Abstract: This paper reports work done to improve the modeling of complex processes when only small experimental data sets are available. Neural networks are used to capture the nonlinear underlying phenomena contained in the data set and to partly eliminate the burden of having to specify completely the structure of the model. Two different types of neural networks were used for the application of Pulping of Sugar Maple problem. A three layer feed forward neural networks, using the Preconditioned Conjugate Gradient (PCG) methods were used in this investigation. Preconditioning is a method to improve convergence by lowering the condition number and increasing the eigenvalues clustering. The idea is to solve the modified problem where M is a positive-definite preconditioner that is closely related to A. We mainly focused on Preconditioned Conjugate Gradient- based training methods which originated from optimization theory, namely Preconditioned Conjugate Gradient with Fletcher-Reeves Update (PCGF), Preconditioned Conjugate Gradient with Polak-Ribiere Update (PCGP) and Preconditioned Conjugate Gradient with Powell-Beale Restarts (PCGB). The behavior of the PCG methods in the simulations proved to be robust against phenomenon such as oscillations due to large step size.
Abstract: ELS is an important ground based hardware in the
loop simulator used for aerodynamics torque loading experiments
of the actuators under test. This work focuses on improvement of the
transient response of torque controller with parameters uncertainty
of Electrical Load Simulator (ELS).The parameters of load simulator
are estimated online and the model is updated, eliminating the model
error and improving the steady state torque tracking response of
torque controller. To improve the Transient control performance the
gain of robust term of SMC is updated online using fuzzy logic
system based on the amount of uncertainty in parameters of load
simulator. The states of load simulator which cannot be measured
directly are estimated using luenberger observer with update of new
estimated parameters. The stability of the control scheme is verified
using Lyapunov theorem. The validity of proposed control scheme is
verified using simulations.
Abstract: This study describes analysis of tower grounding
resistance effected the back flashover voltage across insulator string
in a transmission system. This paper studies the 500 kV transmission
lines from Mae Moh, Lampang to Nong Chok, Bangkok, Thailand,
which is double circuit in the same steel tower with two overhead
ground wires. The factor of this study includes magnitude of
lightning stroke, and front time of lightning stroke. Steel tower uses
multistory tower model. The assumption of studies based on the
return stroke current ranged 1-200 kA, front time of lightning stroke
between 1 μs to 3 μs. The simulations study the effect of varying
tower grounding resistance that affect the lightning current.
Simulation results are analyzed lightning over voltage that causes
back flashover at insulator strings. This study helps to know causes
of problems of back flashover the transmission line system, and also
be as a guideline solving the problem for 500 kV transmission line
systems, as well.
Abstract: This work focuses on analysis of classical heat transfer equation regularized with Maxwell-Cattaneo transfer law. Computer simulations are performed in MATLAB environment. Numerical experiments are first developed on classical Fourier equation, then Maxwell-Cattaneo law is considered. Corresponding equation is regularized with a balancing diffusion term to stabilize discretizing scheme with adjusted time and space numerical steps. Several cases including a convective term in model equations are discussed, and results are given. It is shown that limiting conditions on regularizing parameters have to be satisfied in convective case for Maxwell-Cattaneo regularization to give physically acceptable solutions. In all valid cases, uniform convergence to solution of initial heat equation with Fourier law is observed, even in nonlinear case.
Abstract: This paper evaluate the multilevel modulation for
different techniques such as amplitude shift keying (M-ASK), MASK,
differential phase shift keying (M-ASK-Bipolar), Quaternary
Amplitude Shift Keying (QASK) and Quaternary Polarization-ASK
(QPol-ASK) at a total bit rate of 107 Gbps. The aim is to find a costeffective
very high speed transport solution. Numerical investigation
was performed using Monte Carlo simulations. The obtained results
indicate that some modulation formats can be operated at 100Gbps
in optical communication systems with low implementation effort
and high spectral efficiency.
Abstract: Most of the commonly used blind equalization algorithms are based on the minimization of a nonconvex and nonlinear cost function and a neural network gives smaller residual error as compared to a linear structure. The efficacy of complex valued feedforward neural networks for blind equalization of linear and nonlinear communication channels has been confirmed by many studies. In this paper we present two neural network models for blind equalization of time-varying channels, for M-ary QAM and PSK signals. The complex valued activation functions, suitable for these signal constellations in time-varying environment, are introduced and the learning algorithms based on the CMA cost function are derived. The improved performance of the proposed models is confirmed through computer simulations.
