstract: The amount of resistance of a particular medium like soil to the moving objects is the interest of many areas in science. These include soil mechanics, geotechnical engineering, powder mechanics etc. Knowledge of drag force is also used for estimating the amount of momentum of fired objects like bullets. This paper focuses on measurement of drag force of sand on a cone when it moves at a low constant speed. A 30-degree apex angle cone has been used for this purpose. The study consisted of both loose and dense conditions of the soil. The applied speed has been in the range of 0.1 to 10 mm/min. The results indicate that the required force is basically independent of the cone speed; but, it is very dependent on the material densification and confining stress.
Abstract: This paper presents a study on the trajectory of a two stage launch vehicle. The study includes dynamic responses of motion parameters as well as the variation of angles affecting the orientation of the launch vehicle (LV). LV dynamic characteristics including state vector variation with corresponding altitude and velocity for the different LV stages separation, as well as the angle of attack and flight path angles are also discussed. A flight trajectory study for the drop zone of first stage and the jettisoning of fairing are introduced in the mathematical modeling to study their effect. To increase the accuracy of the LV model, atmospheric model is used taking into consideration geographical location and the values of solar flux related to the date and time of launch, accurate atmospheric model leads to enhancement of the calculation of Mach number, which affects the drag force over the LV. The mathematical model is implemented on MATLAB based software (Simulink). The real available experimental data are compared with results obtained from the theoretical computation model. The comparison shows good agreement, which proves the validity of the developed simulation model; the maximum error noticed was generally less than 10%, which is a result that can lead to future works and enhancement to decrease this level of error.
Abstract: A two-dimensional numerical study for flow past a square cylinder in presence of flat plate both at upstream and downstream position is carried out using the single-relaxation-time lattice Boltzmann method for gap spacing 0.5 and 1. We select Reynolds numbers from 80 to 200. The wake structure mechanism within gap spacing and near wake region, vortex structures around and behind the main square cylinder in presence of flat plate are studied and compared with flow pattern around a single square cylinder. The results are obtained in form of vorticity contour, streamlines, power spectra analysis, time trace analysis of drag and lift coefficients. Four different types of flow patterns were observed in both configurations, named as (i) Quasi steady flow (QSF), (ii) steady flow (SF), (iii) shear layer reattachment (SLR), (iv) single bluff body (SBB). It is observed that upstream flat plate plays a vital role in significant drag reduction. On the other hand, rate of suppression of vortex shedding is high for downstream flat plate case at low Reynolds numbers. The reduction in mean drag force and root mean square value of drag force for upstream flat plate case are89.1% and 86.3% at (Re, g) = (80, 0.5d) and (120, 1d) and reduction for downstream flat plate case for mean drag force and root mean square value of drag force are 11.10% and 97.6% obtained at (180, 1d) and (180, 0.5d).
Abstract: Improvement in vehicle efficiency can reduce global fossil fuels consumptions. For that sole reason, Shell Global Corporation introduces Shell Eco-marathon where student teams require to design, build and test energy-efficient vehicles. Hence, this paper will focus on design processes and the development of a fuel economic vehicle which satisfying the requirements of the competition. In this project, three components are designed and analyzed, which are the body, chassis and powertrain of the vehicle. Optimum design for each component is produced through simulation analysis and theoretical calculation in which improvement is made as the project progresses.
Abstract: Mineral product, waste concrete (fine aggregates),
waste in the optical field, industry, and construction employ separators
to separate solids and classify them according to their size. Various
sorting machines are used in the industrial field such as those operating
under electrical properties, centrifugal force, wind power, vibration,
and magnetic force. Study on separators has been carried out to
contribute to the environmental industry. In this study, we perform
CFD analysis for understanding the basic mechanism of the separation
of waste concrete (fine aggregate) particles from air with a machine
built with a rotor with blades. In CFD, we first performed
two-dimensional particle tracking for various particle sizes for the
model with 1 degree, 1.5 degree, and 2 degree angle between each
blade to verify the boundary conditions and the method of rotating
domain method to be used in 3D. Then we developed 3D numerical
model with ANSYS CFX to calculate the air flow and track the
particles. We judged the capability of particle separation for given size
by counting the number of particles escaping from the domain toward
the exit among 10 particles issued at the inlet. We confirm that
particles experience stagnant behavior near the exit of the rotating
blades where the centrifugal force acting on the particles is in balance
with the air drag force. It was also found that the minimum particle
size that can be separated by the machine with the rotor is determined
by its capability to stay at the outlet of the rotor channels.
