Abstract: This study involves a numerical simulation of the flow around a NACA2415 airfoil, with a 15°angle of attack, and flow separation control using a rod, It reposes inputting a cylindrical rod upstream of the leading edge in order to accelerate the transition of the boundary layer by interaction between the rod wake and the boundary layer. The viscous, non-stationary flow is simulated using ANSYS FLUENT 13. Our results showed a substantial modification in the flow behavior and a maximum drag reduction of 51%.
Abstract: The unsteady flow field around oscillating OA-209 airfoil at a Reynolds number of 3.5×105 were investigated. Three different reduced frequencies were tested in order to see how it affects the hysteresis loop of an airfoil. At a reduced frequency of 0.05 the deep dynamic stall phenomenon was observed. Lift overshooting was observed as a result of dynamic stall vortex (DSV) shedding. Further investigation was carried out to find out the cause of DSV formation and shedding over airfoil. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) and CFD tools were used and it was found out that dynamic stall separation (DSS), which is separated from leading edge separation (LES) and trailing edge separation (TES), triggered the dynamic stall vortex (DSV).
Abstract: The construction of a civil structure inside a urban
area inevitably modifies the outdoor microclimate at the building
site. Wind speed, wind direction, air pollution, driving rain, radiation
and daylight are some of the main physical aspects that are subjected
to the major changes. The quantitative amount of these modifications
depends on the shape, size and orientation of the building and on its
interaction with the surrounding environment.The flow field over a
flat roof model building has been numerically investigated in order to
determine two-dimensional CFD guidelines for the calculation of the
turbulent flow over a structure immersed in an atmospheric boundary
layer. To this purpose, a complete validation campaign has been
performed through a systematic comparison of numerical simulations
with wind tunnel experimental data.Several turbulence models and
spatial node distributions have been tested for five different vertical
positions, respectively from the upstream leading edge to the
downstream bottom edge of the analyzed model. Flow field
characteristics in the neighborhood of the building model have been
numerically investigated, allowing a quantification of the capabilities
of the CFD code to predict the flow separation and the extension of
the recirculation regions.The proposed calculations have allowed the
development of a preliminary procedure to be used as a guidance in
selecting the appropriate grid configuration and corresponding
turbulence model for the prediction of the flow field over a twodimensional
roof architecture dominated by flow separation.
Abstract: Channel junctions can be analyzed in two ways of
division (lateral intake) and combined flows (confluence). The
present paper investigates 3D flow pattern at lateral intake using
Navier-Stokes equation and κ -ε (RNG) turbulent model. The
equations are solved by Finite-Volume Method (FVM) and results
are compared with the experimental data of (Barkdoll, B.D., 1997)
to test the validity of the findings. Comparison of the results with
the experimental data indicated a close proximity between the two
sets of data which suggest a very close simulation. Results further
indicated an inverse relation between the effects of discharge ratio
( r Q ) on the length and width of the separation zone. In other words,
as the discharge ration increases, the length and width of separation
zone decreases.

Abstract: Aircraft propulsion systems often use Y-shaped
subsonic diffusing ducts as twin air-intakes to supply the ambient air
into the engine compressor for thrust generation. Due to space
constraint, the diffusers need to be curved, which causes severe flow
non-uniformity at the engine face. The present study attempt to
control flow in a mild-curved Y-duct diffuser using trapezoidalshaped
vortex generators (VG) attached on either both the sidewalls
or top and bottom walls of the diffuser at the inflexion plane. A
commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code is modified
and is used to simulate the effects of SVG in flow of a Y-duct
diffuser. A few experiments are conducted for CFD code validation,
while the rest are done computationally. The best combination of Yduct
diffuser is found with VG-2 arranged in co-rotating sequence
and attached to both the sidewalls, which ensures highest static
pressure recovery, lowest total pressure loss, minimum flow
distortion and less flow separation in Y-duct diffuser. The decrease in
VG height while attached to top and bottom walls further improves
axial flow uniformity at the diffuser outlet by a great margin as
compared to the bare duct.
