Abstract: Reducing sloshing is one of the major challenges in industries where transporting of liquid is involved. The present study investigates the sloshing effect for different liquid levels of 50% of the tank capacity. CFD simulation for two different baffle configurations has been carried out using a time-based multiphase Volume of fluid (VOF) scheme. Baffles were introduced to examine the sloshing effect inside the tank. Results were compared against the baseline case to assess the effectiveness of baffles; maximum liquid height over the period of the simulation was considered as the parameter for measuring the sloshing effect inside the tank. It was found that the addition of baffles reduced the sloshing effect inside the tank as compared to the baseline model.
Abstract: Medical latex gloves are made from the latex compound in production lines. Latex dipping is considered one of the most important processes that directly affect the final product quality. In a continuous production line, a chain conveyor carries the formers through the process and partially submerges them into an open channel flow in a latex dipping tank. In general, the conveyor speed is determined by the desired production capacity, and the latex-dipping tank can then be designed accordingly. It is important to understand the flow behavior in the dipping tank in order to achieve high quality in the process. In this work, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) was used to simulate the flow past an array of formers in a simplified latex dipping process. The computational results showed both the flow structure and the vortex generation between two formers. The maximum shear stress over the surface of the formers was used as the quality metric of the latex-dipping process when adjusting operation parameters.
Abstract: The work sought to understand the pattern of movement of contaminant from a continuous point source through soil. The soil used was sandy-loam in texture. The contaminant used was municipal solid waste landfill leachate, introduced as a point source through an entry point located at the center of top layer of the soil tank. Analyses were conducted after maturity periods of 50 and 80 days. The maximum change in chemical concentration was observed on soil samples at a radial distance of 0.25 m. Finite element approximation based model was used to assess the future prediction, management and remediation in the polluted area. The actual field data collected for the case study were used to calibrate the modeling and thus simulated the flow pattern of the pollutants through soil. MATLAB R2015a was used to visualize the flow of pollutant through the soil. Dispersion coefficient at 0.25 and 0.50 m radial distance from the point of application of leachate shows a measure of the spreading of a flowing leachate due to the nature of the soil medium, with its interconnected channels distributed at random in all directions. Surface plots of metals on soil after maturity period of 80 days shows a functional relationship between a designated dependent variable (Y), and two independent variables (X and Z). Comparison of measured and predicted profile transport along the depth after 50 and 80 days of leachate application and end of the experiment shows that there were no much difference between the predicted and measured concentrations as they were all lying close to each other. For the analysis of contaminant transport, finite difference approximation based model was very effective in assessing the future prediction, management and remediation in the polluted area. The experiment gave insight into the most likely pattern of movement of contaminant as a result of continuous percolations of the leachate on soil. This is important for contaminant movement prediction and subsequent remediation of such soils.
Abstract: Rigorous international maritime regulations are in place to limit boat and ship hydrocarbon emissions. The global sustainability goals are reducing the fuel consumption and minimizing the emissions from the ships and boats. These maritime sustainability goals have attracted a lot of research interest. Energy harvesting and storage system is designed in this study based on hybrid renewable and conventional energy systems. This energy harvesting and storage system is designed for marine applications, such as, boats and small ships. These systems can be utilized for mobile use or off-grid remote electrification. This study analyzed the use of micro power generation for boats and small ships. The energy harvesting and storage system has two distinct systems i.e. dockside shore-based system and on-board system. The shore-based system consists of a small wind turbine, photovoltaic (PV) panels, small gas turbine, hydrogen generator and high-pressure hydrogen storage tank. This dockside system is to provide easy access to the boats and small ships for supply of hydrogen. The on-board system consists of hydrogen storage tanks and fuel cells. The wind turbine and PV panels generate electricity to operate electrolyzer. A small gas turbine is used as a supplementary power system to contribute in case the hybrid renewable energy system does not provide the required energy. The electrolyzer performs the electrolysis on distilled water to produce hydrogen. The hydrogen is stored in high-pressure tanks. The hydrogen from the high-pressure tank is filled in the low-pressure tanks on-board seagoing vessels to operate the fuel cell. The boats and small ships use the hydrogen fuel cell to provide power to electric propulsion motors and for on-board auxiliary use. For shore-based system, a small wind turbine with the total length of 4.5 m and the disk diameter of 1.8 m is used. The small wind turbine dimensions make it big enough to be used to charge batteries yet small enough to be installed on the rooftops of dockside facility. The small dimensions also make the wind turbine easily transportable. In this paper, PV, sizing and solar flux are studied parametrically. System performance is evaluated under different operating and environmental conditions. The parametric study is conducted to evaluate the energy output and storage capacity of energy storage system. Results are generated for a wide range of conditions to analyze the usability of hybrid energy harvesting and storage system. This energy harvesting method significantly improves the usability and output of the renewable energy sources. It also shows that small hybrid energy systems have promising practical applications.
