Abstract: Carrier-based methods have been used widely for switching of multilevel inverters due to their simplicity, flexibility and reduced computational requirements compared to space vector modulation (SVM). This paper focuses on Multicarrier Sinusoidal Pulse Width Modulation (MCSPWM) strategy for the three phase Five-Level Flying Capacitor Inverter (5LFCI). The inverter is simulated for Induction Motor (IM) load and Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) for output waveforms is observed for different controlling schemes.
Abstract: Access to advanced medical services has been one of the medical challenges faced by our present society especially in distant geographical locations which may be inaccessible. Then the need for telemedicine arises through which live videos of a doctor can be streamed to a patient located anywhere in the world at any time. Patients’ medical records contain very sensitive information which should not be made accessible to unauthorized people in order to protect privacy, integrity and confidentiality. This research work focuses on a more robust security measure which is biometric (fingerprint) as a form of access control to data of patients by the medical specialist/practitioner.
Abstract: College students are expected to engage in an on-the-job training or internship for completion of a course requirement prior to graduation. In this scenario, they are exposed to the real world of work outside their training institution. To find out their readiness both emotionally and academically, this study has been conducted. A descriptive-correlational research design was employed and random sampling technique method was utilized among 265 randomly selected third year college students of PIT, SY 2014-15. A questionnaire on Emotional Intelligence (bearing the four components namely; emotional literacy, emotional quotient competence, values and beliefs and emotional quotient outcomes) was fielded to the respondents and GWA was extracted from the school automate. Data collected were statistically treated using percentage, weighted mean and Pearson-r for correlation.
Results revealed that respondents’ emotional intelligence level is moderately high while their academic performance is good. A high significant relationship was found between the EI component; Emotional Literacy and their academic performance while only significant relationship was found between Emotional Quotient Outcomes and their academic performance. Therefore, if EI influences academic performance significantly when correlated, a possibility that their OJT performance can also be affected either positively or negatively. Thus, EI can be considered predictor of their academic and academic-related performance. Based on the result, it is then recommended that the institution would try to look deeply into the consideration of embedding emotional intelligence as part of the (especially on Emotional Literacy and Emotional Quotient Outcomes of the students) college curriculum. It can be done if the school shall have an effective Emotional Intelligence framework or program manned by qualified and competent teachers, guidance counselors in different colleges in its implementation.
Abstract: This paper presents Differential Evolution Algorithm (DEA) based Variable Structure Position Control (VSPC) of Laboratory DC servomotor (LDCSM). DEA is employed for the optimal tuning of Variable Structure Control (VSC) parameters for position control of a DC servomotor. The VSC combines the techniques of Sliding Mode Control (SMC) that gives the advantages of small overshoot, improved step response characteristics, faster dynamic response and adaptability to plant parameter variations, suppressed influences of disturbances and uncertainties in system behavior. The results of the simulation responses of the VSC parameters adjustment by DEA were performed in Matlab Version 2010a platform and yield better dynamic performance compared with the untuned VSC designed.
Abstract: This study attempts to consider the linkage between management and computer sciences in order to develop the software named “IntelSymb” as a demo application to prove data analysis of non-energy* fields’ diversification, which will positively influence on energy dependency mitigation of countries. Afterward, we analyzed 18 years of economic fields of development (5 sectors) of 13 countries by identifying which patterns mostly prevailed and which can be dominant in the near future. To make our analysis solid and plausible, as a future work, we suggest developing a gateway or interface, which will be connected to all available on-line data bases (WB, UN, OECD, U.S. EIA) for countries’ analysis by fields. Sample data consists of energy (TPES and energy import indicators) and non-energy industries’ (Main Science and Technology Indicator, Internet user index, and Sales and Production indicators) statistics from 13 OECD countries over 18 years (1995-2012). Our results show that the diversification of non-energy industries can have a positive effect on energy sector dependency (energy consumption and import dependence on crude oil) deceleration. These results can provide empirical and practical support for energy and non-energy industries diversification’ policies, such as the promoting of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs), services and innovative technologies efficiency and management, in other OECD and non-OECD member states with similar energy utilization patterns and policies. Industries, including the ICT sector, generate around 4 percent of total GHG, but this is much higher — around 14 percent — if indirect energy use is included. The ICT sector itself (excluding the broadcasting sector) contributes approximately 2 percent of global GHG emissions, at just under 1 gigatonne of carbon dioxide equivalent (GtCO2eq). Ergo, this can be a good example and lesson for countries which are dependent and independent on energy, and mainly emerging oil-based economies, as well as to motivate non-energy industries diversification in order to be ready to energy crisis and to be able to face any economic crisis as well.
Abstract: The paper presents results of the project conducted in Poland devoted to study on bird strikes at military airfields. The main aim of this project was to develop methods of aircraft protection against threats from birds. The studies were carried out using two methods. One by transect and the other one by selected sector scanning. During the research, it was recorded, that 104 species of birds in the number about of 36000 were observed. The most frequent ones were starling Sturnus vulgaris (31.0%), jackdaw Corvus monedula (18.3%), rook Corvus frugilegus (15.9 %), lapwing Vanellus vanellus (6.2%). Moreover, it was found, that starlings constituted the most serious threat. It resulted from their relatively high attendance at the runway (about 300 individuals). Possible repellent techniques concerning of the Deblin military airfield were discussed. The analysis of the birds’ concentration depending on the altitude, part of the day, year, part of the airfield constituted a base to work out critical flight phase and appropriate procedures to prevent bird strikes.
