Abstract: In the effort to reduce water consumption for resorts,
more water conservation practices need to be implemented. Hence
water audits need to be performed to obtain a baseline of water
consumption, before planning water conservation practices. In this
study, a water audit framework specifically for resorts was created,
and the audit was performed on two resorts: Resort A in Langkawi,
Malaysia; and Resort B in Miri, Malaysia. From the audit, the total
daily water consumption for Resorts A and B were estimated to be
180m3 and 330 m3 respectively, while the actual water consumption
(based on water meter readings) were 175 m3 and 325 m3. This
suggests that the audit framework is reasonably accurate and may be
used to account for most of the water consumption sources in a
resort. The daily water consumption per guest is about 500 litres. The
water consumption of both resorts is poorly rated compared with
established benchmarks. Water conservation measures were
suggested for both resorts.
Abstract: Trends in business intelligence, e-commerce and
remote access make it necessary and practical to store data in
different ways on multiple systems with different operating systems.
As business evolve and grow, they require efficient computerized
solution to perform data update and to access data from diverse
enterprise business applications. The objective of this paper is to
demonstrate the capability of DTS [1] as a database solution for
automatic data transfer and update in solving business problem. This
DTS package is developed for the sales of variety of plants and
eventually expanded into commercial supply and landscaping
business. Dimension data modeling is used in DTS package to
extract, transform and load data from heterogeneous database
systems such as MySQL, Microsoft Access and Oracle that
consolidates into a Data Mart residing in SQL Server. Hence, the
data transfer from various databases is scheduled to run automatically
every quarter of the year to review the efficient sales analysis.
Therefore, DTS is absolutely an attractive solution for automatic data
transfer and update which meeting today-s business needs.
Abstract: Potatoes are a good source of carotenoids, which are lipophilic compounds synthesized in plastids from isoprenoids. The aim of this research was to determine the content of carotenoids in relationship with the colour of organically and conventionally cultivated potato genotypes before and after period of storage. In cooperation with the State Priekuli Plant Breeding Institute (Latvia), six potato genotypes were studied: 'Agrie dzeltenie', 'Prelma', 'Imanta', 'S-03135-10', 'S-99108-8' and 'S-01063-5'. All the genotypes were cultivated under three different conditions: organically and conventionally (two conditions). The content of carotenoids was determined by using spectrophotometer and the colour – L*a*b* system. The results of current research show that after the period of storage, carotenoid amount has increased and in conventionally cultivated potatoes it varies from 228.514 to 552.434 μg 100 g-1 while in organically cultivated potato genotypes – from 45.485 to 662.699 μg 100 g-1 FW. Colour of potato flesh was changing during storage.
Abstract: Flow through micro and mini channels requires relatively
high driving pressure due to the large fluid pressure drop
through these channels. Consequently the forces acting on the walls of
the channel due to the fluid pressure are also large. Due to these forces
there are displacement fields set up in the solid substrate containing
the channels. If the movement of the substrate is constrained at some
points, then stress fields are established in the substrate. On the other
hand, if the deformation of the channel shape is sufficiently large
then its effect on the fluid flow is important to be calculated. Such
coupled fluid-solid systems form a class of problems known as fluidstructure
interactions. In the present work a co-located finite volume
discretization procedure on unstructured meshes is described for
solving fluid-structure interaction type of problems. A linear elastic
solid is assumed for which the effect of the channel deformation
on the flow is neglected. Thus the governing equations for the
fluid and the solid are decoupled and are solved separately. The
procedure is validated by solving two benchmark problems, one from
fluid mechanics and another from solid mechanics. A fluid-structure
interaction problem of flow through a U-shaped channel embedded
in a plate is solved.
Abstract: The advances in location-based data collection
technologies such as GPS, RFID etc. and the rapid reduction of their
costs provide us with a huge and continuously increasing amount of
data about movement of vehicles, people and goods in an urban area.
