Abstract: A study of electromagnetic flow meter is presented in the paper. Comparison has been made between the analytical and the numerical results by the use of FEM numerical analysis (Quick Field 5.6) for determining polarization voltage through the circle cross section of the polarization transducer. Exciting and geometrical parameters increasing its effectiveness has been examined. The aim is to obtain maximal output signal. The investigations include different variants of the magnetic flux density distribution around the tube: homogeneous field of magnitude Bm, linear distribution with maximal value Bm and trapezium distribution conserving the same exciting magnetic energy as the homogeneous field.
Abstract: The paper deals with cartographic visualisation of
results of transport accessibility monitoring with the use of a semiautomated
method of unipolar anamorphosis, developed by the
authors in the GIS environment. The method is based on
transformation of distance in the map to values of a geographical
phenomenon. In the case of time accessibility it is based on
transformation of isochrones converted into the form of concentric
circles, taking into account selected topographic and thematic
elements in the map. The method is most suitable for analyses of
accessibility to or from a centre and for modelling its long-term
context.
The paper provides a detailed analysis of the procedures and
functionality of the method, discussing the issues of coordinates,
transformation, scale and visualisation. It also offers a discussion of
possible problems and inaccuracies. A practical application of the
method is illustrated by previous research results by the authors in
the filed of accessibility in Czechia.
Abstract: The removal efficiency of 4-chlorophenol with
different advanced oxidation processes have been studied. Oxidation
experiments were carried out using two 4-chlorophenol
concentrations: 100 mg L-1 and 250 mg L-1 and UV generated from a
KrCl excilamp with (molar ratio H2O2: 4-chlorophenol = 25:1) and
without H2O2, and, with Fenton process (molar ratio H2O2:4-
chlorophenol of 25:1 and Fe2+ concentration of 5 mg L-1).
The results show that there is no significant difference in the 4-
chlorophenol conversion when using one of the three assayed
methods. However, significant concentrations of the photoproductos
still remained in the media when the chosen treatment involves UV
without hydrogen peroxide. Fenton process removed all the
intermediate photoproducts except for the hydroquinone and the
1,2,4-trihydroxybenzene. In the case of UV and hydrogen peroxide
all the intermediate photoproducts are removed.
Microbial bioassays were carried out utilising the naturally
luminescent bacterium Vibrio fischeri and a genetically modified
Pseudomonas putida isolated from a waste treatment plant receiving
phenolic waste. The results using V. fischeri show that with samples
after degradation, only the UV treatment showed toxicity (IC50 =38)
whereas with H2O2 and Fenton reactions the samples exhibited no
toxicity after treatment in the range of concentrations studied. Using
the Pseudomonas putida biosensor no toxicity could be detected for
all the samples following treatment due to the higher tolerance of the
organism to phenol concentrations encountered.
Abstract: A comparison between the performance of Latin and
Arabic handwritten digits recognition problems is presented. The
performance of ten different classifiers is tested on two similar
Arabic and Latin handwritten digits databases. The analysis shows
that Arabic handwritten digits recognition problem is easier than that
of Latin digits. This is because the interclass difference in case of
Latin digits is smaller than in Arabic digits and variances in writing
Latin digits are larger. Consequently, weaker yet fast classifiers are
expected to play more prominent role in Arabic handwritten digits
recognition.
Abstract: In this paper, the noise maps for the area encircled by
the Second Ring Road in Riyadh city are developed based on real
measured data. Sound level meters, GPS receivers to determine
measurement position, a database program to manage the measured
data, and a program to develop the maps are used. A baseline noise
level has been established at each short-term site so subsequent
monitoring may be conducted to describe changes in Riyadh-s noise
environment. Short-term sites are used to show typical daytime and
nighttime noise levels at specific locations by short duration grab
sampling.
