Abstract: In response to widely used wearable medical devices equipped with a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) and insulin pump, the advanced control methods are still demanding to get the full benefit of these devices. Unlike costly clinical trials, implementing effective insulin-glucose control strategies can provide significant contributions to the patients suffering from chronic diseases such as diabetes. This study deals with a key role of two-layer insulin-glucose regulator based on model-predictive-control (MPC) scheme so that the patient’s predicted glucose profile is in compliance with the insulin level injected through insulin pump automatically. It is achieved by iterative optimization algorithm which is called an integrated perturbation analysis and sequential quadratic programming (IPA-SQP) solver for handling uncertainties due to unexpected variations in glucose-insulin values and body’s characteristics. The feasibility evaluation of the discussed control approach is also studied by means of numerical simulations of two case scenarios via measured data. The obtained results are presented to verify the superior and reliable performance of the proposed control scheme with no negative impact on patient safety.
Abstract: Modelling of Timoshenko beams on elastic foundations has been widely used in the analysis of buildings, geotechnical problems, and, railway and aerospace structures. For the elastic foundation, the most widely used models are one-parameter mechanical models or two-parameter models to include continuity and cohesion of typical foundations, with the two-parameter usually considered the better of the two. Knowledge of free vibration characteristics of beams on an elastic foundation is considered necessary for optimal design solutions in many engineering applications, and in this work, the efficient and accurate variational iteration method is developed and used to calculate natural frequencies of a Timoshenko beam on a two-parameter foundation. The variational iteration method is a technique capable of dealing with some linear and non-linear problems in an easy and efficient way. The calculations are compared with those using a finite-element method and other analytical solutions, and it is shown that the results are accurate and are obtained efficiently. It is found that the effect of the presence of the two-parameter foundation is to increase the beam’s natural frequencies and this is thought to be because of the shear-layer stiffness, which has an effect on the elastic stiffness. By setting the two-parameter model’s stiffness parameter to zero, it is possible to obtain a one-parameter foundation model, and so, comparison between the two foundation models is also made.
Abstract: Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) shielded doors made from brass extruded channels need to be welded with shielded enclosures to attain optimum shielding performance. Control of welding induced distortion is a problem in welding dissimilar metals like steel and brass. In this research, soldering of the steel-brass joint has been proposed to avoid weld distortion. The material used for brass channel is UNS C36000. The thickness of brass is defined by the manufacturing process, i.e. extrusion. The thickness of shielded enclosure material (ASTM A36) can be varied to produce joint between the dissimilar metals. Steel sections of different gauges are soldered using (91% tin, 9% zinc) solder to the brass, and strength of joint is measured by standard test procedures. It is observed that thin steel sheets produce a stronger bond with brass. The steel sections further require to be welded with shielded enclosure steel sheets through TIG welding process. Stresses and deformation in the vicinity of soldered portion is calculated through FE simulation. Crack formation in soldered area is also studied through experimental work. It has been found that in thin sheets deformation produced due to applied force is localized and has no effect on soldered joint area whereas in thick sheets profound cracks have been observed in soldered joint. The shielding effectiveness of EMI shielded door is compromised due to these cracks. The shielding effectiveness of the specimens is tested and results are compared.
Abstract: Different uses of land by humans alter the physico chemical characteristics of the soil and affect the soil microhabitat. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of tillage in three different human land uses on microarthropods biodiversity in Khuzestan province, southwest of Iran. Three microhabitats including a permanent grassland with old Date-Palms around and no till system, and two wheat fields, one with conservative agricultural practices and low till system and the other with conventional agricultural practices (deep tillage), were compared for the biodiversity of the two main groups of soil microarthropods (Oribatida and Collembola). Soil samples were collected from the top to a depth of 15 cm bimonthly during a period of two years. Significant differences in the biodiversity index of microarthropods were observed between the different tillage systems (F = 36.748, P =0.000). Indeed, analysis of species diversity showed that the diversity index at the conservative field with low till (2.58 ± 0.01) was higher (p < 0.05) than the conventional tilled field (2.45 ± 0.08) and the diversity of natural grassland was the highest (2.79 ± 0.19, p < 0.05). Indeed, the index of biodiversity and population abundance differed significantly in different seasons (p < 0.00).
