Abstract: Modeling of Panel Zone (PZ) seismic behavior,
because of its role in overall ductility and lateral stiffness of steel
moment frames, has been considered a challenge for years. There are
some studies regarding the effects of different doubler plates
thicknesses and geometric properties of PZ on its seismic behavior.
However, there is not much investigation on the effects of number of
provided continuity plates in case of presence of one triangular
haunch, two triangular haunches and rectangular haunch (T shape
haunches) for exterior columns. In this research first detailed finite
element models of 12tested connection of SAC joint venture were
created and analyzed then obtained cyclic behavior backbone curves
of these models besides other FE models for similar tests were used
for neural network training. Then seismic behavior of these data is
categorized according to continuity plate-s arrangements and
differences in type of haunches. PZ with one-sided haunches have
little plastic rotation. As the number of continuity plates increases
due to presence of two triangular haunches (four continuity plate),
there will be no plastic rotation, in other words PZ behaves in its
elastic range. In the case of rectangular haunch, PZ show more plastic
rotation in comparison with one-sided triangular haunch and
especially double-sided triangular haunches. Moreover, the models
that will be presented in case of triangular one-sided and double-
sided haunches and rectangular haunches as a result of this study
seem to have a proper estimation of PZ seismic behavior.
Abstract: Solidification cracking and hydrogen cracking are some defects generated in the fusion welding of ultrahigh carbon steels. However, friction stir welding (FSW) of such steels, being a solid-state technique, has been demonstrated to alleviate such problems encountered in traditional welding. FSW include different process parameters that must be carefully defined prior processing. These parameters included but not restricted to: tool feed, tool RPM, tool geometry, tool tilt angle. These parameters form a key factor behind avoiding warm holes and voids behind the tool and in achieving a defect-free weld. More importantly, these parameters directly affect the microstructure of the weld and hence the final mechanical properties of weld. For that, 3D finite element (FE) thermo-mechanical model was developed using DEFORM 3D to simulate FSW of carbon steel. At points of interest in the joint, tracking is done for history of critical state variables such as temperature, stresses, and strain rates. Typical results found include the ability to simulate different weld zones. Simulations predictions were successfully compared to experimental FSW tests. It is believed that such a numerical model can be used to optimize FSW processing parameters to favor desirable defect free weld with better mechanical properties.
Abstract: The Platform Screen Doors improve Indoor Air Quality
(IAQ) in the subway station; however, and the air quality is degraded
in the subway tunnel. CO2 concentration and indoor particulate matter
value are high in the tunnel. The IAQ level in subway tunnel degrades
by increasing the train movements. Air-curtain installation reduces
dusts, particles and moving toxic smokes and permits traffic by
generating virtual wall. The ventilation systems of the subway tunnel
need improvements to have better air-quality. Numerical analyses
might be effective tools analyze the flowfield inside the air-curtain
installed subway tunnel. The ANSYS CFX software is used for steady
computations of the airflow inside the tunnel. The single-track subway
tunnel has the natural shaft, the mechanical shaft, and the PSDs
installed stations. The height and width of the tunnel are 6.0 m and 4.0
m respectively. The tunnel is 400 m long and the air-curtain is installed
at the top of the tunnel. The thickness and the width of the air-curtain
are 0.08 m and 4 m respectively. The velocity of the air-curtain
changes between 20 - 30 m/s. Three cases are analyzed depending on
the installing location of the air-curtain. The discharged-air through
the natural shafts increases as the velocity of the air-curtain increases
when the air-curtain is installed between the mechanical and the
natural shafts. The pollutant-air is exhausted by the mechanical and the
natural shafts and remained air is pushed toward tunnel end. The
discharged-air through the natural shaft is low when the air-curtain
installed before the natural shaft. The mass flow rate decreases in the
tunnel after the mechanical shaft as the air-curtain velocity increases.
The computational results of the air-curtain installed tunnel become
basis for the optimum design study. The air-curtain installing location
is chosen between the mechanical and the natural shafts. The velocity
of the air-curtain is fixed as 25 m/s. The thickness and the blowing
angles of the air-curtain are the design variables for the optimum
design study. The object function of the design optimization is
maximizing the discharged air through the natural shaft.
