Abstract: Many recent high energy physics calculations
involving charm and beauty invoke wave function at the origin
(WFO) for the meson bound state. Uncertainties of charm and beauty
quark masses and different models for potentials governing these
bound states require a simple numerical algorithm for evaluation of
the WFO's for these bound states. We present a simple algorithm for
this propose which provides WFO's with high precision compared
with similar ones already obtained in the literature.
Abstract: The present models and simulation algorithms of intracellular stochastic kinetics are usually based on the premise that diffusion is so fast that the concentrations of all the involved species are homogeneous in space. However, recents experimental measurements of intracellular diffusion constants indicate that the assumption of a homogeneous well-stirred cytosol is not necessarily valid even for small prokaryotic cells. In this work a mathematical treatment of diffusion that can be incorporated in a stochastic algorithm simulating the dynamics of a reaction-diffusion system is presented. The movement of a molecule A from a region i to a region j of the space is represented as a first order reaction Ai k- ! Aj , where the rate constant k depends on the diffusion coefficient. The diffusion coefficients are modeled as function of the local concentration of the solutes, their intrinsic viscosities, their frictional coefficients and the temperature of the system. The stochastic time evolution of the system is given by the occurrence of diffusion events and chemical reaction events. At each time step an event (reaction or diffusion) is selected from a probability distribution of waiting times determined by the intrinsic reaction kinetics and diffusion dynamics. To demonstrate the method the simulation results of the reaction-diffusion system of chaperoneassisted protein folding in cytoplasm are shown.
Abstract: This article discusses the customs and traditions in
Turkestan in the late XIXth and early XXth centuries. Having a long
history, Turkestan is well-known as the birthplace of many nations
and nationalities. The name of Turkestan is also given to it for a
reason - the land of the Turkic peoples who inhabited Central Asia
and united under together. Currently, nations and nationalities of the
Turkestan region formed their own sovereign states, and every year
they prove their country names in the world community. Political,
economic importance of Turkestan, which became the gold wire
between Asia and Europe was always very high. So systematically
various aggressive actions were made by several great powers. As a
result of expansionary policy of colonization of the Russian Empire -
the Turkestan has appeared.
Abstract: The aim of this paper is to present a new method
which can be used for progressive transmission of electrocardiogram
(ECG). The idea consists in transforming any ECG signal to an
image, containing one beat in each row. In the first step, the beats are
synchronized in order to reduce the high frequencies due to inter-beat
transitions. The obtained image is then transformed using a discrete
version of Radon Transform (DRT). Hence, transmitting the ECG,
leads to transmit the most significant energy of the transformed
image in Radon domain. For decoding purpose, the receptor needs to
use the inverse Radon Transform as well as the two synchronization
frames.
The presented protocol can be adapted for lossy to lossless
compression systems. In lossy mode we show that the compression
ratio can be multiplied by an average factor of 2 for an acceptable
quality of reconstructed signal. These results have been obtained on
real signals from MIT database.
Abstract: We present a new method to reconstruct a temporally
coherent 3D animation from single or multi-view RGB-D video data
using unbiased feature point sampling. Given RGB-D video data, in
form of a 3D point cloud sequence, our method first extracts feature
points using both color and depth information. In the subsequent
steps, these feature points are used to match two 3D point clouds in
consecutive frames independent of their resolution. Our new motion
vectors based dynamic alignement method then fully reconstruct
a spatio-temporally coherent 3D animation. We perform extensive
quantitative validation using novel error functions to analyze the
results. We show that despite the limiting factors of temporal and
spatial noise associated to RGB-D data, it is possible to extract
temporal coherence to faithfully reconstruct a temporally coherent
3D animation from RGB-D video data.
Abstract: This research sought to discover the forms of
promotion and dissemination of traditional local wisdom that are
used to create occupations among the elderly at Noanmueng
Community, Muang Sub-District, Baan Doong District, Udornthani
Province. The criteria used to select the research sample group were:
having a role involved in the promotion and dissemination of
traditional local wisdom to create occupations among the elderly;
being an experienced person who the residents of Noanmueng
Community find trustworthy; and having lived in Noanmueng
Community for a long time so as to be able to see the development
and change that occurs. A total of 16 persons were thus selected. Data
was gathered through a qualitative study, using semi-structured indepth
interviews. The collected data was then summarized and
discussed according to the research objectives. Finally, the data was
presented in narrative format. Results found that the identifying
traditional local wisdom of the community (which grew from the
residents’ experience and beneficial usage in daily life, passed down
from generation to generation) was the weaving of cloth and
basketry. As for the manner of promotion and dissemination of
traditional local wisdom, these skills were passed down through
teaching by example to family members, relatives and others in the
community. This was largely the initiative of the elders or elderly
members of the community. In order for the promotion and
dissemination of traditional local wisdom to create occupations
among the elderly, the traditional local wisdom should be supported
in every way through participation of the community members. For
example, establish a museum of traditional local wisdom for the
collection of traditional local wisdom in various fields, both from the
past and present innovations. This would be a source of pride for the
community, simultaneously helping traditional local wisdom to
become widely known and to create income for the community’s
elderly. Additional ways include organizing exhibitions of products
made by traditional local wisdom, finding both domestic and
international markets, as well as building both domestic and
international networks aiming to find opportunities to market
products made by traditional local wisdom.
