Abstract: In the recent past, there has been an increasing interest
in applying evolutionary methods to Knowledge Discovery in
Databases (KDD) and a number of successful applications of Genetic
Algorithms (GA) and Genetic Programming (GP) to KDD have been
demonstrated. The most predominant representation of the
discovered knowledge is the standard Production Rules (PRs) in the
form If P Then D. The PRs, however, are unable to handle
exceptions and do not exhibit variable precision. The Censored
Production Rules (CPRs), an extension of PRs, were proposed by
Michalski & Winston that exhibit variable precision and supports an
efficient mechanism for handling exceptions. A CPR is an
augmented production rule of the form:
If P Then D Unless C, where C (Censor) is an exception to the rule.
Such rules are employed in situations, in which the conditional
statement 'If P Then D' holds frequently and the assertion C holds
rarely. By using a rule of this type we are free to ignore the exception
conditions, when the resources needed to establish its presence are
tight or there is simply no information available as to whether it
holds or not. Thus, the 'If P Then D' part of the CPR expresses
important information, while the Unless C part acts only as a switch
and changes the polarity of D to ~D.
This paper presents a classification algorithm based on evolutionary
approach that discovers comprehensible rules with exceptions in the
form of CPRs.
The proposed approach has flexible chromosome encoding, where
each chromosome corresponds to a CPR. Appropriate genetic
operators are suggested and a fitness function is proposed that
incorporates the basic constraints on CPRs. Experimental results are
presented to demonstrate the performance of the proposed algorithm.
Abstract: The perfect operation of common Active Filters is depended on accuracy of identification system distortion. Also, using a suitable method in current injection and reactive power compensation, leads to increased filter performance. Due to this fact, this paper presents a method based on predictive current control theory in shunt active filter applications. The harmonics of the load current is identified by using o–d–q reference frame on load current and eliminating the DC part of d–q components. Then, the rest of these components deliver to predictive current controller as a Threephase reference current by using Park inverse transformation. System is modeled in discreet time domain. The proposed method has been tested using MATLAB model for a nonlinear load (with Total Harmonic Distortion=20%). The simulation results indicate that the proposed filter leads to flowing a sinusoidal current (THD=0.15%) through the source. In addition, the results show that the filter tracks the reference current accurately.
Abstract: In this paper, a design methodology to implement low-power and high-speed 2nd order recursive digital Infinite Impulse Response (IIR) filter has been proposed. Since IIR filters suffer from a large number of constant multiplications, the proposed method replaces the constant multiplications by using addition/subtraction and shift operations. The proposed new 6T adder cell is used as the Carry-Save Adder (CSA) to implement addition/subtraction operations in the design of recursive section IIR filter to reduce the propagation delay. Furthermore, high-level algorithms designed for the optimization of the number of CSA blocks are used to reduce the complexity of the IIR filter. The DSCH3 tool is used to generate the schematic of the proposed 6T CSA based shift-adds architecture design and it is analyzed by using Microwind CAD tool to synthesize low-complexity and high-speed IIR filters. The proposed design outperforms in terms of power, propagation delay, area and throughput when compared with MUX-12T, MCIT-7T based CSA adder filter design. It is observed from the experimental results that the proposed 6T based design method can find better IIR filter designs in terms of power and delay than those obtained by using efficient general multipliers.
Abstract: Fundamental motivation of this paper is how gaze estimation can be utilized effectively regarding an application to games. In games, precise estimation is not always important in aiming targets but an ability to move a cursor to an aiming target accurately is also significant. Incidentally, from a game producing point of view, a separate expression of a head movement and gaze movement sometimes becomes advantageous to expressing sense of presence. A case that panning a background image associated with a head movement and moving a cursor according to gaze movement can be a representative example. On the other hand, widely used technique of POG estimation is based on a relative position between a center of corneal reflection of infrared light sources and a center of pupil. However, a calculation of a center of pupil requires relatively complicated image processing, and therefore, a calculation delay is a concern, since to minimize a delay of inputting data is one of the most significant requirements in games. In this paper, a method to estimate a head movement by only using corneal reflections of two infrared light sources in different locations is proposed. Furthermore, a method to control a cursor using gaze movement as well as a head movement is proposed. By using game-like-applications, proposed methods are evaluated and, as a result, a similar performance to conventional methods is confirmed and an aiming control with lower computation power and stressless intuitive operation is obtained.