Abstract: Selecting the most suitable welding process usually depends on experiences or common application in similar companies. However, this approach generally ignores many criteria that can be affecting the suitable welding process selection. Therefore, knowledge automation through knowledge-based systems will significantly improve the decision-making process. The aims of this research propose integrated data envelopment analysis (DEA) and fuzzy credibility constrained programming approach for identifying the best welding process for stainless steel storage tank in the food and beverage industry. The proposed approach uses fuzzy concept and credibility measure to deal with uncertain data from experts' judgment. Furthermore, 12 parameters are used to determine the most appropriate welding processes among six competitive welding processes.
Abstract: Botswana is an arid country that needs to start reusing wastewater as part of its water security plan. Pilot scale slow sand filtration in combination with roughing filter was investigated for the treatment of effluent from Botswana International University of Science and Technology to meet Botswana irrigation standards. The system was operated at hydraulic loading rates of 0.04 m/hr and 0.12 m/hr. The results show that the system was able to reduce turbidity from 262 Nephelometric Turbidity Units to a range between 18 and 0 Nephelometric Turbidity Units which was below 30 Nephelometric Turbidity Units threshold limit. The overall efficacy ranged between 61% and 100%. Suspended solids, Biochemical Oxygen Demand, and Chemical Oxygen Demand removal efficiency averaged 42.6%, 45.5%, and 77% respectively and all within irrigation standards. Other physio-chemical parameters were within irrigation standards except for bicarbonate ion which averaged 297.7±44 mg L-1 in the influent and 196.22±50 mg L-1 in the effluent which was above the limit of 92 mg L-1, therefore averaging a reduction of 34.1% by the system. Total coliforms, fecal coliforms, and Escherichia coli in the effluent were initially averaging 1.1 log counts, 0.5 log counts, and 1.3 log counts respectively compared to corresponding influent log counts of 3.4, 2.7 and 4.1, respectively. As time passed, it was observed that only roughing filter was able to reach reductions of 97.5%, 86% and 100% respectively for faecal coliforms, Escherichia coli, and total coliforms. These organism numbers were observed to have increased in slow sand filter effluent suggesting multiplication in the tank. Water quality index value of 22.79 for the physio-chemical parameters suggests that the effluent is of excellent quality and can be used for irrigation purposes. However, the water quality index value for the microbial parameters (1820) renders the quality unsuitable for irrigation. It is concluded that slow sand filtration in combination with roughing filter is a viable option for the treatment of secondary effluent for reuse purposes. However, further studies should be conducted especially for the removal of microbial parameters using the system.
