Abstract: This paper presents a highly efficient algorithm for detecting and tracking humans and objects in video surveillance sequences. Mean shift clustering is applied on backgrounddifferenced image sequences. For efficiency, all calculations are performed on integral images. Novel corresponding exponential integral kernels are introduced to allow the application of nonuniform kernels for clustering, which dramatically increases robustness without giving up the efficiency of the integral data structures. Experimental results demonstrating the power of this approach are presented.
Abstract: In this paper we study the boundedness properties of
certain oscillatory integrals with polynomial phase. We obtain sharp
estimates for these oscillatory integrals. By the virtue of these
estimates and extrapolation we obtain Lp boundedness for these
oscillatory integrals under rather weak size conditions on the kernel
function.
Abstract: In this paper a novel algorithm is proposed to merit
the accuracy of finger vein recognition. The performances of
Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Kernel Principal Component
Analysis (KPCA), and Kernel Entropy Component Analysis (KECA)
in this algorithm are validated and compared with each other in order
to determine which one is the most appropriate one in terms of finger
vein recognition.
Abstract: Web services are pieces of software that can be invoked via a standardized protocol. They can be combined via formalized taskflow languages. The Open Knowledge system is a fully distributed system using P2P technology, that allows users to publish the setaskflows, and programmers to register their web services or publish implementations of them, for the roles described in these workflows.Besides this, the system offers the functionality to select a peer that could coordinate such an interaction model and inform web services when it is their 'turn'. In this paper we describe the architecture and implementation of the Open Knowledge Kernel which provides the core functionality of the Open Knowledge system.
Abstract: A separation-kernel-based operating system (OS) has been designed for use in secure embedded systems by applying formal methods to the design of the separation-kernel part. The separation kernel is a small OS kernel that provides an abstract distributed environment on a single CPU. The design of the separation kernel was verified using two formal methods, the B method and the Spin model checker. A newly designed semi-formal method, the extended state transition method, was also applied. An OS comprising the separation-kernel part and additional OS services on top of the separation kernel was prototyped on the Intel IA-32 architecture. Developing and testing of a prototype embedded application, a point-of-sale application, on the prototype OS demonstrated that the proposed architecture and the use of formal methods to design its kernel part are effective for achieving a secure embedded system having a high-assurance separation kernel.
Abstract: Support vector regression (SVR) has been regarded
as a state-of-the-art method for approximation and regression. The
importance of kernel function, which is so-called admissible support
vector kernel (SV kernel) in SVR, has motivated many studies
on its composition. The Gaussian kernel (RBF) is regarded as a
“best" choice of SV kernel used by non-expert in SVR, whereas
there is no evidence, except for its superior performance on some
practical applications, to prove the statement. Its well-known that
reproducing kernel (R.K) is also a SV kernel which possesses many
important properties, e.g. positive definiteness, reproducing property
and composing complex R.K by simpler ones. However, there are a
limited number of R.Ks with explicit forms and consequently few
quantitative comparison studies in practice. In this paper, two R.Ks,
i.e. SV kernels, composed by the sum and product of a translation
invariant kernel in a Sobolev space are proposed. An exploratory
study on the performance of SVR based general R.K is presented
through a systematic comparison to that of RBF using multiple
criteria and synthetic problems. The results show that the R.K is
an equivalent or even better SV kernel than RBF for the problems
with more input variables (more than 5, especially more than 10) and
higher nonlinearity.
Abstract: This paper presents a generalization kernel for gravitational
potential determination by harmonic splines. It was shown
in [10] that the gravitational potential can be approximated using a
kernel represented as a Newton integral over the real Earth body. On
the other side, the theory of geopotential approximation by harmonic
splines uses spherically oriented kernels. The purpose of this paper
is to show that in the spherical case both kernels have the same type
of representation, which leads us to conclusion that it is possible
to consider the kernel represented as a Newton integral over the real
Earth body as a kind of generalization of spherically harmonic kernels
to real geometries.