Abstract: The paper presents an investigation into the role of virtual reality and web technologies in the field of distance education. Within this frame, special emphasis is given on the building of web-based virtual learning environments so as to successfully fulfill their educational objectives. In particular, basic pedagogical methods are studied, focusing mainly on the efficient preparation, approach and presentation of learning content, and specific designing rules are presented considering the hypermedia, virtual and educational nature of this kind of applications. The paper also aims to highlight the educational benefits arising from the use of virtual reality technology in medicine and study the emerging area of web-based medical simulations. Finally, an innovative virtual reality environment for distance education in medicine is demonstrated. The proposed environment reproduces conditions of the real learning process and enhances learning through a real-time interactive simulator.
Abstract: A genetic algorithm (GA) based feature subset
selection algorithm is proposed in which the correlation structure of
the features is exploited. The subset of features is validated according
to the classification performance. Features derived from the
continuous wavelet transform are potentially strongly correlated.
GA-s that do not take the correlation structure of features into
account are inefficient. The proposed algorithm forms clusters of
correlated features and searches for a good candidate set of clusters.
Secondly a search within the clusters is performed. Different
simulations of the algorithm on a real-case data set with strong
correlations between features show the increased classification
performance. Comparison is performed with a standard GA without
use of the correlation structure.
Abstract: Laser Profiler (LP) data from aerial laser surveys have
been increasingly used as topographical inputs to numerical
simulations of flooding and inundation in river basins. LP data has
great potential for reproducing topography, but its effective usage has
not yet been fully established. In this study, flooding and inundation
are simulated numerically using LP data for the Jobaru River basin of
Japan’s Saga Plain. The analysis shows that the topography is
reproduced satisfactorily in the computational domain with urban and
agricultural areas requiring different grid sizes. A 2-D numerical
simulation shows that flood flow behavior changes as grid size is
varied.
Abstract: Since the actuator capacity is limited, in the real
application of active control systems under sever earthquakes it is
conceivable that the actuators saturate, hence the actuator saturation
should be considered as a constraint in design of optimal controllers.
In this paper optimal design of active controllers for nonlinear
structures by considering actuator saturation, has been studied. The
proposed method for designing optimal controllers is based on
defining an optimization problem which the objective has been to
minimize the maximum displacement of structure when a limited
capacity for actuator has been used. To this end a single degree of
freedom (SDF) structure with a bilinear hysteretic behavior has been
simulated under a white noise ground acceleration of different
amplitudes. Active tendon control mechanism, comprised of prestressed
tendons and an actuator, and extended nonlinear Newmark
method based instantaneous optimal control algorithm have been
used. To achieve the best results, the weights corresponding to
displacement, velocity, acceleration and control force in the
performance index have been optimized by the Distributed Genetic
Algorithm (DGA). Results show the effectiveness of the proposed
method in considering actuator saturation. Also based on the
numerical simulations it can be concluded that the actuator capacity
and the average value of required control force are two important
factors in designing nonlinear controllers which consider the actuator
saturation.
Abstract: Time delay in bilateral teleoperation system was
introduced as a sufficient reason to make the system unstable or
certainly degrade the system performance. In this paper, simulations
and experimental results of implementing p-like control scheme,
under different ranges of variable time delay, will be presented to
verify a certain criteria, which guarantee the system stability and
position tracking. The system consists of two Phantom premium 1.5A
devices. One of them acts as a master and the other acts as a slave.
The study includes deriving the Phantom kinematic and dynamic
model, establishing the link between the two Phantoms over
Simulink in Matlab, and verifying the stability criteria with
simulations and real experiments.
Abstract: Today, numerical simulation is a powerful tool to
solve various hydraulic engineering problems. The aim of this
research is numerical solutions of shallow water equations using
finite volume method for Simulations of dam break over wet and dry
bed. In order to solve Riemann problem, Roe-s approximate solver is
used. To evaluate numerical model, simulation was done in 1D and
2D states. In 1D state, two dam break test over dry bed (with and
without friction) were studied. The results showed that Structural
failure around the dam and damage to the downstream constructions
in bed without friction is more than friction bed. In 2D state, two
tests for wet and dry beds were done. Generally in wet bed case,
waves are propagated to canal sides but in dry bed it is not
significant. Therefore, damage to the storage facilities and
agricultural lands in wet bed case is more than in dry bed.
Abstract: The paper is concerned with developing stochastic delay mechanisms for efficient multicast protocols and for smooth mobile handover processes which are capable of preserving a given Quality of Service (QoS). In both applications the participating entities (receiver nodes or subscribers) sample a stochastic timer and generate load after a random delay. In this way, the load on the networking resources is evenly distributed which helps to maintain QoS communication. The optimal timer distributions have been sought in different p.d.f. families (e.g. exponential, power law and radial basis function) and the optimal parameter have been found in a recursive manner. Detailed simulations have demonstrated the improvement in performance both in the case of multicast and mobile handover applications.