Abstract: The current state-of-the-art methods of mass gauging of Electric Propulsion (EP) propellants in microgravity conditions rely on external measurements that are taken at the surface of the tank. The tanks are operated under a constant thermal duty cycle to store the propellant within a pre-defined temperature and pressure range. We demonstrate using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations that the heat-transfer within the pressurized propellant generates temperature and density anisotropies. This challenges the standard mass gauging methods that rely on the use of time changing skin-temperatures and pressures. We observe that the domes of the tanks are prone to be overheated, and that a long time after the heaters of the thermal cycle are switched off, the system reaches a quasi-equilibrium state with a more uniform density. We propose a new gauging method, which we call the Improved PVT method, based on universal physics and thermodynamics principles, existing TRL-9 technology and telemetry data. This method only uses as inputs the temperature and pressure readings of sensors externally attached to the tank. These sensors can operate during the nominal thermal duty cycle. The improved PVT method shows little sensitivity to the pressure sensor drifts which are critical towards the end-of-life of the missions, as well as little sensitivity to systematic temperature errors. The retrieval method has been validated experimentally with CO2 in gas and fluid state in a chamber that operates up to 82 bar within a nominal thermal cycle of 38 °C to 42 °C. The mass gauging error is shown to be lower than 1% the mass at the beginning of life, assuming an initial tank load at 100 bar. In particular, for a pressure of about 70 bar, just below the critical pressure of CO2, the error of the mass gauging in gas phase goes down to 0.1% and for 77 bar, just above the critical point, the error of the mass gauging of the liquid phase is 0.6% of initial tank load. This gauging method improves by a factor of 8 the accuracy of the standard PVT retrievals using look-up tables with tabulated data from the National Institute of Standards and Technology.
Abstract: The different seismic behavior of liquid storage tanks rather than conventional structures makes their responses more complicated. Uplifting and excessive settlement due to liquid sloshing are the most frequent damages in cylindrical liquid tanks after shell bucking failure modes. As a matter of fact, uses of liquid storage tanks because of the simple construction on compact layer of soil as a foundation are very conventional, but in some cases need to retrofit are essential. The tank seismic behavior can be improved by modifying dynamic characteristic of tank with verifying seismic loads as well as retrofitting and improving base ground. This paper focuses on a typical steel tank on loose, medium and stiff sandy soil and describes an evaluation of displacement of the tank before and after retrofitting. The Abaqus program was selected for its ability to include shell and structural steel elements, soil-structure interaction, and geometrical nonlinearities and contact type elements. The result shows considerable decreasing in settlement and uplifting in the case of retrofitted tank. Also, by increasing shear strength parameter of soil, the performance of the liquid storage tank under the case of seismic load increased.
Abstract: In this paper, we study a complex structure which is an apartment building surmounted by a reinforced concrete water tank. The tank located on the top floor of the building is a container with capacity of 1000 m3. The building is complex in its design, its calculation and by its behavior under earthquake effect. This structure located in Algiers and aged of 53 years has been subjected to several earthquakes, but the earthquake of May 21st, 2003 with a magnitude of 6.7 on the Richter scale that struck Boumerdes region at 40 Kms East of Algiers was fatal for it. It was downgraded after an investigation study because the central core sustained serious damage. In this paper, to estimate the degree of its damages, the seismic performance of the structure will be evaluated taking into account the hydrodynamic effect, using a static equivalent nonlinear analysis called pushover.
Abstract: The solar power source for pumping water is one of the most promising areas in photovoltaic applications. The implementation of these systems allows to protect the environment and reduce the CO2 gas emission compared to systems trained by diesel generators. This paper presents a comparative study between the photovoltaic pumping system driven by DC motor, and AC motor to define the optimum design of this application. The studied system consists of PV array, DC-DC Boost Converter, inverter, motor-pump set and storage tank. The comparison was carried out to define the characteristics and the performance of each system. Each subsystem is modeled in order to simulate the whole system in MATLAB/ Simulink. The results show the efficiency of the proposed technique.