Abstract: Cement stabilization has been widely used for
improving the strength and stiffness of soft clayey soils. Cement
treated soil specimens used to investigate the stress-strain behaviour in
the laboratory study are usually cured for 7 days. This paper examines
the effects of curing time on the strength and stress strain behaviour of
cement treated marine clay under triaxial loading condition.
Laboratory-prepared cement treated Singapore marine clay with
different mix proportion S-C-W (soil solid-cement solid-water) and
curing time (7 days to 180 days) was investigated through conducting
unconfined compressive strength test and triaxial test. The results
show that the curing time has a significant effect on the unconfined
compressive strength u q , isotropic compression behaviour and stress
strain behaviour. Although the primary yield loci of the cement treated
soil specimens with the same mix proportion expand with curing time,
they are very narrowly banded and have nearly the same shape after
being normalized by isotropic compression primary stress '
py p . The
isotropic compression primary yield stress '
py p was shown to be
linearly related to unconfined compressive strength u q for specimens
with different curing time and mix proportion. The effect of curing
time on the hardening behaviour will diminish with consolidation
stress higher than isotropic compression primary yield stress but its
damping rate is dependent on the cement content.
Abstract: As wireless sensor networks are energy constraint networks
so energy efficiency of sensor nodes is the main design issue.
Clustering of nodes is an energy efficient approach. It prolongs the
lifetime of wireless sensor networks by avoiding long distance communication.
Clustering algorithms operate in rounds. Performance of
clustering algorithm depends upon the round time. A large round
time consumes more energy of cluster heads while a small round
time causes frequent re-clustering. So existing clustering algorithms
apply a trade off to round time and calculate it from the initial
parameters of networks. But it is not appropriate to use initial
parameters based round time value throughout the network lifetime
because wireless sensor networks are dynamic in nature (nodes can be
added to the network or some nodes go out of energy). In this paper
a variable round time approach is proposed that calculates round
time depending upon the number of active nodes remaining in the
field. The proposed approach makes the clustering algorithm adaptive
to network dynamics. For simulation the approach is implemented
with LEACH in NS-2 and the results show that there is 6% increase
in network lifetime, 7% increase in 50% node death time and 5%
improvement over the data units gathered at the base station.
Abstract: Gasoline Octane Number is the standard measure of
the anti-knock properties of a motor in platforming processes, that is
one of the important unit operations for oil refineries and can be
determined with online measurement or use CFR (Cooperative Fuel
Research) engines. Online measurements of the Octane number can
be done using direct octane number analyzers, that it is too
expensive, so we have to find feasible analyzer, like ANFIS
estimators.
ANFIS is the systems that neural network incorporated in fuzzy
systems, using data automatically by learning algorithms of NNs.
ANFIS constructs an input-output mapping based both on human
knowledge and on generated input-output data pairs.
In this research, 31 industrial data sets are used (21 data for training
and the rest of the data used for generalization). Results show that,
according to this simulation, hybrid method training algorithm in
ANFIS has good agreements between industrial data and simulated
results.
Abstract: In order to calculate the flexural strength of
normal-strength concrete (NSC) beams, the nonlinear actual concrete
stress distribution within the compression zone is normally replaced
by an equivalent rectangular stress block, with two coefficients of α
and β to regulate the intensity and depth of the equivalent stress
respectively. For NSC beams design, α and β are usually assumed
constant as 0.85 and 0.80 in reinforced concrete (RC) codes. From an
earlier investigation of the authors, α is not a constant but significantly
affected by flexural strain gradient, and increases with the increasing
of strain gradient till a maximum value. It indicates that larger
concrete stress can be developed in flexure than that stipulated by
design codes. As an extension and application of the authors- previous
study, the modified equivalent concrete stress block is used here to
produce a series of design charts showing the maximum design limits
of flexural strength and ductility of singly- and doubly- NSC beams,
through which both strength and ductility design limits are improved
by taking into account strain gradient effect.