Abstract: Vortex-shedding phenomenon of the flow
around combined two bodies having various geometries and sizes has been investigated experimentally in the Reynolds
number range between 4.1x103 and 1.75x104. To see the effect
of the rotation of the bodies on the vortex shedding, the
combined bodies were rotated from 0° to 180°. The combined models have a cross section composing of a main circular cylinder and an attached circular or square cylinder. Results
have shown that Strouhal numbers for two cases were
changed considerably with the angle of incidence, while it was found to be largely independent of Reynolds number at 150. Characteristics of the vortex formation region and
location of flow attachments, reattachments, and separations
were observed by means of the flow visualizations.
Depending on the inclination angle the effects of flow
attachment, separation and reattachment on vortex-shedding phenomenon have been discussed.
Abstract: Generally flow behavior in centrifugal fan is observed
to be in a state of instability with flow separation zones on suction
surface as well as near the front shroud. Overall performance of the
diffusion process in a centrifugal fan could be enhanced by
judiciously introducing the boundary layer suction slots. With easy
accessibility of CFD as an analytical tool, an extensive numerical
whole field analysis of the effect of boundary layer suction slots in
discrete regions of suspected separation points is possible. This paper
attempts to explore the effect of boundary layer suction slots
corresponding to various geometrical locations on the impeller with
converging configurations for the slots. The analysis shows that the
converging suction slots located on the impeller blade about 25%
from the trailing edge, significantly improves the static pressure
recovery across the fan. Also it is found that Slots provided at a
radial distance of about 12% from the leading and trailing edges
marginally improve the static pressure recovery across the fan.
Abstract: This article presents a numerical study of the doublediffusive
mixed convection in a vertical channel filled with porous
medium by using non-equilibrium model. The flow is assumed
fully developed, uni-directional and steady state. The controlling
parameters are thermal Rayleigh number (RaT ), Darcy number (Da),
Forchheimer number (F), buoyancy ratio (N), inter phase heat transfer
coefficient (H), and porosity scaled thermal conductivity ratio
(γ). The Brinkman-extended non-Darcy model is considered. The
governing equations are solved by spectral collocation method. The
main emphasize is given on flow profiles as well as heat and solute
transfer rates, when two diffusive components in terms of buoyancy
ratio are in favor (against) of each other and solid matrix and fluid
are thermally non-equilibrium. The results show that, for aiding flow
(RaT = 1000), the heat transfer rate of fluid (Nuf ) increases upto a
certain value of H, beyond that decreases smoothly and converges
to a constant, whereas in case of opposing flow (RaT = -1000),
the result is same for N = 0 and 1. The variation of Nuf in (N,
Nuf )-plane shows sinusoidal pattern for RaT = -1000. For both cases
(aiding and opposing) the flow destabilize on increasing N by inviting
point of inflection or flow separation on the velocity profile. Overall,
the buoyancy force have significant impact on the non-Darcy mixed
convection under LTNE conditions.
Abstract: This paper analytically investigates the 3D flow
pattern at the confluences of two rectangular channels having 900
angles using Navier-Stokes equations based on Reynolds Stress
Turbulence Model (RSM). The equations are solved by the Finite-
Volume Method (FVM) and the flow is analyzed in terms of steadystate
(single-phased) conditions. The Shumate experimental findings
were used to test the validity of data. Comparison of the simulation
model with the experimental ones indicated a close proximity
between the flow patterns of the two sets. Effects of the discharge
ratio on separation zone dimensions created in the main-channel
downstream of the confluence indicated an inverse relation, where a
decrease in discharge ratio, will entail an increase in the length and
width of the separation zone. The study also found the model as a
powerful analytical tool in the feasibility study of hydraulic
engineering projects.