Abstract: Solar water heating is a thermodynamic process of
heating water using sunlight with the help of solar water heater. Thus,
solar water heater is a device used to harness solar energy. In this
paper, a modified solar water heating system (MSWHS) has been
proposed over flat plate collector (FPC) and Evacuated tube collector
(ETC). The modifications include selection of materials other than
glass, and glass wool which are conventionally used for fabricating
FPC and ETC. Some modifications in design have also been
proposed. Its collector is made of double layer of semi-cylindrical
acrylic tubes and fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) insulation base. Water
tank is made of double layer of acrylic sheet except base and north
wall. FRP is used in base and north wall of the water tank. A concept
of equivalent thickness has been utilised for calculating the
dimensions of collector plate, acrylic tube and tank. A thermal model for the proposed design of MSWHS is developed
and simulation is carried out on MATLAB for the capacity of 200L
MSWHS having collector area of 1.6 m2, length of acrylic tubes of
2m at an inclination angle 25° which is taken nearly equal to the
latitude of the given location. Latitude of Allahabad is 24.45° N. The
results show that the maximum temperature of water in tank and tube
has been found to be 71.2°C and 73.3°C at 17:00hr and 16:00hr
respectively in March for the climatic data of Allahabad. Theoretical performance analysis has been carried out by varying
number of tubes of collector, the tank capacity and climatic data for
given months of winter and summer.
Abstract: The study conducted a simulation of the effect of sea
water to the bonding capacity of GFRP sheet on the concrete beams
using a simulation tank. Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) has been
developed and applied in many fields civil engineering structures on
the new structures and also for strengthening of the deteriorated
structures. The FRP has advantages such as its corrosion resistance as
well as high tensile strength to weight ratio. Compared to the other
FRP materials, Glass composed FRP (GFRP) is relatively cheaper.
GFRP sheet is applied externally by bonding it on the concrete surface.
The studies regarding the application of GFRP sheet have been
conducted such as strengthening system, bonding behavior of GFRP
sheet including the application as reinforcement in new structures. For
application to the structures with direct contact to sea environment, a
study regarding the effect of sea water to the bonding capacity of
GFRP sheet is important to be clarified. To achieve the objective of the
study, a series of concrete beams strengthened with GFRP sheet on
extreme tension surface were prepared. The beams then were stored on
the sea water tank for six months. Results indicated the bonding
capacity decreased after six month exposed to the sea water.
Abstract: In wastewater treatment processes, aeration introduces
air into a liquid. In these systems, air is introduced by different
devices submerged in the wastewater. Smaller bubbles result in more
bubble surface area per unit of volume and higher oxygen transfer
efficiency. Jet pumps are devices that use air bubbles and are widely
used in wastewater treatment processes. The principle of jet pumps is
their ability to transfer energy of one fluid, called primary or motive,
into a secondary fluid or gas. These pumps have no moving parts and
are able to work in remote areas under extreme conditions. The
objective of this work is to study experimentally the characteristics of
the jet pump and the size of air bubbles in the laboratory water tank.
The effect of flow rate ratio on pump performance is investigated in
order to have a better understanding about pump behavior under
various conditions, in order to determine the efficiency of receiving
air bubbles different sizes. The experiments show that we should take
care when increasing the flow rate ratio while seeking to decrease
bubble size in the outlet flow. This study will help improve and
extend the use of the jet pump in many practical applications.
Abstract: This paper discusses the design and analysis of a
hybrid PV-Fuel cell energy system destined to power a DC load. The
system is composed of a photovoltaic array, a fuel cell, an
electrolyzer and a hydrogen tank. HOMER software is used in this
study to calculate the optimum capacities of the power system
components that their combination allows an efficient use of solar
resource to cover the hourly load needs. The optimal system sizing
allows establishing the right balance between the daily electrical
energy produced by the power system and the daily electrical energy
consumed by the DC load using a 28 KW PV array, a 7.5 KW fuel
cell, a 40KW electrolyzer and a 270 Kg hydrogen tank. The variation
of powers involved into the DC bus of the hybrid PV-fuel cell system
has been computed and analyzed for each hour over one year: the
output powers of the PV array and the fuel cell, the input power of
the elctrolyzer system and the DC primary load. Equally, the annual
variation of stored hydrogen produced by the electrolyzer has been
assessed. The PV array contributes in the power system with 82%
whereas the fuel cell produces 18%. 38% of the total energy
consumption belongs to the DC primary load while the rest goes to
the electrolyzer.
