Abstract: The effect of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) on the
electrical properties of Poly(vinylidene fluoride-hexafluoropropylene)
(P(VdF-HFP)) based gel polymer electrolytes has been investigated
in the present work. The length and diameter ranges of CNFs used in
the present work are 5-50 μm and 200-600 nm respectively. The
nanocomposite gel polymer electrolytes have been synthesized by
solution casting technique with varying CNFs content in terms of
weight percentage. Electrochemical impedance analysis demonstrates
that the reinforcement of carbon nanofibers significantly enhances the
ionic conductivity of the polymer electrolyte. The decrease of
crystallinity of P(VdF-HFP) due the addition of CNFs has been
confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The interaction of CNFs with
various constituents of nanocomposite gel polymer electrolytes has
been assessed by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy.
Moreover CNFs added gel polymer electrolytes offer superior
thermal stability as compared to that of CNFs free electrolytes as
confirmed by Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA).
Abstract: A new approach has been developed to estimate the
load share and distribution of worm gear drives, and to calculate the
instantaneous tooth meshing stiffness. In the approach, the worm gear
drive was modelled as a series of spur gear slices, and each slice was
analyzed separately using the well-established formulae of spur gear
loading and stresses. By combining the results obtained for all slices,
the entire envolute worm gear set loading and stressing was obtained. The geometric modelling method presented allows tooth elastic
deformation and tooth root stresses of worm gear drives under
different load conditions to be investigated. Based on the slicing
method introduced in this study, the instantaneous meshing stiffness
and load share are obtained. In comparison with existing methods,
this approach has both good analysis accuracy and less computing
time.
Abstract: The system of ordinary nonlinear differential
equations describing sliding velocity during impact with friction for a
three-dimensional rigid-multibody system is developed. No analytical
solutions have been obtained before for this highly nonlinear system.
Hence, a power series solution is proposed. Since the validity of this
solution is limited to its convergence zone, a suitable time step is
chosen and at the end of it a new series solution is constructed. For a
case study, the trajectory of the sliding velocity using the proposed
method is built using 6 time steps, which coincides with a Runge-
Kutta solution using 38 time steps.
Abstract: One of the most important challenging factors in
medical images is nominated as noise. Image denoising refers to the
improvement of a digital medical image that has been infected by
Additive White Gaussian Noise (AWGN). The digital medical image
or video can be affected by different types of noises. They are
impulse noise, Poisson noise and AWGN. Computed tomography
(CT) images are subjects to low quality due to the noise. Quality of
CT images is dependent on absorbed dose to patients directly in such
a way that increase in absorbed radiation, consequently absorbed
dose to patients (ADP), enhances the CT images quality. In this
manner, noise reduction techniques on purpose of images quality
enhancement exposing no excess radiation to patients is one the
challenging problems for CT images processing. In this work, noise
reduction in CT images was performed using two different
directional 2 dimensional (2D) transformations; i.e., Curvelet and
Contourlet and Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) thresholding
methods of BayesShrink and AdaptShrink, compared to each other
and we proposed a new threshold in wavelet domain for not only
noise reduction but also edge retaining, consequently the proposed
method retains the modified coefficients significantly that result good
visual quality. Data evaluations were accomplished by using two
criterions; namely, peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) and Structure
similarity (Ssim).
Abstract: A sliding door system is used in commercial vehicles
and passenger cars to allow a larger unobstructed access to the
interior for loading and unloading. The movement of a sliding door
on vehicle body is ensured by mechanisms and tracks having special
cross-section which is manufactured by roll forming and stretch
bending process. There are three tracks and three mechanisms which
are called upper, central and lower on a sliding door system. There
are static requirements as strength on different directions, rigidity for
mechanisms, door drop off, door sag; dynamic requirements as high
energy slam opening-closing and durability requirement to validate
these products. In addition, there is a kinematic requirement to find
out force values from door handle during manual operating. In this
study, finite element analysis and physical test results which are
realized for sliding door systems will be shared comparatively.
Abstract: This research will give the introductory ideas for
cultural adaption of B2C E-Service design in Germany. By the
intense competition of E-Service development, many companies have
realized the importance of understanding the emotional and cultural
characteristics of their customers. Ignoring customers’ needs and
requirements throughout the E-Service design can lead to faults,
mistakes, and gaps. The term of E-Service usability now is changed
not only to develop high quality E-Services, but also to be extended
to include customer satisfaction and provide for them to feel local.
Abstract: This paper discusses the general methods to saturation
in the steady-state, two axis (d & q) frame models of synchronous
machines. In particular, the important role of the magnetic coupling
between the d-q axes (cross-magnetizing phenomenon), is
demonstrated. For that purpose, distinct methods of saturation
modeling of dumper synchronous machine with cross-saturation are
identified, and detailed models synthesis in d-q axes. A number of
models are given in the final developed form. The procedure and the
novel models are verified by a critical application to prove the
validity of the method and the equivalence between all developed
models is reported. Advantages of some of the models over the
existing ones and their applicability are discussed.