Abstract: The Bangalore City is facing the acute problem of
pollution in the atmosphere due to the heavy increase in the traffic
and developmental activities in recent years. The present study is an
attempt in the direction to assess trend of the ambient air quality
status of three stations, viz., AMCO Batteries Factory, Mysore Road,
GRAPHITE INDIA FACTORY, KHB Industrial Area, Whitefield
and Ananda Rao Circle, Gandhinagar with respect to some of the
major criteria pollutants such as Total Suspended particular matter
(SPM), Oxides of nitrogen (NOx), and Oxides of sulphur (SO2). The
sites are representative of various kinds of growths viz., commercial,
residential and industrial, prevailing in Bangalore, which are
contributing to air pollution. The concentration of Sulphur Dioxide
(SO2) at all locations showed a falling trend due to use of refined
petrol and diesel in the recent years. The concentration of Oxides of
nitrogen (NOx) showed an increasing trend but was within the
permissible limits. The concentration of the Suspended particular
matter (SPM) showed the mixed trend. The correlation between
model and observed values is found to vary from 0.4 to 0.7 for SO2,
0.45 to 0.65 for NOx and 0.4 to 0.6 for SPM. About 80% of data is
observed to fall within the error band of ±50%. Forecast test for the
best fit models showed the same trend as actual values in most of the
cases. However, the deviation observed in few cases could be
attributed to change in quality of petro products, increase in the
volume of traffic, introduction of LPG as fuel in many types of
automobiles, poor condition of roads, prevailing meteorological
conditions, etc.
Abstract: In this paper we present a new method for coin
identification. The proposed method adopts a hybrid scheme using
Eigenvalues of covariance matrix, Circular Hough Transform (CHT)
and Bresenham-s circle algorithm. The statistical and geometrical
properties of the small and large Eigenvalues of the covariance
matrix of a set of edge pixels over a connected region of support are
explored for the purpose of circular object detection. Sparse matrix
technique is used to perform CHT. Since sparse matrices squeeze
zero elements and contain only a small number of non-zero elements,
they provide an advantage of matrix storage space and computational
time. Neighborhood suppression scheme is used to find the valid
Hough peaks. The accurate position of the circumference pixels is
identified using Raster scan algorithm which uses geometrical
symmetry property. After finding circular objects, the proposed
method uses the texture on the surface of the coins called texton,
which are unique properties of coins, refers to the fundamental micro
structure in generic natural images. This method has been tested on
several real world images including coin and non-coin images. The
performance is also evaluated based on the noise withstanding
capability.
Abstract: This paper gives a novel method for improving
classification performance for cancer classification with very few
microarray Gene expression data. The method employs classification
with individual gene ranking and gene subset ranking. For selection
and classification, the proposed method uses the same classifier. The
method is applied to three publicly available cancer gene expression
datasets from Lymphoma, Liver and Leukaemia datasets. Three
different classifiers namely Support vector machines-one against all
(SVM-OAA), K nearest neighbour (KNN) and Linear Discriminant
analysis (LDA) were tested and the results indicate the improvement
in performance of SVM-OAA classifier with satisfactory results on
all the three datasets when compared with the other two classifiers.
Abstract: In this article, we propose a new surgical device for
circumferentially excision of high anal fistulas in a minimally
invasive manner. The new apparatus works on the basis of axially
rotating and moving a tubular blade along a fistulous tract
straightened using a rigid straight guidewire. As the blade moves
along the tract, its sharp circular cutting edge circumferentially
separates approximately 2.25 mm thickness of tract encircling the
rigid guidewire. We used the new set to excise two anal fistulas in a
62-year-old male patient, an extrasphincteric type and a long tract
with no internal opening. With regard to the results of this test, the
new device can be considered as a sphincter preserving mechanism
for treatment of high anal fistulas. Consequently, a major reduction
in the risk of fecal incontinence, recurrence rate, convalescence
period and patient morbidity may be achieved using the new device
for treatment of fistula-in-ano.
