Abstract: In this paper, experimental testing and numerical analysis were used to investigate the effect of tube thickness on the face bending for concrete filled hollow sections connected to other structural members using Extended Hollobolts. Six samples were tested experimentally by applying pull-out load on the bolts. These samples were designed to fail by column face bending. The main variable in all tests is the column face thickness. Finite element analyses were also performed using ABAQUS 6.11 to extend the experimental results and to quantify the effect of column face thickness. Results show that, the column face thickness has a clear impact on the connection strength and stiffness. However, the amount of improvement in the connection stiffness by changing the column face thickness from 5mm to 6.3mm seems to be higher than that when increasing it from 6.3mm to 8mm. The displacement at which the bolts start pulling-out from their holes increased with the use of thinner column face due to the high flexibility of the section. At the ultimate strength, the yielding of the column face propagated to the column corner and there was no yielding in its walls. After the ultimate resistance is reached, the propagation of the yielding was mainly in the column face with a miner yielding in the walls.
Abstract: The objective of positioning the fixture elements in
the fixture is to make the workpiece stiff, so that geometric errors in
the manufacturing process can be reduced. Most of the work for
optimal fixture layout used the minimization of the sum of the nodal
deflection normal to the surface as objective function. All deflections
in other direction have been neglected. We propose a new method for
fixture layout optimization in this paper, which uses the element
strain energy. The deformations in all the directions have been
considered in this way. The objective function in this method is to
minimize the sum of square of element strain energy. Strain energy
and stiffness are inversely proportional to each other. The
optimization problem is solved by the sequential quadratic
programming method. Three different kinds of case studies are
presented, and results are compared with the method using nodal
deflections as objective function to verify the propose method.
Abstract: We study dynamic instability in high-rise steel moment
resisting frames (SMRFs) subjected to synthetic long-period ground
motions caused by hypothetical huge subduction earthquakes. Since
long duration as well as long dominant periods is a characteristic of
long-period ground motions, interstory drifts may enter the negative
postyield stiffness range many times when high-rise buildings are
subjected to long-period ground motions. Through the case studies of
9 high-rise SMRFs designed in accordance with the Japanese design
practice in 1980s, we demonstrate that drifting, or accumulation of
interstory drifts in one direction, occurs at the lower stories of the
SMRFs, if their natural periods are close to the dominant periods of the
long-period ground motions. The drifting led to residual interstory
drift ratio over 0.01, or to collapse if the design base shear was small.
Abstract: This research details a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) approach to model fluid flow in a journal bearing with 8 equispaced semi-circular axial grooves. Water is used as the lubricant and is fed from one end of the bearing to the other, under pressure. The geometry of the bearing is modeled using a commercially available modeling software GAMBIT and the flow analysis is performed using a dedicated CFD analysis software FLUENT. The pressure distribution in the bearing clearance is obtained from FLUENT for various whirl ratios and is used to calculate the hydrodynamic force components in the radial and tangential direction of the bearing. These values along with the various whirl speeds can be used to do a regression analysis to determine the stiffness and damping coefficients. The values obtained are then compared with the stiffness and damping coefficients of a 3 Axial groove water lubricated journal bearing and those obtained from a FORTRAN code for a similar bearing.
Abstract: Chatter vibration has been a troublesome problem for a
machine tool toward the high precision and high speed machining.
Essentially, the machining performance is determined by the dynamic
characteristics of the machine tool structure and dynamics of cutting
process. Therefore the dynamic vibration behavior of spindle tool
system greatly determines the performance of machine tool. The
purpose of this study is to investigate the influences of the machine
frame structure on the dynamic frequency of spindle tool unit through
finite element modeling approach. To this end, a realistic finite
element model of the vertical milling system was created by
incorporated the spindle-bearing model into the spindle head stock of
the machine frame. Using this model, the dynamic characteristics of
the milling machines with different structural designs of spindle head
stock and identical spindle tool unit were demonstrated. The results of
the finite element modeling reveal that the spindle tool unit behaves
more compliant when the excited frequency approaches the natural
mode of the spindle tool; while the spindle tool show a higher dynamic
stiffness at lower frequency that may be initiated by the structural
mode of milling head. Under this condition, it is concluded that the
structural configuration of spindle head stock associated with the
vertical column of milling machine plays an important role in
determining the machining dynamics of the spindle unit.
