Abstract: As data to be stored in storage subsystems
tremendously increases, data protection techniques have become more
important than ever, to provide data availability and reliability. In this
paper, we present the file system-based data protection (WOWSnap)
that has been implemented using WORM (Write-Once-Read-Many)
scheme. In the WOWSnap, once WORM files have been created, only
the privileged read requests to them are allowed to protect data against
any intentional/accidental intrusions. Furthermore, all WORM files
are related to their protection cycle that is a time period during which
WORM files should securely be protected. Once their protection cycle
is expired, the WORM files are automatically moved to the
general-purpose data section without any user interference. This
prevents the WORM data section from being consumed by
unnecessary files. We evaluated the performance of WOWSnap on
Linux cluster.
Abstract: Purpose: To develop a method for automatic segmentation of adipose and muscular tissue in thighs from magnetic resonance images. Materials and methods: Thirty obese women were scanned on a Siemens Impact Expert 1T resonance machine. 1500 images were finally used in the tests. The developed segmentation method is a recursive and multilevel process that makes use of several concepts such as shaped histograms, adaptative thresholding and connectivity. The segmentation process was implemented in Matlab and operates without the need of any user interaction. The whole set of images were segmented with the developed method. An expert radiologist segmented the same set of images following a manual procedure with the aid of the SliceOmatic software (Tomovision). These constituted our 'goal standard'. Results: The number of coincidental pixels of the automatic and manual segmentation procedures was measured. The average results were above 90 % of success in most of the images. Conclusions: The proposed approach allows effective automatic segmentation of MRIs from thighs, comparable to expert manual performance.
Abstract: Providing authentication for the messages exchanged
between group members in addition to confidentiality is an important
issue in Secure Group communication. We develop a protocol for
Secure Authentic Communication where we address authentication
for the group communication scheme proposed by Blundo et al.
which only provides confidentiality. Authentication scheme used is a
multiparty authentication scheme which allows all the users in the
system to send and receive messages simultaneously. Our scheme is
secure against colluding malicious parties numbering fewer than k.
Abstract: The aim of this study was to test whether the Attention
Networks Test (ANT) showed temporal decrements in performance.
Vigilance tasks typically show such decrements, which may reflect
impairments in executive control resulting from cognitive fatigue.
The ANT assesses executive control, as well as alerting and
orienting. Thus, it was hypothesized that ANT executive control
would deteriorate over time. Manipulations including task condition
(trial composition) and masking were included in the experimental
design in an attempt to increase performance decrements. However,
results showed that there is no temporal decrement on the ANT. The
roles of task demands, cognitive fatigue and participant motivation in
producing this result are discussed. The ANT may not be an effective
tool for investigating temporal decrement in attention.
Abstract: Adapting wireless devices to communicate within grid
networks empowers us by providing range of possibilities.. These
devices create a mechanism for consumers and publishers to create
modern networks with or without peer device utilization. Emerging
mobile networks creates new challenges in the areas of reliability,
security, and adaptability. In this paper, we propose a system
encompassing mobility management using AAA context transfer for
mobile grid networks. This system ultimately results in seamless task
processing and reduced packet loss, communication delays,
bandwidth, and errors.
Abstract: The industrial process of the sugar cane crystallization produces a residual that still contains a lot of soluble sucrose and the objective of the factory is to improve its extraction. Therefore, there are substantial losses justifying the search for the optimization of the process. Crystallization process studied on the industrial site is based on the “three massecuites process". The third step of this process constitutes the final stage of exhaustion of the sucrose dissolved in the mother liquor. During the process of the third step of crystallization (Ccrystallization), the phase that is studied and whose control is to be improved, is the growing phase (crystal growth phase). The study of this process on the industrial site is a problem in its own. A control scheme is proposed to improve the standard PID control law used in the factory. An auto-tuning PID controller based on instantaneous linearization of a neural network is then proposed.
