Abstract: Road industry has challenged the prospect of ecoconstruction. Pavements may fit within the framework of sustainable development. Hence, research implements assessments of conventional pavements impacts on environment in use of life cycle approach. To meet global, and often national, targets on pollution control, newly introduced pavement designs are under study. This is the case of Cyprus demonstration, which occurred within EcoLanes project work. This alternative pavement differs on concrete layer reinforced with tire recycling product. Processing of post-consumer tires produces steel fibers improving strength capacity against cracking. Thus maintenance works are relevantly limited in comparison to flexible pavement. This enables to be more ecofriendly, referenced to current study outputs. More specific, proposed concrete pavement life cycle processes emits 15 % less air pollutants and consumes 28 % less embodied energy than those of the asphalt pavement. In addition there is also a reduction on costs by 0.06 %.
Abstract: This paper seeks to develop simple yet practical and
efficient control scheme that enables cooperating arms to handle a
flexible beam. Specifically the problem studied herein is that of two
arms rigidly grasping a flexible beam and such capable of generating
forces/moments in such away as to move a flexible beam along a
predefined trajectory. The paper develops a sliding mode control law
that provides robustness against model imperfection and uncertainty.
It also provides an implicit stability proof. Simulation results for two
three joint arms moving a flexible beam, are presented to validate the
theoretical results.
Abstract: Consumer demand for products with low fat or sugar content and low levels of food additives, as well as cost factors, make exopolysaccharides (EPS) a viable alternative. EPS remain an interesting tool to modulate the sensory properties of yoghurt. This study was designed to evaluate EPS production potential of commercial yoghurt starter cultures (Yo-Flex starters: Harmony 1.0, TWIST 1.0 and YF-L902, Chr.Hansen, Denmark) and their influence on an apparent viscosity of yoghurt samples. The production of intracellularly synthesized EPS by different commercial yoghurt starters varies roughly from 144,08 to 440,81 mg/l. Analysing starters’ producing EPS, they showed large variations in concentration and supposedly composition. TWIST 1.0 had produced greater amounts of EPS in MRS medium and in yoghurt samples but there wasn’t determined significant contribution to development of texture as well as an apparent viscosity of the final product. YF-L902 and Harmony 1.0 starters differed considerably in EPS yields, but not in apparent viscosities (p>0.05) of the final yoghurts. Correlation between EPS concentration and viscosity of yoghurt samples was not established in the study.
Abstract: A new genetic algorithm, termed the 'optimum individual monogenetic genetic algorithm' (OIMGA), is presented whose properties have been deliberately designed to be well suited to hardware implementation. Specific design criteria were to ensure fast access to the individuals in the population, to keep the required silicon area for hardware implementation to a minimum and to incorporate flexibility in the structure for the targeting of a range of applications. The first two criteria are met by retaining only the current optimum individual, thereby guaranteeing a small memory requirement that can easily be stored in fast on-chip memory. Also, OIMGA can be easily reconfigured to allow the investigation of problems that normally warrant either large GA populations or individuals many genes in length. Local convergence is achieved in OIMGA by retaining elite individuals, while population diversity is ensured by continually searching for the best individuals in fresh regions of the search space. The results given in this paper demonstrate that both the performance of OIMGA and its convergence time are superior to those of a range of existing hardware GA implementations.
Abstract: A multi-board run-time reconfigurable (MRTR)
system for evolvable hardware (EHW) is introduced with the aim to
implement on hardware the bidirectional incremental evolution (BIE)
method. The main features of this digital intrinsic EHW solution rely
on the multi-board approach, the variable chromosome length
management and the partial configuration of the reconfigurable
circuit. These three features provide a high scalability to the solution.
The design has been written in VHDL with the concern of not being
platform dependant in order to keep a flexibility factor as high as
possible. This solution helps tackling the problem of evolving
complex task on digital configurable support.
Abstract: In Supply Chain Management (SCM), strengthening partnerships with suppliers is a significant factor for enhancing competitiveness. Hence, firms increasingly emphasize supplier evaluation processes. Supplier evaluation systems are basically developed in terms of criteria such as quality, cost, delivery, and flexibility. Because there are many variables to be analyzed, this process becomes hard to execute and needs expertise. On this account, this study aims to develop an expert system on supplier evaluation process by designing Artificial Neural Network (ANN) that is supported with Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA). The methods are applied on the data of 24 suppliers, which have longterm relationships with a medium sized company from German Iron and Steel Industry. The data of suppliers consists of variables such as material quality (MQ), discount of amount (DOA), discount of cash (DOC), payment term (PT), delivery time (DT) and annual revenue (AR). Meanwhile, the efficiency that is generated by using DEA is added to the supplier evaluation system in order to use them as system outputs.
