Abstract: We focus on internal stress and displacement of an elastic axisymmetric contact problem for indentation of a layer-substrate body. An elastic layer is assumed to be perfectly bonded to an elastic semi-infinite substrate. The elastic layer is smoothly indented with a flat-ended cylindrical indenter. The analytical and exact solutions were obtained by solving an infinite system of simultaneous equations using the method to express a normal contact stress at the upper surface of the elastic layer as an appropriate series. This paper presented the numerical results of internal stress and displacement distributions for hard-coating system with constant values of Poisson’s ratio and the thickness of elastic layer.
Abstract: Contact width and contact stress are important parameters related to the leakage behavior of corrugated metal gasket. In this study, contact width and contact stress of three-layer corrugated metal gasket are investigated due to the modulus of elasticity and thickness of surface layer for 2 type gasket (0-MPa and 400-MPa mode). A finite element method was employed to develop simulation solution to analysis the effect of each parameter. The result indicated that lowering the modulus of elasticity ratio of surface layer will result in better contact width but the average contact stresses are smaller. When the modulus of elasticity ratio is held constant with thickness ratio increase, its contact width has an increscent trend otherwise the average contact stress has decreased trend.
Abstract: Contact width and contact stress are important design parameters for optimizing corrugated metal gasket performance based on elastic and plastic contact stress. In this study, we used a three-layer metal gasket with Al, Cu, Ni as the outer layer, respectively. A finite element method was employed to develop simulation solution. The gasket model was simulated by using two simulation stages which are forming and tightening simulation. The simulation result shows that aluminum with tangent modulus, Ehal = Eal/150 has the highest slope for contact width. The slope of contact width for plastic mode gasket was higher than the elastic mode gasket.
Abstract: Main objective of this paper is to establish a link
between inertial forces of the bearings used in construction of wind
power plant and its behavior. Using bearings with lower inertial
forces has the immediate effect of decreasing inertia rotor system,
with significant results in increased energy efficiency, due to
decreased friction forces between rollers and raceways. The F.E.M.
analysis shows the appearance of uniform contact stress at the ends of
the rollers, demonstrated the necessity of production of low mass
bearings. Favorable results are expected in the economic field, by
reducing material consumption and by increasing the durability of
bearings. Using low mass bearings with hollow rollers instead of
solid rollers has an impact on working temperature, on vibrations and
noise which decrease. Implementation of types of hollow rollers of
cylindrical tubular type, instead of expensive rollers with logarithmic
profile, will bring significant inertial forces decrease with large
benefits in behavior of wind power plant.
Abstract: Singular value decomposition based optimisation of
geometric design parameters of a 5-speed gearbox is studied. During
the optimisation, a four-degree-of freedom torsional vibration model
of the pinion gear-wheel gear system is obtained and the minimum
singular value of the transfer matrix is considered as the objective
functions. The computational cost of the associated singular value
problems is quite low for the objective function, because it is only
necessary to compute the largest and smallest singular values (μmax
and μmin) that can be achieved by using selective eigenvalue solvers;
the other singular values are not needed. The design parameters are
optimised under several constraints that include bending stress,
contact stress and constant distance between gear centres. Thus, by
optimising the geometric parameters of the gearbox such as, the
module, number of teeth and face width it is possible to obtain a
light-weight-gearbox structure. It is concluded that the all optimised
geometric design parameters also satisfy all constraints.
Abstract: Contact stress is an important problem in industry.
This is a problem that in the first attention may be don-t appears, but
disregard of these stresses cause a lot of damages in machines. These
stresses occur at locations such as gear teeth, bearings, cams and
between a locomotive wheel and the railroad rail. These stresses
cause failure by excessive elastic deformation, yielding and fracture.
In this paper we intend show the effective parameters in contact
stress and ponder effect of curvature. In this paper we study contact
stresses on the surface of gear teeth and compare these stresses for
four popular profiles of gear teeth (involute, cycloid, epicycloids, and
hypocycloid). We study this problem with mathematical and finite
element methods and compare these two methods on different profile
surfaces.
Abstract: Contact stress analysis between two spur gear
teeth was considered in different contact positions,
representing a pair of mating gears during rotation. A
programme has been developed to plot a pair of teeth in contact. This programme was run for each 3° of pinion
rotation from the first location of contact to the last location of
contact to produce 10 cases. Each case was represented a
sequence position of contact between these two teeth. The
programme gives graphic results for the profiles of these teeth
in each position and location of contact during rotation. Finite
element models were made for these cases and stress analysis
was done. The results were presented and finite element
analysis results were compared with theoretical calculations,
wherever available.