Abstract: The safflower seed contains about 25-40% solvent extract and 20-33% fiber. It is well known that dietary phospholipids lower serum cholesterol levels effectively. The nutrient composition of safflower seed changes depending on region, soil and genotypes. This research was made by using of six natural selected (A22, A29, A30, C12, E1, F4, G8, G12, J27) and three commercial (Remzibey, Dincer, Black Sun1) varieties of safflower genotypes. The research was conducted on field conditions for two years (2009 and 2010) in randomized complete block design with three replications in Konya-Turkey ecological conditions. Oil contents, mineral contents and their correlations were determined in the research. According to the results, oil content was ranged from 22.38% to 34.26%, while the minerals were in between the following values: 1469, 04-2068.07 mg kg-1 for Ca, 7.24-11.71 mg kg-1 for B, 13.29-17.41 mg kg-1 for Cu, 51.00-79.35 mg kg-1 for Fe, 3988-6638.34 mg kg-1 for K, 1418.61-2306.06 mg kg-1 for Mg, 11.37-17.76 mg kg-1 for Mn, 4172.33-7059.58 mg kg-1 for P and 32.60-59.00 mg kg-1 for Zn. Correlation analysis that was made separately for the commercial varieties and wild lines showed that high level of oil content was negatively affected by all the investigated minerals except for K and Zn in the commercial varieties.
Abstract: Goat production is one of the activities included in
integrated farming in the Philippines. Goats are raised for its meat
and regardless of breed the animal is slaughtered for this purpose. In
order to document the carcass yield of different goats slaughtered,
five (5) different breeds of goats to include Purebred Boer and
Anglo-nubian, Crossbred Boer and Anglo-nubian and Philippine
Native goat were used in the study. Data on slaughter parameters,
carcass characteristics, and sensory evaluation were gathered and
analyzed using Complete Random Design (CRD) at 5% level of
significance and the results of carcass conformation were assessed
descriptively. Results showed that slaughter data such as
slaughter/live weight, hot and chilled carcass weights, dressing
percentage and percentage drip loss were significantly different
(P>0.05) among breeds. On carcass and meat characteristics, pure
breed and upgraded Boer were found to be moderately muscular
while Native goat was rated as thin muscular. The color of the
carcass also revealed that Purebred and crossbred Boer were
described dark red, while Native goat was noted to be slightly pale.
On sensory evaluation, the results indicated that there was no
significant difference (P>0.05) among breeds evaluated. It is
therefore concluded that purebred goat has heavier carcass, while
both purebred Boer and upgrade are rated slightly muscular. It is
further confirms that regardless of breed, goat will have the same
sensory characteristics. Thus, it is recommended to slaughter heavier
goats to obtain more carcasses with better conformation and quality.
Abstract: The new design of heat exchangers utilizing an
annular distributor opens a new gateway for realizing higher energy
optimization. To realize this goal, graphene nanoplatelet-based water
nanofluids with promising thermophysical properties were
synthesized in the presence of covalent and noncovalent
functionalization. Thermal conductivity, density, viscosity and
specific heat capacity were investigated and employed as a raw data
for ANSYS-Fluent to be used in two-phase approach. After
validation of obtained results by analytical equations, two special
parameters of convective heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop
were investigated. The study followed by studying other heat transfer
parameters of annular pass in the presence of graphene nanopletelesbased
water nanofluids at different weight concentrations, input
powers and temperatures. As a result, heat transfer performance and
friction loss are predicted for both synthesized nanofluids.
Abstract: The present study investigated the protective effect of
thymoquinone (TQ), against cadmium-induced kidney injury in rats.
Cadmium chloride (1.2 mg Cd/kg/day, s.c.), was given for nine
weeks. TQ treatment (40 mg/kg/day, p.o.) started on the same day of
cadmium administration and continued for nine weeks. TQ
significantly decreased serum creatinine, renal malondialdehyde and
nitric oxide, and significantly increased renal reduced glutathione in
rats received cadmium. Histopathological examination showed that
TQ markedly minimized renal tissue damage induced by cadmium.
Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that TQ markedly decreased
the cadmium-induced expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase,
tumor necrosis factor-α, cyclooxygenase-2, and caspase-3 in renal
tissue. It was concluded that TQ significantly protected against
cadmium nephrotoxicity in rats, through its antioxidant, antiinflammatory,
and antiapoptotic actions.
Abstract: The present study is based on the three-dimensional digital analysis by the finite elements method of the mechanical loading effect on the delamination of unidirectional and multidirectional stratified composites. The aim of this work is the determination of the release energy rate G in mode I and the Von Mises equivalent constraint distribution along the damaged area under the influence of several parameters such as the applied load and the delamination size. The results obtained in this study show that the unidirectional composite laminates have better mechanical resistance one the loading line than the multidirectional composite laminates.