Abstract: Biometric techniques are gaining importance for
personal authentication and identification as compared to the
traditional authentication methods. Biometric templates are
vulnerable to variety of attacks due to their inherent nature. When a
person-s biometric is compromised his identity is lost. In contrast to
password, biometric is not revocable. Therefore, providing security
to the stored biometric template is very crucial. Crypto biometric
systems are authentication systems, which blends the idea of
cryptography and biometrics. Fuzzy vault is a proven crypto
biometric construct which is used to secure the biometric templates.
However fuzzy vault suffer from certain limitations like nonrevocability,
cross matching. Security of the fuzzy vault is affected
by the non-uniform nature of the biometric data. Fuzzy vault when
hardened with password overcomes these limitations. Password
provides an additional layer of security and enhances user privacy.
Retina has certain advantages over other biometric traits. Retinal
scans are used in high-end security applications like access control to
areas or rooms in military installations, power plants, and other high
risk security areas. This work applies the idea of fuzzy vault for
retinal biometric template. Multimodal biometric system
performance is well compared to single modal biometric systems.
The proposed multi modal biometric fuzzy vault includes combined
feature points from retina and fingerprint. The combined vault is
hardened with user password for achieving high level of security.
The security of the combined vault is measured using min-entropy.
The proposed password hardened multi biometric fuzzy vault is
robust towards stored biometric template attacks.
Abstract: C-control chart assumes that process nonconformities follow a Poisson distribution. In actuality, however, this Poisson distribution does not always occur. A process control for semiconductor based on a Poisson distribution always underestimates the true average amount of nonconformities and the process variance. Quality is described more accurately if a compound Poisson process is used for process control at this time. A cumulative sum (CUSUM) control chart is much better than a C control chart when a small shift will be detected. This study calculates one-sided CUSUM ARLs using a Markov chain approach to construct a CUSUM control chart with an underlying Poisson-Gamma compound distribution for the failure mechanism. Moreover, an actual data set from a wafer plant is used to demonstrate the operation of the proposed model. The results show that a CUSUM control chart realizes significantly better performance than EWMA.
Abstract: In this article, a method has been offered to classify
normal and defective tiles using wavelet transform and artificial
neural networks. The proposed algorithm calculates max and min
medians as well as the standard deviation and average of detail
images obtained from wavelet filters, then comes by feature vectors
and attempts to classify the given tile using a Perceptron neural
network with a single hidden layer. In this study along with the
proposal of using median of optimum points as the basic feature and
its comparison with the rest of the statistical features in the wavelet
field, the relational advantages of Haar wavelet is investigated. This
method has been experimented on a number of various tile designs
and in average, it has been valid for over 90% of the cases. Amongst
the other advantages, high speed and low calculating load are
prominent.
Abstract: Energy efficient protocol design is the aim of current
researches in the area of sensor networks where limited power
resources impose energy conservation considerations. In this paper
we care for Medium Access Control (MAC) protocols and after an
extensive literature review, two adaptive schemes are discussed. Of
them, adaptive-rate MACs which were introduced for throughput
enhancement show the potency to save energy, even more than
adaptive-power schemes. Then we propose an allocation algorithm
for getting accurate and reliable results. Through a simulation study
we validated our claim and showed the power saving of adaptive-rate
protocols.
Abstract: The mosaicing technique has been employed in more and more application fields, from entertainment to scientific ones. In the latter case, often the final evaluation is still left to human beings, that assess visually the quality of the mosaic. Many times, a lack of objective measurements in microscopic mosaicing may prevent the mosaic from being used as a starting image for further analysis. In this work we analyze three different metrics and indexes, in the domain of signal analysis, image analysis and visual quality, to measure the quality of different aspects of the mosaicing procedure, such as registration errors and visual quality. As the case study we consider the mosaicing algorithm we developed. The experiments have been carried out by considering mosaics with very different features: histological samples, that are made of detailed and contrasted images, and live stem cells, that show a very low contrast and low detail levels.
