Abstract: This paper presents a generalized formulation for the
problem of buckling optimization of anisotropic, radially graded,
thin-walled, long cylinders subject to external hydrostatic pressure.
The main structure to be analyzed is built of multi-angle fibrous
laminated composite lay-ups having different volume fractions of the
constituent materials within the individual plies. This yield to a
piecewise grading of the material in the radial direction; that is the
physical and mechanical properties of the composite material are
allowed to vary radially. The objective function is measured by
maximizing the critical buckling pressure while preserving the total
structural mass at a constant value equals to that of a baseline
reference design. In the selection of the significant optimization
variables, the fiber volume fractions adjoin the standard design
variables including fiber orientation angles and ply thicknesses. The
mathematical formulation employs the classical lamination theory,
where an analytical solution that accounts for the effective axial and
flexural stiffness separately as well as the inclusion of the coupling
stiffness terms is presented. The proposed model deals with
dimensionless quantities in order to be valid for thin shells having
arbitrary thickness-to-radius ratios. The critical buckling pressure
level curves augmented with the mass equality constraint are given
for several types of cylinders showing the functional dependence of
the constrained objective function on the selected design variables. It
was shown that material grading can have significant contribution to
the whole optimization process in achieving the required structural
designs with enhanced stability limits.
Abstract: This paper presents a new approach for image
segmentation by applying Pillar-Kmeans algorithm. This
segmentation process includes a new mechanism for clustering the
elements of high-resolution images in order to improve precision and
reduce computation time. The system applies K-means clustering to
the image segmentation after optimized by Pillar Algorithm. The
Pillar algorithm considers the pillars- placement which should be
located as far as possible from each other to withstand against the
pressure distribution of a roof, as identical to the number of centroids
amongst the data distribution. This algorithm is able to optimize the
K-means clustering for image segmentation in aspects of precision
and computation time. It designates the initial centroids- positions
by calculating the accumulated distance metric between each data
point and all previous centroids, and then selects data points which
have the maximum distance as new initial centroids. This algorithm
distributes all initial centroids according to the maximum
accumulated distance metric. This paper evaluates the proposed
approach for image segmentation by comparing with K-means and
Gaussian Mixture Model algorithm and involving RGB, HSV, HSL
and CIELAB color spaces. The experimental results clarify the
effectiveness of our approach to improve the segmentation quality in
aspects of precision and computational time.
Abstract: This paper addresses the stability of the switched systems with discrete and distributed time delays. By applying Lyapunov functional and function method, we show that, if the norm of system matrices Bi is small enough, the asymptotic stability is always achieved. Finally, a example is provided to verify technically feasibility and operability of the developed results.
Abstract: Thermoelastic temperature, displacement, and
stress in heat transfer during laser surface hardening are solved
in Eulerian formulation. In Eulerian formulations the heat flux
is fixed in space and the workpiece is moved through a control
volume. In the case of uniform velocity and uniform heat flux
distribution, the Eulerian formulations leads to a steady-state
problem, while the Lagrangian formulations remains transient.
In Eulerian formulations the reduction to a steady-state
problem increases the computational efficiency. In this study
also an analytical solution is developed for an uncoupled
transient heat conduction equation in which a plane slab is
heated by a laser beam. The thermal result of the numerical
model is compared with the result of this analytical model.
Comparing the results shows numerical solution for uncoupled
equations are in good agreement with the analytical solution.
Abstract: Whilst there is growing evidence that activity
across the lifespan is beneficial for improved health, there are
also many changes involved with the aging process and
subsequently the potential for reduced indices of health. The
nexus between health, physical activity and aging is complex
and has raised much interest in recent times due to the
realization that a multifaceted approached is necessary in
order to counteract a growing obesity epidemic. By
investigating age based trends within a population adhering to
competitive sport at older ages, further insight might be
gleaned to assist in understanding one of many factors
influencing this relationship.
BMI was derived using data gathered on a total of 6,071
masters athletes (51.9% male, 48.1% female) aged 25 to 91
years ( =51.5, s =±9.7), competing at the Sydney World
Masters Games (2009). Using linear and loess regression it
was demonstrated that the usual tendency for prevalence of
higher BMI increasing with age was reversed in the sample.
