Abstract: The technique called as Generalized frequency division
multiplexing (GFDM) used in the free space optical channel can be
a good option for implementation free space optical communication
systems. This technique has several strengths e.g. good spectral
efficiency, low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), adaptability
and low co-channel interference. In this paper, the impact of
weather conditions such as haze, rain and fog on GFDM over the
gamma-gamma channel model is discussed. A Trade off between link
distance and system performance under intense weather conditions is
also analysed. The symbol error probability (SEP) of GFDM over
the gamma-gamma turbulence channel is derived and verified with
the computer simulations.
Abstract: This paper presents a method for single image dehazing based on dark channel prior (DCP). The property that the intensity of the dark channel gives an approximate thickness of the haze is used to estimate the transmission and atmospheric light. Instead of constant atmospheric light, the proposed method employs scene depth to estimate spatially varying atmospheric light as it truly occurs in nature. Haze imaging model together with the soft matting method has been used in this work to produce high quality haze free image. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach produces better results than the classic DCP approach as color fidelity and contrast of haze free image are improved and no over-saturation in the sky region is observed. Further, lifting Haar wavelet transform is employed to reduce overall execution time by a factor of two to three as compared to the conventional approach.
Abstract: In this paper a method for image dehazing is proposed in lifting wavelet transform domain. Lifting Daubechies (D4) wavelet has been used to obtain the approximate image and detail images. As the haze is contained in low frequency part, only the approximate image is used for further processing. This region is processed by dehazing algorithm based on dark channel prior (DCP). The dehazed approximate image is then recombined with the detail images using inverse lifting wavelet transform. Implementation of lifting wavelet transform has the advantage of auxiliary memory saving, fast implementation and simplicity. Also, the proposed method deals with near white scene problem, blue horizon issue and localized light sources in a way to enhance image quality and makes the algorithm robust. Simulation results present improvement in terms of visual quality, parameters such as root mean square (RMS) contrast, structural similarity index (SSIM), entropy and execution time.
Abstract: Performance of a supply chain is directly related to a distribution network that entails the location of storing materials or products and how products are delivered to the end customer through different stages in the supply chain. This study analyses the current distribution network used for delivering gas cylinders to end customer in Jordan. Evaluation of current distribution has been conducted across customer service components. A modification on the current distribution network in terms of central warehousing in each city in the country improves the response time and customer experience.
Abstract: The goal of this research was to study the relationship between codependency, perceived social support and depression in mothers of children with intellectual disability (ID). The correlational method was used in this study. The research population is comprised of mothers of educable children with ID in the age range of 25 to 61 years. From among this, a sample of 251 individuals, in the multistage cluster sampling method, was selected from educational districts in Tehran, who responded to the Spann-Fischer Codependency Scale (SFCDS), the Social Support Questionnaire and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). The findings of this study indicate that among mothers of children with ID depression has a positive and significant correlation with codependency (P
Abstract: Within geostatistics research, effective estimation of
the variogram points has been examined, particularly in developing
robust alternatives. The parametric fit of these variogram points which
eventually defines the kriging weights, however, has not received
the same attention from a robust perspective. This paper proposes
the use of the non-linear Wilcoxon norm over weighted non-linear
least squares as a robust variogram fitting alternative. First, we
introduce the concept of variogram estimation and fitting. Then, as
an alternative to non-linear weighted least squares, we discuss the
non-linear Wilcoxon estimator. Next, the robustness properties of the
non-linear Wilcoxon are demonstrated using a contaminated spatial
data set. Finally, under simulated conditions, increasing levels of
contaminated spatial processes have their variograms points estimated
and fit. In the fitting of these variogram points, both non-linear
Weighted Least Squares and non-linear Wilcoxon fits are examined
for efficiency. At all levels of contamination (including 0%), using
a robust estimation and robust fitting procedure, the non-weighted
Wilcoxon outperforms weighted Least Squares.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to estimate the digestibility of the fruit internal skin of different varieties of hazelnuts to propose hazelnut fruit skin as an alternative feed source as roughage in ruminant nutrition. In 2015, the fruit internal skins of three different varieties of round hazelnuts (RH), pointed hazelnuts (PH) and almond hazelnuts (AH) were obtained from hazelnut processing factory then their crude nutrients analysis were carried out. Organic matter digestibility (OMD) and metabolisable energy (ME) values of hazelnut fruit skins were estimated from gas measured by in vitro gas production method. Their antioxidant activities were determined by spectrophotometric method. Crude nutrient values of three different varieties were; organic matter (OM): 87.83, 87.81 and 87.78%), crude protein (CP): 5.97, 5.93 and 5.89%, neutral detergent fiber (NDF): 30.30, 30.29 and 30.29%, acid detergent fiber (ADF): 48.68, 48.67 and 48.66% and acid detergent lignin (ADL): 25.43, 25.43 and 25.39% respectively. OMD from 24 h incubation time of RH, PH and AH were 22.04, 22.46 and 22.74%; MEGP values were 3.69, 3.75 and 3.79 MJ/kg DM; and antioxidant activity values were 94.60, 94.54 and 94.52 IC 50 mg/mL respectively. The fruit internal skin of different varieties of hazelnuts may be considered as an alternative roughage for ruminant nutrition regarding to their crude and digestible nutritive values. Moreover, hazelnut fruit skin has a rich antioxidant content so it may be used as a feed additive for both ruminant and non-ruminant animals.
