Abstract: This study deals with the structural and electronic properties of ternary PdMnGe Half-Heusler alloy using the full potential linearized augmented plane wave (FP-LAPW) method based on the density functional theory (DFT) as implemented in the WIEN2k package, within the framework of generalized gradient approximation (GGA). Structural parameters, total and partial densities of states were also analyzed. The obtained result shows that the studied material is metallic in GGA treatment. The elastic constants (Cij) show that our compound is ductile, stiff and anisotropic.
Abstract: Auxetic fibrous structures and composites with negative Poisson’s ratio (NPR) have huge potential for application in ballistic protection due to their high energy absorption and excellent impact resistance. In the present research, re-entrant lozenge auxetic fibrous structures were produced through weft knitting technology using high performance polyamide and para-aramid fibres. Fabric structural parameters (e.g. loop length) and machine parameters (e.g. take down load) were varied in order to investigate their influence on the auxetic behaviours of the produced structures. These auxetic structures were then impregnated with two types of polymeric resins (epoxy and polyester) to produce composite materials, which were subsequently characterized for the auxetic behaviour. It was observed that the knitted fabrics produced using the polyamide yarns exhibited NPR over a wide deformation range, which was strongly dependant on the loop length and take down load. The polymeric composites produced from the auxetic fabrics also showed good auxetic property, which was superior in case of the polyester matrix. The experimental results suggested that these composites made from the auxetic fibrous structures can be properly designed to find potential use in the body amours for personal protection applications.
Abstract: In many applied engineering problems, structural analysis is usually conducted by assuming a rigid bed, while imposing the effect of structure bed flexibility can affect significantly on the structure response. This article focuses on investigation and evaluation of the effects arising from considering a soil-structure system in evaluation of dynamic characteristics of a steel structure with respect to elastic and inelastic behaviors. The recorded structure acceleration during Taiwan’s strong Chi-Chi earthquake on different floors of the structure was our evaluation criteria. The respective structure is an eight-story steel bending frame structure designed using a displacement-based direct method assuring weak beam - strong column function. The results indicated that different identification methods i.e. reverse Fourier transform or transfer functions, is capable to determine some of the dynamic parameters of the structure precisely, rather than evaluating all of them at once (mode frequencies, mode shapes, structure damping, structure rigidity, etc.). Response evaluation based on the input and output data elucidated that the structure first mode is not significantly affected, even considering the soil-structure interaction effect, but the upper modes have been changed. Also, it was found that the response transfer function of the different stories, in which plastic hinges have occurred in the structure components, provides similar results.
Abstract: This article presents a method of using the one
dimensional piezo-electric patch on beam model for structural
identification. A hybrid element constituted of one dimensional
beam element and a PZT sensor is used with reduced material
properties. This model is convenient and simple for identification
of beams. Accuracy of this element is first verified against a
corresponding 3D finite element model (FEM). The structural
identification is carried out as an inverse problem whereby
parameters are identified by minimizing the deviation between
the predicted and measured voltage response of the patch, when
subjected to excitation. A non-classical optimization algorithm
Particle Swarm Optimization is used to minimize this objective
function. The signals are polluted with 5% Gaussian noise to
simulate experimental noise. The proposed method is applied on
beam structure and identified parameters are stiffness and damping.
The model is also validated experimentally.
Abstract: We examine the electronic transport properties in AlxGa1-xAs/GaAs superlattices. Using the transfer-matrix technique and the exact Airy function formalism, we investigate theoretically the effect of structural parameters on the electronic energy spectra of trimer thickness barrier (TTB). Our numerical calculations showed that the localization length of the states becomes more extended when the disorder is correlated (trimer case). We have also found that the resonant tunneling time (RTT) is of the order of several femtoseconds.
Abstract: This article is about first step of structural health monitoring by identifying structural system in the presence of unknown input. In the structural system identification, identification of structural parameters such as stiffness and damping are considered. In this study, the Kalman filter (KF) design for structural systems with unknown excitation is expressed. External excitations, such as earthquakes, wind or any other forces are not measured or not available. The purpose of this filter is its strengths to estimate the state variables of the system in the presence of unknown input. Also least squares estimation (LSE) method with unknown input is studied. Estimates of parameters have been adopted. Finally, using two examples advantages and drawbacks of both methods are studied.