Abstract: This paper presents an optimization method based
on genetic algorithm for the energy management inside buildings
developed in the frame of the project Smart Living Lab (SLL)
in Fribourg (Switzerland). This algorithm optimizes the interaction
between renewable energy production, storage systems and energy
consumers. In comparison with standard algorithms, the innovative
aspect of this project is the extension of the smart regulation
over three simultaneous criteria: the energy self-consumption, the
decrease of greenhouse gas emissions and operating costs. The
genetic algorithm approach was chosen due to the large quantity
of optimization variables and the non-linearity of the optimization
function. The optimization process includes also real time data of the
building as well as weather forecast and users habits. This information
is used by a physical model of the building energy resources to predict
the future energy production and needs, to select the best energetic
strategy, to combine production or storage of energy in order to
guarantee the demand of electrical and thermal energy. The principle
of operation of the algorithm as well as typical output example of
the algorithm is presented.
Abstract: Obesity and overweight is one of the most common metabolic disorders in industrialized countries and in developing countries. One consequence of pathological obesity is cardiovascular disease and metabolic syndrome. Chemerin is an adipocyne that plays a role in the regulation of the adipocyte function and the metabolism of glucose in the liver and musculoskeletal system. Most likely, chemerin is involved in obesity-related disorders such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Aerobic exercises reduce the level of chemerin and cause macrophage penetration into fat cells and inflammatory factors. Several efforts have been made to clarify the cellular and molecular mechanisms of hypertrophy and muscular atrophy. Myostatin, a new member of the TGF-β family, is a transforming growth factor β that its expression negatively regulates the growth of the skeletal muscle; and the increase of this hormone has been observed in conditions of muscular atrophy. While in response to muscle overload, its levels decrease after the atrophy period, TGF-β is the most important cytokine in the development of skeletal muscle. Myostatin plays an important role in muscle control, and animal and human studies show a negative role of myostatin in the growth of skeletal muscle. Separation of myostatin from Golgi begins on the ninth day of the onset period and continues until birth at all times of muscle growth. Higher levels of myostatin are found in obese people. Resistance training for 10 weeks could reduce levels of plasma myostatin.
Abstract: An automated fibre placement method has been
developed to build through-thickness reinforcement into carbon fibre
reinforced plastic laminates during their production, with the goal
of increasing delamination fracture toughness while circumventing
the additional costs and defects imposed by post-layup stitching
and z-pinning. Termed ‘inter-weaving’, the method uses custom
placement sequences of thermoset prepreg tows to distribute regular
fibre link regions in traditionally clean ply interfaces. Inter-weaving’s impact on mode I delamination fracture toughness
was evaluated experimentally through double cantilever beam tests
(ASTM standard D5528-13) on [±15°]9 laminates made from Park
Electrochemical Corp. E-752-LT 1/4” carbon fibre prepreg tape.
Unwoven and inter-woven automated fibre placement samples were
compared to those of traditional laminates produced from standard
uni-directional plies of the same material system. Unwoven automated fibre placement laminates were found to
suffer a mostly constant 3.5% decrease in mode I delamination
fracture toughness compared to flat uni-directional plies. Inter-weaving caused significant local fracture toughness increases
(up to 50%), though these were offset by a matching overall
reduction. These positive and negative behaviours of inter-woven
laminates were respectively found to be caused by fibre breakage
and matrix deformation at inter-weave sites, and the 3D layering
of inter-woven ply interfaces providing numerous paths of least
resistance for crack propagation.
