Abstract: The evolution in mobile broadband technologies has allowed to increase the download rates in users considering the current services. The evaluation of technical parameters at the link level is of vital importance to validate the quality and veracity of the connection, thus avoiding large losses of data, time and productivity. Some of these failures may occur between the eNodeB (Evolved Node B) and the user equipment (UE), so the link between the end device and the base station can be observed. LTE (Long Term Evolution) is considered one of the IP-oriented mobile broadband technologies that work stably for data and VoIP (Voice Over IP) for those devices that have that feature. This research presents a technical analysis of the connection and channeling processes between UE and eNodeB with the TAC (Tracking Area Code) variables, and analysis of performance variables (Throughput, Signal to Interference and Noise Ratio (SINR)). Three measurement scenarios were proposed in the city of Bogotá using QualiPoc, where two operators were evaluated (Operator 1 and Operator 2). Once the data were obtained, an analysis of the variables was performed determining that the data obtained in transmission modes vary depending on the parameters BLER (Block Error Rate), performance and SNR (Signal-to-Noise Ratio). In the case of both operators, differences in transmission modes are detected and this is reflected in the quality of the signal. In addition, due to the fact that both operators work in different frequencies, it can be seen that Operator 1, despite having spectrum in Band 7 (2600 MHz), together with Operator 2, is reassigning to another frequency, a lower band, which is AWS (1700 MHz), but the difference in signal quality with respect to the establishment with data by the provider Operator 2 and the difference found in the transmission modes determined by the eNodeB in Operator 1 is remarkable.
Abstract: The performance of hybrid amplify and forward -
decode and forward (AF-DF) hybrid radio frequency/free space
optical (RF/FSO) communication system, that adopts M-ary pulse
position modulation (MPPM) techniques, is analyzed. Both exact
and approximate symbol-error rates (SERs) are derived. The random
variations of the received optical irradiance, produced by the
atmospheric turbulence, is modeled by the gamma-gamma (GG)
statistical distribution. A closed-form expression for the probability
density function (PDF) is derived for the whole above system
is obtained. Thanks to the use of hybrid AF-DF hybrid RF/FSO
configuration and MPPM, the effects of atmospheric turbulence is
mitigated; hence the capacity of combating atmospheric turbulence
and the transmissitted signal quality are improved.
Abstract: Multiscale entropy (MSE) is an extensively used index to provide a general understanding of multiple complexity of physiologic mechanism of heart rate variability (HRV) that operates on a wide range of time scales. Accurate selection of electrocardiogram (ECG) sampling frequency is an essential concern for clinically significant HRV quantification; high ECG sampling rate increase memory requirements and processing time, whereas low sampling rate degrade signal quality and results in clinically misinterpreted HRV. In this work, the impact of ECG sampling frequency on MSE based HRV have been quantified. MSE measures are found to be sensitive to ECG sampling frequency and effect of sampling frequency will be a function of time scale.
Abstract: A mechanical wave or vibration propagating through
granular media exhibits a specific signature in time. A coherent
pulse or wavefront arrives first with multiply scattered waves (coda)
arriving later. The coherent pulse is micro-structure independent i.e.
it depends only on the bulk properties of the disordered granular
sample, the sound wave velocity of the granular sample and hence
bulk and shear moduli. The coherent wavefront attenuates (decreases
in amplitude) and broadens with distance from its source. The
pulse attenuation and broadening effects are affected by disorder
(polydispersity; contrast in size of the granules) and have often been
attributed to dispersion and scattering. To study the effect of disorder
and initial amplitude (non-linearity) of the pulse imparted to the
system on the coherent wavefront, numerical simulations have been
carried out on one-dimensional sets of particles (granular chains).
The interaction force between the particles is given by a Hertzian
contact model. The sizes of particles have been selected randomly
from a Gaussian distribution, where the standard deviation of this
distribution is the relevant parameter that quantifies the effect of
disorder on the coherent wavefront. Since, the coherent wavefront is
system configuration independent, ensemble averaging has been used
for improving the signal quality of the coherent pulse and removing
the multiply scattered waves. The results concerning the width of the
coherent wavefront have been formulated in terms of scaling laws. An
experimental set-up of photoelastic particles constituting a granular
chain is proposed to validate the numerical results.