Abstract: Switched-mode converters play now a significant role in
modern society. Their operation are often crucial in various electrical
applications affecting the every day life. Therefore, the quality of
the converters needs to be reliably verified. Recent studies have
shown that the converters can be fully characterized by a set of
frequency responses which can be efficiently used to validate the
proper operation of the converters. Consequently, several methods
have been proposed to measure the frequency responses fast and
accurately. Most often correlation-based techniques have been applied.
The presented measurement methods are highly sensitive to
external errors and system nonlinearities. This fact has been often
forgotten and the necessary uncertainty analysis of the measured
responses has been neglected. This paper presents a simple approach
to analyze the noise and nonlinearities in the frequency-response
measurements of switched-mode converters. Coherence analysis is
applied to form a confidence interval characterizing the noise and
nonlinearities involved in the measurements. The presented method is
verified by practical measurements from a high-frequency switchedmode
converter.
Abstract: Corrugated wire mesh laminates (CWML) are a class
of engineered open cell structures that have potential for applications
in many areas including aerospace and biomedical engineering. Two
different methods of fabricating corrugated wire mesh laminates from
stainless steel, one using a high temperature Lithobraze alloy and the
other using a low temperature Eutectic solder for joining the
corrugated wire meshes are described herein. Their implementation is
demonstrated by manufacturing CWML samples of 304 and 316
stainless steel (SST). It is seen that due to the facility of employing
wire meshes of different densities and wire diameters, it is possible to
create CWML laminates with a wide range of effective densities. The
fabricated laminates are tested under uniaxial compression. The
variation of the compressive yield strength with relative density of the
CWML is compared to the theory developed by Gibson and Ashby for
open cell structures [22]. It is shown that the compressive strength of
the corrugated wire mesh laminates can be described using the same
equations by using an appropriate value for the linear coefficient in the
Gibson-Ashby model.

Abstract: This paper proposes a Web service and serviceoriented
architecture (SOA) for a computer-adaptive testing (CAT)
process on e-learning systems. The proposed architecture is
developed to solve an interoperability problem of the CAT process by
using Web service. The proposed SOA and Web service define all
services needed for the interactions between systems in order to
deliver items and essential data from Web service to the CAT Webbased
application. These services are implemented in a XML-based
architecture, platform independence and interoperability between the
Web service and CAT Web-based applications.
Abstract: Mobile adhoc network (MANET) is a collection of
mobile devices which form a communication network with no preexisting
wiring or infrastructure. Multiple routing protocols have
been developed for MANETs. As MANETs gain popularity, their
need to support real time applications is growing as well. Such
applications have stringent quality of service (QoS) requirements
such as throughput, end-to-end delay, and energy. Due to dynamic
topology and bandwidth constraint supporting QoS is a challenging
task. QoS aware routing is an important building block for QoS
support. The primary goal of the QoS aware protocol is to determine
the path from source to destination that satisfies the QoS
requirements. This paper proposes a new energy and delay aware
protocol called energy and delay aware TORA (EDTORA) based on
extension of Temporally Ordered Routing Protocol (TORA).Energy
and delay verifications of query packet have been done in each node.
Simulation results show that the proposed protocol has a higher
performance than TORA in terms of network lifetime, packet
delivery ratio and end-to-end delay.
Abstract: For the past one decade, biclustering has become popular data mining technique not only in the field of biological data analysis but also in other applications like text mining, market data analysis with high-dimensional two-way datasets. Biclustering clusters both rows and columns of a dataset simultaneously, as opposed to traditional clustering which clusters either rows or columns of a dataset. It retrieves subgroups of objects that are similar in one subgroup of variables and different in the remaining variables. Firefly Algorithm (FA) is a recently-proposed metaheuristic inspired by the collective behavior of fireflies. This paper provides a preliminary assessment of discrete version of FA (DFA) while coping with the task of mining coherent and large volume bicluster from web usage dataset. The experiments were conducted on two web usage datasets from public dataset repository whereby the performance of FA was compared with that exhibited by other population-based metaheuristic called binary Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). The results achieved demonstrate the usefulness of DFA while tackling the biclustering problem.
Abstract: Facial expression analysis plays a significant role for
human computer interaction. Automatic analysis of human facial

represented as a histogram descriptor. The facial expressions are
recognized using Multiple Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference System
(MANFIS). The proposed system designed and tested with JAFFE
face database. The proposed model reports 94.29% of classification
accuracy.
Abstract: One of the important applications of gas turbines is
their utilization for heat recovery steam generator in combine-cycle technology. Exhaust flow and energy are two key parameters for
determining heat recovery steam generator performance which are mainly determined by the main gas turbine components performance
data. For this reason a method was developed for determining the
exhaust energy in the new edition of ASME PTC22. The result of this investigation shows that the method of standard has considerable
error. Therefore in this paper a new method is presented for modifying of the performance calculation. The modified method is
based on exhaust gas constituent analysis and combustion calculations. The case study presented here by two kind of General
Electric gas turbine design data for validation of methodologies. The
result shows that the modified method is more precise than the ASME PTC22 method. The exhaust flow calculation deviation from
design data is 1.5-2 % by ASME PTC22 method so that the deviation regarding with modified method is 0.3-0.5%. Based on precision of
analyzer instruments, the method can be suitable alternative for gas
turbine standard performance test. In advance two methods are
proposed based on known and unknown fuel in modified method procedure. The result of this paper shows that the difference between
the two methods is below than %0.02. In according to reasonable esult of the second procedure (unknown fuel composition), the
method can be applied to performance evaluation of gas turbine, so that the measuring cost and data gathering should be reduced.