Abstract: This work studies the effect of thickness on structural
and electrical properties of CuAlS2 thin films grown by two stage
vacuum thermal evaporation technique. CuAlS2 thin films of
thicknesses 50nm, 100nm and 200nm were deposited on suitably
cleaned corning 7059 glass substrate at room temperature (RT). In
the first stage Cu-Al precursors were grown at room temperature by
thermal evaporation and in the second stage Cu-Al precursors were
converted to CuAlS2 thin films by sulfurisation under sulfur
atmosphere at the temperature of 673K. The structural properties of
the films were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique while
electrical properties of the specimens were studied using four point
probe method. The XRD studies revealed that the films are of
crystalline in nature having tetragonal structure. The variations of the
micro-structural parameters, such as crystallite size (D), dislocation
density ( ), and micro-strain ( ), with film thickness were
investigated. The results showed that the crystallite sizes increase as
the thickness of the film increases. The dislocation density and
micro-strain decreases as the thickness increases. The resistivity ( )
of CuAlS2 film is found to decrease with increase in film thickness,
which is related to the increase of carrier concentration with film
thickness. Thus thicker films exhibit the lowest resistivity and high
carrier concentration, implying these are the most conductive films.
Low electrical resistivity and high carrier concentration are widely
used as the essential components in various optoelectronic devices
such as light-emitting diode and photovoltaic cells.
Abstract: In this study, nuclear magnetic resonance
spectroscopy and nuclear quadrupole resonance spectroscopy
parameters of 14N (Nitrogen in imidazole ring) in N–H…O hydrogen
bonding for Histidine hydrochloride monohydrate were calculated via
density functional theory. We considered a five-molecule model
system of Histidine hydrochloride monohydrate. Also we examined
the trends of environmental effect on hydrogen bonds as well as
cooperativity. The functional used in this research is M06-2X which
is a good functional and the obtained results has shown good
agreement with experimental data. This functional was applied to
calculate the NMR and NQR parameters. Some correlations among
NBO parameters, NMR and NQR parameters have been studied
which have shown the existence of strong correlations among them.
Furthermore, the geometry optimization has been performed using
M062X/6-31++G(d,p) method. In addition, in order to study
cooperativity and changes in structural parameters, along with
increase in cluster size, natural bond orbitals have been employed.
Abstract: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effects of the
laser and partial vibration stimulation on the mice tibia with
morphological characteristics. Twenty female C57BL/6 mice (12
weeks old) were used for the experiment. The study was carried out on
four groups of animals each consisting of five mice. Four groups of
mice were ovariectomized. Animals were scanned at 0 and 2 weeks
after ovariectomy by using micro computed tomography to estimate
morphological characteristics of tibial trabecular bone. Morphological
analysis showed that structural parameters of multi-stimuli group
appear significantly better phase in BV/TV, BS/BV, Tb.Th, Tb.N,
Tb.Sp, and Tb.pf than single stimulation groups. However, single
stimulation groups didn’t show significant effect on tibia with Sham
group. This study suggests that multi-stimuli may restrain the change
as the degenerate phase on osteoporosis in the mice tibia.
Abstract: Analytical expressions of the current and angular errors, as well as the frequency characteristics of an induction converter describing the relation with its structural parameters, the core and winding characteristics are obtained. Based on estimation of the dependences obtained, a mathematical problem of parametric optimization is formulated which can successfully be used for investigating and diagnosing an induction converter.
Abstract: The modern energy-efficient houses are often founded on a thermal insulation (TI) layer placed under the building’s RC foundation slab. The purpose of the paper is to identify the potential problems of the buildings founded on TI layer from the seismic point of view. The two main goals of the study were to assess the seismic behavior of such buildings, and to search for the critical structural parameters affecting the response of the superstructure as well as of the extruded polystyrene (XPS) layer. As a test building a multi-storeyed RC frame structure with and without the XPS layer under the foundation slab has been investigated utilizing nonlinear dynamic (time-history) and static (pushover) analyses. The structural response has been investigated with reference to the following performance parameters: i) Building’s lateral roof displacements, ii) Edge compressive and shear strains of the XPS, iii) Horizontal accelerations of the superstructure, iv) Plastic hinge patterns of the superstructure, v) Part of the foundation in compression, and vi) Deformations of the underlying soil and vertical displacements of the foundation slab (i.e. identifying the potential uplift). The results have shown that in the case of higher and stiff structures lying on firm soil the use of XPS under the foundation slab might induce amplified structural peak responses compared to the building models without XPS under the foundation slab. The analysis has revealed that the superstructure as well as the XPS response is substantially affected by the stiffness of the foundation slab.
Abstract: The design specifications for calculating development and lapped splice lengths of reinforcement in concrete are derived from a conventional empirical modelling approach that correlates experimental test data using a single mathematical equation. This paper describes part of a recently completed experimental research program to assess the effects of different structural parameters on the development length requirements of modern high strength steel reinforcing bars, including the case of lapped splices in large-scale reinforced concrete members. The normalized average bond stresses for the different variations of anchorage lengths are assessed according to the general form of a typical empirical analytical model of bond and anchorage. Improved analytical modelling equations are developed in the paper that better correlate the normalized bond strength parameters with the structural parameters of an empirical model of bond and anchorage.
