Abstract: For decades, the defense business has been plagued by
not having a reliable, deterministic method to know when the Kalman
filter solution for passive ranging application is reliable for use by the
fighter pilot. This has made it hard to accurately assess when the
ranging solution can be used for situation awareness and weapons
use. To date, we have used ad hoc rules-of-thumb to assess when we
think the estimate of the Kalman filter standard deviation on range is
reliable. A reliable algorithm has been developed at BAE Systems
Electronics & Integrated Solutions that monitors the Kalman gain
matrix elements – and a patent is pending. The “settling" of the gain
matrix elements relates directly to when we can assess the time when
the passive ranging solution is within the 10 percent-of-truth value.
The focus of the paper is on surface-based passive ranging – but the
method is applicable to airborne targets as well.
Abstract: People usually have a telephone voice, which means
they adjust their speech to fit particular situations and to blend in with
other interlocutors. The question is: Do we speak differently to
different people? This possibility has been suggested by social
psychologists within Accommodation Theory [1]. Converging toward
the speech of another person can be regarded as a polite speech
strategy while choosing a language not used by the other interlocutor
can be considered as the clearest example of speech divergence [2].
The present study sets out to investigate such processes in the course
of everyday telephone conversations. Using Joos-s [3] model of
formality in spoken English, the researchers try to explore
convergence to or divergence from the addressee. The results
propound the actuality that lexical choice, and subsequently, patterns
of style vary intriguingly in concordance with the person being
addressed.
Abstract: The effect of different combinations of response
feedback on the performance of active control system on nonlinear
frames has been studied in this paper. To this end different feedback
combinations including displacement, velocity, acceleration and full
response feedback have been utilized in controlling the response of
an eight story bilinear hysteretic frame which has been subjected to a
white noise excitation and controlled by eight actuators which could
fully control the frame. For active control of nonlinear frame
Newmark nonlinear instantaneous optimal control algorithm has been
used which a diagonal matrix has been selected for weighting
matrices in performance index. For optimal design of active control
system while the objective has been to reduce the maximum drift to
below the yielding level, Distributed Genetic Algorithm (DGA) has
been used to determine the proper set of weighting matrices. The
criteria to assess the effect of each combination of response feedback
have been the minimum required control force to reduce the
maximum drift to below the yielding drift. The results of numerical
simulation show that the performance of active control system is
dependent on the type of response feedback where the velocity
feedback is more effective in designing optimal control system in
comparison with displacement and acceleration feedback. Also using
full feedback of response in controller design leads to minimum
control force amongst other combinations. Also the distributed
genetic algorithm shows acceptable convergence speed in solving the
optimization problem of designing active control systems.
Abstract: The paper attempts to contribute to the largely
neglected social and anthropological discussion of technology development on the one hand, and to redirecting the emphasis in
anthropology from primitive and exotic societies to problems of high
relevance in contemporary era and how technology is used in
everyday life. It draws upon multidimensional models of intelligence
and ideal type formation. It is argued that the predominance of
computational and cognitive cosmovisions have led to technology alienation. Injection of communicative competence in artificially
intelligent systems and identity technologies in the coming
information society are analyzed
Abstract: In the present work, the performance of the particle
swarm optimization and the genetic algorithm compared as a typical
geometry design problem. The design maximizes the heat transfer
rate from a given fin volume. The analysis presumes that a linear
temperature distribution along the fin. The fin profile generated using
the B-spline curves and controlled by the change of control point
coordinates. An inverse method applied to find the appropriate fin
geometry yield the linear temperature distribution along the fin
corresponds to optimum design. The numbers of the populations, the
count of iterations and time to convergence measure efficiency.
Results show that the particle swarm optimization is most efficient
for geometry optimization.
Abstract: This paper describes an efficient and practical method
for economic dispatch problem in one and two area electrical power
systems with considering the constraint of the tie transmission line
capacity constraint. Direct search method (DSM) is used with some
equality and inequality constraints of the production units with any
kind of fuel cost function. By this method, it is possible to use several
inequality constraints without having difficulty for complex cost
functions or in the case of unavailability of the cost function
derivative. To minimize the number of total iterations in searching,
process multi-level convergence is incorporated in the DSM.
