Abstract: Medical image segmentation based on image smoothing followed by edge detection assumes a great degree of importance in the field of Image Processing. In this regard, this paper proposes a novel algorithm for medical image segmentation based on vigorous smoothening by identifying the type of noise and edge diction ideology which seems to be a boom in medical image diagnosis. The main objective of this algorithm is to consider a particular medical image as input and make the preprocessing to remove the noise content by employing suitable filter after identifying the type of noise and finally carrying out edge detection for image segmentation. The algorithm consists of three parts. First, identifying the type of noise present in the medical image as additive, multiplicative or impulsive by analysis of local histograms and denoising it by employing Median, Gaussian or Frost filter. Second, edge detection of the filtered medical image is carried out using Canny edge detection technique. And third part is about the segmentation of edge detected medical image by the method of Normalized Cut Eigen Vectors. The method is validated through experiments on real images. The proposed algorithm has been simulated on MATLAB platform. The results obtained by the simulation shows that the proposed algorithm is very effective which can deal with low quality or marginal vague images which has high spatial redundancy, low contrast and biggish noise, and has a potential of certain practical use of medical image diagnosis.
Abstract: Postgraduate education is generally aimed at providing in-depth knowledge and understanding that include general philosophy in the world sciences, management, technologies, applications and other elements closely related to specific areas. In most universities, besides core and non-core subjects, a thesis is one of the requirements for the postgraduate student to accomplish before graduating. This paper reports on the empirical investigation into attributes that are associated with the obstacles to thesis accomplishment among postgraduate students. Using the quantitative approach the experiences of postgraduate students were tapped. Findings clearly revealed that information seeking, writing skills and other factors which refer to supervisor and time management, in particular, are recognized as contributory factors which positively or negatively influence postgraduates’ thesis accomplishment. Among these, writing skills dimensions were found to be the most difficult process in thesis accomplishment compared to information seeking and other factors. This pessimistic indication has provided some implications not only for the students but supervisors and institutions as a whole.
Abstract: The present paper deals with the most adopted technical
solutions for the enhancement of the lift force of a wing. In fact,
during several flight conditions (such as take off and landing), the
lift force needs to be dramatically enhanced. Both trailing edge
devices (such as flaps) and leading edge ones (such as slats) are
described. Finally, the most advanced aerodynamic solutions to avoid
the separation of the boundary layer from aircraft wings at high angles
of attack are reviewed.

Focussing on the extraction and the meticulous exploitation of the semantic structure of documents, we obtain a meaningful contextual tagging corresponding to different unit types (title, chapter, section, enumeration, etc.).
Abstract: This paper investigates the effects of knowledge-based acceleration feedback control integrated with Automatic Generation Control (AGC) to enhance the quality of frequency control of governing system. The Intelligent Acceleration Feedback Controller (IAFC) is proposed to counter the over and under frequency occurrences due to major load change in power system network. Therefore, generator tripping and load shedding operations can be reduced. Meanwhile, the integration of IAFC with AGC, a well known Load-Frequency Control (LFC) is essential to ensure the system frequency is restored to the nominal value. Computer simulations of frequency response of governing system are used to optimize the parameters of IAFC. As a result, there is substantial improvement on the LFC of governing system that employing the proposed control strategy.
Abstract: In this paper, three types of defected ground structure
(DGS) units which are triangular-head (TH), rectangular-head (RH)
and U-shape (US) are investigated. They are further used to low-pass
and band-pass filters designs (LPF and BPF) and the obtained
performances are examined. The LPF employing RH-DGS geometry
presents the advantages of compact size, low-insertion loss and wide
stopband compared to the other filters. It provides cutoff frequency of
2.5 GHz, largest rejection band width of 20 dB from 2.98 to 8.76
GHz, smallest transition region and smallest sharpness of the cutoff
frequency. The BPF based on RH-DGS has the highest bandwidth
(BW) of about 0.74 GHz and the lowest center frequency of 3.24
GHz, whereas the other BPFs have BWs less than 0.7 GHz.