This trend in reversal was repeated for both male and female
only sub-sets of the sample participants, indicating the
possibility of improved prevalence of BMI with increasing
age for both the sample as a whole and these individual subgroups.
This evidence of improved classification in one index of
health (reduced BMI) for masters athletes (when compared to
the general population) implies there are either improved
levels of this index of health with aging due to adherence to
sport or possibly the reduced BMI is advantageous and
contributes to this cohort adhering (or being attracted) to
masters sport at older ages. Demonstration of this
proportionately under-investigated World Masters Games
population having an improved relationship between BMI and
increasing age over the general population is of particular
interest in the context of the measures being taken globally to
curb an obesity epidemic.
Abstract: Phase-Contrast MR imaging methods are widely used
for measurement of blood flow velocity components. Also there are
some other tools such as CT and Ultrasound for velocity map
detection in intravascular studies. These data are used in deriving
flow characteristics. Some clinical applications are investigated
which use pressure distribution in diagnosis of intravascular disorders
such as vascular stenosis. In this paper an approach to the problem of
measurement of intravascular pressure field by using velocity field
obtained from flow images is proposed. The method presented in this
paper uses an algorithm to calculate nonlinear equations of Navier-
Stokes, assuming blood as an incompressible and Newtonian fluid.
Flow images usually suffer the lack of spatial resolution. Our
attempt is to consider the effect of spatial resolution on the pressure
distribution estimated from this method. In order to achieve this aim,
velocity map of a numerical phantom is derived at six different
spatial resolutions. To determine the effects of vascular stenoses on
pressure distribution, a stenotic phantom geometry is considered. A
comparison between the pressure distribution obtained from the
phantom and the pressure resulted from the algorithm is presented. In
this regard we also compared the effects of collocated and staggered
computational grids on the pressure distribution resulted from this
algorithm.
Abstract: The present study presents a new approach to automatic
data clustering and classification problems in large and complex
databases and, at the same time, derives specific types of explicit rules
describing each cluster. The method works well in both sparse and
dense multidimensional data spaces. The members of the data space
can be of the same nature or represent different classes. A number
of N-dimensional ellipsoids are used for enclosing the data clouds.
Due to the geometry of an ellipsoid and its free rotation in space
the detection of clusters becomes very efficient. The method is based
on genetic algorithms that are used for the optimization of location,
orientation and geometric characteristics of the hyper-ellipsoids. The
proposed approach can serve as a basis for the development of
general knowledge systems for discovering hidden knowledge and
unexpected patterns and rules in various large databases.
Abstract: This paper investigates the problem of designing a robust state-feedback controller for a class of uncertain Markovian jump nonlinear systems that guarantees the L2-gain from an exogenous input to a regulated output is less than or equal to a prescribed value. First, we approximate this class of uncertain Markovian jump nonlinear systems by a class of uncertain Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy models with Markovian jumps. Then, based on an LMI approach, LMI-based sufficient conditions for the uncertain Markovian jump nonlinear systems to have an H performance are derived. An illustrative example is used to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed design techniques.
Abstract: Grid environments include aggregation of
geographical distributed resources. Grid is put forward in three types
of computational, data and storage. This paper presents a research on
data grid. Data grid is used for covering and securing accessibility to
data from among many heterogeneous sources. Users are not worry
on the place where data is located in it, provided that, they should get
access to the data. Metadata is used for getting access to data in data
grid. Presently, application metadata catalogue and SRB middle-ware
package are used in data grids for management of metadata. At this
paper, possibility of updating, streamlining and searching is provided
simultaneously and rapidly through classified table of preserving
metadata and conversion of each table to numerous tables.
Meanwhile, with regard to the specific application, the most
appropriate and best division is set and determined. Concurrency of
implementation of some of requests and execution of pipeline is
adaptability as a result of this technique.