Abstract: The material selection problem is concerned with the
determination of the right material for a certain product to optimize
certain performance indices in that product such as mass, energy
density, and power-to-weight ratio. This paper is concerned about
optimizing the selection of the manufacturing process along with the
material used in the product under performance indices and
availability constraints. In this paper, the material selection problem
is formulated using binary programming and solved by genetic
algorithm. The objective function of the model is to minimize the
total manufacturing cost under performance indices and material and
manufacturing process availability constraints.
Abstract: By using an adequate thermal barrier coating in
buildings the energy saving will be happened. In this study, a range
of wall paints with different absorption coefficient in different
climates has been investigated. In order to study these effects, heating
and cooling loads of a common building with different ordinary
paints and paint with mineral coating have been calculated. The
effect of building paint in different climatic condition was studied
and comparison was done between ordinary paints and paint with
mineral insulators in temperate climate to obtain optimized energy
consumption. The results have been shown that coatings with
inorganic micro particles as insulation reduce the energy
consumption of buildings around 14%.
Abstract: Elastic scattering of α-particles from 9Be and 11B
nuclei at different alpha energies have been analyzed. Optical model
parameters (OMPs) of α-particles elastic scattering by these nuclei at
different energies have been obtained. In the present calculations, the
real part of the optical potential are derived by folding of nucleonnucleon
(NN) interaction into nuclear matter density distribution of
the projectile and target nuclei using computer code FRESCO. A
density-dependent version of the M3Y interaction (CDM3Y6), which
is based on the G-matrix elements of the Paris NN potential, has been
used. Volumetric integrals of the real and imaginary potential depth
(JR, JW) have been calculated and found to be energy dependent.
Good agreement between the experimental data and the theoretical
predictions in the whole angular range. In double folding (DF)
calculations, the obtained normalization coefficient Nr is in the range
0.70–1.32.
Abstract: Seeking and sharing knowledge on online forums
have made them popular in recent years. Although online forums are
valuable sources of information, due to variety of sources of
messages, retrieving reliable threads with high quality content is an
issue. Majority of the existing information retrieval systems ignore
the quality of retrieved documents, particularly, in the field of thread
retrieval. In this research, we present an approach that employs
various quality features in order to investigate the quality of retrieved
threads. Different aspects of content quality, including completeness,
comprehensiveness, and politeness, are assessed using these features,
which lead to finding not only textual, but also conceptual relevant
threads for a user query within a forum. To analyse the influence of
the features, we used an adopted version of voting model thread
search as a retrieval system. We equipped it with each feature solely
and also various combinations of features in turn during multiple
runs. The results show that incorporating the quality features
enhances the effectiveness of the utilised retrieval system
significantly.
Abstract: With the increasing number of people reviewing
products online in recent years, opinion sharing websites has become
the most important source of customers’ opinions. Unfortunately,
spammers generate and post fake reviews in order to promote or
demote brands and mislead potential customers. These are notably
destructive not only for potential customers, but also for business
holders and manufacturers. However, research in this area is not
adequate, and many critical problems related to spam detection have
not been solved to date. To provide green researchers in the domain
with a great aid, in this paper, we have attempted to create a highquality
framework to make a clear vision on review spam-detection
methods. In addition, this report contains a comprehensive collection
of detection metrics used in proposed spam-detection approaches.
These metrics are extremely applicable for developing novel
detection methods.

Abstract: This paper focuses on the mathematical modeling for
solidification of Al alloy in a cube mold cavity to study the
solidification behavior of casting process. The parametric
investigation of solidification process inside the cavity was
performed by using computational solidification/melting model
coupled with Volume of fluid (VOF) model. The implicit filling
algorithm is used in this study to understand the overall process from
the filling stage to solidification in a model metal casting process.
The model is validated with past studied at same conditions. The
solidification process is analyzed by including the effect of pouring
velocity as well as natural convection from the wall and geometry of
the cavity. These studies show the possibility of various defects
during solidification process.
Abstract: Microcantilevers are the basic MEMS devices, which
can be used as sensors, actuators and electronics can be easily built
into them. The detection principle of microcantilever sensors is based
on the measurement of change in cantilever deflection or change in its
resonance frequency. The objective of this work is to explore the
analogies between mechanical and electrical equivalent of
microcantilever beams. Normally scientists and engineers working in
MEMS use expensive software like CoventorWare, IntelliSuite,
ANSYS/Multiphysics etc. This paper indicates the need of developing
electrical equivalent of the MEMS structure and with that, one can
have a better insight on important parameters, and their interrelation of
the MEMS structure. In this work, considering the mechanical model
of microcantilever, equivalent electrical circuit is drawn and using
force-voltage analogy, it is analyzed with circuit simulation software.
By doing so, one can gain access to powerful set of intellectual tools
that have been developed for understanding electrical circuits Later
the analysis is performed using ANSYS/Multiphysics - software based
on finite element method (FEM). It is observed that both mechanical
and electrical domain results for a rectangular microcantlevers are in
agreement with each other.