Abstract: The computational fluid dynamics (CFD) study of
stirred tank with the air-water interface are carried out in the presence
of different types of the impeller and with or without baffles. A
multiple reference frame (MRF) approach with the volume of fluid
(VOF) method is used to capture the air-water interface. The RANS
(Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes) equations with k-ε turbulence
model are solved to predict the flow behavior of water and air phase
which are treated as a different phases. The predicted results have
shown that the VOF method is able to capture the interface in the
unbaffled tank. While, the VOF method is showing an unfeasible
results in the baffled tank with high rotational impeller speed. For
continuous stirred tank, the air-water interface is disturbed by the
inflow and the level of water is also increased with time.
Abstract: A computational fluid dynamics simulation is done for
non-Newtonian fluid in a baffled stirred tank. The CMC solution is
taken as non-Newtonian shear thinning fluid for simulation. The
Reynolds Average Navier Stocks equation with steady state multi
reference frame approach is used to simulate flow in the stirred tank.
The turbulent flow field is modelled using realizable k-ε turbulence
model. The simulated velocity profiles of Rushton turbine is
validated with literature data. Then, the simulated flow field of CD-6
impeller is compared with the Rushton turbine. The flow field
generated by CD-6 impeller is less in magnitude than the Rushton
turbine. The impeller global parameter, power number and flow
number, and entropy generation due to viscous dissipation rate is also
reported.
Abstract: Hybrid photovoltaic thermal (PVT) collectors allow simultaneous production of electrical energy thus heat energy. There are several configurations of hybrid collectors (to produce water or air). For hybrids water collectors, there are several configurations that differ by the nature of the absorber (serpentine, tubes...). In this paper, an absorber tank is studied. The circulation of the coolant is natural (we do not use the pump). We present the obtained results in our experimental study and we analyzed the data, and then we compare the results with the theory practices. The electrical performances of the hybrid collector are compared with those of conventional photovoltaic module mounted on the same structure and measured under the same conditions.

Abstract: Different approaches for heating\cooling of stirred tanks, coils and jackets, are investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD).A time-dependant sliding mesh approach is applied to simulate the flow in both conditions. The investigations are carried out under the turbulent flow conditions for a Rushton impeller and heating elements are considered isothermal. The flow behavior and temperature distribution are studied for each case and heat transfer coefficient is calculated. Results show different velocity profiles for each case. Unsteady temperature distribution is not similar for different cases .In the case of the coiled stirred vessel more uniform temperature and higher heat transfer coefficient is resulted.
Abstract: When the crisscross baffles and logarithmic spiral
baffles are placed on the bottom of the stirred tank with elliptic
bottom, using CFD software FLUENT simulates the velocity field of
the stirred tank with elliptic bottom and bottom baffles. Compare the
velocity field of stirred tank with bottom crisscross baffle to the
velocity field of stirred tank without bottom baffle and analysis the
flow pattern on the same axis-section and different cross-sections. The
sizes of the axial and radial velocity are compared respectively when
the stirred tank with bottom crisscross baffles, bottom logarithmic
spiral baffles and without bottom baffle. At the same time, the
numerical calculations of mixing power are compared when the stirred
tank with bottom crisscross baffles and bottom logarithmic spiral
baffles. Research shows that bottom crisscross baffles and logarithmic
spiral baffles have a great impact on flow pattern within the reactor
and improve the mixing effect better than without baffle. It also has
shown that bottom logarithmic spiral baffles has lower power
consumption than bottom crisscross baffles.
Abstract: In this work, the results of mixing study by a jet mixer in a tank have been investigated in the laboratory scale. The tank dimensions are H/D=1 and the jet entrance have been considered in
the center of upper surface of tank. RNG-k-ε model is used as the
turbulent model for the prediction of the pattern of turbulent flow
inside the tank. For this purpose, a tank with volume of 110 liter is
simulated and it has been divided into 410,000 tetrahedral control
cells for performing the calculations. The grids at the vicinity of the
nozzle and suction pare are finer to get more accurate results. The
experimental results showed that in a vertical jet, the lowest mixing
time takes place at 35 degree. In addition, mixing time decreased by
increasing the Reynolds number. Furthermore, the CFD simulation
predicted the items as well a flow patterns precisely that validates the
experiments.
