Abstract: The study investigates the mixing performance of
electrokinetically-driven power-law fluids in a microchannel
containing patterned trapezoid blocks. The effects of the geometry
parameters of the patterned trapezoid blocks and the flow behavior
index in the power-law model on the mixing efficiency within the
microchannel are explored. The results show that the mixing efficiency
can be improved by increasing the width of the blocks and extending
the length of upper surface of the blocks. In addition, the results show
that the mixing efficiency increases with an increasing flow behavior
index. Furthermore, it is shown that a heterogeneous patterning of the
zeta potential on the upper surfaces of the trapezoid blocks prompts
the formation of local flow recirculations, and therefore improves the
mixing efficiency. Consequently, it is shown that the mixing
performance improves with an increasing magnitude of the
heterogeneous surface zeta potential.
Abstract: An original Direct Numerical Simulation (DNS) method to tackle the problem of particulate flows at moderate to high concentration and finite Reynolds number is presented. Our method is built on the framework established by Glowinski and his coworkers [1] in the sense that we use their Distributed Lagrange Multiplier/Fictitious Domain (DLM/FD) formulation and their operator-splitting idea but differs in the treatment of particle collisions. The novelty of our contribution relies on replacing the simple artificial repulsive force based collision model usually employed in the literature by an efficient Discrete Element Method (DEM) granular solver. The use of our DEM solver enables us to consider particles of arbitrary shape (at least convex) and to account for actual contacts, in the sense that particles actually touch each other, in contrast with the simple repulsive force based collision model. We recently upgraded our serial code, GRIFF 1 [2], to full MPI capabilities. Our new code, PeliGRIFF 2, is developed under the framework of the full MPI open source platform PELICANS [3]. The new MPI capabilities of PeliGRIFF open new perspectives in the study of particulate flows and significantly increase the number of particles that can be considered in a full DNS approach: O(100000) in 2D and O(10000) in 3D. Results on the 2D/3D sedimentation/fluidization of isometric polygonal/polyedral particles with collisions are presented.
Abstract: The parametrical study of Shrouded Contra-rotating
Rotor was done in this paper based on 2D axisymmetric simulations.
The calculations were made with an actuator disk as double rotor
model. It objects to explore and quantify the effects of different shroud
geometry parameters mainly using the performance of power loading
(PL), which could evaluate the whole propulsion system capability as
5 Newtontotal thrust generationfor hover demand. The numerical
results show that:The increase of nozzle radius is desired but limited
by the flow separation, its optimal design is around 1.15 times rotor
radius, the viscosity effects greatly constraint the influence of nozzle
shape, the divergent angle around 10.5° performs best for chosen
nozzle length; The parameters of inlet such as leading edge curvature,
radius and internal shape do not affect thrust great but play an
important role in pressure distribution which could produce most part
of shroud thrust, they should be chosen according to the reduction of
adverse pressure gradients to reduce the risk of boundary separation.
Abstract: In this study, stress distributions on dental implants
made of functionally graded biomaterials (FGBM) are investigated
numerically. The implant body is considered to be subjected to axial
compression loads. Numerical problem is assumed to be 2D, and
ANSYS commercial software is used for the analysis. The cross
section of the implant thread varies as varying the height (H) and the
width (t) of the thread. According to thread dimensions of implant
and material properties of FGBM, equivalent stress distribution on
the implant is determined and presented with contour plots along
with the maximum equivalent stress values. As a result, with
increasing material gradient parameter (n), the equivalent stress
decreases, but the minimum stress distribution increases. Maximum
stress values decrease with decreasing implant radius (r). Maximum
von Mises stresses increases with decreasing H when t is constant.
On the other hand, the stress values are not affected by variation of t
in the case of H = constant.
Abstract: In this article, we aim to discuss the formulation of two explicit group iterative finite difference methods for time-dependent two dimensional Burger-s problem on a variable mesh. For the non-linear problems, the discretization leads to a non-linear system whose Jacobian is a tridiagonal matrix. We discuss the Newton-s explicit group iterative methods for a general Burger-s equation. The proposed explicit group methods are derived from the standard point and rotated point Crank-Nicolson finite difference schemes. Their computational complexity analysis is discussed. Numerical results are given to justify the feasibility of these two proposed iterative methods.