Abstract: This paper deals with a high-order accurate Runge
Kutta Discontinuous Galerkin (RKDG) method for the numerical
solution of the wave equation, which is one of the simple case of a
linear hyperbolic partial differential equation. Nodal DG method is
used for a finite element space discretization in 'x' by discontinuous
approximations. This method combines mainly two key ideas which
are based on the finite volume and finite element methods. The
physics of wave propagation being accounted for by means of
Riemann problems and accuracy is obtained by means of high-order
polynomial approximations within the elements. High order accurate
Low Storage Explicit Runge Kutta (LSERK) method is used for
temporal discretization in 't' that allows the method to be nonlinearly
stable regardless of its accuracy. The resulting RKDG
methods are stable and high-order accurate. The L1 ,L2 and L∞ error
norm analysis shows that the scheme is highly accurate and effective.
Hence, the method is well suited to achieve high order accurate
solution for the scalar wave equation and other hyperbolic equations.
Abstract: Creativity is often based on an unorthodox
recombination of knowledge; in fact: 80% of all innovations use
given knowledge and put it into a new combination. Cross-industry
innovations follow this way of thinking and bring together problems
and solution ideas from different industries. Therefore analogies and
search strategies have to be developed. Taking this path, the
questions where to search, what to search and how to search have to
be answered. Afterwards, the gathered information can be used
within a planned search process. Identified solution ideas have to be
assessed and analyzed in detail for the success promising adaption
planning.
Abstract: Artificial Intelligence based gaming is an interesting topic in the state-of-art technology. This paper presents an automation of a tradition Omani game, called Al-Hawalees. Its related issues are resolved and implemented using artificial intelligence approach. An AI approach called mini-max procedure is incorporated to make a diverse budges of the on-line gaming. If number of moves increase, time complexity will be increased in terms of propositionally. In order to tackle the time and space complexities, we have employed a back propagation neural network (BPNN) to train in off-line to make a decision for resources required to fulfill the automation of the game. We have utilized Leverberg- Marquardt training in order to get the rapid response during the gaming. A set of optimal moves is determined by the on-line back propagation training fashioned with alpha-beta pruning. The results and analyses reveal that the proposed scheme will be easily incorporated in the on-line scenario with one player against the system.
Abstract: Sedimentation process resulting from soil erosion in
the water basin especially in arid and semi-arid where poor
vegetation cover in the slope of the mountains upstream could
contribute to sediment formation. The consequence of sedimentation
not only makes considerable change in the morphology of the river
and the hydraulic characteristics but would also have a major
challenge for the operation and maintenance of the canal network
which depend on water flow to meet the stakeholder-s requirements.
For this reason mathematical modeling can be used to simulate the
effective factors on scouring, sediment transport and their settling
along the waterways. This is particularly important behind the
reservoirs which enable the operators to estimate the useful life of
these hydraulic structures. The aim of this paper is to simulate the
sedimentation and erosion in the eastern and western water intake
structures of the Dez Diversion weir using GSTARS-3 software. This
is done to estimate the sedimentation and investigate the ways in
which to optimize the process and minimize the operational
problems. Results indicated that the at the furthest point upstream of
the diversion weir, the coarser sediment grains tended to settle. The
reason for this is the construction of the phantom bridge and the
outstanding rocks just upstream of the structure. The construction of
these along the river course has reduced the momentum energy
require to push the sediment loads and make it possible for them to
settle wherever the river regime allows it. Results further indicated a
trend for the sediment size in such a way that as the focus of study
shifts downstream the size of grains get smaller and vice versa. It
was also found that the finding of the GSTARS-3 had a close
proximity with the sets of the observed data. This suggests that the
software is a powerful analytical tool which can be applied in the
river engineering project with a minimum of costs and relatively
accurate results.