Abstract: This paper addresses minimizing the makespan of the
distributed permutation flow shop scheduling problem. In this
problem, there are several parallel identical factories or flowshops
each with series of similar machines. Each job should be allocated to
one of the factories and all of the operations of the jobs should be
performed in the allocated factory. This problem has recently gained
attention and due to NP-Hard nature of the problem, metaheuristic
algorithms have been proposed to tackle it. Majority of the proposed
algorithms require large computational time which is the main
drawback. In this study, a general variable neighborhood search
algorithm (GVNS) is proposed where several time-saving schemes
have been incorporated into it. Also, the GVNS uses the sophisticated
method to change the shaking procedure or perturbation depending
on the progress of the incumbent solution to prevent stagnation of the
search. The performance of the proposed algorithm is compared to
the state-of-the-art algorithms based on standard benchmark
instances.
Abstract: Present study was aimed to develop a discharge
measuring device for irrigation and laboratory channels. Experiments
were conducted on sharp edged constricted flow meters having four
types of width constrictions namely 2:1, 1.5:1, 1:1 and 90o in the
direction of flow. These devices were made of MS sheets and
installed separately in a rectangular flume. All these four devices
were tested under free and submerged flow conditions. Eight
different discharges varying from 2 lit/sec to 30 lit/sec were passed
through each device. In total around 500 observations of upstream
and downstream depths were taken in the present work. For each
discharge, free submerged and critical submergence under different
flow conditions were noted and plotted. Once the upstream and
downstream depths of flow over any of the device are known, the
discharge can be easily calculated with the help of the curves
developed for free and submerged flow conditions. The device
having contraction 2:1 is the most efficient one as it allows maximum
critical submergence.
Abstract: In some applications, such as image recognition or
compression, segmentation refers to the process of partitioning a
digital image into multiple segments. Image segmentation is typically
used to locate objects and boundaries (lines, curves, etc.) in images.
Image segmentation is to classify or cluster an image into several
parts (regions) according to the feature of image, for example, the
pixel value or the frequency response. More precisely, image
segmentation is the process of assigning a label to every pixel in an
image such that pixels with the same label share certain visual
characteristics. The result of image segmentation is a set of segments
that collectively cover the entire image, or a set of contours extracted
from the image. Several image segmentation algorithms were
proposed to segment an image before recognition or compression. Up
to now, many image segmentation algorithms exist and be
extensively applied in science and daily life. According to their
segmentation method, we can approximately categorize them into
region-based segmentation, data clustering, and edge-base
segmentation. In this paper, we give a study of several popular image
segmentation algorithms that are available.
Abstract: This study was to explore and utilize the fresh rind of
mangosteen Index Colour 5 as an upcoming raw material for the
production of natural dyes. Rind from the fresh mangosteen Index
Colour 5 was utilized to extract the dyes. The established extracts
were experimented on silk fabrics via three types of mordanting and
dyeing procedures; pre-mordanting, simultaneous mordanting and
post-mordanting. As a result, the applications of the freeze-drying
methodology and mechanizable equipment have helped to produce
excellent range of natural colours. Silk fabric treated simultaneously
with mordanting and dyeing with extract dye Index Colour 5
produced a brilliant shade of the red colour and the colour from this
index is also discovered sensitive to light and washing during the
fastness tests. The preliminary evaluation and instrumentation
analysis allowed us to examine whether the application of different
mordanting and dyeing procedures with the same extract samples and
concentrations affected the colours and shades of the fabric samples.
Abstract: Regions with extreme climate conditions such as
Astana city require energy saving measures to increase energy
performance of buildings which are responsible for more than 40% of
total energy consumption. Identification of optimal building
geometry is one of key factors to be considered. Architectural form of
a building has impact on space heating and cooling energy use,
however the interrelationship between the geometry and resultant
energy use is not always readily apparent. This paper presents a
comparative case study of two prototypical buildings with compact
building shape to assess its impact on energy performance.
Abstract: Main purpose of this study is to identify the impact of
government expenditure on economic growth in Asian Countries.