Abstract: Because of architectural condition and structure application, sometimes mass source and stiffness source are not coincidence, and the structure is irregular. The structure is also might be asymmetric as an asymmetric bracing in plan which leads to unbalance distribution of stiffness or because of unbalance distribution of the mass. Both condition lead to eccentricity and torsion in the structure. The deficiency of ordinary code to evaluate the performance of steel structures against earthquake has been caused designing based on performance level or capacity spectrum be used. By using the mentioned methods it is possible to design a structure that its behavior against different earthquakes be predictive. In this article 5- story buildings with different percentage of asymmetric which is because of stiffness changes have been designed. The static and dynamic nonlinear analysis under three acceleration recording has been done. Finally performance level of the structure has been evaluated.
Abstract: Analytical seismic response of multi-story building
supported on base isolation system is investigated under real
earthquake motion. The superstructure is idealized as a shear type
flexible building with lateral degree-of-freedom at each floor. The
force-deformation behaviour of the isolation system is modelled by
the bi-linear behaviour which can be effectively used to model all
isolation systems in practice. The governing equations of motion of
the isolated structural system are derived. The response of the system
is obtained numerically by step-by-method under three real recorded
earthquake motions and pulse motions associated in the near-fault
earthquake motion. The variation of the top floor acceleration, interstory
drift, base shear and bearing displacement of the isolated
building is studied under different initial stiffness of the bi-linear
isolation system. It was observed that the high initial stiffness of the
isolation system excites higher modes in base-isolated structure and
generate floor accelerations and story drift. Such behaviour of the
base-isolated building especially supported on sliding type of
isolation systems can be detrimental to sensitive equipment installed
in the building. On the other hand, the bearing displacement and base
shear found to reduce marginally with the increase of the initial
stiffness of the initial stiffness of the isolation system. Further, the
above behaviour of the base-isolated building was observed for
different parameters of the bearing (i.e. post-yield stiffness and
characteristic strength) and earthquake motions (i.e. real time history
as well as pulse type motion).
Abstract: Vehicle which are turning or maneuvering at high speeds
are susceptible to sliding and subsequently deviate from desired path. In
this paper the dynamics governing the Yaw/Roll behavior of a vehicle
has been simulated. Two different simulations have been used one for
the real vehicle, for which a fuzzy controller is designed to increase its
directional stability property. The other simulation is for a hypothetical
vehicle with much higher tire cornering stiffness which is capable of
developing the required lateral forces at the tire-ground patch contact to
attain the desired lateral acceleration for the vehicle to follow the
desired path without slippage. This simulation model is our reference
model.
The logic for keeping the vehicle on the desired track in the cornering
or maneuvering state is to have some braking forces on the inner or
outer tires based on the direction of vehicle deviation from the desired
path. The inputs to our vehicle simulation model is steer angle δ and
vehicle velocity V , and the outputs can be any kinematical parameters
like yaw rate, yaw acceleration, side slip angle, rate of side slip angle
and so on. The proposed fuzzy controller is a feed forward controller.
This controller has two inputs which are steer angle δ and vehicle
velocity V, and the output of the controller is the correcting moment M,
which guides the vehicle back to the desired track. To develop the
membership functions for the controller inputs and output and the fuzzy
rules, the vehicle simulation has been run for 1000 times and the
correcting moment have been determined by trial and error. Results of
the vehicle simulation with fuzzy controller are very promising
and show the vehicle performance is enhanced greatly over the
vehicle without the controller. In fact the vehicle performance
with the controller is very near the performance of the reference
ideal model.
Abstract: In areas of low to moderate seismicity many building contents and equipment are not positively fixed to the floor or tied to adjacent walls. Under seismic induced horizontal vibration, such contents and equipment can suffer from damage by either overturning or impact associated with rocking. This paper focuses on the estimation of shock on typical contents and equipment due to rocking. A simplified analytical model is outlined that can be used to estimate the maximum acceleration on a rocking object given its basic geometric and mechanical properties. The developed model was validated against experimental results. The experimental results revealed that the maximum shock acceleration can be underestimated if the static stiffness of the materials at the interface between the rocking object and floor is used rather than the dynamic stiffness. Excellent agreement between the model and experimental results was found when the dynamic stiffness for the interface material was used, which was found to be generally much higher than corresponding static stiffness under different investigated boundary conditions of the cushion. The proposed model can be a beneficial tool in performing a rapid assessment of shock sensitive components considered for possible seismic rectification.
Abstract: This paper presents a numerical analysis of the
seismic behaviour of earth dams. Analysis is conducted for the solid
phase. It may correspond to the response of the dam before water
filling. Analysis is conducted for a simple case which concerns the
elastic response of the dam. Numerical analyses are conducted using
the FLAC3D program. The behaviour of the Shell and core of the
dam and the foundation behaviour is assumed to be elastic. Result
shows the influence of the variation of the shear modulus of the core
and shell on the seismic amplification of the dam. It can be observed
that the variation of the shearing modulus of the core leads to a
moderate increase in the dynamic amplification and the increase in
the shell shearing modulus leads to a significant increase in the
dynamic amplification.