Enhanced direct search method (EDSM) for two area power system
will be investigated. The initial calculation step size that causes less
iterations and then less calculation time is presented. Effect of the
transmission tie line capacity, between areas, on economic dispatch
problem and on total generation cost will be studied; line
compensation and active power with reactive power dispatch are
proposed to overcome the high generation costs for this multi-area
system.
Abstract: This paper suggests a new Affine Projection (AP) algorithm with variable data-reuse factor using the condition number as a decision factor. To reduce computational burden, we adopt a recently reported technique which estimates the condition number of an input data matrix. Several simulations show that the new algorithm has better performance than that of the conventional AP algorithm.
Abstract: One of the essential components of much of DSP
application is noise cancellation. Changes in real time signals are
quite rapid and swift. In noise cancellation, a reference signal which
is an approximation of noise signal (that corrupts the original
information signal) is obtained and then subtracted from the noise
bearing signal to obtain a noise free signal. This approximation of
noise signal is obtained through adaptive filters which are self
adjusting. As the changes in real time signals are abrupt, this needs
adaptive algorithm that converges fast and is stable. Least mean
square (LMS) and normalized LMS (NLMS) are two widely used
algorithms because of their plainness in calculations and
implementation. But their convergence rates are small. Adaptive
averaging filters (AFA) are also used because they have high
convergence, but they are less stable. This paper provides the
comparative study of LMS and Normalized NLMS, AFA and new
enhanced average adaptive (Average NLMS-ANLMS) filters for noise
cancelling application using speech signals.
Abstract: We present a simple nonconforming approximation of the linear two–point boundary value problem which violates patch test requirements. Nevertheless the solutions, obtained from these type of approximations, converge to the exact solution.
Abstract: The governing differential equations of laminated
plate utilizing trigonometric shear deformation theory are derived
using energy approach. The governing differential equations
discretized by different radial basis functions are used to predict the
free vibration behavior of symmetric laminated composite plates.
Effect of orthotropy and span to thickness ratio on frequency
parameter of simply supported laminated plate is presented.
Numerical results show the accuracy and good convergence of radial
basis functions.
Abstract: This paper proposes a neural network weights and
topology optimization using genetic evolution and the
backpropagation training algorithm. The proposed crossover and
mutation operators aims to adapt the networks architectures and
weights during the evolution process. Through a specific inheritance
procedure, the weights are transmitted from the parents to their
offsprings, which allows re-exploitation of the already trained
networks and hence the acceleration of the global convergence of the
algorithm. In the preprocessing phase, a new feature extraction
method is proposed based on Legendre moments with the Maximum
entropy principle MEP as a selection criterion. This allows a global
search space reduction in the design of the networks. The proposed
method has been applied and tested on the well known MNIST
database of handwritten digits.
Abstract: Design of a constant chord propeller is presented in
this paper in order to reduce propeller-s design procedure-s costs. The
design process was based on Lock and Goldstein-s techniques of
propeller design and analysis. In order to calculate optimum chord of
propeller, chord of a referential element is generalized as whole
blades chord. The design outcome which named CS-X-1 is modeled
& analyzed by CFD methods using K-ε: R.N.G turbulence model.
Convergence of results of two codes proved that outcome results of
design process are reliable. Design result is a two-blade propeller
with a total diameter of 1.1 meter, radial velocity of 3000 R.P.M,
efficiency above .75 and power coefficient near 1.05.
Abstract: Recently, genetic algorithms (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique have attracted considerable attention among various modern heuristic optimization techniques. Since the two approaches are supposed to find a solution to a given objective function but employ different strategies and computational effort, it is appropriate to compare their performance. This paper presents the application and performance comparison of PSO and GA optimization techniques, for Thyristor Controlled Series Compensator (TCSC)-based controller design. The design objective is to enhance the power system stability. The design problem of the FACTS-based controller is formulated as an optimization problem and both the PSO and GA optimization techniques are employed to search for optimal controller parameters. The performance of both optimization techniques in terms of computational time and convergence rate is compared. Further, the optimized controllers are tested on a weakly connected power system subjected to different disturbances, and their performance is compared with the conventional power system stabilizer (CPSS). The eigenvalue analysis and non-linear simulation results are presented and compared to show the effectiveness of both the techniques in designing a TCSC-based controller, to enhance power system stability.