Abstract: Value engineering is an efficacious contraption for
administrators to make up their minds. Value perusals proffer the
gaffers a suitable instrument to decrease the expenditures of the life
span, quality amelioration, structural improvement, curtailment of the
construction schedule, longevity prolongation or a merging of the
aforementioned cases. Subjecting organizers to pressures on one
hand and their accountability towards their pertinent fields together
with inherent risks and ambiguities of other options on the other hand
set some comptrollers in a dilemma utilization of risk management
and the value engineering in projects manipulation with regard to
complexities of implementing projects can be wielded as a
contraption to identify and efface each item which wreaks
unnecessary expenses and time squandering sans inflicting any
damages upon the essential project applications. Of course It should
be noted that implementation of risk management and value
engineering with regard to the betterment of efficiency and functions
may lead to the project implementation timing elongation. Here time
revamping does not refer to time diminishing in the whole cases. his
article deals with risk and value engineering conceptualizations at
first. The germane reverberations effectuated due to its execution in
Iran Khodro Corporation are regarded together with the joint features
and amalgamation of the aforesaid entia; hence the proposed
blueprint is submitted to be taken advantage of in engineering and
industrial projects including Iran Khodro Corporation.
Abstract: Cryo-electron microscopy (CEM) in combination with
single particle analysis (SPA) is a widely used technique for
elucidating structural details of macromolecular assemblies at closeto-
atomic resolutions. However, development of automated software
for SPA processing is still vital since thousands to millions of
individual particle images need to be processed. Here, we present our
workflow for automated particle picking. Our approach integrates
peak shape analysis to the classical correlation and an iterative
approach to separate macromolecules and background by
classification. This particle selection workflow furthermore provides
a robust means for SPA with little user interaction. Processing
simulated and experimental data assesses performance of the
presented tools.
Abstract: Spam mails are unwanted mails sent to large number
of users. Spam mails not only consume the network resources, but
cause security threats as well. This paper proposes an efficient
technique to detect, and to prevent spam mail in the sender side rather
than the receiver side. This technique is based on a counter set on the
sender server. When a mail is transmitted to the server, the mail server
checks the number of the recipients based on its counter policy. The
counter policy performed by the mail server is based on some
pre-defined criteria. When the number of recipients exceeds the
counter policy, the mail server discontinues the rest of the process, and
sends a failure mail to sender of the mail; otherwise the mail is
transmitted through the network. By using this technique, the usage of
network resources such as bandwidth, and memory is preserved. The
simulation results in real network show that when the counter is set on
the sender side, the time required for spam mail detection is 100 times
faster than the time the counter is set on the receiver side, and the
network resources are preserved largely compared with other
anti-spam mail techniques in the receiver side.
Abstract: Mobile agents are a powerful approach to develop distributed systems since they migrate to hosts on which they have the resources to execute individual tasks. In a dynamic environment like a peer-to-peer network, Agents have to be generated frequently and dispatched to the network. Thus they will certainly consume a certain amount of bandwidth of each link in the network if there are too many agents migration through one or several links at the same time, they will introduce too much transferring overhead to the links eventually, these links will be busy and indirectly block the network traffic, therefore, there is a need of developing routing algorithms that consider about traffic load. In this paper we seek to create cooperation between a probabilistic manner according to the quality measure of the network traffic situation and the agent's migration decision making to the next hop based on decision tree learning algorithms.
Abstract: IPsec has now become a standard information security
technology throughout the Internet society. It provides a well-defined
architecture that takes into account confidentiality, authentication,
integrity, secure key exchange and protection mechanism against
replay attack also. For the connectionless security services on packet
basis, IETF IPsec Working Group has standardized two extension
headers (AH&ESP), key exchange and authentication protocols. It is
also working on lightweight key exchange protocol and MIB's for
security management. IPsec technology has been implemented on
various platforms in IPv4 and IPv6, gradually replacing old
application-specific security mechanisms. IPv4 and IPv6 are not
directly compatible, so programs and systems designed to one
standard can not communicate with those designed to the other. We
propose the design and implementation of controlled Internet security
system, which is IPsec-based Internet information security system in
IPv4/IPv6 network and also we show the data of performance
measurement. With the features like improved scalability and
routing, security, ease-of-configuration, and higher performance of
IPv6, the controlled Internet security system provides consistent
security policy and integrated security management on IPsec-based
Internet security system.