Abstract: In this paper, a clustering algorithm named KHarmonic
means (KHM) was employed in the training of Radial
Basis Function Networks (RBFNs). KHM organized the data in
clusters and determined the centres of the basis function. The popular
clustering algorithms, namely K-means (KM) and Fuzzy c-means
(FCM), are highly dependent on the initial identification of elements
that represent the cluster well. In KHM, the problem can be avoided.
This leads to improvement in the classification performance when
compared to other clustering algorithms. A comparison of the
classification accuracy was performed between KM, FCM and KHM.
The classification performance is based on the benchmark data sets:
Iris Plant, Diabetes and Breast Cancer. RBFN training with the KHM
algorithm shows better accuracy in classification problem.
Abstract: Application of wood in rural construction is diffused
all around the world since remote times. However, its inclusion in
structural design deserves strong support from broad knowledge of
material properties. The pertinent literature reveals the application of
optical methods in determining the complete field displacement on
bodies exhibiting regular as well as irregular surfaces. The use of
moiré techniques in experimental mechanics consists in analyzing the
patterns generated on the body surface before and after deformation.
The objective of this research work is to study the qualitative
deformation behavior of wooden testing specimens under specific
loading situations. The experiment setup follows the literature
description of shadow moiré methods. Results indicate strong
anisotropy influence of the generated displacement field. Important
qualitative as well as quantitative stress and strain distribution were
obtained wooden members which are applicable to rural
constructions.
Abstract: This paper presents a semi-supervised learning algorithm called Iterative-Cross Training (ICT) to solve the Web pages classification problems. We apply Inductive logic programming (ILP) as a strong learner in ICT. The objective of this research is to evaluate the potential of the strong learner in order to boost the performance of the weak learner of ICT. We compare the result with the supervised Naive Bayes, which is the well-known algorithm for the text classification problem. The performance of our learning algorithm is also compare with other semi-supervised learning algorithms which are Co-Training and EM. The experimental results show that ICT algorithm outperforms those algorithms and the performance of the weak learner can be enhanced by ILP system.
Abstract: In the traditional theory of non-uniform torsion the
axial displacement field is expressed as the product of the unit twist
angle and the warping function. The first one, variable along the
beam axis, is obtained by a global congruence condition; the second
one, instead, defined over the cross-section, is determined by solving
a Neumann problem associated to the Laplace equation, as well as for
the uniform torsion problem.
So, as in the classical theory the warping function doesn-t punctually
satisfy the first indefinite equilibrium equation, the principal aim of
this work is to develop a new theory for non-uniform torsion of
beams with axial symmetric cross-section, fully restrained on both
ends and loaded by a constant torque, that permits to punctually
satisfy the previous equation, by means of a trigonometric expansion
of the axial displacement and unit twist angle functions.
Furthermore, as the classical theory is generally applied with good
results to the global and local analysis of ship structures, two beams
having the first one an open profile, the second one a closed section,
have been analyzed, in order to compare the two theories.
Abstract: This paper undertakes the problem of optimal
capacitor placement in a distribution system. The problem is how to
optimally determine the locations to install capacitors, the types and
sizes of capacitors to he installed and, during each load level, the
control settings of these capacitors in order that a desired objective
function is minimized while the load constraints, network constraints
and operational constraints (e.g. voltage profile) at different load
levels are satisfied. The problem is formulated as a combinatorial
optimization problem with a nondifferentiable objective function.
Four solution mythologies based on algorithms (GA),tabu search
(TS), and hybrid GA-SA algorithms are presented. The solution
methodologies are preceded by a sensitivity analysis to select the
candidate capacitor installation locations.
Abstract: The paper proposes an approach for design of modular
systems based on original technique for modeling and formulation of
combinatorial optimization problems. The proposed approach is
described on the example of personal computer configuration design.
It takes into account the existing compatibility restrictions between
the modules and can be extended and modified to reflect different
functional and users- requirements. The developed design modeling
technique is used to formulate single objective nonlinear mixedinteger
optimization tasks. The practical applicability of the
developed approach is numerically tested on the basis of real modules
data. Solutions of the formulated optimization tasks define the
optimal configuration of the system that satisfies all compatibility
restrictions and user requirements.