Abstract: The parametrical study of Shrouded Contra-rotating
Rotor was done in this paper based on 2D axisymmetric simulations.
The calculations were made with an actuator disk as double rotor
model. It objects to explore and quantify the effects of different shroud
geometry parameters mainly using the performance of power loading
(PL), which could evaluate the whole propulsion system capability as
5 Newtontotal thrust generationfor hover demand. The numerical
results show that:The increase of nozzle radius is desired but limited
by the flow separation, its optimal design is around 1.15 times rotor
radius, the viscosity effects greatly constraint the influence of nozzle
shape, the divergent angle around 10.5° performs best for chosen
nozzle length;The parameters of inlet such as leading edge curvature,
radius and internal shape do not affect thrust great but play an
important role in pressure distribution which could produce most part
of shroud thrust, they should be chosen according to the reduction of
adverse pressure gradients to reduce the risk of boundary separation.
Abstract: Cardiovascular diseases, principally atherosclerosis, are responsible for 30% of world deaths. Atherosclerosis is due to the formation of plaque. The fatty plaque may be at risk of rupture, leading typically to stroke and heart attack. The plaque is usually associated with a high degree of lumen reduction, called a stenosis.It is increasingly recognized that the initiation and progression of disease and the occurrence of clinical events is a complex interplay between the local biomechanical environment and the local vascular biology. The aim of this study is to investigate the flow behavior through a stenosed artery. A physical experiment was performed using an artery model and blood analogue fluid. An axisymmetric model constructed consists of contraction and expansion region that follow a mathematical form of cosine function. A 30% diameter reduction was used in this study. The flow field was measured using particle image velocimetry (PIV). Spherical particles with 20μm diameter were seeded in a water-glycerol-NaCl mixture. Steady flow Reynolds numbers are 250. The area of interest is the region after the stenosis where the flow separation occurs. The velocity field was measured and the velocity gradient was investigated. There was high particle concentration in the recirculation zone. High velocity gradient formed immediately after the stenosis throat created a lift force that enhanced particle migration to the flow separation area.
Abstract: Heat source addition to the axisymmetric supersonic
inlet may improve the performance parameters, which will increase
the inlet efficiency. In this investigation the heat has been added to
the flow field at some distance ahead of an axisymmetric inlet by
adding an imaginary thermal source upstream of cowl lip. The effect
of heat addition on the drag coefficient, mass flow rate and the
overall efficiency of the inlet have been investigated. The results
show that heat addition causes flow separation, hence to prevent this
phenomena, roughness has been added on the spike surface.
However, heat addition reduces the drag coefficient and the inlet
mass flow rate considerably. Furthermore, the effects of position,
size, and shape on the inlet performance were studied. It is found that
the thermal source deflects the flow streamlines. By improper
location of the thermal source, the optimum condition has been
obtained. For the optimum condition, the drag coefficient is
considerably reduced and the inlet mass flow rate and its efficiency
have been increased slightly. The optimum shape of the heat source
is obtained too.
Abstract: The flow field in a centrifugal fan is highly complex
with flow reversal taking place on the suction side of impeller and
diffuser vanes. Generally performance of the centrifugal fan could be
enhanced by judiciously introducing splitter vanes so as to improve
the diffusion process. An extensive numerical whole field analysis on
the effect of splitter vanes placed in discrete regions of suspected
separation points is possible using CFD. This paper examines the
effect of splitter vanes corresponding to various geometrical
locations on the impeller and diffuser. The analysis shows that the
splitter vanes located near the diffuser exit improves the static
pressure recovery across the diffusing domain to a larger extent. Also
it is found that splitter vanes located at the impeller trailing edge and
diffuser leading edge at the mid-span of the circumferential distance
between the blades show a marginal improvement in the static
pressure recovery across the fan. However, splitters provided near to
the suction side of the impeller trailing edge (25% of the
circumferential gap between the impeller blades towards the suction
side), adversely affect the static pressure recovery of the fan.