Abstract: Protein-protein interactions (PPI) play a crucial role in many biological processes such as cell signalling, transcription, translation, replication, signal transduction, and drug targeting, etc. Structural information about protein-protein interaction is essential for understanding the molecular mechanisms of these processes. Structures of protein-protein complexes are still difficult to obtain by biophysical methods such as NMR and X-ray crystallography, and therefore protein-protein docking computation is considered an important approach for understanding protein-protein interactions. However, reliable prediction of the protein-protein complexes is still under way. In the past decades, several grid-based docking algorithms based on the Katchalski-Katzir scoring scheme were developed, e.g., FTDock, ZDOCK, HADDOCK, RosettaDock, HEX, etc. However, the success rate of protein-protein docking prediction is still far from ideal. In this work, we first propose a more practical measure for evaluating the success of protein-protein docking predictions, the rate of first success (RFS), which is similar to the concept of mean first passage time (MFPT). Accordingly, we have assessed the ZDOCK bound and unbound benchmarks 2.0 and 3.0. We also createda new benchmark set for protein-protein docking predictions, in which the complexes have experimentally determined binding affinity data. We performed free energy calculation based on the solution of non-linear Poisson-Boltzmann equation (nlPBE) to improve the binding mode prediction. We used the well-studied thebarnase-barstarsystem to validate the parameters for free energy calculations. Besides,thenlPBE-based free energy calculations were conducted for the badly predicted cases by ZDOCK and ZRANK. We found that direct molecular mechanics energetics cannot be used to discriminate the native binding pose from the decoys. Our results indicate that nlPBE-based calculations appeared to be one of the promising approaches for improving the success rate of binding pose predictions.
Abstract: Digital signature is a useful primitive to attain the integrity and authenticity in various wire or wireless communications. Proxy signature is one type of the digital signatures. It helps the proxy signer to sign messages on behalf of the original signer. It is very useful when the original signer (e.g. the president of a company) is not available to sign a specific document. If the original signer can not forge valid proxy signatures through impersonating the proxy signer, it will be robust in a virtual environment; thus the original signer can not shift any illegal action initiated by herself to the proxy signer. In this paper, we propose a new proxy signature scheme. The new scheme can prevent the original signer from impersonating the proxy signer to sign messages. The proposed scheme is based on the regular ElGamal signature. In addition, the fair privacy of the proxy signer is maintained. That means, the privacy of the proxy signer is preserved; and the privacy can be revealed when it is necessary.
Abstract: This paper presents a solution for a robotic
manipulation problem. We formulate the problem as combining
target identification, tracking and interception. The task in our
solution is sensing a target on a conveyor belt and then intercepting
robot-s end-effector at a convenient rendezvous point. We used
an object recognition method which identifies the target and finds
its position from visualized scene picture, then the robot system
generates a solution for rendezvous problem using the target-s initial
position and belt velocity . The interception of the target and the
end-effector is executed at a convenient rendezvous point along the
target-s calculated trajectory. Experimental results are obtained using
a real platform with an industrial robot and a vision system over it.
Abstract: This study investigates the investors- behavioral
reaction to the investment rating change announcements from the
views of behavioral finance. The empirical results indicate that
self-interest does affect the intention of securities firms to release
investment ratings for individual stocks. In addition, behavioral
pitfalls are also found in the response of retail investors to investment
rating change announcements.