Abstract: In this paper we present a noise reduction filter for video processing. It is based on the recently proposed two dimensional steering kernel, extended to three dimensions and further augmented to suit the spatial-temporal domain of video processing. Two alternative filters are proposed - the time symmetric kernel and the time asymmetric kernel. The first reduces the noise on single sequences, but to handle the problems at scene shift the asymmetric kernel is introduced. The performance of both are tested on simulated data and on a real video sequence together with the existing steering kernel. The proposed kernels improves the Rooted Mean Squared Error (RMSE) compared to the original steering kernel method on video material.
Abstract: In this paper we introduce a novel kernel classifier
based on a iterative shrinkage algorithm developed for compressive
sensing. We have adopted Bregman iteration with soft and hard
shrinkage functions and generalized hinge loss for solving l1 norm
minimization problem for classification. Our experimental results
with face recognition and digit classification using SVM as the
benchmark have shown that our method has a close error rate
compared to SVM but do not perform better than SVM. We have
found that the soft shrinkage method give more accuracy and in some
situations more sparseness than hard shrinkage methods.
Abstract: Elastic boundary eigensolution problems are converted
into boundary integral equations by potential theory. The kernels of
the boundary integral equations have both the logarithmic and Hilbert
singularity simultaneously. We present the mechanical quadrature
methods for solving eigensolutions of the boundary integral equations
by dealing with two kinds of singularities at the same time. The methods
possess high accuracy O(h3) and low computing complexity. The
convergence and stability are proved based on Anselone-s collective
compact theory. Bases on the asymptotic error expansion with odd
powers, we can greatly improve the accuracy of the approximation,
and also derive a posteriori error estimate which can be used for
constructing self-adaptive algorithms. The efficiency of the algorithms
are illustrated by numerical examples.
Abstract: The early diagnostic decision making in industrial processes is absolutely necessary to produce high quality final products. It helps to provide early warning for a special event in a process, and finding its assignable cause can be obtained. This work presents a hybrid diagnostic schmes for batch processes. Nonlinear representation of raw process data is combined with classification tree techniques. The nonlinear kernel-based dimension reduction is executed for nonlinear classification decision boundaries for fault classes. In order to enhance diagnosis performance for batch processes, filtering of the data is performed to get rid of the irrelevant information of the process data. For the diagnosis performance of several representation, filtering, and future observation estimation methods, four diagnostic schemes are evaluated. In this work, the performance of the presented diagnosis schemes is demonstrated using batch process data.
Abstract: Web services provide significant new benefits for SOAbased
applications, but they also expose significant new security
risks. There are huge number of WS security standards and
processes. At present, there is still a lack of a comprehensive
approach which offers a methodical development in the construction
of secure WS-based SOA. Thus, the main objective of this paper is
to address this needs, presenting a comprehensive method for Web
Services Security guaranty in SOA. The proposed method defines
three stages, Initial Security Analysis, Architectural Security
Guaranty and WS Security Standards Identification. These facilitate,
respectively, the definition and analysis of WS-specific security
requirements, the development of a WS-based security architecture
and the identification of the related WS security standards that the
security architecture must articulate in order to implement the
security services.
Abstract: In comparison to the original SVM, which involves a
quadratic programming task; LS–SVM simplifies the required
computation, but unfortunately the sparseness of standard SVM is
lost. Another problem is that LS-SVM is only optimal if the training
samples are corrupted by Gaussian noise. In Least Squares SVM
(LS–SVM), the nonlinear solution is obtained, by first mapping the
input vector to a high dimensional kernel space in a nonlinear
fashion, where the solution is calculated from a linear equation set. In
this paper a geometric view of the kernel space is introduced, which
enables us to develop a new formulation to achieve a sparse and
robust estimate.