Abstract: Knee joint forces are available by in vivo measurement
using an instrumented knee prosthesis for small to moderate knee
flexion but not for high flexion yet. We created a 2D mathematical
model of the lower limb incorporating several new features such as a
patello-femoral mechanism, a thigh-calf contact at high knee flexion
and co-contracting muscles' force ratio, then used it to determine knee
joint forces arising from high knee flexions in four kneeling
conditions: rising with legs in parallel, with one foot forward, with or
without arm use. With arms used, the maximum values of knee joint
force decreased to about 60% of those with arms not used. When rising
with one foot forward, if arms are not used, the forward leg sustains a
force as large as that sustained when rising with legs parallel.
Abstract: A multivariable discontinuous feedback linearization approach is proposed to position control of an electrically driven fast robot manipulator. A desired performance is achieved by selecting a useful controller and suitable sampling rate and considering saturation for actuators. There is a high flexibility to apply the proposed control approach on different electrically driven manipulators. The control approach can guarantee the stability and satisfactory tracking performance. A PUMA 560 robot driven by geared permanent magnet dc motors is simulated. The simulation results show a desired performance for control system under technical specifications.
Abstract: This research explorers the relationship between leadership style and continuous improvement (CI) teams. CI teams have several features that are not always found in other types of teams, including multi-functional members, short time period for performance, positive and actionable results, and exposure to senior leadership. There is no one best style of leadership for these teams. Instead, it is important to select the best leadership style for the situation. The leader must have the flexibility to change styles and the skill to use the chosen style effectively in order to ensure the team’s success.
Abstract: This paper proposes the concept of aerocapture with
aerodynamic-environment-adaptive variable geometry flexible
aeroshell that vehicle deploys. The flexible membrane is composed
of thin-layer film or textile as its aeroshell in order to solve some
problems obstructing realization of aerocapture technique.
Multi-objective optimization study is conducted to investigate
solutions and derive design guidelines. As a result, solutions which
can avoid aerodynamic heating and enlarge the corridor width up
to 10% are obtained successfully, so that the effectiveness of this
concept can be demonstrated. The deformation-use optimum
solution changes its drag coefficient from 1.6 to 1.1, along with the
change in dynamic pressure. Moreover, optimization results show
that deformation-use solution requires the membrane for which
upper temperature limit and strain limit are more than 700 K and
120%, respectively, and elasticity (Young-s modulus) is of order of
106 Pa.
Abstract: This paper argues that networks, such as the ECN and the American network, are affected by certain small events which are inherent to path dependence and preclude the full evolution towards efficiency. It is advocated that the American network is superior to the ECN in many respects due to its greater flexibility and longer history. This stems in particular from the creation of the American network, which was based on a small number of cases. Such a structure encourages further changes and modifications which are not necessarily radical. The ECN, by contrast, was established by legislative action, which explains its rigid structure and resistance to change. This paper is an attempt to transpose the superiority of the American network on to the ECN. It looks at concepts such as judicial cooperation, harmonisation of procedure, peer review and regulatory impact assessments (RIAs), and dispute resolution procedures.
Abstract: Topics Disaster and Emergency Management are highly debated among experts. Fast communication will help to deal with emergencies. Problem is with the network connection and data exchange. The paper suggests a solution, which allows possibilities and perspectives of new flexible communication platform to the protection of communication systems for crisis management. This platform is used for everyday communication and communication in crisis situations too.
Abstract: In this study, we propose a network architecture for
providing secure access to information resources of enterprise
network from remote locations in a wireless fashion. Our proposed
architecture offers a very promising solution for organizations which
are in need of a secure, flexible and cost-effective remote access
methodology. Security of the proposed architecture is based on
Virtual Private Network technology and a special role based access
control mechanism with location and time constraints. The flexibility
mainly comes from the use of Internet as the communication medium
and cost-effectiveness is due to the possibility of in-house
implementation of the proposed architecture.