Abstract: In IA-MDT, the magnetic implants are placed
strategically at the target site to greatly and locally increase the
magnetic force on MDCPs and help to attract and retain the MDCPs
at the targeted region. In the present work, we develop a
mathematical model to study the capturing of magnetic nanoparticles
flowing within a fluid in an implant assisted cylindrical channel
under magnetic field. A coil of ferromagnetic SS-430 has been
implanted inside the cylindrical channel to enhance the capturing of
magnetic nanoparticles under magnetic field. The dominant magnetic
and drag forces, which significantly affect the capturing of
nanoparticles, are incorporated in the model. It is observed through
model results that capture efficiency increases as we increase the
magnetic field from 0.1 to 0.5 T, respectively. The increase in capture
efficiency by increase in magnetic field is because as the magnetic
field increases, the magnetization force, which is attractive in nature
and responsible to attract or capture the magnetic particles, increases
and results the capturing of large number of magnetic particles due to
high strength of attractive magnetic force.
Abstract: This numerical study aims to develop a coupled,
passive and active control strategy of the flow around a cylinder of
diameter D, and Re=4000. The strategy consists to put a cylindrical
rod in front of a deforming cylinder. The quasi- elliptical deformation
of cylinder follow a sinusoidal law in order to reduce the drag force.
To analyze the evolution of unsteady vortices, the Large Eddy
Simulation approach is used in this 2D simulation, carried out using
ANSYS – Fluent. The movement of deformation is reproduced using
an internal subroutine, introduced in the form of a User Defined
Function UDF. Two diameters of the rod were tested for a rod placed
at a distance L = 3 ×d, with an amplitudes of deformation A = 5%, A
= 25% and A = 50% of the cylinder diameter, the frequency of
deformation take the values fd = 1fn, 5fn and 8fn, which fn
represents the naturel vortex shedding frequency. The results show
substantial changes in the flow behavior and for a rod of 6mm (1%
D) with amplitude A = 25%, and with a 2fn frequency, drag
reduction of 60% was recorded.
Abstract: When a building is located in an urban area, it is
exposed to a wind of different characteristics then wind over an open
terrain. This is development of turbulent wake region behind an
upstream building. The interaction with upstream building can
produce significant changes in the response of the tall building. Here,
in this paper, an attempt has been made to study wind induced
interference effects on tall building. In order to study wind induced
interference effect (IF) on Tall Building, initially a tall building
(which is termed as Principal Building now on wards) with square
plan shape has been considered with different Height to Width Ratio
and total drag force is obtained considering different terrain
conditions as well as different incident wind direction. Then total
drag force on Principal Building is obtained by considering adjacent
building which is termed as Interfering Building now on wards with
different terrain conditions and incident wind angle. To execute
study, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) Code namely Fluent
and Gambit have been used.
Abstract: We have studied the migration of a charged permeable aggregate in electrolyte under the influence of an axial electric field and pressure gradient. The migration of the positively charged aggregate leads to a deformation of the anionic cloud around it. The hydrodynamics of the aggregate is governed by the interaction of electroosmotic flow in and around the particle, hydrodynamic friction and electric force experienced by the aggregate. We have computed the non-linear Nernest-Planck equations coupled with the Dracy- Brinkman extended Navier-Stokes equations and Poisson equation for electric field through a finite volume method. The permeability of the aggregate enable the counterion penetration. The penetration of counterions depends on the volume charge density of the aggregate and ionic concentration of electrolytes at a fixed field strength. The retardation effect due to the double layer polarization increases the drag force compared to an uncharged aggregate. Increase in migration sped from the electrophretic velocity of the aggregate produces further asymmetry in charge cloud and reduces the electric body force exerted on the particle. The permeability of the particle have relatively little influence on the electric body force when Double layer is relatively thin. The impact of the key parameters of electrokinetics on the hydrodynamics of the aggregate is analyzed.
Abstract: In the current work, a numerical parametric study was
performed in order to model the fluid mechanics in the riser of a
bubbling fluidized bed (BFB). The gas-solid flow was simulated by
mean of a multi-fluid Eulerian model incorporating the kinetic theory
for solid particles. The bubbling fluidized bed was simulated two
dimensionally by mean of a Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD)
commercial software package, Fluent. The effects of using different
inter-phase drag function (the drag model of Gidaspow, Syamlal and
O-Brien and the EMMS drag model) on the model predictions were
evaluated and compared. The results showed that the drag models of
Gidaspow and Syamlal and O-Brien overestimated the drag force for
the FCC particles and predicted a greater bed expansion in
comparison to the EMMS drag model.