Abstract: In this paper numerous robust fitting procedures are considered in estimating spatial variograms. In spatial statistics, the conventional variogram fitting procedure (non-linear weighted least squares) suffers from the same outlier problem that has plagued this method from its inception. Even a 3-parameter model, like the variogram, can be adversely affected by a single outlier. This paper uses the Hogg-Type adaptive procedures to select an optimal score function for a rank-based estimator for these non-linear models. Numeric examples and simulation studies will demonstrate the robustness, utility, efficiency, and validity of these estimates.
Abstract: Although there has been a growing interest in the
hybrid free-space optical link and radio frequency FSO/RF
communication system, the current literature is limited to results
obtained in moderate or cold environment. In this paper, using a soft
switching approach, we investigate the effect of weather
inhomogeneities on the strength of turbulence hence the channel
refractive index under Qatar harsh environment and their influence
on the hybrid FSO/RF availability. In this approach, either FSO/RF
or simultaneous or none of them can be active. Based on soft
switching approach and a finite state Markov Chain (FSMC) process,
we model the channel fading for the two links and derive a
mathematical expression for the outage probability of the hybrid
system. Then, we evaluate the behavior of the hybrid FSO/RF under
hazy and harsh weather. Results show that the FSO/RF soft switching
renders the system outage probability less than that of each link
individually. A soft switching algorithm is being implemented on
FPGAs using Raptor code interfaced to the two terminals of a
1Gbps/100 Mbps FSO/RF hybrid system, the first being implemented
in the region. Experimental results are compared to the above
simulation results.

Abstract: Newly synthesized Polypropylene-g-Polyethylene
glycol polymer was first time used for a compartment-less enzymatic
fuel cell. Working electrodes based on Polypropylene-g-Polyethylene
glycol were operated as unmediated and mediated system (with
ferrocene and gold/cobalt oxide nanoparticles). Glucose oxidase and
bilirubin oxidase was selected as anodic and cathodic enzyme,
respectively. Glucose was used as fuel in a single-compartment and
membrane-less cell. Maximum power density was obtained as 0.65
nW cm-2, 65 nW cm-2 and 23500 nW cm-2 from the unmediated,
ferrocene and gold/cobalt oxide modified polymeric film,
respectively. Power density was calculated to be ~16000 nW cm-2 for
undiluted wastewater sample with gold/cobalt oxide nanoparticles
including system.
Abstract: Metallic foams have good potential for lightweight
structures for impact and blast mitigation. Therefore it is important to
find out the optimized foam structure (i.e. cell size, shape, relative
density, and distribution) to maximise energy absorption. In this
paper, quasistatic compression and microstructural characterization
of closed-cell aluminium foams of different pore size and cell
distributions have been carried out. We present results for two
different aluminium metal foams of density 0.49-0.51 g/cc and 0.31-
0.34 g/cc respectively that have been tested in quasi-static
compression. The influence of cell geometry and cell topology on
quasistatic compression behaviour has been investigated using optical
microscope and computed tomography (micro-CT) analysis. It is
shown that the deformation is not uniform in the structure and
collapse begins at the weakest point.
Abstract: FMEA has been used for several years and proved its efficiency for system’s risk analysis due to failures. Risk priority number found in FMEA is used to rank failure modes that may occur in a system. There are some guidelines in the literature to assign the values of FMEA components known as Severity, Occurrence and Detection. This paper propose a method to assign the value for occurrence in more realistic manner representing the state of the system under study rather than depending totally on the experience of the analyst. This method uses the hazard function of a system to determine the value of occurrence depending on the behavior of the hazard being constant, increasing or decreasing.