Abstract: Composite steel shear wall is a lateral load resisting system which consists of a steel plate with concrete wall attached to one or both sides to prevent it from elastic buckling. The composite behavior is ensured by utilizing high-strength bolts. This paper investigates the effect of distance between bolts, and for this purpose 14 one-story one-bay specimens with various bolts spacing were modeled by finite element code which is developed by the authors. To verify the model, numerical results were compared with a valid experiment which illustrate proper agreement. Results depict increasing the distance between bolts would improve the seismic ever, this increase must be limited, because of large distances will cause widespread buckling of the steel plate in free subpanels between bolts and would result in no improvement. By comparing the results in elastic region, it was observed initial stiffness is not affected by changing the distance.
Abstract: A seismic isolation pad produced by utilizing the scrap
tire rubber which contains interleaved steel reinforcing cords has been
proposed. The steel cords are expected to function similar to the steel
plates used in conventional laminated rubber bearings. The scrap tire
rubber pad (STRP) isolator is intended to be used in low rise
residential buildings of highly seismic areas of the developing
countries. Experimental investigation was conducted on unbonded
STRP isolators, and test results provided useful information including
stiffness, damping values and an eventual instability of the isolation
unit. Finite element analysis (FE analysis) of STRP isolator was
carried out on properly bonded samples. These types of isolators
provide positive incremental force resisting capacity up to shear strain
level of 155%. This paper briefly discusses the force deformation
behavior of bonded STRP isolators including stability of the isolation
unit.
Abstract: This paper describes the crashworthiness assessment and improvement of tlting train made of sandwich composites. The crashworhiness assessment of tilting train was conducted according to four collision scenarios of the Korean railway safety law. Collision analysis was carried out using explicit finite element analysis code LS-DYNA 3D. The finite element model consists of 3-D finite element model and 1-D equivalent model to save the finite element modeling and calculation time. It found that the crashworthiness analysis results were satisfied with the performance requirements except the crash scenario-2. In order to meet the crashworthiness requirements for crash scenario-2, the stiffness reinforcement for the laminate composite cover and metal frames of cabmask structure were proposed. Consequentially, it has satisfied the requirement for crash scenario-2.
Abstract: This work presents a numerical model developed to
simulate the dynamics and vibrations of a multistage tractor gearbox.
The effect of time varying mesh stiffness, time varying frictional
torque on the gear teeth, lateral and torsional flexibility of the shafts
and flexibility of the bearings were included in the model. The model
was developed by using the Lagrangian method, and it was applied to
study the effect of three design variables on the vibration and stress
levels on the gears. The first design variable, module, had little effect
on the vibration levels but a higher module resulted to higher bending
stress levels. The second design variable, pressure angle, had little
effect on the vibration levels, but had a strong effect on the stress
levels on the pinion of a high reduction ratio gear pair. A pressure
angle of 25o resulted to lower stress levels for a pinion with 14 teeth
than a pressure angle of 20o. The third design variable, contact ratio,
had a very strong effect on both the vibration levels and bending
stress levels. Increasing the contact ratio to 2.0 reduced both the
vibration levels and bending stress levels significantly. For the gear
train design used in this study, a module of 2.5 and contact ratio of
2.0 for the various meshes was found to yield the best combination
of low vibration levels and low bending stresses. The model can
therefore be used as a tool for obtaining the optimum gear design
parameters for a given multistage spur gear train.
Abstract: Bionanotechnology deals with nanoscopic interactions between nanostructured materials and biological systems. Polymer nanocomposites with optimized biological activity have attracted great attention. Nanoclay is considered as reinforcing nanofiller in manufacturing of high performance nanocomposites. In current study, organomodified-nanoclay with negatively charged silicate layers was incorporated into biomedical grade silicone rubber. Nanoparticle loading has been tailored to enhance cell behavior. Addition of nanoparticles led to improved mechanical properties of substrate with enhanced strength and stiffness while no toxic effects was observed. Results indicated improved viability and proliferation of cells by addition of nanofillers. The improved mechanical properties of the matrix result in proper cell response through adjustment and arrangement of cytoskeletal fibers. Results can be applied in tissue engineering when enhanced substrates are required for improvement of cell behavior for in vivo applications.
