Abstract: Water leakage is a serious problem in the maintenance of a waterworks facility. Monitoring the water flow rate is one way to locate leakage. However, conventional flowmeters such as the wet-type flowmeter and the clamp-on type ultrasonic flowmeter require additional construction for their installation and are therefore quite expensive. This paper proposes a novel estimation system for the flow rate in a water pipeline, which employs a vibration sensor. This assembly can be attached to any water pipeline without the need for additional high-cost construction. The vibration sensor is designed based on a condenser microphone. This sensor detects vibration caused by water flowing through a pipeline. It is possible to estimate the water flow rate by measuring the amplitude of the output signal from the vibration sensor. We confirmed the validity of the proposed sensing system experimentally.
Abstract: This paper analyzes the extent to which the justices of
the U.S. Supreme Court cast votes that support the positions of the
president, or more generally the Executive Branch. Can presidents
count on such deference from those justices they nominate or those
whom are nominated by other presidents of the same party? Or, do
the justices demonstrate judicial independence and impartiality such
that they are not so predisposed to vote in favor of arguments of their
nominating president-s party? The results suggest that while in
general the justices do not exhibit any marked tendency to partisan
support of presidents, more recent and conservative Supreme Court
justices are significantly more likely to support Republican
presidents.
Abstract: This paper provides a framework in order to
incorporate reliability issue as a sign of disruption in distribution
systems and partial covering theory as a response to limitation in
coverage radios and economical preferences, simultaneously into the
traditional literatures of capacitated facility location problems. As a
result we develop a bi-objective model based on the discrete
scenarios for expected cost minimization and demands coverage
maximization through a three echelon supply chain network by
facilitating multi-capacity levels for provider side layers and
imposing gradual coverage function for distribution centers (DCs).
Additionally, in spite of objectives aggregation for solving the model
through LINGO software, a branch of LP-Metric method called Min-
Max approach is proposed and different aspects of corresponds
model will be explored.
Abstract: Iranians- imagination of heaven, which is the reward
of a person-s good deeds during their life, has shown itself in
pleasant and green gardens where earthly gardens were made as
representations of paradise. Iranians are also quite interested in
making their earthly gardens and plantations around their buildings.
With Iran-s hot and dry climate with a lack of sufficient water for
plantation coverage, it becomes noticeable how important it is to
Iranians- art in making gardens. This study, with regard to examples,
documents and library studies, investigates the characteristics of
Persian gardens. The result shows that elements such as soil, water,
plants and layout have been used in forming a unique style of Persian
gardens. Bagh-e Shah Zadeh Mahan (Mahan prince garden) is a
typical example and has been carefully studied. In this paper I try to
investigate and evaluate the characteristics of a Persian garden by
means of a descriptive approach.
Abstract: The customer satisfaction for textile sector carries
great importance like the customer satisfaction for other sectors
carry. Especially, if it is considered that gaining new customers
create four times more costs than protecting existing customers from
leaving, it can be seen that the customer satisfaction plays a great
role for the firms. In this study the affecting independent variables of
customer satisfaction are chosen as brand image, perceived service
quality and perceived product quality. By these independent
variables, it is investigated that if any differences exist in perception
of customer satisfaction according to the Turkish textile consumers in
the view of gender. In data analysis of this research the SPSS
program is used.
Abstract: A nucleotide sequence can be expressed as a numerical sequence when each nucleotide is assigned its proton number. A resulting gene numerical sequence can be investigated for its fractal dimension in terms of evolution and chemical properties for comparative studies. We have investigated such nucleotide fluctuation in the 16S rRNA gene of archaea thermophiles. The studied archaea thermophiles were archaeoglobus fulgidus, methanothermobacter thermautotrophicus, methanocaldococcus jannaschii, pyrococcus horikoshii, and thermoplasma acidophilum. The studied five archaea-euryarchaeota thermophiles have fractal dimension values ranging from 1.93 to 1.97. Computer simulation shows that random sequences would have an average of about 2 with a standard deviation about 0.015. The fractal dimension was found to correlate (negative correlation) with the thermophile-s optimal growth temperature with R2 value of 0.90 (N =5). The inclusion of two aracheae-crenarchaeota thermophiles reduces the R2 value to 0.66 (N = 7). Further inclusion of two bacterial thermophiles reduces the R2 value to 0.50 (N =9). The fractal dimension is correlated (positive) to the sequence GC content with an R2 value of 0.89 for the five archaea-euryarchaeota thermophiles (and 0.74 for the entire set of N = 9), although computer simulation shows little correlation. The highest correlation (positive) was found to be between the fractal dimension and di-nucleotide Shannon entropy. However Shannon entropy and sequence GC content were observed to correlate with optimal growth temperature having an R2 of 0.8 (negative), and 0.88 (positive), respectively, for the entire set of 9 thermophiles; thus the correlation lacks species specificity. Together with another correlation study of bacterial radiation dosage with RecA repair gene sequence fractal dimension, it is postulated that fractal dimension analysis is a sensitive tool for studying the relationship between genotype and phenotype among closely related sequences.