Abstract: The knee bracing steel frame (KBF) is a new kind of energy dissipating frame, which combines excellent ductility and lateral stiffness. In this framing system, a special form of diagonal brace connected to a knee element instead of beam-column joint, is investigated. Recently, a similar system was proposed and named as chevron knee bracing system (CKB) which in comparison with the former system has a better energy absorption characteristic and at the same time retains the elastic nature of the structures. Knee bracing can provide a stiffer bracing system but reduces the ductility of the steel frame. Chevron knee bracing can be employed to provide the desired ductility level for a design. In this article, relation between seismic performance and structural parameters of the two above mentioned systems are investigated and compared. Frames with similar dimensions but various heights in both systems are designed according to Iranian code of practice for seismic resistant design of building, and then based on a non-linear push over static analysis; the seismic parameters such as behavior factor and performance levels are compared.
Abstract: Recently, analysis and designing of the structures
based on the Reliability theory have been the center of attention.
Reason of this attention is the existence of the natural and random
structural parameters such as the material specification, external
loads, geometric dimensions etc. By means of the Reliability theory,
uncertainties resulted from the statistical nature of the structural
parameters can be changed into the mathematical equations and the
safety and operational considerations can be considered in the
designing process. According to this theory, it is possible to study the
destruction probability of not only a specific element but also the
entire system. Therefore, after being assured of safety of every
element, their reciprocal effects on the safety of the entire system can
be investigated.
Abstract: The seismic feedback experiences in Algeria have
shown higher percentage of damages for non-code conforming
reinforced concrete (RC) buildings. Furthermore, the vulnerability of
these buildings was further aggravated due to presence of many
factors (e.g. weak the seismic capacity of these buildings, shorts
columns, Pounding effect, etc.).
Consequently Seismic risk assessments were carried out on
populations of buildings to identify the buildings most likely to
undergo losses during an earthquake. The results of such studies are
important in the mitigation of losses under future seismic events as
they allow strengthening intervention and disaster management plans
to be drawn up.
Within this paper, the state of the existing structures is assessed using
"the vulnerability index" method. This method allows the
classification of RC constructions taking into account both, structural
and non structural parameters, considered to be ones of the main
parameters governing the vulnerability of the structure. Based on
seismic feedback from past earthquakes DPM (damage probability
matrices) were developed too.

Abstract: In this paper, Zinc Oxide (ZnO) thin films are deposited on glass substrate by sol-gel method. The ZnO thin films with well defined orientation were acquired by spin coating of zinc acetate dehydrate monoethanolamine (MEA), de-ionized water and isopropanol alcohol. These films were pre-heated at 275°C for 10 min and then annealed at 350°C, 450°C and 550°C for 80 min. The effect of annealing temperature and different thickness on structure and surface morphology of the thin films were verified by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). It was found that there was a significant effect of annealing temperature on the structural parameters of the films such as roughness exponent, fractal dimension and interface width. Thin films also were characterizied by X-ray Diffractometery (XRD) method. XRD analysis revealed that the annealed ZnO thin films consist of single phase ZnO with wurtzite structure and show the c-axis grain orientation. Increasing annealing temperature increased the crystallite size and the c-axis orientation of the film after 450°C. Also In this study, ZnO thin films in different thickness have been prepared by sol-gel method on the glass substrate at room temperature. The thicknesses of films are 100, 150 and 250 nm. Using fractal analysis, morphological characteristics of surface films thickness in amorphous state were investigated. The results show that with increasing thickness, surface roughness (RMS) and lateral correlation length (ξ) are decreased. Also, the roughness exponent (α) and growth exponent (β) were determined to be 0.74±0.02 and 0.11±0.02, respectively.
Abstract: In this work we study the reflection of circularly
polarised light from a nano-structured biological material found in
the exocuticle of scarabus beetles. This material is made of a stack
of ultra-thin (~5 nm) uniaxial layers arranged in a left-handed
helicoidal stack, which resonantly reflects circularly polarized light.
A chirp in the layer thickness combined with a finite absorption
coefficient produce a broad smooth reflectance spectrum. By
comparing model calculations and electron microscopy with
measured spectra we can explain our observations and quantify most
relevant structural parameters.

new aeroelastic demonstrator for the whirl flutter simulation. The
paper gives a theoretical background of the whirl flutter phenomenon
and describes the events of the whirl flutter occurrence in the
aerospace practice. The second part is focused on the experimental
research of the whirl flutter on aeroelastic similar models. Finally the
concept of the new aeroelastic demonstrator is described. The
demonstrator represents the wing and engine of the twin turboprop
commuter aircraft including a driven propeller. It allows the changes
of the main structural parameters influencing the whirl flutter
stability characteristics. It is intended for the experimental
investigation of the whirl flutter in the wind tunnel. The results will
be utilized for validation of analytical methods and software tools.