Abstract: In this research, heat transfer of a poly Ethylene
fluidized bed reactor without reaction were studied experimentally
and computationally at different superficial gas velocities. A multifluid
Eulerian computational model incorporating the kinetic theory
for solid particles was developed and used to simulate the heat
conducting gas–solid flows in a fluidized bed configuration.
Momentum exchange coefficients were evaluated using the Syamlal–
O-Brien drag functions. Temperature distributions of different phases
in the reactor were also computed. Good agreement was found
between the model predictions and the experimentally obtained data
for the bed expansion ratio as well as the qualitative gas–solid flow
patterns. The simulation and experimental results showed that the gas
temperature decreases as it moves upward in the reactor, while the
solid particle temperature increases. Pressure drop and temperature
distribution predicted by the simulations were in good agreement
with the experimental measurements at superficial gas velocities
higher than the minimum fluidization velocity. Also, the predicted
time-average local voidage profiles were in reasonable agreement
with the experimental results. The study showed that the
computational model was capable of predicting the heat transfer and
the hydrodynamic behavior of gas-solid fluidized bed flows with
reasonable accuracy.
Abstract: A new fuzzy filter is presented for noise reduction of
images corrupted with additive noise. The filter consists of two
stages. In the first stage, all the pixels of image are processed for
determining noisy pixels. For this, a fuzzy rule based system
associates a degree to each pixel. The degree of a pixel is a real
number in the range [0,1], which denotes a probability that the pixel
is not considered as a noisy pixel. In the second stage, another fuzzy
rule based system is employed. It uses the output of the previous
fuzzy system to perform fuzzy smoothing by weighting the
contributions of neighboring pixel values. Experimental results are
obtained to show the feasibility of the proposed filter. These results
are also compared to other filters by numerical measure and visual
inspection.
Abstract: An experimental and simulation flight test has been carried out to evaluate the longitudinal gliding characteristics of a lifting body with blunted half-cone geometry. The novelty here is the lifting body's pitch control mechanism, which consists of a pair of leading-edge rotating cylinders. Flight simulation uses aerodynamic data from computational fluid dynamics supported by wind-tunnel test. Flight test consists of releasing an aluminum lifting body model from a moving vehicle at the appropriate wind speed while measuring the lifting body's variation of altitude against time of flight. Results show that leading-edge rotating cylinder is able to give small amounts of improvement to the longitudinal stability and pitch control to the lifting body.
Abstract: In this paper a unified approach via block-pulse functions (BPFs) or shifted Legendre polynomials (SLPs) is presented to solve the linear-quadratic-Gaussian (LQG) control problem. Also a recursive algorithm is proposed to solve the above problem via BPFs. By using the elegant operational properties of orthogonal functions (BPFs or SLPs) these computationally attractive algorithms are developed. To demonstrate the validity of the proposed approaches a numerical example is included.
Abstract: Observations show that power plant efficiency
decreases in hot summer days. Water droplet injection in air
condensers is suggested in order to decrease the inlet air temperature.
Nozzle arrangement, injected water flow rate and droplets diameter
effects on evaporation rate and the resulting air temperature are
investigated using numerical simulation. Decreasing the diameter of
injected droplets and increasing the number of injecting nozzles,
decreases the outlet air temperature. Also a more uniform air
temperature can be obtained using more injecting nozzles. Numerical
results are in good agreement with analytical results.
Abstract: In this paper, a numerical solution based on nonpolynomial
cubic spline functions is used for finding the solution of
boundary value problems which arise from the problems of calculus
of variations. This approximation reduce the problems to an explicit
system of algebraic equations. Some numerical examples are also
given to illustrate the accuracy and applicability of the presented
method.
Abstract: This research paper presents numerical studies of the
characteristics of warhead fragmentation in terms of initial velocities,
spray angles of fragments and fragment mass distribution of high
explosive (HE) warhead. The behavior of warhead fragmentation
depends on shape and size of warhead, thickness of casing, type of
explosive, number and position of detonator, and etc. This paper
focuses on the effects of material properties of warhead casing, i.e.
failure strain, initial yield and ultimate strength on the characteristics
of warhead fragmentation. It was found that initial yield and ultimate
strength of casing has minimal effects on the initial velocities and
spray angles of fragments. Moreover, a brittle warhead casing with
low failure strain tends to produce higher number of fragments with
less average fragment mass.