This explosive growth of geospatially-referenced data has far
outpaced the planner-s ability to utilize and transform the data into
insightful information thus creating an adverse impact on the return
on the investment made to collect and manage this data. Addressing
this pressing need, we designed and developed DIVAD, a dynamic
and interactive visual analytics dashboard to allow city planners to
explore and analyze city-s transportation data to gain valuable
insights about city-s traffic flow and transportation requirements. We
demonstrate the potential of DIVAD through the use of interactive
choropleth and hexagon binning maps to explore and analyze large
taxi-transportation data of Singapore for different geographic and
time zones.
Abstract: Tumor cells have an invasive and metastatic phenotype
that is the main cause of death for cancer patients. Tumor
establishment and penetration consists of a series of complex
processes involving multiple changes in gene expression. In this study,
intraperitoneal administration of a high concentration of ascorbic acid
inhibited tumor establishment and decreased tumor mass in BALB/C
mice implanted with S-180 sarcoma cancer cells. To identify proteins
involved in the ascorbic acid-mediated inhibition of tumor
progression, changes in the tumor proteome associated with ascorbic
acid treatment of BALB/C mice implanted with S-180 were
investigated using two-dimensional gel electrophoresis and mass
spectrometry. Twenty protein spots were identified whose expression
was different between control and ascorbic acid treatment groups.
Abstract: In this paper, the effects of the restoring force device on the response of a space frame structure resting on sliding type of bearing with a restoring force device is studied. The NS component of the El - Centro earthquake and harmonic ground acceleration is considered for earthquake excitation. The structure is modeled by considering six-degrees of freedom (three translations and three rotations) at each node. The sliding support is modeled as a fictitious spring with two horizontal degrees of freedom. The response quantities considered for the study are the top floor acceleration, base shear, bending moment and base displacement. It is concluded from the study that the displacement of the structure reduces by the use of the restoring force device. Also, the peak values of acceleration, bending moment and base shear also decreases. The simulation results show the effectiveness of the developed and proposed method.
Abstract: A cart-ball system is a challenging system from the
control engineering point of view. This is due to the nonlinearities,
multivariable, and non-minimum phase behavior present in this
system. This paper is concerned with the problem of modeling and
control of such system. The objective of control strategy is to place
the cart at a desired position while balancing the ball on the top of the
arc-shaped track fixed on the cart. A State-Feedback Controller
(SFC) with a pole-placement method will be designed in order to
control the system. At first, the mathematical model of a cart-ball
system in the state-space form is developed. Then, the linearization of
a model will be established in order to design a SFC. The integral
control strategy will be performed as to control the cart position of a
system. Simulation work is then performed using
MATLAB/SIMULINK software in order to study the performance of
SFC when applied to the system.
Abstract: The cables in a nuclear power plant are designed to be
used for about 40 years in safe operation environment. However, the
heat and radiation in the nuclear power plant causes the rapid
performance deterioration of cables in nuclear vessels and heat
exchangers, which requires cable lifetime estimation. The most
accurate method of estimating the cable lifetime is to evaluate the
cables in a laboratory. However, removing cables while the plant is
operating is not allowed because of its safety and cost. In this paper, a
robot system to estimate the cable lifetime in nuclear power plants is
developed and tested. The developed robot system can calculate a
modulus value to estimate the cable lifetime even when the nuclear
power plant is in operation.
Abstract: Modeling and simulation of biochemical reactions is of great interest in the context of system biology. The central dogma of this re-emerging area states that it is system dynamics and organizing principles of complex biological phenomena that give rise to functioning and function of cells. Cell functions, such as growth, division, differentiation and apoptosis are temporal processes, that can be understood if they are treated as dynamic systems. System biology focuses on an understanding of functional activity from a system-wide perspective and, consequently, it is defined by two hey questions: (i) how do the components within a cell interact, so as to bring about its structure and functioning? (ii) How do cells interact, so as to develop and maintain higher levels of organization and functions? In recent years, wet-lab biologists embraced mathematical modeling and simulation as two essential means toward answering the above questions. The credo of dynamics system theory is that the behavior of a biological system is given by the temporal evolution of its state. Our understanding of the time behavior of a biological system can be measured by the extent to which a simulation mimics the real behavior of that system. Deviations of a simulation indicate either limitations or errors in our knowledge. The aim of this paper is to summarize and review the main conceptual frameworks in which models of biochemical networks can be developed. In particular, we review the stochastic molecular modelling approaches, by reporting the principal conceptualizations suggested by A. A. Markov, P. Langevin, A. Fokker, M. Planck, D. T. Gillespie, N. G. van Kampfen, and recently by D. Wilkinson, O. Wolkenhauer, P. S. Jöberg and by the author.