Abstract: This paper presents a thirteen-level asymmetrical
cascaded H-bridge single phase inverter. In this configuration, the
desired output voltage level is achieved by connecting the DC sources in
different combinations by triggering the switches. The modes of
operation are explained well for positive level generations. Moreover, a
comparison is made with conventional topologies of diode clamped,
flying capacitors and cascaded-H-bridge and some recently proposed
topologies to show the significance of the proposed topology in terms of
reduced part counts. The simulation work has been carried out in
MATLAB/Simulink environment. The experimental work is also carried
out for lower rating to verify the performance and feasibility of the
proposed topology. Further the results are presented for different loading
conditions.
Abstract: Structural design and analysis is an important and time-consuming process, particularly at the conceptual design stage. Decisions made at this stage can have an enormous effect on the entire project, as it becomes ever costlier and more difficult to alter the choices made early on in the construction process. Hence, optimisation of the early stages of structural design can provide important efficiencies in terms of cost and time. This paper suggests a structural design optimisation (SDO) framework in which Genetic Algorithms (GAs) may be used to semi-automate the production and optimisation of early structural design alternatives. This framework has the potential to leverage conceptual structural design innovation in Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) projects. Moreover, this framework improves the collaboration between the architectural stage and the structural stage. It will be shown that this SDO framework can make this achievable by generating the structural model based on the extracted data from the architectural model. At the moment, the proposed SDO framework is in the process of validation, involving the distribution of an online questionnaire among structural engineers in the UK.
Abstract: Most accidents occur in urban areas, and the most related casualties are vulnerable road users (pedestrians and cyclists). The traffic calming measures (TCMs) are widely used and considered to be successful in reducing speed and traffic volume. However, TCMs create unwanted effects include: noise, emissions, energy consumption, vehicle delays and emergency response time (ERT). Different vertical and horizontal TCMs have been already applied nationally (Sweden) and internationally with different impacts. It is a big challenge among traffic engineers, planners, and policy-makers to choose and priorities the best TCMs to be implemented. This study will assess the existing guidelines for TCMs in relation to safety and ERT with focus on data from Norrkoping city in Sweden. The expected results will save lives, time, and money on particularly Swedish Roads. The study will also review newly technologies and how they can improve safety and reduce ERT.
Abstract: Globular clusters (GC) are important objects for tracing
the early evolution of a galaxy. We study the correlation between the
cluster population and the global properties of the host galaxy. We
found that the correlation between cluster population (NGC) and
the baryonic mass (Mb) of the host galaxy are best described as
10
−5.6038Mb. In order to understand the origin of the U -shape
relation between the GC specific frequency (SN) and Mb (caused
by the high value of SN for dwarfs galaxies and giant ellipticals
and a minimum SN for intermediate mass galaxies≈ 1010M), we
derive a theoretical model for the specific frequency (SNth). The
theoretical model for SNth is based on the slope of the power-law
embedded cluster mass function (β) and different time scale (Δt) of
the forming galaxy. Our results show a good agreement between the
observation and the model at a certain β and Δt. The model seems
able to reproduce higher value of SNth of β = 1.5 at the midst
formation time scale.
Abstract: High-density polyethylene reinforced with carbon nanofibers (HDPE/CNF) have been prepared via melt processing using dialkylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (ionic liquid) as a dispersion agent. The prepared samples were characterized by thermogravimetric (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetric (DSC) analyses. The samples blended with imidazolium ionic liquid exhibit higher thermal stability. DSC analysis showed clear miscibility of ionic liquid in the HDPE matrix and showed single endothermic peak. The melt rheological analysis of HDPE/CNF composites was performed using an oscillatory rheometer. The influence of CNF and ionic liquid concentration (ranging from 0, 0.5, and 1 wt%) on the viscoelastic parameters was investigated at 200 °C with an angular frequency range of 0.1 to 100 rad/s. The rheological analysis shows the shear-thinning behavior for the composites. An improvement in the viscoelastic properties was observed as the nanofiber concentration increases. The progress in the modulus values was attributed to the structural rigidity imparted by the high aspect ratio CNF. The modulus values and complex viscosity of the composites increased significantly at low frequencies. Composites blended with ionic liquid exhibit slightly lower values of complex viscosity and modulus over the corresponding HDPE/CNF compositions. Therefore, reduction in melt viscosity is an additional benefit for polymer composite processing as a result of wetting effect by polymer-ionic liquid combinations.