Abstract: Endovascular aneurysm repair is a new and minimally invasive repair for patients with abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA). This method has potential advantages that are incomparable with other repair methods. However, the enlargement of aneurysm in the absence of endoleak, which is known as endotension, may occur as one of post-operative compliances of this method. Typically, endotension is mainly as a result of pressure transmitted to aneurysm sac by endovascular installed graft. After installation of graft the aneurysm sac reduces significantly but remains non-zero. There are some factors which affect this pressure transmitted. In this study, the geometry features of installed vascular graft have been considered. It is inferred that graft neck angle and iliac bifurcation angle are two factors which can affect the drag force on graft and consequently the pressure transmitted to aneurysm.
Abstract: As it is known, buoyancy and drag forces rule bubble's rise velocity in a liquid column. These forces are strongly dependent on fluid properties, gravity as well as equivalent's diameter. This study reports a set of bubble rising velocity experiments in a liquid column using water or glycerol. Several records of terminal velocity were obtained. The results show that bubble's rise terminal velocity is strongly dependent on dynamic viscosity effect. The data set allowed to have some terminal velocities data interval of 8.0 ? 32.9 cm/s with Reynolds number interval 1.3 -7490. The bubble's movement was recorded with a video camera. The main goal is to present an original set data and results that will be discussed based on two-phase flow's theory. It will also discussed, the prediction of terminal velocity of a single bubble in liquid, as well as the range of its applicability. In conclusion, this study presents general expressions for the determination of the terminal velocity of isolated gas bubbles of a Reynolds number range, when the fluid proprieties are known.
Abstract: In the present paper; an experimental and numerical
investigations of drag reduction on a grooved circular cylinder have
been performed. The experiments were carried out in closed circuit
subsonic wind tunnel (TE44); the pressure distribution on the
cylinder was conducted using a TE44DPS differential pressure
scanner and the drag forces were measured using the TE81 balance.
The display unit is linked to a computer, loaded with DATASLIM
software for data analysis and logging of result. The numerical study
was performed using the code ANSYS FLUENT solving the
Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations. The k-ε and k-
ω SST models were tested. The results obtained from the
experimental and numerical investigations have showed a reduction
in the drag when using longitudinal grooves namely 2 and 6 on the
cylinder.
Abstract: The hydrodynamic and thermal lattice Boltzmann
methods are applied to investigate the turbulent convective heat
transfer in the wavy channel flows. In this study, the turbulent
phenomena are modeling by large-eddy simulations with the
Smagorinsky model. As a benchmark, the laminar and turbulent
backward-facing step flows are simulated first. The results give good
agreement with other numerical and experimental data. For wavy
channel flows, the distribution of Nusselt number and the skin-friction
coefficients are calculated to evaluate the heat transfer effect and the
drag force. It indicates that the vortices at the trough would affect the
magnitude of drag and weaken the heat convection effects on the wavy
surface. In turbulent cases, if the amplitude of the wavy boundary is
large enough, the secondary vortices would be generated at troughs
and contribute to the heat convection. Finally, the effects of different
Re on the turbulent transport phenomena are discussed.
Abstract: The paper presents a one-dimensional transient
mathematical model of thermal oil-water two-phase emulsion flows
in pipes. The set of the mass, momentum and enthalpy conservation
equations for the continuous fluid and droplet phases are solved. Two
friction correlations for the continuous fluid phase to wall friction are
accounted for in the model and tested. The aerodynamic drag force
between the continuous fluid phase and droplets is modeled, too. The
density and viscosity of both phases are assumed to be constant due
to adiabatic experimental conditions. The proposed mathematical
model is validated on the experimental measurements of oil-water
emulsion flows in horizontal pipe [1,2]. Numerical analysis on
single- and two-phase oil-water flows in a pipe is presented in the
paper. The continuous oil flow having water droplets is simulated.
Predictions, which are performed by using the presented model, show
excellent agreement with the experimental data if the water fraction is
equal or less than 10%. Disagreement between simulations and
measurements is increased if the water fraction is larger than 10%.