Abstract: The optimal control problem for the viscoelastic melt
spinning process has not been reported yet in the literature. In this
study, an optimal control problem for a mathematical model of a
viscoelastic melt spinning process is considered. Maxwell-Oldroyd
model is used to describe the rheology of the polymeric material, the
fiber is made of. The extrusion velocity of the polymer at the spinneret
as well as the velocity and the temperature of the quench air and the
fiber length serve as control variables. A constrained optimization
problem is derived and the first–order optimality system is set up
to obtain the adjoint equations. Numerical solutions are carried out
using a steepest descent algorithm. A computer program in MATLAB
is developed for simulations.
Abstract: Fixed-point simulation results are used for the
performance measure of inverting matrices by Cholesky
decomposition. The fixed-point Cholesky decomposition algorithm
is implemented using a fixed-point reconfigurable processing
element. The reconfigurable processing element provides all
mathematical operations required by Cholesky decomposition. The
fixed-point word length analysis is based on simulations using
different condition numbers and different matrix sizes. Simulation
results show that 16 bits word length gives sufficient performance
for small matrices with low condition number. Larger matrices and
higher condition numbers require more dynamic range for a fixedpoint
implementation.
Abstract: The stability of Newtonian and Non-Newtonian extending films under local or global heating or cooling conditions are considered. The thickness-averaged mass, momentum and energy equations with convective and radiative heat transfer are derived, both for Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids (Maxwell, PTT and Giesekus models considered). The stability of the system is explored using either eigenvalue analysis or transient simulations. The results showed that the influence of heating and cooling on stability strongly depends on the magnitude of the Peclet number. Examples of stabilization or destabilization of heating or cooling are shown for Pe
Abstract: A lateral trench-gate power metal-oxide-semiconductor on 4H-SiC is proposed. The device consists of two separate trenches in which two gates are placed on both sides of P-body region resulting two parallel channels. Enhanced current conduction and reduced-surface-field effect in the structure provide substantial improvement in the device performance. Using two dimensional simulations, the performance of proposed device is evaluated and compare of with that of the conventional device for same cell pitch. It is demonstrated that the proposed structure provides two times higher output current, 11% decrease in threshold voltage, 70% improvement in transconductance, 70% reduction in specific ON-resistance, 52% increase in breakdown voltage, and nearly eight time improvement in figure-of-merit over the conventional device.
Abstract: This paper considers the autonomous navigation
problem of multiple n-link nonholonomic mobile manipulators within
an obstacle-ridden environment. We present a set of nonlinear
acceleration controllers, derived from the Lyapunov-based control
scheme, which generates collision-free trajectories of the mobile
manipulators from initial configurations to final configurations in a
constrained environment cluttered with stationary solid objects of
different shapes and sizes. We demonstrate the efficiency of the
control scheme and the resulting acceleration controllers of the
mobile manipulators with results through computer simulations of an
interesting scenario.
Abstract: The mechanical properties of granular solids are
dependent on the flow of stresses from one particle to another
through inter-particle contact. Although some experimental methods
have been used to study the inter-particle contacts in the past,
preliminary work with these techniques indicated that they do not
have the necessary resolution to distinguish between those contacts
that transmit the load and those that do not, especially for systems
with a wide distribution of particle sizes. In this research, computer
simulations are used to study the nature and distribution of contacts
in a compact with wide particle size distribution, representative of
aggregate size distribution used in asphalt pavement construction.
The packing fraction, the mean number of contacts and the
distribution of contacts were studied for different scenarios. A
methodology to distinguish and compute the fraction of load-bearing
particles and the fraction of space-filling particles (particles that do
not transmit any force) is needed for further investigation.
Abstract: There are only limited studies that directly correlate
the increase in reinforced concrete (RC) panel structural capacities in
resisting the blast loads with different RC panel structural properties
in terms of blast loading characteristics, RC panel dimensions, steel
reinforcement ratio and concrete material strength. In this paper,
numerical analyses of dynamic response and damage of the one-way
RC panel to blast loads are carried out using the commercial software
LS-DYNA. A series of simulations are performed to predict the blast
response and damage of columns with different level and magnitude
of blast loads. The numerical results are used to develop pressureimpulse
(P-I) diagrams of one-way RC panels. Based on the
numerical results, the empirical formulae are derived to calculate the
pressure and impulse asymptotes of the P-I diagrams of RC panels.
The results presented in this paper can be used to construct P-I
diagrams of RC panels with different concrete and reinforcement
properties. The P-I diagrams are very useful to assess panel capacities
in resisting different blast loads.