Abstract: Proactive coping directed at an upcoming as opposed
to an ongoing stressor, is a new focus in positive psychology. The
present study explored the proactive coping-s effect on the workplace
adaptation after transition from college to workplace. In order to
demonstrate the influence process between them, we constructed the
model of proactive coping style effecting the actual positive coping
efforts and outcomes by mediating proactive competence during one
year after the transition. Participants (n = 100) started to work right
after graduating from college completed all the four time-s surveys
--one month before (Time 0), one month after (Time 1), three months
after (Time 2), and one year after (Time 3) the transition. Time 0
survey included the measurement of proactive coping style and
competence. Time 1, 2, 3 surveys included the measurement of the
challenge cognitive appraisal, problem solving coping strategy, and
subjective workplace adaptation. The result indicated that proactive
coping style effected newcomers- actual coping efforts and outcomes
by mediating proactive coping competence. The result also showed
that proactive coping competence directly promoted Time1-s actual
positive coping efforts and outcomes, and indirectly promoted Time
2-s and Time 3-s.
Abstract: The Taiwan government has started to promote the “Plain Landscape Afforestation and Greening Program" since 2002. A key task of the program was the payment for environmental services (PES), entitled the “Plain Landscape Afforestation Policy" (PLAP), which was certificated by the Executive Yuan on August 31, 2001 and enacted on January 1, 2002. According to the policy, it is estimated that the total area of afforestation will be 25,100 hectares by December 31, 2007. Until the end of 2007, the policy had been enacted for six years in total and the actual area of afforestation was 8,919.18 hectares. Among them, Taiwan Sugar Corporation (TSC) was accounted for 7,960 hectares (with 2,450.83 hectares as public service area) which occupied 86.22% of the total afforestation area; the private farmland promoted by local governments was accounted for 869.18 hectares which occupied 9.75% of the total afforestation area. Based on the above, we observe that most of the afforestation area in this policy is executed by TSC, and the achievement ratio by TSC is better than by others. It implies that the success of the PLAP is seriously related to the execution of TSC. The objective of this study is to analyze the relevant policy planning of TSC-s participation in the PLAP, suggest complementary measures, and draw up effective adjustment mechanisms, so as to improve the effectiveness of executing the policy. Our main conclusions and suggestions are summarized as follows: 1. The main reason for TSC-s participation in the PLAP is based on their passive cooperation with the central government or company policy. Prior to TSC-s participation in the PLAP, their lands were mainly used for growing sugarcane. 2. The main factors of TSC-s consideration on the selection of tree species are based on the suitability of land and species. The largest proportion of tree species is allocated to economic forests, and the lack of technical instruction was the main problem during afforestation. Moreover, the method of improving TSC-s future development in leisure agriculture and landscape business becomes a key topic. 3. TSC has developed short and long-term plans on participating in the PLAP for the future. However, there is no great willingness or incentive on budgeting for such detailed planning. 4. Most people from TSC interviewed consider the requirements on PLAP unreasonable. Among them, an unreasonable requirement on the number of trees accounted for the greatest proportion; furthermore, most interviewees suggested that the government should continue to provide incentives even after 20 years. 5. Since the government shares the same goals as TSC, there should be sufficient cooperation and communication that support the technical instruction and reduction of afforestation cost, which will also help to improve effectiveness of the policy.
Abstract: Whilst there is growing evidence that activity
across the lifespan is beneficial for improved health, there are
also many changes involved with the aging process and
subsequently the potential for reduced indices of health. The
nexus between health, physical activity and aging is complex
and has raised much interest in recent times due to the
realization that a multifaceted approached is necessary in
order to counteract a growing obesity epidemic. By
investigating age based trends within a population adhering to
competitive sport at older ages, further insight might be
gleaned to assist in understanding one of many factors
influencing this relationship.
BMI was derived using data gathered on a total of 6,071
masters athletes (51.9% male, 48.1% female) aged 25 to 91
years ( =51.5, s =±9.7), competing at the Sydney World
Masters Games (2009). Using linear and loess regression it
was demonstrated that the usual tendency for prevalence of
higher BMI increasing with age was reversed in the sample.
This trend in reversal was repeated for both male and female
only sub-sets of the sample participants, indicating the
possibility of improved prevalence of BMI with increasing
age for both the sample as a whole and these individual subgroups.