Abstract: Fecal sterol has been proposed as a chemical indicator
of human fecal pollution even when fecal coliform populations have
diminished due to water chlorination or toxic effects of industrial
effluents. This paper describes an improved derivatization procedure
for simultaneous determination of four fecal sterols including
coprostanol, epicholestanol, cholesterol and cholestanol using gas
chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), via optimization study
on silylation procedures using N-O-bis
(trimethylsilyl)-trifluoroacetamide (BSTFA), and
N-(tert-butyldimethylsilyl)-N-methyltrifluoroacetamide
(MTBSTFA), which lead to the formation of trimethylsilyl (TMS) and
tert-butyldimethylsilyl (TBS) derivatives, respectively. Two
derivatization processes of injection-port derivatization and water bath
derivatization (60 oC, 1h) were inspected and compared. Furthermore,
the methylation procedure at 25 oC for 2h with
trimethylsilydiazomethane (TMSD) for fecal sterols analysis was also
studied. It was found that most of TMS derivatives demonstrated the
highest sensitivities, followed by methylated derivatives. For BSTFA
or MTBSTFA derivatization processes, the simple injection-port
derivatization process could achieve the same efficiency as that in the
tedious water bath derivatization procedure.
Abstract: The prediction of Software quality during development life cycle of software project helps the development organization to make efficient use of available resource to produce the product of highest quality. “Whether a module is faulty or not" approach can be used to predict quality of a software module. There are numbers of software quality prediction models described in the literature based upon genetic algorithms, artificial neural network and other data mining algorithms. One of the promising aspects for quality prediction is based on clustering techniques. Most quality prediction models that are based on clustering techniques make use of K-means, Mixture-of-Guassians, Self-Organizing Map, Neural Gas and fuzzy K-means algorithm for prediction. In all these techniques a predefined structure is required that is number of neurons or clusters should be known before we start clustering process. But in case of Growing Neural Gas there is no need of predetermining the quantity of neurons and the topology of the structure to be used and it starts with a minimal neurons structure that is incremented during training until it reaches a maximum number user defined limits for clusters. Hence, in this work we have used Growing Neural Gas as underlying cluster algorithm that produces the initial set of labeled cluster from training data set and thereafter this set of clusters is used to predict the quality of test data set of software modules. The best testing results shows 80% accuracy in evaluating the quality of software modules. Hence, the proposed technique can be used by programmers in evaluating the quality of modules during software development.
Abstract: This paper presents a time control liquids mixing
system in the tanks as an application of fuzzy time control discrete
model. The system is designed for a wide range of industrial
applications. The simulation design of control system has three
inputs: volume, viscosity, and selection of product, along with the
three external control adjustments for the system calibration or to
take over the control of the system autonomously in local or
distributed environment. There are four controlling elements: rotatory
motor, grinding motor, heating and cooling units, and valves
selection, each with time frame limit. The system consists of three
controlled variables measurement through its sensing mechanism for
feed back control. This design also facilitates the liquids mixing
system to grind certain materials in tanks and mix with fluids under
required temperature controlled environment to achieve certain
viscous level. Design of: fuzzifier, inference engine, rule base,
deffuzifiers, and discrete event control system, is discussed. Time
control fuzzy rules are formulated, applied and tested using
MATLAB simulation for the system.
Abstract: Installation of power compensation equipment in
some cases places additional buses into the system. Therefore, a total
number of power flow equations and voltage unknowns increase due
to additional locations of installed devices. In this circumstance, power flow calculation is more complicated. It may result in a
computational convergence problem. This paper presents a power flow calculation by using Newton-Raphson iterative method together
with the proposed load transfer technique. This concept is to eliminate additional buses by transferring installed loads at the new buses to existing two adjacent buses. Thus, the total number of power
flow equations is not changed. The overall computational speed is
expectedly shorter than that of solving the problem without applying the load transfer technique. A 15-bus test system is employed for test
to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed load transfer technique. As a result, the total number of iteration required and execution time
is significantly reduced.