Abstract: Numerical investigation of the characteristics of an 80°
delta wing in combined force-pitch and free-roll is presented. The
implicit, upwind, flux-difference splitting, finite volume scheme and
the second-order-accurate finite difference scheme are employed to
solve the flow governing equations and Euler rigid-body dynamics
equations, respectively. The characteristics of the delta wing in
combined free-roll and large amplitude force-pitch is obtained
numerically and shows a well agreement with experimental data
qualitatively. The motion in combined force-pitch and free-roll
significantly reduces the lift force and transverse stabilities of the delta
wing, which is closely related to the flying safety. Investigations on
sensitive factors indicate that the roll-axis moment of inertia and the
structural damping have great influence on the frequency and
amplitude, respectively. Moreover, the turbulence model is considered
as an influencing factor in the investigation.
Abstract: This paper deals with a portfolio selection problem
based on the possibility theory under the assumption that the returns
of assets are LR-type fuzzy numbers. A possibilistic portfolio model
with transaction costs is proposed, in which the possibilistic mean
value of the return is termed measure of investment return, and the
possibilistic variance of the return is termed measure of investment
risk. Due to considering transaction costs, the existing traditional
optimization algorithms usually fail to find the optimal solution
efficiently and heuristic algorithms can be the best method. Therefore,
a particle swarm optimization is designed to solve the corresponding
optimization problem. At last, a numerical example is given to
illustrate our proposed effective means and approaches.
Abstract: This paper presents a methodology to harvest the kinetic energy of the raindrops using piezoelectric devices. In the study 1m×1m PVDF (Polyvinylidene fluoride) piezoelectric membrane, which is fixed by the four edges, is considered for the numerical simulation on deformation of the membrane due to the impact of the raindrops. Then according to the drop size of the rain, the simulation is performed classifying the rainfall types into three categories as light stratiform rain, moderate stratiform rain and heavy thundershower. The impact force of the raindrop is dependent on the terminal velocity of the raindrop, which is a function of raindrop diameter. The results were then analyzed to calculate the harvestable energy from the deformation of the piezoelectric membrane.
Abstract: The aim of the current study is to develop a numerical
tool that is capable of achieving an optimum shape and design of
hyperbolic cooling towers based on coupling a non-linear finite
element model developed in-house and a genetic algorithm
optimization technique. The objective function is set to be the
minimum weight of the tower. The geometric modeling of the tower
is represented by means of B-spline curves. The finite element
method is applied to model the elastic buckling behaviour of a tower
subjected to wind pressure and dead load. The study is divided into
two main parts. The first part investigates the optimum shape of the
tower corresponding to minimum weight assuming constant
thickness. The study is extended in the second part by introducing the
shell thickness as one of the design variables in order to achieve an
optimum shape and design. Design, functionality and practicality
constraints are applied.
Abstract: In this study, control performance of a smart base
isolation system consisting of a friction pendulum system (FPS) and a
magnetorheological (MR) damper has been investigated. A fuzzy
logic controller (FLC) is used to modulate the MR damper so as to
minimize structural acceleration while maintaining acceptable base
displacement levels. To this end, a multi-objective optimization
scheme is used to optimize parameters of membership functions and
find appropriate fuzzy rules. To demonstrate effectiveness of the
proposed multi-objective genetic algorithm for FLC, a numerical
study of a smart base isolation system is conducted using several
historical earthquakes. It is shown that the proposed method can find
optimal fuzzy rules and that the optimized FLC outperforms not only a
passive control strategy but also a human-designed FLC and a
conventional semi-active control algorithm.
Abstract: The article deals with numerical investigation of axisymmetric
subsonic air to air ejector. An analysis of flow and mixing
processes in cylindrical mixing chamber are made. Several modes
with different velocity and ejection ratio are presented. The mixing
processes are described and differences between flow in the initial
region of mixing and the main region of mixing are described. The
lengths of both regions are evaluated. Transition point and point
where the mixing processes are finished are identified. It was found
that the length of the initial region of mixing is strongly dependent on
the velocity ratio, while the length of the main region of mixing is
dependent on velocity ratio only slightly.