Abstract: A first intermediate roll of Sendzirmir mills was failure
by surface spalling during operation. After analyzing by visual, stereo
microscope, optical microscope, scanning electron microscope,
glow-discharged spectrometer and hardness test, respectively, the
results show that some voids and cracks existed on the contact surface
as well as subsurface. Further examination verified inadequate
hardness and inclusions were responsible for the failure of surface
spalling.
Abstract: At the previous study of new metal gasket, contact
width and contact stress were important design parameter for
optimizing metal gasket performance. However, the range of contact
stress had not been investigated thoroughly. In this study, we
conducted a gasket design optimization based on an elastic and plastic
contact stress analysis considering forming effect using FEM. The
gasket model was simulated by using two simulation stages which is
forming and tightening simulation. The optimum design based on an
elastic and plastic contact stress was founded. Final evaluation was
determined by helium leak quantity to check leakage performance of
both type of gaskets. The helium leak test shows that a gasket based
on the plastic contact stress design better than based on elastic stress
design.
Abstract: The previous study of new metal gasket that contact
width and contact stress an important design parameter for optimizing
metal gasket performance. The optimum design based on an elastic
and plastic contact stress was founded. However, the influence of
flange surface roughness had not been investigated thoroughly. The
flange has many kinds of surface roughness. In this study, we
conducted a gasket model include a flange surface roughness effect. A
finite element method was employed to develop simulation solution. A
uniform quadratic mesh used for meshing the gasket material and a
gradually quadrilateral mesh used for meshing the flange. The gasket
model was simulated by using two simulation stages which is forming
and tightening simulation. A simulation result shows that a smoother
of surface roughness has higher slope for force per unit length. This
mean a squeezed against between flange and gasket will be strong. The
slope of force per unit length for gasket 400-MPa mode was higher
than the gasket 0-MPa mode.
Abstract: A frictionless contact problem for a two-layer orthotropic elastic medium loaded through a rigid flat stamp is considered. It is assumed that tensile tractions are not allowed and only compressive tractions can be transmitted across the interface. In the solution, effect of gravity is taken into consideration. If the external load on the rigid stamp is less than or equal to a critical value, continuous contact between the layers is maintained. The problem is expressed in terms of a singular integral equation by using the theory of elasticity and the Fourier transforms. Numerical results for initial separation point, critical separation load and contact stress distribution are presented.
Abstract: Evaluation of contact pressure, surface and
subsurface contact stresses are essential to know the functional
response of surface coatings and the contact behavior mainly depends
on surface roughness, material property, thickness of layer and the
manner of loading. Contact parameter evaluation of real rough
surface contacts mostly relies on statistical single asperity contact
approaches. In this work, a three dimensional layered solid rough
surface in contact with a rigid flat is modeled and analyzed using
finite element method. The rough surface of layered solid is
generated by FFT approach. The generated rough surface is exported
to a finite element method based ANSYS package through which the
bottom up solid modeling is employed to create a deformable solid
model with a layered solid rough surface on top. The discretization
and contact analysis are carried by using the same ANSYS package.
The elastic, elastoplastic and plastic deformations are continuous in
the present finite element method unlike many other contact models.
The Young-s modulus to yield strength ratio of layer is varied in the
present work to observe the contact parameters effect while keeping
the surface roughness and substrate material properties as constant.
The contacting asperities attain elastic, elastoplastic and plastic states
with their continuity and asperity interaction phenomena is inherently
included. The resultant contact parameters show that neighboring
asperity interaction and the Young-s modulus to yield strength ratio
of layer influence the bulk deformation consequently affect the
interface strength.
Abstract: This paper presents the influence of preloading on a)
the contact tractions, b) slip levels and c) stresses at the dovetail
blade-disc interface of an aero-engine through a three-dimensional
(3D) finite element (FE) modeling and analysis. The preloading is
applied by an interference fit at the dovetail interface and the bulk
loading is applied through the rotational speed of rotor. Preloading at
the dovetail interface reduces the peak contact pressure developed
due to bulk loading up to 35%, and reduces the peak contact pressure
and stress difference between top and bottom contact edges.
Increasing the level of preloading reduces the cyclic stress amplitude
at the interface up to certain values of preload and as a consequence,
an improvement in fatigue life could be expected. Fretting damage,
due to vibration and wind milling effect during engine ground
condition, can be minimized by preloading the dovetail interface.