Abstract: In the present paper the displacement-based nonconforming quadrilateral affine thin plate bending finite element ARPQ4 is presented, derived directly from non-conforming quadrilateral thin plate bending finite element RPQ4 proposed by Wanji and Cheung [19]. It is found, however, that element RPQ4 is only conditionally unisolvent. The new element is shown to be inherently unisolvent. This convenient property results in the element ARPQ4 being more robust and thus better suited for computations than its predecessor. The convergence is proved and the rate of convergence estimated. The mathematically rigorous proof of convergence presented in the paper is based on Stummel-s generalized patch test and the consideration of the element approximability condition, which are both necessary and sufficient for convergence.
Abstract: In this paper, we develop quartic nonpolynomial
spline method for the numerical solution of third order two point
boundary value problems. It is shown that the new method gives
approximations, which are better than those produced by other spline
methods. Convergence analysis of the method is discussed through
standard procedures. Two numerical examples are given to illustrate
the applicability and efficiency of the novel method.
Abstract: In this paper, we propose a new modular approach called neuroglial consisting of two neural networks slow and fast which emulates a biological reality recently discovered. The implementation is based on complex multi-time scale systems; validation is performed on the model of the asynchronous machine. We applied the geometric approach based on the Gerschgorin circles for the decoupling of fast and slow variables, and the method of singular perturbations for the development of reductions models.
This new architecture allows for smaller networks with less complexity and better performance in terms of mean square error and convergence than the single network model.
Abstract: Aim. We have introduced the notion of order to multinormed spaces and countable union spaces and their duals. The topology of bounded convergence is assigned to the dual spaces. The aim of this paper is to develop the theory of ordered topological linear
spaces La,b, L(w, z), the dual spaces of ordered multinormed spaces
La,b, ordered countable union spaces L(w, z), with the topology of bounded convergence assigned to the dual spaces. We apply Laplace transformation to the ordered linear space of Laplace transformable
generalized functions. We ultimately aim at finding solutions to nonhomogeneous
nth order linear differential equations with constant
coefficients in terms of generalized functions and comparing different
solutions evolved out of different initial conditions.
Method. The above aim is achieved by
• Defining the spaces La,b, L(w, z).
• Assigning an order relation on these spaces by identifying a
positive cone on them and studying the properties of the cone.
• Defining an order relation on the dual spaces La,b, L(w, z) of La,b, L(w, z) and assigning a topology to these dual spaces which makes the order dual and the topological dual the same. • Defining the adjoint of a continuous map on these spaces
and studying its behaviour when the topology of bounded
convergence is assigned to the dual spaces.
• Applying the two-sided Laplace Transformation on the ordered
linear space of generalized functions W and studying some
properties of the transformation which are used in solving
differential equations.
Result. The above techniques are applied to solve non-homogeneous
n-th order linear differential equations with constant coefficients in
terms of generalized functions and to compare different solutions of the differential equation.
Abstract: In this work, we present a reliable framework to solve boundary value problems with particular significance in solid mechanics. These problems are used as mathematical models in deformation of beams. The algorithm rests mainly on a relatively new technique, the Variational Iteration Method. Some examples are given to confirm the efficiency and the accuracy of the method.
Abstract: In this paper, we are concerned with the further study for system of nonlinear equations. Since systems with inaccurate function values or problems with high computational cost arise frequently in science and engineering, recently such systems have attracted researcher-s interest. In this work we present a new method which is independent of function evolutions and has a quadratic convergence. This method can be viewed as a extension of some recent methods for solving mentioned systems of nonlinear equations. Numerical results of applying this method to some test problems show the efficiently and reliability of method.
Abstract: This paper proposes a solution to the motion planning
and control problem of a point-mass robot which is required to move
safely to a designated target in a priori known workspace cluttered
with fixed elliptical obstacles of arbitrary position and sizes. A
tailored and unique algorithm for target convergence and obstacle
avoidance is proposed that will work for any number of fixed
obstacles. The control laws proposed in this paper also ensures that
the equilibrium point of the given system is asymptotically stable.
Computer simulations with the proposed technique and applications
to a planar (RP) manipulator will be presented.