Consequently, main objective is to analyze whether government
expenditure causes economic growth in Asian countries vice versa
and then scrutinizing long-run equilibrium relationship exists
between them. The study completely based on secondary data. The
methodology being quantitative that includes econometrical
techniques of cointegration, panel fixed effects model and granger
causality in the context of panel data of Asian countries; Singapore,
Malaysia, Thailand, South Korea, Japan, China, Sri Lanka, India and
Bhutan with 44 observations in each country, totaling to 396
observations from 1970 to 2013. The model used is the random
effects panel OLS model. As with the above methodology, the study
found the fascinating outcome. At first, empirical findings exhibit a
momentous positive impact of government expenditure on Gross
Domestic Production in Asian region. Secondly, government
expenditure and economic growth indicate a long-run relationship in
Asian countries. In conclusion, there is a unidirectional causality
from economic growth to government expenditure and government
expenditure to economic growth in Asian countries. Hence the study
is validated that it is in line with the Keynesian theory and Wagner’s
law as well. Consequently, it can be concluded that role of
government would play a vital role in economic growth of Asian
Countries. However; if government expenditure did not figure out
with the economy’s needs it might be considerably inspiration the
economy in a negative way so that society bears the costs.
Abstract: The aims of study were investigation on chemical
composition essential oil and the effect of extract of Coronilla varia
on antimicrobial and cytotoxicity activity. The essential oils of
Coronilla varia is obtained by hydrodistillation and analyzed by
(GC/MS) for determining their chemical composition and
identification of their components. Antibacterial activity of plant
extract was determined by disc diffusion method and anticancer
activity measured by MTT assay. The major components in essential
oil were Caryophyllene Oxide (60.19%), Alphacadinol (4.13%) and
Homoadantaneca Robexylic Acid (3.31%). The extracts from
Coronilla varia had interesting activity against Proteus mirabilis in
the concentration of 700 μg/disc and did not show any activity
against Staphylococus aureus, Bacillus subtillis, Klebsiella
pneumonia and Entrobacter cloacae. The positive control,
Ampicillin, Chloramphenicol and Cenphalothin had shown zone of
inhibition resistant all bacteria. The ethanol extract of Corohilla varia
inhibited on MCF7 cell lines. IC50 0.6(mg/ml) was the optimum
concentration of extract from Coronilla varia inhibition of cell line
growth. The MCF7 cancer cell line and Proteus mirabilis were more
sensitive to Coronilla varia ethanol extract.
Abstract: Water resource systems modeling has constantly been
a challenge through history for human beings. As the innovative
methodological development is evolving alongside computer sciences
on one hand, researches are likely to confront more complex and
larger water resources systems due to new challenges regarding
increased water demands, climate change and human interventions,
socio-economic concerns, and environment protection and
sustainability. In this research, an automatic calibration scheme has
been applied on the Gilan’s large-scale water resource model using
mathematical programming. The water resource model’s calibration
is developed in order to attune unknown water return flows from
demand sites in the complex Sefidroud irrigation network and other
related areas. The calibration procedure is validated by comparing
several gauged river outflows from the system in the past with model
results. The calibration results are pleasantly reasonable presenting a
rational insight of the system. Subsequently, the unknown optimized
parameters were used in a basin-scale linear optimization model with
the ability to evaluate the system’s performance against a reduced
inflow scenario in future. Results showed an acceptable match
between predicted and observed outflows from the system at selected
hydrometric stations. Moreover, an efficient operating policy was
determined for Sefidroud dam leading to a minimum water shortage
in the reduced inflow scenario.
Abstract: A multilayer passive shield composed of low-activity
lead (Pb), copper (Cu), tin (Sn) and iron (Fe) was designed and
manufactured for a coaxial HPGe detector placed at a surface
laboratory for reducing background radiation and radiation dose to
the personnel. The performance of the shield was evaluated and
efficiency curves of the detector were plotted by using of various
standard sources in different distances. Monte Carlo simulations and
a set of TLD chips were used for dose estimation in two distances of
20 and 40 cm. The results show that the shield reduced background
spectrum and the personnel dose more than 95%.
Abstract: It is an indispensible strategy to adopt greenery
approach on architectural bases so as to improve ecological habitats,
decrease heat-island effect, purify air quality, and relieve surface
runoff as well as noise pollution, all of which are done in an attempt to
achieve sustainable environment. How we can do with plant design to
attain the best visual quality and ideal carbon dioxide fixation depends
on whether or not we can appropriately make use of greenery
according to the nature of architectural bases. To achieve the goal, it is
a need that architects and landscape architects should be provided with
sufficient local references. Current greenery studies focus mainly on
the heat-island effect of urban with large scale. Most of the architects
still rely on people with years of expertise regarding the adoption and
disposition of plantation in connection with microclimate scale.
Therefore, environmental design, which integrates science and
aesthetics, requires fundamental research on landscape environment
technology divided from building environment technology. By doing
so, we can create mutual benefits between green building and the
environment. This issue is extremely important for the greening design
of the bases of green buildings in cities and various open spaces. The
purpose of this study is to establish plant selection and allocation
strategies under different building sunshade levels. Initially, with the
shading of sunshine on the greening bases as the starting point, the
effects of the shades produced by different building types on the
greening strategies were analyzed. Then, by measuring the PAR
(photosynthetic active radiation), the relative DLI (daily light integral)
was calculated, while the DLI Map was established in order to
evaluate the effects of the building shading on the established
environmental greening, thereby serving as a reference for plant
selection and allocation. The discussion results were to be applied in
the evaluation of environment greening of greening buildings and
establish the “right plant, right place” design strategy of multi-level
ecological greening for application in urban design and landscape
design development, as well as the greening criteria to feedback to the
eco-city greening buildings.