Abstract: The choice of finite element to use in order to predict
nonlinear static or dynamic response of complex structures becomes
an important factor. Then, the main goal of this research work is to
focus a study on the effect of the in-plane rotational degrees of
freedom in linear and geometrically non linear static and dynamic
analysis of thin shell structures by flat shell finite elements. In this
purpose: First, simple triangular and quadrilateral flat shell finite
elements are implemented in an incremental formulation based on the
updated lagrangian corotational description for geometrically
nonlinear analysis. The triangular element is a combination of DKT
and CST elements, while the quadrilateral is a combination of DKQ
and the bilinear quadrilateral membrane element. In both elements,
the sixth degree of freedom is handled via introducing fictitious
stiffness. Secondly, in the same code, the sixth degrees of freedom in
these elements is handled differently where the in-plane rotational
d.o.f is considered as an effective d.o.f in the in-plane filed
interpolation. Our goal is to compare resulting shell elements. Third,
the analysis is enlarged to dynamic linear analysis by direct
integration using Newmark-s implicit method. Finally, the linear
dynamic analysis is extended to geometrically nonlinear dynamic
analysis where Newmark-s method is used to integrate equations of
motion and the Newton-Raphson method is employed for iterating
within each time step increment until equilibrium is achieved. The
obtained results demonstrate the effectiveness and robustness of the
interpolation of the in-plane rotational d.o.f. and present deficiencies
of using fictitious stiffness in dynamic linear and nonlinear analysis.
Abstract: Seismic design may require non-conventional
concept, due to the fact that the stiffness and layout of the structure
have a great effect on the overall structural behaviour, on the seismic
load intensity as well as on the internal force distribution. To find an
economical and optimal structural configuration the key issue is the
optimal design of the lateral load resisting system. This paper focuses
on the optimal design of regular, concentric braced frame (CBF)
multi-storey steel building structures. The optimal configurations are
determined by a numerical method using genetic algorithm approach,
developed by the authors. Aim is to find structural configurations
with minimum structural cost. The design constraints of objective
function are assigned in accordance with Eurocode 3 and Eurocode 8
guidelines. In this paper the results are presented for various building
geometries, different seismic intensities, and levels of energy
dissipation.
Abstract: In many buildings we rely on large footings to offer
structural stability. Designers often compensate for the lack of
knowledge available with regard to foundation-soil interaction by
furnishing structures with overly large footings. This may lead to a
significant increase in building expenditures if many large
foundations are present. This paper describes the interface material
law that governs the behavior along the contact surface of adjacent
materials, and the behavior of a large foundation under ultimate limit
loading. A case study is chosen that represents a common
foundation-soil system frequently used in general practice and
therefore relevant to other structures. Investigations include
compressing versus uplifting wind forces, alterations to the
foundation size and subgrade compositions, the role of the slab
stiffness and presence and the effect of commonly used structural
joints and connections. These investigations aim to provide the
reader with an objective design approach, efficiently preventing
structural instability.
Abstract: This study is concerned with a new adaptive impedance control strategy to compensate for unknown time-varying environment stiffness and position. The uncertainties are expressed by Function Approximation Technique (FAT), which allows the update laws to be derived easily using Lyapunov stability theory. Computer simulation results are presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy.
Abstract: The spiral angle of the elementary cellulose fibril in
the wood cell wall, often called microfibril angle, (MFA). Microfibril
angle in hardwood is one of the key determinants of solid timber
performance due to its strong influence on the stiffness, strength,
shrinkage, swelling, thermal-dynamics mechanical properties and
dimensional stability of wood. Variation of MFA (degree) in the S2
layer of the cell walls among Acacia mangium trees was determined
using small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). The length and
orientation of the microfibrils of the cell walls in the irradiated
volume of the thin samples are measured using SAXS and optical
microscope for 3D surface measurement. The undetermined
parameters in the analysis are the MFA, (M) and the standard
deviation (σФ) of the intensity distribution arising from the wandering
of the fibril orientation about the mean value. Nine separate pairs of
values are determined for nine different values of the angle of the
incidence of the X-ray beam relative to the normal to the radial
direction in the sample. The results show good agreement. The
curve distribution of scattered intensity for the real cell wall structure
is compared with that calculated with that assembly of rectangular
cells with the same ratio of transverse to radial cell wall length. It is
demonstrated that for β = 45°, the peaks in the curve intensity
distribution for the real and the rectangular cells coincide. If this
peak position is Ф45, then the MFA can be determined from the
relation M = tan-1 (tan Ф45 / cos 45°), which is precise for rectangular
cells. It was found that 92.93% of the variation of MFA can be
attributed to the distance from pith to bark. Here we shall present our
results of the MFA in the cell wall with respect to its shape, structure
and the distance from pith to park as an important fast check and yet
accurate towards the quality of wood, its uses and application.