Abstract: The global coverage of broadband multimedia and
internet-based services in terrestrial-satellite networks demand
particular interests for satellite providers in order to enhance services
with low latencies and high signal quality to diverse users. In
particular, the delay of on-board processing is an inherent source
of latency in a satellite communication that sometimes is discarded
for the end-to-end delay of the satellite link. The frame work for this
paper includes modelling of an on-orbit satellite payload using an
agent model that can reproduce the properties of processing delays.
In essence, a comparison of different spatial interpolation methods is
carried out to evaluate physical data obtained by an GEO satellite
in order to define a discretization function for determining that
delay. Furthermore, the performance of the proposed agent and the
development of a delay discretization function are together validated
by simulating an hybrid satellite and terrestrial network. Simulation
results show high accuracy according to the characteristics of initial
data points of processing delay for Ku bands.
Abstract: Radio interference is one of the major concerns in
using the global positioning system (GPS) for civilian and military
applications. Interference signals are produced not only through
all electronic systems but also illegal jammers. Among different
types of interferences, continuous wave (CW) interference has strong
adverse impacts on the quality of the received signal. In this paper,
we make more detailed analysis for CW interference effects on
GPS signal quality. Based on the C/A code spectrum lines, the
influence of CW interference on the acquisition performance of
GPS receivers is further analysed. This influence is supported by
simulation results using GPS software receiver. As the most important
user parameter of GPS receivers, the mathematical expression of bit
error probability is also derived in the presence of CW interference,
and the expression is consistent with the Monte Carlo simulation
results. The research on CW interference provides some theoretical
gist and new thoughts on monitoring the radio noise environment and
improving the anti-jamming ability of GPS receivers.
Abstract: This paper presents a SAC-OCDMA code with zero cross correlation property to minimize the Multiple Access Interface (MAI) as New Zero Cross Correlation code (NZCC), which is found to be more scalable compared to the other existing SAC-OCDMA codes. This NZCC code is constructed using address segment and data segment. In this work, the proposed NZCC code is implemented in an optical system using the Opti-System software for the spectral amplitude coded optical code-division multiple-access (SAC-OCDMA) scheme. The main contribution of the proposed NZCC code is the zero cross correlation, which reduces both the MAI and PIIN noises. The proposed NZCC code reveals properties of minimum cross-correlation, flexibility in selecting the code parameters and supports a large number of users, combined with high data rate and longer fiber length. Simulation results reveal that the optical code division multiple access system based on the proposed NZCC code accommodates maximum number of simultaneous users with higher data rate transmission, lower Bit Error Rates (BER) and longer travelling distance without any signal quality degradation, as compared to the former existing SAC-OCDMA codes.
Abstract: Crosstalk among interconnects and printed-circuit
board (PCB) traces is a major limiting factor of signal quality in highspeed
digital and communication equipments especially when fast
data buses are involved. Such a bus is considered as a planar
multiconductor transmission line. This paper will demonstrate how
the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method provides an exact
solution of the transmission-line equations to analyze the near end
and the far end crosstalk. In addition, this study makes it possible to
analyze the rise time effect on the near and far end voltages of the
victim conductor. The paper also discusses a statistical analysis,
based upon a set of several simulations. Such analysis leads to a
better understanding of the phenomenon and yields useful
information.
Abstract: The important issue considered in the widespread deployment of Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is an efficiency of the energy consumption. In this paper, we present a study of the optimal relay station planning problems using Binary Integer Linear Programming (BILP) model to minimize the energy consumption in WSNs. Our key contribution is that the proposed model not only ensures the required network lifetime but also guarantees the radio connectivity at high level of communication quality. Specially, we take into account effects of noise, signal quality limitation and bit error rate characteristics. Numerical experiments were conducted in various network scenarios. We analyzed the effects of different sensor node densities and distribution on the energy consumption.

Abstract: The voice signal in Voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) system is processed through the best effort policy based IP network, which leads to the network degradations including delay, packet loss jitter. The work in this paper presents the implementation of finite impulse response (FIR) filter for voice quality improvement in the VoIP system through distributed arithmetic (DA) algorithm. The VoIP simulations are conducted with AMR-NB 6.70 kbps and G.729a speech coders at different packet loss rates and the performance of the enhanced VoIP signal is evaluated using the perceptual evaluation of speech quality (PESQ) measurement for narrowband signal. The results show reduction in the computational complexity in the system and significant improvement in the quality of the VoIP voice signal.