Abstract: Bio-electrical responses obtained from freshwater
sediments by employing microbial fuel cell (MFC) technology were
investigated in this experimental study. During the electricity
generation, organic matter in the sediment was microbially oxidized
under anaerobic conditions with an electrode serving as a terminal
electron acceptor. It was found that the sediment organic matter
(SOM) associated with electrochemically-active electrodes became
more humified, aromatic, and polydispersed, and had a higher average
molecular weight, together with the decrease in the quantity of SOM.
The alteration of characteristics of the SOM was analogous to that
commonly observed in the early stage of SOM diagenetic process (i.e.,
humification). These findings including an elevation of the sediment
redox potential present a possibility of the MFC technology as a new
soil/sediment remediation technique based on its potential benefits:
non-destructive electricity generation and bioremediation.
Abstract: Quality of school meals is one of the major concerns of governments and international organizations worldwide. This study aims to evaluate nutritional compliance of meals served at a Portuguese primary school considering the portions stated by Portuguese Education Ministry. To evaluate adequacy of portions served, weighing of all meal components offered to students and leftovers was performed during ten consecutive days at two different moments. Plate waste (%) was calculated by the ratio of food discarded and food served to the children. Nutritional evaluation of menus was made using the Portuguese Food Composition Table. Meals evaluated showed a percent contribution to energetic daily intake higher than recommendations. Meals served to children were considered high energy and protein dense. No significant waste of soup was accounted and the main meal components wasted were fish and vegetables. It will be necessary to adjust portions indicated by Ministry of Education in order to comply with recommendations and reduce food waste.
Abstract: In the current decade, wireless sensor networks are
emerging as a peculiar multi-disciplinary research area. By this
way, energy efficiency is one of the fundamental research themes
in the design of Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols for
wireless sensor networks. Thus, in order to optimize the energy
consumption in these networks, a variety of MAC protocols are
available in the literature. These schemes were commonly evaluated
under simple network density and a few results are published on
their robustness in realistic network-s size. We, in this paper, provide
an analytical study aiming to highlight the energy waste sources in
wireless sensor networks. Then, we experiment three energy efficient
hybrid CSMA/CA based MAC protocols optimized for wireless
sensor networks: Sensor-MAC (SMAC), Time-out MAC (TMAC)
and Traffic aware Energy Efficient MAC (TEEM). We investigate
these protocols with different network densities in order to discuss
the end-to-end performances of these schemes (i.e. in terms of energy
efficiency, delay and throughput). Through Network Simulator (NS-
2) implementations, we explore the behaviors of these protocols with
respect to the network density. In fact, this study may help the multihops
sensor networks designers to design or select the MAC layer
which matches better their applications aims.
Abstract: The most common forensic activity is searching a hard
disk for string of data. Nowadays, investigators and analysts are
increasingly experiencing large, even terabyte sized data sets when
conducting digital investigations. Therefore consecutive searching can
take weeks to complete successfully. There are two primary search
methods: index-based search and bitwise search. Index-based
searching is very fast after the initial indexing but initial indexing
takes a long time. In this paper, we discuss a high speed bitwise search
model for large-scale digital forensic investigations. We used pattern
matching board, which is generally used for network security, to
search for string and complex regular expressions. Our results indicate
that in many cases, the use of pattern matching board can substantially
increase the performance of digital forensic search tools.
Abstract: In this study, a novel approach of image embedding is introduced. The proposed method consists of three main steps. First, the edge of the image is detected using Sobel mask filters. Second, the least significant bit LSB of each pixel is used. Finally, a gray level connectivity is applied using a fuzzy approach and the ASCII code is used for information hiding. The prior bit of the LSB represents the edged image after gray level connectivity, and the remaining six bits represent the original image with very little difference in contrast. The proposed method embeds three images in one image and includes, as a special case of data embedding, information hiding, identifying and authenticating text embedded within the digital images. Image embedding method is considered to be one of the good compression methods, in terms of reserving memory space. Moreover, information hiding within digital image can be used for security information transfer. The creation and extraction of three embedded images, and hiding text information is discussed and illustrated, in the following sections.