This evidence of improved classification in one index of
health (reduced BMI) for masters athletes (when compared to
the general population) implies there are either improved
levels of this index of health with aging due to adherence to
sport or possibly the reduced BMI is advantageous and
contributes to this cohort adhering (or being attracted) to
masters sport at older ages. Demonstration of this
proportionately under-investigated World Masters Games
population having an improved relationship between BMI and
increasing age over the general population is of particular
interest in the context of the measures being taken globally to
curb an obesity epidemic.
Abstract: The present study presents a new approach to automatic
data clustering and classification problems in large and complex
databases and, at the same time, derives specific types of explicit rules
describing each cluster. The method works well in both sparse and
dense multidimensional data spaces. The members of the data space
can be of the same nature or represent different classes. A number
of N-dimensional ellipsoids are used for enclosing the data clouds.
Due to the geometry of an ellipsoid and its free rotation in space
the detection of clusters becomes very efficient. The method is based
on genetic algorithms that are used for the optimization of location,
orientation and geometric characteristics of the hyper-ellipsoids. The
proposed approach can serve as a basis for the development of
general knowledge systems for discovering hidden knowledge and
unexpected patterns and rules in various large databases.
Abstract: This paper presents a new heuristic algorithm useful
for long-term planning of survivable WDM networks. A multi-period
model is formulated that combines network topology design and
capacity expansion. The ability to determine network expansion
schedules of this type becomes increasingly important to the
telecommunications industry and to its customers. The solution
technique consists of a Genetic Algorithm that allows generating
several network alternatives for each time period simultaneously and
shortest-path techniques to deduce from these alternatives a least-cost
network expansion plan over all time periods. The multi-period
planning approach is illustrated on a realistic network example.
Extensive simulations on a wide range of problem instances are
carried out to assess the cost savings that can be expected by
choosing a multi-period planning approach instead of an iterative
network expansion design method.
Abstract: Speech corpus is one of the major components in a
Speech Processing System where one of the primary requirements
is to recognize an input sample. The quality and details captured
in speech corpus directly affects the precision of recognition. The
current work proposes a platform for speech corpus generation using
an adaptive LMS filter and LPC cepstrum, as a part of an ANN
based Speech Recognition System which is exclusively designed to
recognize isolated numerals of Assamese language- a major language
in the North Eastern part of India. The work focuses on designing an
optimal feature extraction block and a few ANN based cooperative
architectures so that the performance of the Speech Recognition
System can be improved.
Abstract: Maintenance is one of the most important activities in
the shipyard industry. However, sometimes it is not supported by
adequate services from the shipyard, where inaccuracy in estimating
the duration of the ship maintenance is still common. This makes
estimation of ship maintenance duration is crucial. This study uses
Data Mining approach, i.e., CART (Classification and Regression
Tree) to estimate the duration of ship maintenance that is limited to
dock works or which is known as dry docking. By using the volume
of dock works as an input to estimate the maintenance duration, 4
classes of dry docking duration were obtained with different linear
model and job criteria for each class. These linear models can then be
used to estimate the duration of dry docking based on job criteria.
Abstract: The ultimate goal of this article is to develop a robust and accurate numerical method for solving hyperbolic conservation laws in one and two dimensions. A hybrid numerical method, coupling a cheap fourth order total variation diminishing (TVD) scheme [1] for smooth region and a Robust seventh-order weighted non-oscillatory (WENO) scheme [2] near discontinuities, is considered. High order multi-resolution analysis is used to detect the high gradients regions of the numerical solution in order to capture the shocks with the WENO scheme, while the smooth regions are computed with fourth order total variation diminishing (TVD). For time integration, we use the third order TVD Runge-Kutta scheme. The accuracy of the resulting hybrid high order scheme is comparable with these of WENO, but with significant decrease of the CPU cost. Numerical demonstrates that the proposed scheme is comparable to the high order WENO scheme and superior to the fourth order TVD scheme. Our scheme has the added advantage of simplicity and computational efficiency. Numerical tests are presented which show the robustness and effectiveness of the proposed scheme.
Abstract: DS-CDMA system is well known wireless
technology. This system suffers from MAI (Multiple Access
Interference) caused by Direct Sequence users. Multi-User Detection
schemes were introduced to detect the users- data in presence of
MAI. This paper focuses on linear multi-user detection schemes used
for data demodulation. Simulation results depict the performance of
three detectors viz-conventional detector, Decorrelating detector and
Subspace MMSE (Minimum Mean Square Error) detector. It is seen
that the performance of these detectors depends on the number of
paths and the length of Gold code used.