Abstract: The one-class support vector machine “support vector
data description” (SVDD) is an ideal approach for anomaly or outlier
detection. However, for the applicability of SVDD in real-world
applications, the ease of use is crucial. The results of SVDD are
massively determined by the choice of the regularisation parameter C
and the kernel parameter of the widely used RBF kernel. While for
two-class SVMs the parameters can be tuned using cross-validation
based on the confusion matrix, for a one-class SVM this is not
possible, because only true positives and false negatives can occur
during training. This paper proposes an approach to find the optimal
set of parameters for SVDD solely based on a training set from
one class and without any user parameterisation. Results on artificial
and real data sets are presented, underpinning the usefulness of the
approach.
Abstract: This paper presents the region based segmentation method for ultrasound images using local statistics. In this segmentation approach the homogeneous regions depends on the image granularity features, where the interested structures with dimensions comparable to the speckle size are to be extracted. This method uses a look up table comprising of the local statistics of every pixel, which are consisting of the homogeneity and similarity bounds according to the kernel size. The shape and size of the growing regions depend on this look up table entries. The algorithms are implemented by using connected seeded region growing procedure where each pixel is taken as seed point. The region merging after the region growing also suppresses the high frequency artifacts. The updated merged regions produce the output in formed of segmented image. This algorithm produces the results that are less sensitive to the pixel location and it also allows a segmentation of the accurate homogeneous regions.
Abstract: This paper presents an architecture of current filesystem
implementations as well as our new filesystem SpadFS and operating
system Spad with rewritten VFS layer targeted at high performance
I/O applications. The paper presents microbenchmarks and real-world
benchmarks of different filesystems on the same kernel as well as
benchmarks of the same filesystem on different kernels – enabling
the reader to make conclusion how much is the performance of
various tasks affected by operating system and how much by physical
layout of data on disk. The paper describes our novel features–most
notably continuous allocation of directories and cross-file readahead
– and shows their impact on performance.
Abstract: The k-nearest neighbors (knn) is a simple but effective method of classification. In this paper we present an extended version of this technique for chemical compounds used in High Throughput Screening, where the distances of the nearest neighbors can be taken into account. Our algorithm uses kernel weight functions as guidance for the process of defining activity in screening data. Proposed kernel weight function aims to combine properties of graphical structure and molecule descriptors of screening compounds. We apply the modified knn method on several experimental data from biological screens. The experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method.
Abstract: Steel surface defect detection is essentially one of
pattern recognition problems. Support Vector Machines (SVMs) are
known as one of the most proper classifiers in this application. In this
paper, we introduce a more accurate classification method by using
SVMs as our final classifier of the inspection system. In this scheme,
multiclass classification task is performed based on the "one-againstone"
method and different kernels are utilized for each pair of the
classes in multiclass classification of the different defects.
In the proposed system, a decision tree is employed in the first
stage for two-class classification of the steel surfaces to "defect" and
"non-defect", in order to decrease the time complexity. Based on
the experimental results, generated from over one thousand images,
the proposed multiclass classification scheme is more accurate than
the conventional methods and the overall system yields a sufficient
performance which can meet the requirements in steel manufacturing.
Abstract: Serial hierarchical support vector machine (SHSVM)
is proposed to discriminate three brain tissues which are white matter
(WM), gray matter (GM), and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). SHSVM
has novel classification approach by repeating the hierarchical
classification on data set iteratively. It used Radial Basis Function
(rbf) Kernel with different tuning to obtain accurate results. Also as
the second approach, segmentation performed with DAGSVM
method. In this article eight univariate features from the raw DTI data
are extracted and all the possible 2D feature sets are examined within
the segmentation process. SHSVM succeed to obtain DSI values
higher than 0.95 accuracy for all the three tissues, which are higher
than DAGSVM results.
Abstract: In this paper, the issue of pth moment stability of a class of stochastic neural networks with mixed delays is investigated. By establishing two integro-differential inequalities, some new sufficient conditions ensuring pth moment exponential stability are obtained. Compared with some previous publications, our results generalize some earlier works reported in the literature, and remove some strict constraints of time delays and kernel functions. Two numerical examples are presented to illustrate the validity of the main results.