Abstract: The relationship between different types of Molybdenum disulfide greases under extreme pressure loading and different speed situations have been studied using Design of Experiment (DOE) under 1200rpm steady state rotational speed and cyclic frequencies between 2400 and 1200rpm using a Plint machine software to set up the different rotational speed situations.
Research described here is aimed at providing good friction and wear performance while optimizing cyclic frequencies and MoS2 concentration due to the recent concern about grease behavior in extreme pressure applications. Extreme load of 785 Newton was used in conjunction with different cyclic frequencies (2400rpm -3.75min, 1200rpm -7.5min, 2400rpm -3.75min, 1200rpm -7.5min), to examine lithium based grease with and without MoS2 for equal number of revolutions, and a total run of 36000 revolutions; then compared to 1200rpm steady speed for the same total number of revolutions. 4 Ball wear tester was utilized to run large number of experiments randomly selected by the DOE software. The grease was combined with fine grade MoS2 or technical grade then heated to 750C and the wear scar width was collected at the end of each test. DOE model validation results verify that the data were very significant and can be applied to a wide range of extreme pressure applications. Based on simulation results and Scanning Electron images (SEM), it has been found that wear was largely dependent on the cyclic frequency condition. It is believed that technical grade MoS2 greases under faster cyclic speeds perform better and provides antiwear film that can resist extreme pressure loadings. Figures showed reduced wear scars width and improved frictional values.
Abstract: Recognizing human action from videos is an active
field of research in computer vision and pattern recognition. Human
activity recognition has many potential applications such as video
surveillance, human machine interaction, sport videos retrieval and
robot navigation. Actually, local descriptors and bag of visuals words
models achieve state-of-the-art performance for human action
recognition. The main challenge in features description is how to
represent efficiently the local motion information. Most of the
previous works focus on the extension of 2D local descriptors on 3D
ones to describe local information around every interest point. In this
paper, we propose a new spatio-temporal descriptor based on a spacetime
description of moving points. Our description is focused on an
Accordion representation of video which is well-suited to recognize
human action from 2D local descriptors without the need to 3D
extensions. We use the bag of words approach to represent videos.
We quantify 2D local descriptor describing both temporal and spatial
features with a good compromise between computational complexity
and action recognition rates. We have reached impressive results on
publicly available action data set
Abstract: Based on the combined shape feature and texture
feature, a fast object detection method with rotation invariant features
is proposed in this paper. A quick template matching scheme based
online learning designed for online applications is also introduced in
this paper. The experimental results have shown that the proposed
approach has the features of lower computation complexity and
higher detection rate, while keeping almost the same performance
compared to the HOG-based method, and can be more suitable for
run time applications.
Abstract: Iris pattern is an important biological feature of human body; it becomes very hot topic in both research and practical applications. In this paper, an algorithm is proposed for iris recognition and a simple, efficient and fast method is introduced to extract a set of discriminatory features using first order gradient operator applied on grayscale images. The gradient based features are robust, up to certain extents, against the variations may occur in contrast or brightness of iris image samples; the variations are mostly occur due lightening differences and camera changes. At first, the iris region is located, after that it is remapped to a rectangular area of size 360x60 pixels. Also, a new method is proposed for detecting eyelash and eyelid points; it depends on making image statistical analysis, to mark the eyelash and eyelid as a noise points. In order to cover the features localization (variation), the rectangular iris image is partitioned into N overlapped sub-images (blocks); then from each block a set of different average directional gradient densities values is calculated to be used as texture features vector. The applied gradient operators are taken along the horizontal, vertical and diagonal directions. The low order norms of gradient components were used to establish the feature vector. Euclidean distance based classifier was used as a matching metric for determining the degree of similarity between the features vector extracted from the tested iris image and template features vectors stored in the database. Experimental tests were performed using 2639 iris images from CASIA V4-Interival database, the attained recognition accuracy has reached up to 99.92%.

Abstract: Industrial robots become useless without end-effectors
that for many instances are in the form of friction grippers.
Commonly friction grippers apply frictional forces to different
objects on the basis of programmers- experiences. This puts a
limitation on the effectiveness of gripping force that may result in
damaging the object. This paper describes various stages of design
and development of a low cost sensor-based robotic gripper that
would facilitate the task of applying right gripping forces to different
objects. The gripper is also equipped with range sensors in order to
avoid collisions of the gripper with objects. It is a fully functional
automated pick and place gripper which can be used in many
industrial applications. Yet it can also be altered or further developed
in order to suit a larger number of industrial activities. The current
design of gripper could lead to designing completely automated robot
grippers able to improve the efficiency and productivity of industrial
robots.
