Abstract: In this paper, we propose a single sample path based
algorithm with state aggregation to optimize the average rewards of
singularly perturbed Markov reward processes (SPMRPs) with a
large scale state spaces. It is assumed that such a reward process
depend on a set of parameters. Differing from the other kinds of
Markov chain, SPMRPs have their own hierarchical structure. Based
on this special structure, our algorithm can alleviate the load in the
optimization for performance. Moreover, our method can be applied
on line because of its evolution with the sample path simulated.
Compared with the original algorithm applied on these problems of
general MRPs, a new gradient formula for average reward
performance metric in SPMRPs is brought in, which will be proved
in Appendix, and then based on these gradients, the schedule of the
iteration algorithm is presented, which is based on a single sample
path, and eventually a special case in which parameters only
dominate the disturbance matrices will be analyzed, and a precise
comparison with be displayed between our algorithm with the old
ones which is aim to solve these problems in general Markov reward
processes. When applied in SPMRPs, our method will approach a fast
pace in these cases. Furthermore, to illustrate the practical value of
SPMRPs, a simple example in multiple programming in computer
systems will be listed and simulated. Corresponding to some practical
model, physical meanings of SPMRPs in networks of queues will be
clarified.
Abstract: The importance of ensuring safe meat handling and
processing practices has been demonstrated in global reports on food
safety scares and related illness and deaths. This necessitated stricter
meat safety control strategies. Today, many countries have regulated
towards preventative and systematic control over safe meat
processing at abattoirs utilizing the Hazard Analysis Critical Control
Point (HACCP) principles. HACCP systems have been reported as
effective in managing food safety risks, if correctly implemented.
South Africa has regulated the Hygiene Management System (HMS)
based on HACCP principles applicable to abattoirs. Regulators utilise
the Hygiene Assessment System (HAS) to audit compliance at
abattoirs. These systems were benchmarked from the United
Kingdom (UK). Little research has been done them since inception as
of 2004. This paper presents a review of the two systems, its
implementation and comparison with HACCP. Recommendations are
made for future research to demonstrate the utility of the HMS and
HAS in assuring safe meat to consumers.
Abstract: A new digital transceiver circuit for asynchronous frame detection is proposed where both the transmitter and receiver contain all digital components, thereby avoiding possible use of conventional devices like monostable multivibrators with unstable external components such as resistances and capacitances. The proposed receiver circuit, in particular, uses a combinational logic block yielding an output which changes its state as soon as the start bit of a new frame is detected. This, in turn, helps in generating an efficient receiver sampling clock. A data latching circuit is also used in the receiver to latch the recovered data bits in any new frame. The proposed receiver structure is also extended from 4- bit information to any general n data bits within a frame with a common expression for the output of the combinational logic block. Performance of the proposed hardware design is evaluated in terms of time delay, reliability and robustness in comparison with the standard schemes using monostable multivibrators. It is observed from hardware implementation that the proposed circuit achieves almost 33 percent speed up over any conventional circuit.
Abstract: Glaucoma diagnosis involves extracting three features
of the fundus image; optic cup, optic disc and vernacular. Present
manual diagnosis is expensive, tedious and time consuming. A
number of researches have been conducted to automate this process.
However, the variability between the diagnostic capability of an
automated system and ophthalmologist has yet to be established. This
paper discusses the efficiency and variability between
ophthalmologist opinion and digital technique; threshold. The
efficiency and variability measures are based on image quality
grading; poor, satisfactory or good. The images are separated into
four channels; gray, red, green and blue. A scientific investigation
was conducted on three ophthalmologists who graded the images
based on the image quality. The images are threshold using multithresholding
and graded as done by the ophthalmologist. A
comparison of grade from the ophthalmologist and threshold is made.
The results show there is a small variability between result of
ophthalmologists and digital threshold.
Abstract: In this paper an attempt has been made to correlate the usefulness of electrodes made through powder metallurgy (PM) in comparison with conventional copper electrode during electric discharge machining. Experimental results are presented on electric discharge machining of AISI D2 steel in kerosene with copper tungsten (30% Cu and 70% W) tool electrode made through powder metallurgy (PM) technique and Cu electrode. An L18 (21 37) orthogonal array of Taguchi methodology was used to identify the effect of process input factors (viz. current, duty cycle and flushing pressure) on the output factors {viz. material removal rate (MRR) and surface roughness (SR)}. It was found that CuW electrode (made through PM) gives high surface finish where as the Cu electrode is better for higher material removal rate.
Abstract: A dynamic stall-corrected Blade Element-Momentum algorithm based on a hybrid polar is validated through the comparison with Sandia experimental measurements on a 5-m diameter wind turbine of Troposkien shape. Different dynamic stall models are evaluated. The numerical predictions obtained using the extended aerodynamic coefficients provided by both Sheldal and Klimas and Raciti Castelli et al. are compared to experimental data, determining the potential of the hybrid database for the numerical prediction of vertical-axis wind turbine performances.
Abstract: Biologically active peptides are of particular interest
in food science and human nutrition because they have been shown to play several physiological roles. In vitro gastrointestinal digestion of lentil and whey proteins in this study produced high angiotensin-I converting enzyme inhibitory activity with 75.5±1.9 and 91.4±2.3%
inhibition, respectively. High ACE inhibitory activity was observed in lentil after 5 days of germination (84.3±1.2%). Fractionation by
reverse phase chromatography gave inhibitory activities as high as
86.3±2.0 for lentil, 94.8±1.8% for whey and 93.7±1.7% at 5th day of germination. Further purification by HPLC resulted in several
inhibitory peptides with IC50 values ranging from 0.064 to 0.164
mg/ml. These results demonstrate that lentil proteins are a good
source of peptides with ACE inhibitory activity that can be released by germination or gastrointestinal digestion. Despite the lower bioactivity in comparison with whey proteins, incorporation of lentil proteins in functional food formulations and natural drugs look promising.
Abstract: Selection of a project among a set of possible
alternatives is a difficult task that the decision maker (DM) has to
face. In this paper, by using a fuzzy TOPSIS technique we propose a
new method for a project selection problem. After reviewing four
common methods of comparing investment alternatives (net present
value, rate of return, benefit cost analysis and payback period) we
use them as criteria in a TOPSIS technique. First we calculate the
weight of each criterion by a pairwise comparison and then we utilize
the improved TOPSIS assessment for the project selection.
Abstract: In this study a clustering technique has been implemented which is K-Means like with hierarchical initial set (HKM). The goal of this study is to prove that clustering document sets do enhancement precision on information retrieval systems, since it was proved by Bellot & El-Beze on French language. A comparison is made between the traditional information retrieval system and the clustered one. Also the effect of increasing number of clusters on precision is studied. The indexing technique is Term Frequency * Inverse Document Frequency (TF * IDF). It has been found that the effect of Hierarchical K-Means Like clustering (HKM) with 3 clusters over 242 Arabic abstract documents from the Saudi Arabian National Computer Conference has significant results compared with traditional information retrieval system without clustering. Additionally it has been found that it is not necessary to increase the number of clusters to improve precision more.