Abstract: This paper presents modeling and optimization of two NP-hard problems in flexible manufacturing system (FMS), part type selection problem and loading problem. Due to the complexity and extent of the problems, the paper was split into two parts. The first part of the papers has discussed the modeling of the problems and showed how the real coded genetic algorithms (RCGA) can be applied to solve the problems. This second part discusses the effectiveness of the RCGA which uses an array of real numbers as chromosome representation. The novel proposed chromosome representation produces only feasible solutions which minimize a computational time needed by GA to push its population toward feasible search space or repair infeasible chromosomes. The proposed RCGA improves the FMS performance by considering two objectives, maximizing system throughput and maintaining the balance of the system (minimizing system unbalance). The resulted objective values are compared to the optimum values produced by branch-and-bound method. The experiments show that the proposed RCGA could reach near optimum solutions in a reasonable amount of time.
Abstract: Active Vibration Control (AVC) is an important
problem in structures. One of the ways to tackle this problem is to
make the structure smart, adaptive and self-controlling. The objective
of active vibration control is to reduce the vibration of a system by
automatic modification of the system-s structural response. This
paper features the modeling and design of a Periodic Output
Feedback (POF) control technique for the active vibration control of
a flexible Timoshenko cantilever beam for a multivariable case with
2 inputs and 2 outputs by retaining the first 2 dominant vibratory
modes using the smart structure concept. The entire structure is
modeled in state space form using the concept of piezoelectric
theory, Timoshenko beam theory, Finite Element Method (FEM) and
the state space techniques. Simulations are performed in MATLAB.
The effect of placing the sensor / actuator at 2 finite element
locations along the length of the beam is observed. The open loop
responses, closed loop responses and the tip displacements with and
without the controller are obtained and the performance of the smart
system is evaluated for active vibration control.
Abstract: The e-government emerging concept transforms the
way in which the citizens are dealing with their governments. Thus,
the citizens can execute the intended services online anytime and
anywhere. This results in great benefits for both the governments
(reduces the number of officers) and the citizens (more flexibility and
time saving). Therefore, building a maturity model to assess the egovernment
portals becomes desired to help in the improvement
process of such portals. This paper aims at proposing an egovernment
maturity model based on the measurement of the best
practices’ presence. The main benefit of such maturity model is to
provide a way to rank an e-government portal based on the used best
practices, and also giving a set of recommendations to go to the
higher stage in the maturity model.
Abstract: Novel acrylated epoxidized hemp oil (AEHO) based
bioresins were successfully synthesised, characterized and applied to
biocomposites reinforced with woven jute fibre. Characterisation of
the synthesised AEHO consisted of acid number titrations and FTIR
spectroscopy to assess the success of the acrylation reaction. Three
different matrices were produced (vinylester (VE), 50/50 blend of
AEHO/VE and 100% AEHO) and reinforced with jute fibre to form
three different types of biocomposite samples. Mechanical properties
in the form of flexural and interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) were
investigated and compared for the different samples. Results from the
mechanical tests showed that AEHO and 50/50 based neat bioresins
displayed lower flexural properties compared with the VE samples.
However when applied to biocomposites and compared with VE
based samples, AEHO biocomposites demonstrated comparable
flexural performance and improved ILSS. These results are attributed
to improved fibre-matrix interfacial adhesion due to surface-chemical
compatibility between the natural fibres and bioresin.
Abstract: In the past years, the world has witnessed significant work in the field of Manufacturing. Special efforts have been made in the implementation of new technologies, management and control systems, among many others which have all evolved the field. Closely following all this, due to the scope of new projects and the need of turning the existing flexible ideas into more autonomous and intelligent ones, i.e.: moving toward a more intelligent manufacturing, the present paper emerges with the main aim of contributing to the analysis and a few customization issues of a new iCIM 3000 system at the IPSAM. In this process, special emphasis in made on the material flow problem. For this, besides offering a description and analysis of the system and its main parts, also some tips on how to define other possible alternative material flow scenarios and a partial analysis of the combinatorial nature of the problem are offered as well. All this is done with the intentions of relating it with the use of simulation tools, for which these have been briefly addressed with a special focus on the Witness simulation package. For a better comprehension, the previous elements are supported by a few figures and expressions which would help obtaining necessary data. Such data and others will be used in the future, when simulating the scenarios in the search of the best material flow configurations.

Abstract: The performance of schedules released to a shop floor may greatly be affected by unexpected disruptions. Thus, this paper considers the flexible job shop scheduling problem when processing times of some operations are represented by a uniform distribution with given lower and upper bounds. The objective is to find a predictive schedule that can deal with this uncertainty. The paper compares two genetic approaches to obtain predictive schedule. To determine the performance of the predictive schedules obtained by both approaches, an experimental study is conducted on a number of benchmark problems.