Abstract: This paper proposes a genetic algorithm based on a
new replacement strategy to solve the quadratic assignment problems,
which are NP-hard. The new replacement strategy aims to improve the
performance of the genetic algorithm through well balancing the
convergence of the searching process and the diversity of the
population. In order to test the performance of the algorithm, the
instances in QAPLIB, a quadratic assignment problem library, are
tried and the results are compared with those reported in the literature.
The performance of the genetic algorithm is promising. The
significance is that this genetic algorithm is generic. It does not rely on
problem-specific genetic operators, and may be easily applied to
various types of combinatorial problems.
Abstract: This paper explains how mobile learning assures sustainable e-education for multicultural group of students. This paper reports the impact of mobile learning on distance education in multicultural environment. The emergence of learning technologies through CD, internet, and mobile is increasingly adopted by distance institutes for quick delivery and cost-effective purposes. Their sustainability is conditioned by the structure of learners as well as the teaching community. The experimental study was conducted among the distant learners of Vinayaka Missions University located at Salem in India. Students were drawn from multicultural environment based on different languages, religions, class and communities. During the mobile learning sessions, the students, who are divided on language, religion, class and community, were dominated by play impulse rather than study anxiety or cultural inhibitions. This study confirmed that mobile learning improved the performance of the students despite their division based on region, language or culture. In other words, technology was able to transcend the relative deprivation in the multicultural groups. It also confirms sustainable e-education through mobile learning and cost-effective system of instruction. Mobile learning appropriates the self-motivation and play impulse of the young learners in providing sustainable e-education to multicultural social groups of students.
Abstract: Experiments have been carried out at the Latvia
University of Agriculture Department of Food Technology. The aim
of this work was to assess the effect of thermal treatment in flexible
retort pouch packaging on the quality of potatoes’ produce during the
storage time. Samples were evaluated immediately after retort
thermal treatment; and following 1; 2; 3 and 4 storage months at the
ambient temperature of +18±2ºC in vacuum packaging from
polyamide/polyethylene (PA/PE) and aluminum/polyethylene
(Al/PE) film pouches with barrier properties. Experimentally the
quality of the potatoes’ produce in dry butter and mushroom
dressings was characterized by measuring pH, hardness, color,
microbiological properties and sensory evaluation. The sterilization
was effective in protecting the produce from physical, chemical, and
microbial quality degradation. According to the study of obtained
data, it can be argued that the selected product processing technology
and packaging materials could be applied to provide the safety and
security during four-month storage period.
Abstract: In this paper we propose, a Lagrangian method to solve unsteady gas equation which is a nonlinear ordinary differential equation on semi-infnite interval. This approach is based on Modified generalized Laguerre functions. This method reduces the solution of this problem to the solution of a system of algebraic equations. We also compare this work with some other numerical results. The findings show that the present solution is highly accurate.
Abstract: In this paper, a fiber based Fabry-Perot interferometer
is proposed and demonstrated for a non-contact displacement
measurement. A piece of micro-prism which attached to the
mechanical vibrator is served as the target reflector. Interference
signal is generated from the superposition between the sensing beam
and the reference beam within the sensing arm of the fiber sensor.
This signal is then converted to the displacement value by using a
developed program written in visual Cµ programming with a
resolution of λ/8. A classical function generator is operated for
controlling the vibrator. By fixing an excitation frequency of 100 Hz
and varying the excitation amplitude range of 0.1 – 3 Volts, the
output displacements measured by the fiber sensor are obtained from
1.55 μm to 30.225 μm. A reference displacement sensor with a
sensitivity of ~0.4 μm is also employed for comparing the
displacement errors between both sensors. We found that over the
entire displacement range, a maximum and average measurement
error are obtained of 0.977% and 0.44% respectively.
Abstract: The paper provides a numerical investigation of the
entropy generation analysis due to natural convection in an inclined
square porous cavity. The coupled equations of mass, momentum,
energy and species conservation are solved using the Control Volume
Finite-Element Method. Effect of medium permeability and
inclination angle on entropy generation is analysed. It was found that
according to the Darcy number and the porous thermal Raleigh
number values, the entropy generation could be mainly due to heat
transfer or to fluid friction irreversibility and that entropy generation
reaches extremum values for specific inclination angles.
Abstract: In this paper we propose a new knowledge model using
the Dempster-Shafer-s evidence theory for image segmentation and
fusion. The proposed method is composed essentially of two steps.
First, mass distributions in Dempster-Shafer theory are obtained from
the membership degrees of each pixel covering the three image
components (R, G and B). Each membership-s degree is determined by
applying Fuzzy C-Means (FCM) clustering to the gray levels of the
three images. Second, the fusion process consists in defining three
discernment frames which are associated with the three images to be
fused, and then combining them to form a new frame of discernment.