Abstract: The major aim of this paper is to investigate the opposition politics in Africa. The paper also examines the status and the role, the contributions and the weaknesses of opposition1 political parties in Africa, particularly in transitional democracies that emerged in the 1990s. In Africa, many of the opposition parties appear or become active only during an election, and disappear when the election is over. It is found out that most of the opposition parties in Africa are established around the personalities of individuals, lack internal democracy, suffer from inter-party and intra-party conflicts, have severe shortage of finance, and lack strong base and experience. Their weaknesses also include bad organization and weak connection with the popular constituencies. The paper concludes that most of the weaknesses of the African opposition parties emanate from the incumbents- hostile policies, which are mostly aimed at fragmenting and weakening the opposition groups.
Abstract: Flour from Mucuna beans (Mucuna pruriens) were
used in producing texturized meat analogue using a single screw
extruder to monitor modifications on the proximate composition and
the functional properties at high moisture level. Response surface
methodology based on Box Behnken design at three levels of barrel
temperature (110, 120, 130°C), screw speed (100,120,140rpm) and
feed moisture (44, 47, 50%) were used in 17 runs. Regression models
describing the effect of variables on the product responses were
obtained. Descriptive profile analyses and consumer acceptability
test were carried out on optimized flavoured extruded meat analogue.
Responses were mostly affected by barrel temperature and moisture
level and to a lesser extent by screw speed. Optimization results
based on desirability concept indicated that a barrel temperature of
120.15°C, feed moisture of 47% and screw speed of 119.19 rpm
would produce meat analogue of preferable proximate composition,
functional and sensory properties which reveals consumers` likeness
for the product.
Abstract: The study investigated the 2011 TPGA Ever Rich
Championship – North Bay Open spectators- on-the-site spectating
motivations, experiences, and satisfactions. The research was
conducted on a convenience sample of the on-the-spot spectators at the
North Bay Golf and Country Club. A total of 200 questionnaires were
distributed, of which 185 valid questionnaires were collected,
approaching a 92.5% response rate. The data obtained was analyzed
with statistical techniques. First, the data showed significant
differences in motivations, experiences, and satisfactions relative to
demographic variables among the on-the-spot spectators. Second,
spectating motivation, experience, and satisfaction were significantly
related to one another.
Abstract: Interest in Human Consciousness has been revived in the late 20th century from different scientific disciplines. Consciousness studies involve both its understanding and its application. In this paper, a computational model of the minimum consciousness functions necessary in my point of view for Artificial Intelligence applications is presented with the aim of improving the way computations will be made in the future. In section I, human consciousness is briefly described according to the scope of this paper. In section II, a minimum set of consciousness functions is defined - based on the literature reviewed - to be modelled, and then a computational model of these functions is presented in section III. In section IV, an analysis of the model is carried out to describe its functioning in detail.
Abstract: We report on the development of a model to
understand why the range of experience with respect to HIV
infection is so diverse, especially with respect to the latency period.
To investigate this, an agent-based approach is used to extract highlevel
behaviour which cannot be described analytically from the set
of interaction rules at the cellular level. A network of independent
matrices mimics the chain of lymph nodes. Dealing with massively
multi-agent systems requires major computational effort. However,
parallelisation methods are a natural consequence and advantage of
the multi-agent approach and, using the MPI library, are here
implemented, tested and optimized. Our current focus is on the
various implementations of the data transfer across the network.
Three communications strategies are proposed and tested, showing
that the most efficient approach is communication based on the
natural lymph-network connectivity.
Abstract: When a high DC voltage is applied to a capacitor with
strongly asymmetrical electrodes, it generates a mechanical force that
affects the whole capacitor. This is caused by the motion of ions generated around the smaller of the two electrodes and their subsequent interaction with the surrounding medium. If one of the electrodes is heated, it changes the conditions around the capacitor
and influences the process of ionisation, thus changing the value of the generated force. This paper describes these changes and gives
reasons behind them. Further the experimental results are given as proof of the ionic mechanism of the phenomenon.
Abstract: The paper presents dynamic programming based model as a planning tool for the maintenance of electric power systems. Every distribution component has an exponential age depending reliability function to model the fault risk. In the moment of time when the fault costs exceed the investment costs of the new component the reinvestment of the component should be made. However, in some cases the overhauling of the old component may be more economical than the reinvestment. The comparison between overhauling and reinvestment is made by optimisation process. The goal of the optimisation process is to find the cost minimising maintenance program for electric power distribution system.