Abstract: The objectives of this study are to determine the role of media that influence the values, attitudes and behaviors of Thai youths. Analytical qualitative research techniques were used for this purpose. Data collection based techniques was used which were individual interviews and focus group discussions with journalists, sample of high school and university students, and parents. The results show that “Social Media" is still the most popular media for Thai youths. It is also still in the hands of the marketing business and it can motivate Thai youths to do so many things. The main reasons of media exposure are to find quality information that they want quickly, get satisfaction and can use social media to get more exciting and to build communities. They believe that the need for media and information literacy skills is defined as making judgments, personal integrity, training of family and the behavior of close friends.
Abstract: In the present study, position estimation of switched reluctance motor (SRM) has been achieved on the basis of the artificial neural networks (ANNs). The ANNs can estimate the rotor position without using an extra rotor position sensor by measuring the phase flux linkages and phase currents. Flux linkage-phase current-rotor position data set and supervised backpropagation learning algorithm are used in training of the ANN based position estimator. A 4-phase SRM have been used to verify the accuracy and feasibility of the proposed position estimator. Simulation results show that the proposed position estimator gives precise and accurate position estimations for both under the low and high level reference speeds of the SRM
Abstract: We demonstrate through a sample application, Ebanking,
that the Web Service Modelling Language Ontology component
can be used as a very powerful object-oriented database design
language with logic capabilities. Its conceptual syntax allows the
definition of class hierarchies, and logic syntax allows the definition
of constraints in the database. Relations, which are available for
modelling relations of three or more concepts, can be connected to
logical expressions, allowing the implicit specification of database
content. Using a reasoning tool, logic queries can also be made
against the database in simulation mode.
Abstract: The volume of biosolids produced in Malaysia
nowadays had increased proportionally to its population size. The end
products from the waste treatments were mounting, thus inevitable
that in the end the environment will be surrounded by the waste. This
study was conducted to investigate the suitability of biosolids to be
reused as fertilizer for non-food crop. By varying the concentration of
biosolids applied onto the soil, growth of five ornamental plant
samples were tested for eight consecutive weeks. The results show
that the pH of the soil after the addition of biosolids ranges from 6.45
to 6.56 which is suitable for the plant growth. The soil samples that
contains biosolid also show higher amount of macronutrients (N, P,
K) and the heavy metals content are significantly increased in the
plant however it does not exceed the guidelines drawn by the
Environmental Protection Agency. It is also proven that there was
only small significant different in the performance of plant growth
between biosolids and commercial fertilizer. It can be seen that
biosolids was able to perform just as well as commercial fertilizer.
Abstract: This paper presents the review of past studies
concerning mathematical models for rescheduling passenger railway
services, as part of delay management in the occurrence of railway
disruption. Many past mathematical models highlighted were aimed
at minimizing the service delays experienced by passengers during
service disruptions. Integer programming (IP) and mixed-integer
programming (MIP) models are critically discussed, focusing on the
model approach, decision variables, sets and parameters. Some of
them have been tested on real-life data of railway companies
worldwide, while a few have been validated on fictive data. Based
on selected literatures on train rescheduling, this paper is able to
assist researchers in the model formulation by providing
comprehensive analyses towards the model building. These analyses
would be able to help in the development of new approaches in
rescheduling strategies or perhaps to enhance the existing
rescheduling models and make them more powerful or more
applicable with shorter computing time.
Abstract: Interactive public displays give access as an
innovative media to promote enhanced communication between
people and information. However, digital public displays are subject
to a few constraints, such as content presentation. Content
presentation needs to be developed to be more interesting to attract
people’s attention and motivate people to interact with the display. In
this paper, we proposed idea to implement contents with interaction
elements for vision-based digital public display. Vision-based
techniques are applied as a sensor to detect passers-by and theme
contents are suggested to attract their attention for encouraging them
to interact with the announcement content. Virtual object, gesture
detection and projection installation are applied for attracting
attention from passers-by. Preliminary study showed positive
feedback of interactive content designing towards the public display.
This new trend would be a valuable innovation as delivery of
announcement content and information communication through this
media is proven to be more engaging.