Abstract: This paper describes about the process of recognition and classification of brain images such as normal and abnormal based on PSO-SVM. Image Classification is becoming more important for medical diagnosis process. In medical area especially for diagnosis the abnormality of the patient is classified, which plays a great role for the doctors to diagnosis the patient according to the severeness of the diseases. In case of DICOM images it is very tough for optimal recognition and early detection of diseases. Our work focuses on recognition and classification of DICOM image based on collective approach of digital image processing. For optimal recognition and classification Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Support Vector Machine (SVM) are used. The collective approach by using PSO-SVM gives high approximation capability and much faster convergence.
Abstract: The article presents test results on the changes
occurring in sewage sludge during the process of its storage. Tests
were conducted on mechanically dehydrated sewage sludge derived
from large municipal sewage treatment plants equipped with
biological sewage treatment systems. In testing presented in the paper
the focus was on the basic fuel properties of sewage sludge: moisture
content, heat of combustion, carbon share. In the first part of the
article the overview of the issues concerning the sewage sludge
management is presented and the genesis of tests is explained.
Further in the paper, selected results of conducted tests are discussed.
Changes in tested parameters were determined in the period of a 10-
month sewage storage.
Abstract: The equilibrium chemical reactions taken place in a converter reactor of the Khorasan Petrochemical Ammonia plant was studied using the minimization of Gibbs free energy method. In the minimization of the Gibbs free energy function the Davidon– Fletcher–Powell (DFP) optimization procedure using the penalty terms in the well-defined objective function was used. It should be noted that in the DFP procedure along with the corresponding penalty terms the Hessian matrices for the composition of constituents in the Converter reactor can be excluded. This, in fact, can be considered as the main advantage of the DFP optimization procedure. Also the effect of temperature and pressure on the equilibrium composition of the constituents was investigated. The results obtained in this work were compared with the data collected from the converter reactor of the Khorasan Petrochemical Ammonia plant. It was concluded that the results obtained from the method used in this work are in good agreement with the industrial data. Notably, the algorithm developed in this work, in spite of its simplicity, takes the advantage of short computation and convergence time.
Abstract: We introduce, a new interactive 3D simulation system of ocular motion and expressions suitable for: (1) character animation applications to game design, film production, HCI (Human Computer Interface), conversational animated agents, and virtual reality; (2) medical applications (ophthalmic neurological and muscular pathologies: research and education); and (3) real time simulation of unconscious cognitive and emotional responses (for use, e.g., in psychological research). The system is comprised of: (1) a physiologically accurate parameterized 3D model of the eyes, eyelids, and eyebrow regions; and (2) a prototype device for realtime control of eye motions and expressions, including unconsciously produced expressions, for application as in (1), (2), and (3) above. The 3D eye simulation system, created using state-of-the-art computer animation technology and 'optimized' for use with an interactive and web deliverable platform, is, to our knowledge, the most advanced/realistic available so far for applications to character animation and medical pedagogy.
Abstract: In this paper we present a system for classifying videos
by frequency spectra. Many videos contain activities with repeating
movements. Sports videos, home improvement videos, or videos
showing mechanical motion are some example areas. Motion of these
areas usually repeats with a certain main frequency and several side
frequencies. Transforming repeating motion to its frequency domain
via FFT reveals these frequencies. Average amplitudes of frequency
intervals can be seen as features of cyclic motion. Hence determining
these features can help to classify videos with repeating movements.
In this paper we explain how to compute frequency spectra for video
clips and how to use them for classifying. Our approach utilizes series
of image moments as a function. This function again is transformed
into its frequency domain.