Abstract: We present a method for dehazing images. A dark
envelope image is derived with the bilateral minimum filter and a
bright envelope is derived with the bilateral maximum filter. The
ambient light and transmission of the scene are estimated from these
two envelope images. An image without haze is reconstructed from
the estimated ambient light and transmission.
Abstract: The picture of a perfect road construction site is the one that utilizes conventional vertical road signs and a flagman to optimize the traffic flow with minimum hazel to the public. Former research has been carried out by Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) and Ministry of Works to further enhance smoothness in traffic operations and particularly in safety issues within work zones. This paper highlights on hazardous zones in a certain road construction or road maintenance site. Most cases show that the flagman falls into high risk of fatal accidents within work zone. Various measures have been taken by both the authorities and contractors to overcome such miseries, yet it-s impossible to eliminate the usage of a flagman since it is considered the best practice. With the implementation of new technologies in automating the traffic flow in road construction site, it is possible to eliminate the usage of a flagman. The intelligent traffic light system is designed to solve problems which contribute hazardous at road construction site and to be inline with the road safety regulation which is taken into granted.
Abstract: Adaptive e-learning today gives the student a central
role in his own learning process. It allows learners to try things out,
participate in courses like never before, and get more out of learning
than before. In this paper, an adaptive e-learning model for logic
design, simplification of Boolean functions and related fields is
presented. Such model presents suitable courses for each student in a
dynamic and adaptive manner using existing database and workflow
technologies. The main objective of this research work is to provide
an adaptive e-learning model based learners' personality using
explicit and implicit feedback. To recognize the learner-s, we develop
dimensions to decide each individual learning style in order to
accommodate different abilities of the users and to develop vital
skills. Thus, the proposed model becomes more powerful, user
friendly and easy to use and interpret. Finally, it suggests a learning
strategy and appropriate electronic media that match the learner-s
preference.
Abstract: In this paper a new fast simplification method is
presented. Such method realizes Karnough map with large
number of variables. In order to accelerate the operation of the
proposed method, a new approach for fast detection of group
of ones is presented. Such approach implemented in the
frequency domain. The search operation relies on performing
cross correlation in the frequency domain rather than time one.
It is proved mathematically and practically that the number of
computation steps required for the presented method is less
than that needed by conventional cross correlation. Simulation
results using MATLAB confirm the theoretical computations.
Furthermore, a powerful solution for realization of complex
functions is given. The simplified functions are implemented
by using a new desigen for neural networks. Neural networks
are used because they are fault tolerance and as a result they
can recognize signals even with noise or distortion. This is
very useful for logic functions used in data and computer
communications. Moreover, the implemented functions are
realized with minimum amount of components. This is done
by using modular neural nets (MNNs) that divide the input
space into several homogenous regions. Such approach is
applied to implement XOR function, 16 logic functions on one
bit level, and 2-bit digital multiplier. Compared to previous
non- modular designs, a clear reduction in the order of
computations and hardware requirements is achieved.
Abstract: In this paper, an intelligent algorithm for optimal
document archiving is presented. It is kown that electronic archives
are very important for information system management. Minimizing
the size of the stored data in electronic archive is a main issue to
reduce the physical storage area. Here, the effect of different types of
Arabic fonts on electronic archives size is discussed. Simulation
results show that PDF is the best file format for storage of the Arabic
documents in electronic archive. Furthermore, fast information
detection in a given PDF file is introduced. Such approach uses fast
neural networks (FNNs) implemented in the frequency domain. The
operation of these networks relies on performing cross correlation in
the frequency domain rather than spatial one. It is proved
mathematically and practically that the number of computation steps
required for the presented FNNs is less than that needed by
conventional neural networks (CNNs). Simulation results using
MATLAB confirm the theoretical computations.
Abstract: This paper presents an evaluation for a wavelet-based
digital watermarking technique used in estimating the quality of
video sequences transmitted over Additive White Gaussian Noise
(AWGN) channel in terms of a classical objective metric, such as
Peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio (PSNR) without the need of the original
video. In this method, a watermark is embedded into the Discrete
Wavelet Transform (DWT) domain of the original video frames
using a quantization method. The degradation of the extracted
watermark can be used to estimate the video quality in terms of
PSNR with good accuracy. We calculated PSNR for video frames
contaminated with AWGN and compared the values with those
estimated using the Watermarking-DWT based approach. It is found
that the calculated and estimated quality measures of the video
frames are highly correlated, suggesting that this method can provide
a good quality measure for video frames transmitted over AWGN
channel without the need of the original video.