Abstract: Focus on reducing energy consumption in existing
buildings at large scale, e.g. in cities or countries, has been
increasing in recent years. In order to reduce energy consumption
in existing buildings, political incentive schemes are put in place and
large scale investments are made by utility companies. Prioritising
these investments requires a comprehensive overview of the energy
consumption in the existing building stock, as well as potential
energy-savings. However, a building stock comprises thousands
of buildings with different characteristics making it difficult to
model energy consumption accurately. Moreover, the complexity of
the building stock makes it difficult to convey model results to
policymakers and other stakeholders. In order to manage the complexity of the building stock, building
archetypes are often employed in building stock energy models
(BSEMs). Building archetypes are formed by segmenting the building
stock according to specific characteristics. Segmenting the building
stock according to building type and building age is common, among
other things because this information is often easily available. This
segmentation makes it easy to convey results to non-experts. However, using a single archetypical building to represent all
buildings in a segment of the building stock is associated with
loss of detail. Thermal characteristics are aggregated while other
characteristics, which could affect the energy efficiency of a building,
are disregarded. Thus, using a simplified representation of the
building stock could come at the expense of the accuracy of the
model. The present study evaluates the accuracy of a conventional
archetype-based BSEM that segments the building stock according
to building type- and age. The accuracy is evaluated in terms of the
archetypes’ ability to accurately emulate the average energy demands
of the corresponding buildings they were meant to represent. This is
done for the buildings’ energy demands as a whole as well as for
relevant sub-demands. Both are evaluated in relation to the type- and
the age of the building. This should provide researchers, who use
archetypes in BSEMs, with an indication of the expected accuracy
of the conventional archetype model, as well as the accuracy lost in
specific parts of the calculation, due to use of the archetype method.
Abstract: Knee collateral ligaments play a significant role in restraining excessive frontal motion (varus/valgus rotations). In this investigation, a multiscale frame was developed based on structural hierarchies of the collateral ligaments starting from the bottom (tropocollagen molecule) to up where the fibred reinforced structure established. Experimental data of failure tensile test were considered as the principal driver of the developed model. This model was calibrated statistically using Bayesian calibration due to the high number of unknown parameters. Then the model is scaled up to fit the real structure of the collateral ligaments and simulated under realistic boundary conditions. Predications have been successful in describing the observed transient response of the collateral ligaments during tensile test under pre- and post-damage loading conditions. Collateral ligaments maximum stresses and strengths were observed near to the femoral insertions, a results that is in good agreement with experimental investigations. Also for the first time, damage initiation and propagation were documented with this model as a function of the cross-link density between tropocollagen molecules.
Abstract: In this study, the absorbed dose of human organs after injection of 177Lu-DOTATOC was studied based on the biodistribution of the complex in adenocarcinoma breast cancer bearing mice. For this purpose, the biodistribution of the radiolabelled complex was studied and compartmental modeling was applied to calculate the absorbed dose with high precision. As expected, 177Lu-DOTATOC illustrated a notable specific uptake in tumor and pancreas, organs with high level of somatostatin receptor on their surface and the effectiveness of the radio-conjugate for targeting of the breast adenocarcinoma tumors was indicated. The elicited results of modeling were the exponential equations, and those are utilized for obtaining the cumulated activity data by taking their integral. The results also exemplified that non-target absorbed-doses such as the liver, spleen and pancreas were approximately 0.008, 0.004, and 0.039, respectively. While these values were so much lower than target (tumor) absorbed-dose, it seems due to this low toxicity, this complex is a good agent for therapy.