Abstract: One main drawback of intrusion detection system is the
inability of detecting new attacks which do not have known
signatures. In this paper we discuss an intrusion detection method
that proposes independent component analysis (ICA) based feature
selection heuristics and using rough fuzzy for clustering data. ICA is
to separate these independent components (ICs) from the monitored
variables. Rough set has to decrease the amount of data and get rid of
redundancy and Fuzzy methods allow objects to belong to several
clusters simultaneously, with different degrees of membership. Our
approach allows us to recognize not only known attacks but also to
detect activity that may be the result of a new, unknown attack. The

Abstract: The Application of e-health solutions has brought superb advancements in the health care industry. E-health solutions have already been embraced in the industrialized countries. In an effort to catch up with the growth, the developing countries have strived to revolutionize the healthcare industry by use of Information technology in different ways. Based on a technology assessment carried out in Kenya – one of the developing countries – and using multiple case studies in Nyanza Province, this work focuses on an investigation on how five rural hospitals are adapting to the technology shift. The issues examined include the ICT infrastructure and e-health technologies in place, the knowledge of participants in terms of benefits gained through the use of ICT and the challenges posing barriers to the use of ICT technologies in these hospitals. The results reveal that the ICT infrastructure in place is inadequate for e-health implementations as a result to various challenges that exist. Consequently, suggestions on how to tackle the various challenges have been addressed in this paper.
Abstract: In non destructive testing by radiography, a perfect
knowledge of the weld defect shape is an essential step to
appreciate the quality of the weld and make decision on its
acceptability or rejection. Because of the complex nature of the
considered images, and in order that the detected defect region
represents the most accurately possible the real defect, the choice
of thresholding methods must be done judiciously. In this paper,
performance criteria are used to conduct a comparative study of
four non parametric histogram thresholding methods for automatic
extraction of weld defect in radiographic images.
Abstract: Recently in the field of bridges that are newly built or
repaired, fast construction is required more than ever. For these
reasons, precast prefabricated bridge that enables rapid construction is
actively discussed and studied today. In South Korea, it is called
modular bridge. Cross beam is an integral component of modular
bridge. It functions for load distribution, reduction of bending
moment, resistance of horizontal strength on lateral upper structure. In
this study, the structural characteristics of domestic and foreign cross
beam types were compared. Based on this, alternative cross beam
connection types suitable for modular bridge were selected. And
bulb-T girder specimens were fabricated with each type of connection.
The behavior of each specimen was analyzed under static loading, and
cross beam connection type which is expected to be best suited to
modular bridge proposed.
Abstract: BRI-STARS (BRIdge Stream Tube model for Alluvial
River Simulation) program was used to investigate the scour depth around bridge piers in some of the major river systems in Iran. Model
calibration was performed by collecting different field data. Field data are cataloged on three categories, first group of bridges that
their rivers bed are formed by fine material, second group of bridges
that their rivers bed are formed by sand material, and finally bridges that their rivers bed are formed by gravel or cobble materials.
Verification was performed with some field data in Fars Province. Results show that for wide piers, computed scour depth is more than
measured one. In gravel bed streams, computed scour depth is greater
than measured scour depth, the reason is due to formation of armor layer on bed of channel. Once this layer is eroded, the computed
scour depth is close to the measured one.
Abstract: In this paper we propose a novel method for human
face segmentation using the elliptical structure of the human head. It
makes use of the information present in the edge map of the image.
In this approach we use the fact that the eigenvalues of covariance
matrix represent the elliptical structure. The large and small
eigenvalues of covariance matrix are associated with major and
minor axial lengths of an ellipse. The other elliptical parameters are
used to identify the centre and orientation of the face. Since an
Elliptical Hough Transform requires 5D Hough Space, the Circular
Hough Transform (CHT) is used to evaluate the elliptical parameters.
Sparse matrix technique is used to perform CHT, as it squeeze zero
elements, and have only a small number of non-zero elements,
thereby having an advantage of less storage space and computational
time. Neighborhood suppression scheme is used to identify the valid
Hough peaks. The accurate position of the circumference pixels for
occluded and distorted ellipses is identified using Bresenham-s
Raster Scan Algorithm which uses the geometrical symmetry
properties. This method does not require the evaluation of tangents
for curvature contours, which are very sensitive to noise. The method
has been evaluated on several images with different face orientations.