Abstract: A numerical investigation of surface heat transfer
characteristics of turbulent air flows in different parallel plate
grooved channels is performed using CFD code. The results are
obtained for Reynolds number ranging from 10,000 to 30,000 and for
arc-shaped and rectangular grooved channels. The influence of
different geometric parameters of dimples as well as the number of
them and the geometric and thermophysical properties of channel
walls are studied. It is found that there exists an optimum value for
depth of dimples in which the largest wall heat flux can be achieved.
Also, the results show a critical value for the ratio of wall thermal
conductivity to the one of fluid in which the dependence of wall heat
flux to this ratio almost vanishes. In most cases examined, heat
transfer enhancement is larger for arc-shaped grooved channels than
rectangular ones.
Abstract: This paper aims at to develop a robust optimization methodology for the mechatronic modules of machine tools by considering all important characteristics from all structural and control domains in one single process. The relationship between these two domains is strongly coupled. In order to reduce the disturbance caused by parameters in either one, the mechanical and controller design domains need to be integrated. Therefore, the concurrent integrated design method Design For Control (DFC), will be employed in this paper. In this connect, it is not only applied to achieve minimal power consumption but also enhance structural performance and system response at same time. To investigate the method for integrated optimization, a mechatronic feed drive system of the machine tools is used as a design platform. Pro/Engineer and AnSys are first used to build the 3D model to analyze and design structure parameters such as elastic deformation, nature frequency and component size, based on their effects and sensitivities to the structure. In addition, the robust controller,based on Quantitative Feedback Theory (QFT), will be applied to determine proper control parameters for the controller. Therefore, overall physical properties of the machine tool will be obtained in the initial stage. Finally, the technology of design for control will be carried out to modify the structural and control parameters to achieve overall system performance. Hence, the corresponding productivity is expected to be greatly improved.
Abstract: In order to study the effect of plant density and
competition of wheat with field bindweed (Convolvulus arvensis) on
yield and agronomical properties of wheat(Triticum Sativum) in
irrigated conditions, a factorial experiment as the base of complete
randomize block design in three replication was conducted at the
field of Kamalvand in khoramabad (Lorestan) region of Iran during
2008-2009. Three plant density (Factor A=200, 230 and 260kg/ha)
three cultivar (Factor B=Bahar,Pishtaz and Alvand) and weed control
(Factor C= control and no control of weeds)were assigned in
experiment. Results show that: Plant density had significant effect
(statistically) on seed yield, 1000 seed weight, weed density and dry
weight of weeds, seed yield and harvest index had been meaningful
effect for cultivars. The interaction between plant density and
cultivars for weed density, seed yield, thousand seed weight and
harvest index were significant. 260 kg/ha (plant density) of wheat had
more effect on increasing of seed yield in Bahar cultivar wheat in
khoramabad region of Iran.
Abstract: There has been a strong link between computermediated education and constructivism learning and teaching theory.. Acknowledging how well the constructivism doctrine would work online, it has been established that constructivist views of learning would agreeably correlate with the philosophy of open and distance learning. Asynchronous and synchronous communications have placed online learning on the right track of a constructive learning path. This paper is written based on the social constructivist framework, where knowledge is constructed from social communication and interaction. The study explores the possibility of practicing this theory through incorporating online discussion in the syllabus and the ways it can be implemented to contribute to young people-s personality and social development by addressing some aspects that may contribute to the social problem such as prejudice, ignorance and intolerance.
Abstract: This paper presents a sensing system for 3D sensing
and mapping by a tracked mobile robot with an arm-type sensor
movable unit and a laser range finder (LRF). The arm-type sensor
movable unit is mounted on the robot and the LRF is installed at the
end of the unit. This system enables the sensor to change position and
orientation so that it avoids occlusions according to terrain by this
mechanism. This sensing system is also able to change the height of
the LRF by keeping its orientation flat for efficient sensing. In this kind
of mapping, it may be difficult for moving robot to apply mapping
algorithms such as the iterative closest point (ICP) because sets of the
2D data at each sensor height may be distant in a common surface. In
order for this kind of mapping, the authors therefore applied
interpolation to generate plausible model data for ICP. The results of
several experiments provided validity of these kinds of sensing and
mapping in this sensing system.