Abstract: This paper presents parameter estimation of a
single-phase rectifier using extended Kalman filter (EKF). The state
space model has been obtained using Kirchhoff’s current law (KCL)
and Kirchhoff’s voltage law (KVL). The capacitor voltage and diode
current of the circuit have been estimated using EKF. Simulation
results validate the better accuracy of the proposed method as
compared to the least mean square method (LMS). Further, EKF
has the advantage that it can be used for nonlinear systems.
Abstract: Technological and sociological developments in the automotive sector are shifting the focus of design towards developing a better understanding of driver needs, desires and emotions. Human centred design methods are being more frequently applied to automotive research, including the use of systems to detect human emotions in real-time. One method for a non-contact measurement of emotion with low intrusiveness is Facial-Expression Analysis (FEA). This paper describes a research study investigating emotional responses of 22 participants in a naturalistic driving environment by applying a multi-method approach. The research explored the possibility to investigate emotional responses and their frequencies during naturalistic driving through real-time FEA. Observational analysis was conducted to assign causes to the collected emotional responses. In total, 730 emotional responses were measured in the collective study time of 440 minutes. Causes were assigned to 92% of the measured emotional responses. This research establishes and validates a methodology for the study of emotions and their causes in the driving environment through which systems and factors causing positive and negative emotional effects can be identified.
Abstract: What people say on social media has turned into a
rich source of information to understand social behavior. Specifically,
the growing use of Twitter social media for political communication
has arisen high opportunities to know the opinion of large numbers
of politically active individuals in real time and predict the global
political tendencies of a specific country. It has led to an increasing
body of research on this topic. The majority of these studies have
been focused on polarized political contexts characterized by only
two alternatives. Unlike them, this paper tackles the challenge
of forecasting Spanish political trends, characterized by multiple
political parties, by means of analyzing the Twitters Users political
tendency. According to this, a new strategy, named Tweets Analysis
Strategy (TAS), is proposed. This is based on analyzing the users
tweets by means of discovering its sentiment (positive, negative or
neutral) and classifying them according to the political party they
support. From this individual political tendency, the global political
prediction for each political party is calculated. In order to do this,
two different strategies for analyzing the sentiment analysis are
proposed: one is based on Positive and Negative words Matching
(PNM) and the second one is based on a Neural Networks Strategy
(NNS). The complete TAS strategy has been performed in a Big-Data
environment. The experimental results presented in this paper reveal
that NNS strategy performs much better than PNM strategy to analyze
the tweet sentiment. In addition, this research analyzes the viability
of the TAS strategy to obtain the global trend in a political context
make up by multiple parties with an error lower than 23%.
Abstract: Various processes are modelled using a discrete phase,
where particles are seeded from a source. Such particles can represent
liquid water droplets, which are affecting the continuous phase by
exchanging thermal energy, momentum, species etc. Discrete phases
are typically modelled using parcel, which represents a collection of
particles, which share properties such as temperature, velocity etc.
When coupling the phases, the exchange rates are integrated over
the cell, in which the parcel is located. This can cause spikes and
fluctuating exchange rates. This paper presents an alternative method of coupling a discrete
and a continuous plug flow phase. This is done using triangular
parcels, which span between nodes following the dynamics of single
droplets. Thus, the triangular parcels are propagated using the corner
nodes. At each time step, the exchange rates are spatially integrated
over the surface of the triangular parcels, which yields a smooth
continuous exchange rate to the continuous phase. The results shows that the method is more stable, converges
slightly faster and yields smooth exchange rates compared with
the steam tube approach. However, the computational requirements
are about five times greater, so the applicability of the alternative
method should be limited to processes, where the exchange rates are
important. The overall balances of the exchanged properties did not
change significantly using the new approach.
Abstract: In this paper we present a contribution for the modeling and control of wind energy conversion system based on a Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG). Since the wind speed is random the system has to produce an optimal electrical power to the Network and ensures important strength and stability. In this work, the Backstepping controller is used to control the generator via two converter witch placed a DC bus capacitor and connected to the grid by a Filter R-L, in order to optimize capture wind energy. All is simulated and presented under MATLAB/Simulink Software to show performance and robustness of the proposed controller.