Abstract: In this paper, to optimize the “Characteristic Straight Line Method" which is used in the soil displacement analysis, a “best estimate" of the geodetic leveling observations has been achieved by taking in account the concept of 'Height systems'. This concept has been discussed in detail and consequently the concept of “height". In landslides dynamic analysis, the soil is considered as a mosaic of rigid blocks. The soil displacement has been monitored and analyzed by using the “Characteristic Straight Line Method". Its characteristic components have been defined constructed from a “best estimate" of the topometric observations. In the measurement of elevation differences, we have used the most modern leveling equipment available. Observational procedures have also been designed to provide the most effective method to acquire data. In addition systematic errors which cannot be sufficiently controlled by instrumentation or observational techniques are minimized by applying appropriate corrections to the observed data: the level collimation correction minimizes the error caused by nonhorizontality of the leveling instrument's line of sight for unequal sight lengths, the refraction correction is modeled to minimize the refraction error caused by temperature (density) variation of air strata, the rod temperature correction accounts for variation in the length of the leveling rod' s Invar/LO-VAR® strip which results from temperature changes, the rod scale correction ensures a uniform scale which conforms to the international length standard and the introduction of the concept of the 'Height systems' where all types of height (orthometric, dynamic, normal, gravity correction, and equipotential surface) have been investigated. The “Characteristic Straight Line Method" is slightly more convenient than the “Characteristic Circle Method". It permits to evaluate a displacement of very small magnitude even when the displacement is of an infinitesimal quantity. The inclination of the landslide is given by the inverse of the distance reference point O to the “Characteristic Straight Line". Its direction is given by the bearing of the normal directed from point O to the Characteristic Straight Line (Fig..6). A “best estimate" of the topometric observations was used to measure the elevation of points carefully selected, before and after the deformation. Gross errors have been eliminated by statistical analyses and by comparing the heights within local neighborhoods. The results of a test using an area where very interesting land surface deformation occurs are reported. Monitoring with different options and qualitative comparison of results based on a sufficient number of check points are presented.
Abstract: In this paper, the signal transmission analysis of the
semicircle-shaped via structure for the differential pairs is presented in
the frequency range up to 10 GHz. In order to improve the signal
transmission properties in the differential pairs, single via is separated
centrally into two semicircle-shaped sections, which are
interconnected with the traces of differential pairs respectively. This
via structure make possible to route differential pairs using only one
via. In addition, it can improve impedance discontinuity around its
region and then enhance the signal transmission properties in the
differential pairs. The electrical analysis such as S-parameter
calculation and eye diagram simulation has been performed to
investigate the improvement of the signal transmission property in the
differential pairs with new via structure.
Abstract: The exploration of this paper will focus on the Cshaped
transition curve. This curve is designed by using the concept
of circle to circle where one circle lies inside other. The degree of
smoothness employed is curvature continuity. The function used in
designing the C-curve is Bézier-like cubic function. This function has
a low degree, flexible for the interactive design of curves and
surfaces and has a shape parameter. The shape parameter is used to
control the C-shape curve. Once the C-shaped curve design is
completed, this curve will be applied to design spur gear tooth. After
the tooth design procedure is finished, the design will be analyzed by
using Finite Element Analysis (FEA). This analysis is used to find
out the applicability of the tooth design and the gear material that
chosen. In this research, Cast Iron 4.5 % Carbon, ASTM A-48 is
selected as a gear material.
Abstract: In the present paper, we use generalized B-Spline curve in trigonometric form on circular domain, to capture the transcendental nature of circle involute curve and uncertainty characteristic of design. The required involute curve get generated within the given tolerance limit and is useful in gear design.
Abstract: Circle grid space filling plate is a flow conditioner with a fractal pattern and used to eliminate turbulence originating from pipe fittings in experimental fluid flow applications. In this paper, steady state, incompressible, swirling turbulent flow through circle grid space filling plate has been studied. The solution and the analysis were carried out using finite volume CFD solver FLUENT 6.2. Three turbulence models were used in the numerical investigation and their results were compared with the pressure drop correlation of BS EN ISO 5167-2:2003. The turbulence models investigated here are the standard k-ε, realizable k-ε, and the Reynolds Stress Model (RSM). The results showed that the RSM model gave the best agreement with the ISO pressure drop correlation. The effects of circle grids space filling plate thickness and Reynolds number on the flow characteristics have been investigated as well.