Abstract: The in vitro culture procedure of purple nutsedge
(Cyperus rotundus L.) for multiple shoot induction and tuber
formation was established. Multiple shoots were significantly
induced from a single shoot of about 0.5 – 0.8 cm long, on Murashige
and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with 4.44 μM 6-
benzyladinine (BA) alone or in combination with 2.85 μM 1-
indoleacetic acid (IAA), providing 17.6 and 15.3 shoots per explant
with 31.2 and 27.5 leaves per explant, respectively, within 6 weeks of
culturing. Moreover, MS medium supplemented with 4.44 μM BA
and 2.85 μM IAA was suitable for tuber induction, obtaining 5.9
tubers with 3.4 rhizomes per explant. In combination with ancymidol
and higher concentration of sucrose, 11.1 μM BA and 60 g/L sucrose
or 11.1 μM BA, 7.8 μM ancymidol and 60 g/L sucrose induced 3.5
tubers with 1.6 rhizomes or 3.5 tubers without rhizome, respectively.
However, MS medium containing 3.9 or 7.8 μM ancymidol in
combination with either 60 or 80 g/L sucrose enchanced significant
root formation at 20.9 – 23.6 roots per explant.
Abstract: Contact centres have been exemplars of scientific management in the discipline of operations management for more than a decade now. With the movement of industries from a resource based economy to knowledge based economy businesses have started to realize the customer eccentricity being the key to sustainability amidst high velocity of the market. However, as technologies have converged and advanced, so have the contact centres. Contact Centres have redirected the supply chains and the concept of retailing is highly diminished due to over exaggeration of cost reduction strategies. In conditions of high environmental velocity together with services featuring considerable information intensity contact centres will require up to date and enlightened agents to satisfy the demands placed upon them by those requesting their services. In this paper we examine salient factors such as Power Distance, Knowledge structures and the dynamics of job specialisation and enlargement to suggest critical success factors in the domain of contact centres.
Abstract: Single crystals of Magnesium alloys such as pure Mg,
Mg-1Zn-0.5Y, Mg-0.1Y, and Mg-0.1Ce alloys were successfully
fabricated in this study by employing the modified Bridgman method.
To determine the exact orientation of crystals, pole figure
measurement using X-ray diffraction were carried out on each single
crystal. Hardness and compression tests were conducted followed by
subsequent recrysatllization annealing. Recrystallization kinetics of
Mg alloy single crystals has been investigated. Fabricated single
crystals were cut into rectangular shaped specimen and solution
treated at 400oC for 24 hrs, and then deformed in compression mode
by 30% reduction. Annealing treatment for recrystallization has been
conducted on these cold-rolled plates at temperatures of 300oC for
various times from 1 to 20 mins. The microstructure observation and
hardness measurement conducted on the recrystallized specimens
revealed that static recrystallization of ternary alloy single crystal was
very slow, while recrystallization behavior of binary alloy single
crystals appeared to be very fast.
Abstract: This paper aims at numerically analysing the effect
of an active flow control (AFC) by a vortex generator jet (VGJ)
submerged in a boundary layer via Chimera Grids and Detached-
Eddy Simulation (DES). The performance of DES results are
judged against Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) and
compared with the experiments that showed an unsteady vortex
motion downstream of VGJ. Experimental results showed that
the mechanism of embedding logitudinal vortex structure in the
main stream flow is quite effective in increasing the near wall
momentum of separated aircraft wing. In order to simulate such
a flow configuration together with the VGJ, an efficient numerical
approach is required. This requirement is fulfilled by performing
the DES simulation over the flat plate using the DLR TAU Code.
The DES predictions identify the vortex region via smooth hybrid
length scale and predict the unsteady vortex motion observed in
the experiments. The DES results also showed that the sufficient
grid refinement in the vortex region resolves the turbulent scales
downstream of the VGJ, the spatial vortex core postion and nondimensional
momentum coefficient RVx .