Abstract: The present paper attempts to investigate the
prediction of air entrainment rate and aeration efficiency of a free
overfall jets issuing from a triangular sharp crested weir by using
regression based modelling. The empirical equations, Support vector
machine (polynomial and radial basis function) models and the linear
regression techniques were applied on the triangular sharp crested
weirs relating the air entrainment rate and the aeration efficiency to
the input parameters namely drop height, discharge, and vertex angle.
It was observed that there exists a good agreement between the
measured values and the values obtained using empirical equations,
Support vector machine (Polynomial and rbf) models and the linear
regression techniques. The test results demonstrated that the SVM
based (Poly & rbf) model also provided acceptable prediction of the
measured values with reasonable accuracy along with empirical
equations and linear regression techniques in modelling the air
entrainment rate and the aeration efficiency of a free overfall jets
issuing from triangular sharp crested weir. Further sensitivity analysis
has also been performed to study the impact of input parameter on the
output in terms of air entrainment rate and aeration efficiency.
Abstract: Anammox is a novel and promising technology that has changed the traditional concept of biological nitrogen removal. The process facilitates direct oxidation of ammonical nitrogen under anaerobic conditions with nitrite as an electron acceptor without addition of external carbon sources. The present study investigated the feasibility of Anammox Hybrid Reactor (AHR) combining the dual advantages of suspended and attached growth media for biodegradation of ammonical nitrogen in wastewater. Experimental unit consisted of 4 nos. of 5L capacity AHR inoculated with mixed seed culture containing anoxic and activated sludge (1:1). The process was established by feeding the reactors with synthetic wastewater containing NH4-H and NO2-N in the ratio 1:1 at HRT (hydraulic retention time) of 1 day. The reactors were gradually acclimated to higher ammonium concentration till it attained pseudo steady state removal at a total nitrogen concentration of 1200 mg/l. During this period, the performance of the AHR was monitored at twelve different HRTs varying from 0.25-3.0 d with increasing NLR from 0.4 to 4.8 kg N/m3d. AHR demonstrated significantly higher nitrogen removal (95.1%) at optimal HRT of 1 day. Filter media in AHR contributed an additional 27.2% ammonium removal in addition to 72% reduction in the sludge washout rate. This may be attributed to the functional mechanism of filter media which acts as a mechanical sieve and reduces the sludge washout rate many folds. This enhances the biomass retention capacity of the reactor by 25%, which is the key parameter for successful operation of high rate bioreactors. The effluent nitrate concentration, which is one of the bottlenecks of anammox process was also minimised significantly (42.3-52.3 mg/L). Process kinetics was evaluated using first order and Grau-second order models. The first-order substrate removal rate constant was found as 13.0 d-1. Model validation revealed that Grau second order model was more precise and predicted effluent nitrogen concentration with least error (1.84±10%). A new mathematical model based on mass balance was developed to predict N2 gas in AHR. The mass balance model derived from total nitrogen dictated significantly higher correlation (R2=0.986) and predicted N2 gas with least error of precision (0.12±8.49%). SEM study of biomass indicated the presence of heterogeneous population of cocci and rod shaped bacteria of average diameter varying from 1.2-1.5 mm. Owing to enhanced NRE coupled with meagre production of effluent nitrate and its ability to retain high biomass, AHR proved to be the most competitive reactor configuration for dealing with nitrogen laden wastewater.
Abstract: Objective: Sharing devastating news with patients is
often considered the most difficult task of doctors. This study aimed
to explore patients’ perceptions of receiving bad news including
which features improve the experience and which areas need refining. Methods: A questionnaire was written based on the steps of the
SPIKES model for breaking bad new. 20 patients receiving treatment
for a hematological malignancy completed the questionnaire. Results: Overall, the results are promising as most patients praised
their consultation. ‘Poor’ was more commonly rated by women and
participants aged 45-64. The main differences between the ‘excellent’
and ‘poor’ consultations include the doctor’s sensitivity and checking
the patients’ understanding. Only 35% of patients were asked their
existing knowledge and 85% of consultations failed to discuss the
impact of the diagnosis on daily life. Conclusion: This study agreed with the consensus of existing
literature. The commended aspects include consultation set-up and
information given. Areas patients felt needed improvement include
doctors determining the patient’s existing knowledge and checking
new information has been understood. Doctors should also explore
how the diagnosis will affect the patient’s life. With a poorer
prognosis, doctors should work on conveying appropriate hope. The
study was limited by a small sample size and potential recall bias.