Abstract: Aerial and satellite images are information rich. They are also complex to analyze. For GIS systems, many features require fast and reliable extraction of roads and intersections. In this paper, we study efficient and reliable automatic extraction algorithms to address some difficult issues that are commonly seen in high resolution aerial and satellite images, nonetheless not well addressed in existing solutions, such as blurring, broken or missing road boundaries, lack of road profiles, heavy shadows, and interfering surrounding objects. The new scheme is based on a new method, namely reference circle, to properly identify the pixels that belong to the same road and use this information to recover the whole road network. This feature is invariable to the shape and direction of roads and tolerates heavy noise and disturbances. Road extraction based on reference circles is much more noise tolerant and flexible than the previous edge-detection based algorithms. The scheme is able to extract roads reliably from images with complex contents and heavy obstructions, such as the high resolution aerial/satellite images available from Google maps.

Rigid origami and its corrugation patterns which are potentially applicable for creating transformable or temporary spaces is discussed to show the transition of origami from paper to thick material. Moreover, some innovative applications of origami such as eyeglass, origami stent and high tech origami based on mentioned theories and principles are showcased in section III; while some updated origami technology such as Vacuumatics, self-folding of polymer sheets and programmable matter folding which could greatlyenhance origami structureare demonstrated in Section IV to offer more insight in future origami.
Abstract: Iris localization is a very important approach in
biometric identification systems. Identification process usually is
implemented in three levels: iris localization, feature extraction, and
pattern matching finally. Accuracy of iris localization as the first step
affects all other levels and this shows the importance of iris
localization in an iris based biometric system. In this paper, we
consider Daugman iris localization method as a standard method,
propose a new method in this field and then analyze and compare the
results of them on a standard set of iris images. The proposed method
is based on the detection of circular edge of iris, and improved by
fuzzy circles and surface energy difference contexts. Implementation
of this method is so easy and compared to the other methods, have a
rather high accuracy and speed. Test results show that the accuracy of
our proposed method is about Daugman method and computation
speed of it is 10 times faster.
Abstract: The paper presents the results of a series of
experiments conducted on physical models of Quarter-circle
breakwater (QBW) in a two dimensional monochromatic wave
flume. The purpose of the experiments was to evaluate the reflection
coefficient Kr of QBW models of different radii (R) for different
submergence ratios (d/hc), where d is the depth of water and hc is the
height of the breakwater crest from the sea bed. The radii of the
breakwater models studied were 20cm, 22.5cm, 25cm, 27.5cm and
submergence ratios used varied from 1.067 to 1.667. The wave
climate off the Mangalore coast was used for arriving at the various
model wave parameters. The incident wave heights (Hi) used in the
flume varied from 3 to 18cm, and wave periods (T) ranged from 1.2 s
to 2.2 s. The water depths (d) of 40cm, 45cm and 50cm were used in
the experiments. The data collected was analyzed to compute
variation of reflection coefficient Kr=Hr/Hi (where Hr=reflected wave
height) with the wave steepness Hi/gT2 for various R/Hi
(R=breakwater radius) values. It was found that the reflection
coefficient increased as incident wave steepness increased. Also as
wave height decreases reflection coefficient decreases and as
structure radius R increased Kr decreased slightly.
Abstract: This paper presents a new sensor-based online method for generating collision-free near-optimal paths for mobile robots pursuing a moving target amidst dynamic and static obstacles. At each iteration, first the set of all collision-free directions are calculated using velocity vectors of the robot relative to each obstacle and target, forming the Directive Circle (DC), which is a novel concept. Then, a direction close to the shortest path to the target is selected from feasible directions in DC. The DC prevents the robot from being trapped in deadlocks or local minima. It is assumed that the target's velocity is known, while the speeds of dynamic obstacles, as well as the locations of static obstacles, are to be calculated online. Extensive simulations and experimental results demonstrated the efficiency of the proposed method and its success in coping with complex environments and obstacles.
Abstract: A five-class density histogram with an index named cumulative density was proposed to analyze the short-term HRV. 150 subjects participated in the test, falling into three groups with equal numbers -- the healthy young group (Young), the healthy old group (Old), and the group of patients with congestive heart failure (CHF). Results of multiple comparisons showed a significant differences of the cumulative density in the three groups, with values 0.0238 for Young, 0.0406 for Old and 0.0732 for CHF (p