Abstract: The rising growth of the GSM cellular phone industry has tightening competition level between providers in making strategies enhancing the market shares in Indonesia. Tsel, as one of those companies, has to determine the proper strategy to sustain as well as improve the market share without reducing its operational income level. Portfolio simulation model is designed with a dynamic system approach. The result of this research is a recommendation to the company by optimizing its technological policies, services, and promotions. The tariff policies and the signal quality should not be the main focus because this company has had a large number of customers and a good infrastructural condition.
Abstract: Capacitive electrocardiogram (ECG) measurement is an attractive approach for long-term health monitoring. However, there is little literature available on its implementation, especially for multichannel system in standard ECG leads. This paper begins from the design criteria for capacitive ECG measurement and presents a multichannel limb-lead capacitive ECG system with conductive fabric tapes pasted on a double layer PCB as the capacitive sensors. The proposed prototype system incorporates a capacitive driven-body (CDB) circuit to reduce the common-mode power-line interference (PLI). The presented prototype system has been verified to be stable by theoretic analysis and practical long-term experiments. The signal quality is competitive to that acquired by commercial ECG machines. The feasible size and distance of capacitive sensor have also been evaluated by a series of tests. From the test results, it is suggested to be greater than 60 cm2 in sensor size and be smaller than 1.5 mm in distance for capacitive ECG measurement.
Abstract: Self-sensing estimates the air gap within an electro
magnetic path by analyzing the bearing coil current and/or voltage
waveform. The self-sensing concept presented in this paper has been
developed within the research project “Active Magnetic Bearings
with Supreme Reliability" and is used for position sensor fault
detection.
Within this new concept gap calculation is carried out by an alldigital
analysis of the digitized coil current and voltage waveform.
For analysis those time periods within the PWM period are used,
which give the best results. Additionally, the concept allows the
digital compensation of nonlinearities, for example magnetic
saturation, without degrading signal quality. This increases the
accuracy and robustness of the air gap estimation and additionally
reduces phase delays.
Beneath an overview about the developed concept first
measurement results are presented which show the potential of this
all-digital self-sensing concept.
Abstract: A novel approach to speech coding using the hybrid architecture is presented. Advantages of parametric and perceptual coding methods are utilized together in order to create a speech coding algorithm assuring better signal quality than in traditional CELP parametric codec. Two approaches are discussed. One is based on selection of voiced signal components that are encoded using parametric algorithm, unvoiced components that are encoded perceptually and transients that remain unencoded. The second approach uses perceptual encoding of the residual signal in CELP codec. The algorithm applied for precise transient selection is described. Signal quality achieved using the proposed hybrid codec is compared to quality of some standard speech codecs.
Abstract: This paper presents comparative study on recent
integer DCTs and a new method to construct a low sensitive structure
of integer DCT for colored input signals. The method refers to
sensitivity of multiplier coefficients to finite word length as an
indicator of how word length truncation effects on quality of output
signal. The sensitivity is also theoretically evaluated as a function of
auto-correlation and covariance matrix of input signal. The structure of
integer DCT algorithm is optimized by combination of lower sensitive
lifting structure types of IRT. It is evaluated by the sensitivity of
multiplier coefficients to finite word length expression in a function of
covariance matrix of input signal. Effectiveness of the optimum
combination of IRT in integer DCT algorithm is confirmed by quality
improvement comparing with existing case. As a result, the optimum
combination of IRT in each integer DCT algorithm evidently improves
output signal quality and it is still compatible with the existing one.
Abstract: In this paper, hybrid FDMA-TDMA access technique in a cooperative distributive fashion introducing and implementing a modified protocol introduced in [1] is analyzed termed as Power and Cooperation Diversity Gain Protocol (PCDGP). A wireless network consists of two users terminal , two relays and a destination terminal equipped with two antennas. The relays are operating in amplify-and-forward (AF) mode with a fixed gain. Two operating modes: cooperation-gain mode and powergain mode are exploited from source terminals to relays, as it is working in a best channel selection scheme. Vertical BLAST (Bell Laboratories Layered Space Time) or V-BLAST with minimum mean square error (MMSE) nulling is used at the relays to perfectly detect the joint signals from multiple source terminals. The performance is analyzed using binary phase shift keying (BPSK) modulation scheme and investigated over independent and identical (i.i.d) Rayleigh, Ricean-K and Nakagami-m fading environments. Subsequently, simulation results show that the proposed scheme can provide better signal quality of uplink users in a cooperative communication system using hybrid FDMATDMA technique.