The strategy used to define mass distributions in the combined
framework is discussed in detail. The proposed fusion method is
illustrated in the context of image segmentation. Experimental
investigations and comparative studies with the other previous methods
are carried out showing thus the robustness and superiority of the
proposed method in terms of image segmentation.
Abstract: E-learning is not restricted to the use of new technologies for the online content, but also induces the adoption of new approaches to improve the quality of education. This quality depends on the ability of these approaches (technical and pedagogical) to provide an adaptive learning environment. Thus, the environment should include features that convey intentions and meeting the educational needs of learners by providing a customized learning path to acquiring a competency concerned In our proposal, we believe that an individualized learning path requires knowledge of the learner. Therefore, it must pass through a personalization of diagnosis to identify precisely the competency gaps to fill, and reduce the cognitive load To personalize the diagnosis and pertinently measure the competency gap, we suggest implementing the formative assessment in the e-learning environment and we propose the introduction of a pre-regulation process in the area of formative assessment, involving its individualization and implementation in e-learning.
Abstract: Purpose of this paper is two-folded. At first it explains
the major problems that are causing stagnation in brownfield
redevelopment. In addition, these problems given the context of the
present multi-actor built environment are becoming more complex to
observe. Therefore, this paper suggests also a prospective decisionmaking
approach that is the most appropriate to observe and react on
the given stagnation problems. Such an approach should be regarded
as prescriptive-interactive decision-making approach, a barely
established branch. This approach should offer models that have
prescriptive as well as an interactive component enabling them to
successfully cope with the multi-actor environment. Overall, this
paper provides up-to-date insight on the brownfield stagnation by
gradually introducing the nowadays major problems and offers a
prospective decision-making approach how these problems could be
tackled.
Abstract: The main aim of this paper is to develop and calibrate
an econometric model for modeling prices of long term electricity
futures contracts. The calibration of our model is performed on data
from EEX AG allowing us to capture the specific features of German
electricity market. The data sample contains several structural breaks
which have to be taken into account for modeling. We model the data
with an ARIMAX model which reveals high correlation between the
price of electricity futures contracts and prices of LT futures
contracts of fuels (namely coal, natural gas and crude oil). Besides
this, also a share price index of representative electricity companies
traded on Xetra, spread between 10Y and 1Y German bonds and
exchange rate between EUR and USD appeared to have significant
explanatory power over these futures contracts on EEX.
Abstract: Triglycerides and their derivatives are considered as viable alternatives for diesel fuels. Rice bran oil is used as diesel fuel. Highly viscous rice bran oil can be reduced by blending it with diesel fuel. The present research is aimed to investigate experimentally the performance, exhaust emission and combustion characteristics of a direct injection (DI) diesel engine, typically used in agricultural sector, over the entire load range when fuelled with rice bran oil and diesel fuel blends, RB10 (10% rice bran oil + 90% diesel fuel) to RB50. The performance, emission and combustion parameters of RB20 were found to be very close to neat diesel fuel (ND). The injector opening pressure (IOP) undoubtedly is of prime importance in diesel engine operation. Performance, emission and combustion characteristics with RB30 at enhanced IOPs are better than ND. Improved premixed heat release rate were noticed with RB30 when the IOP is enhanced.
Abstract: The aim of this paper is to determine Frenet-Serret invariants of non-null curves in Lorentzian 5-space. First, we define a vector product of four vectors, by this way, we present a method to calculate Frenet-Serret invariants of the non-null curves. Additionally, an algebraic example of presented method is illustrated.
Abstract: Library management systems are commonly used in
all educational related institutes. Many commercial products are
available. However, many institutions may not be able to afford the
cost of using commercial products. Therefore, an alternative solution
in such situations would be open source software. This paper is
focusing on reviewing open source library management system
packages currently available. The review will focus on the abilities to
perform four basic components which are traditional services,
interlibrary load management, managing electronic materials and
basic common management system such as security, alert system and
statistical reports. In addition, environment, basic requirement and
supporting aspects of each open source package are also mentioned.
Abstract: In this paper we study the resource allocation problem
for an OFDMA based cooperative two-way relaying (TWR) network.
We focus on amplify and forward (AF) analog network coding
(ANC) protocol. An optimization problem for two basic resources
namely, sub-carrier and power is formulated for multi-user TWR
networks. A joint optimal optimization problem is investigated and
two-step low complexity sub-optimal resource allocation algorithm is
proposed for multi-user TWR networks with ANC protocol. The
proposed algorithm has been evaluated in term of total achievable
system sum-rate and achievable individual sum-rate for each userpair.
The good tradeoff between system sum-rate and fairness is
observed in the two-step proportional resource allocation scheme.
