Abstract: The main goal in this paper is to quantify the quality of
different techniques for radiation treatment plans, a back-propagation
artificial neural network (ANN) combined with biomedicine theory
was used to model thirteen dosimetric parameters and to calculate
two dosimetric indices. The correlations between dosimetric indices
and quality of life were extracted as the features and used in the ANN
model to make decisions in the clinic. The simulation results show
that a trained multilayer back-propagation neural network model can
help a doctor accept or reject a plan efficiently. In addition, the
models are flexible and whenever a new treatment technique enters
the market, the feature variables simply need to be imported and the
model re-trained for it to be ready for use.
Abstract: With the help of coincidence degree theory, sufficient
conditions for existence of periodic solutions for a food chain model
with functional responses on time scales are established.
Abstract: Air bubbles have been detected in human circulation
of end-stage renal disease patients who are treated by hemodialysis.
The consequence of air embolism, air bubbles, is under recognized
and usually overlooked in daily practice. This paper shows results of
a capacitor based detection method that capable of detecting the
presence of air bubbles in the blood stream in different frequencies.
The method is based on a parallel plates capacitor made of platinum
with an area of 1.5 cm2 and a distance between the two plates is 1cm.
The dielectric material used in this capacitor is Dextran70 solution
which mimics blood rheology. Simulations were carried out using
RC circuit at two frequencies 30Hz and 3 kHz and results compared
with experiments and theory. It is observed that by injecting air
bubbles of different diameters into the device, there were significant
changes in the capacitance of the capacitor. Furthermore, it is
observed that the output voltage from the circuit increased with
increasing air bubble diameter. These results demonstrate the
feasibility of this approach in improving air bubble detection in
Hemodialysis.
Abstract: The importance of hints in an intelligent tutoring system is well understood. The problems however related to their delivering are quite a few. In this paper we propose delivering of hints to be based on considering their usefulness. By this we mean that a hint is regarded as useful to a student if the student has succeeded to solve a problem after the hint was suggested to her/him. Methods from the theory of partial orderings are further applied facilitating an automated process of offering individualized advises on how to proceed in order to solve a particular problem.
Abstract: In many data mining applications, it is a priori known
that the target function should satisfy certain constraints imposed
by, for example, economic theory or a human-decision maker. In this
paper we consider partially monotone prediction problems, where the
target variable depends monotonically on some of the input variables
but not on all. We propose a novel method to construct prediction
models, where monotone dependences with respect to some of
the input variables are preserved by virtue of construction. Our
method belongs to the class of mixture models. The basic idea is to
convolute monotone neural networks with weight (kernel) functions
to make predictions. By using simulation and real case studies,
we demonstrate the application of our method. To obtain sound
assessment for the performance of our approach, we use standard
neural networks with weight decay and partially monotone linear
models as benchmark methods for comparison. The results show that
our approach outperforms partially monotone linear models in terms
of accuracy. Furthermore, the incorporation of partial monotonicity
constraints not only leads to models that are in accordance with the
decision maker's expertise, but also reduces considerably the model
variance in comparison to standard neural networks with weight
decay.
Abstract: This paper describes a study of geometrically
nonlinear free vibration of thin circular functionally graded (CFGP)
plates resting on Winkler elastic foundations. The material properties
of the functionally graded composites examined here are assumed to
be graded smoothly and continuously through the direction of the
plate thickness according to a power law and are estimated using the
rule of mixture. The theoretical model is based on the classical Plate
theory and the Von-Kármán geometrical nonlinearity assumptions.
An homogenization procedure (HP) is developed to reduce the
problem considered here to that of isotropic homogeneous circular
plates resting on Winkler foundation. Hamilton-s principle is applied
and a multimode approach is derived to calculate the fundamental
nonlinear frequency parameters which are found to be in a good
agreement with the published results. On the other hand, the
influence of the foundation parameters on the nonlinear fundamental
frequency has also been analysed.
Abstract: A theory for optimal filtering of infinite sets of random
signals is presented. There are several new distinctive features of the
proposed approach. First, a single optimal filter for processing any
signal from a given infinite signal set is provided. Second, the filter is
presented in the special form of a sum with p terms where each term
is represented as a combination of three operations. Each operation
is a special stage of the filtering aimed at facilitating the associated
numerical work. Third, an iterative scheme is implemented into the
filter structure to provide an improvement in the filter performance at
each step of the scheme. The final step of the scheme concerns signal
compression and decompression. This step is based on the solution of
a new rank-constrained matrix approximation problem. The solution
to the matrix problem is described in this paper. A rigorous error
analysis is given for the new filter.
Abstract: The people are differed by their capabilities, skills and mental agilities. The evolution of human from childhood when they are completely dependent up to adultness the time they gradually set the dependency free is too complicated, by considering they have all started from almost one point but some become cleverer and some less. The main control command of a cybernetic hand should be posted by remaining healthy organs of disabled Person. These commands can be from several channels, which their recording and detecting are different and need complicated study. In this research, we suppose that, this stage has been done or in the other words, the command has been already sent and detected. So the main goal is to control a long hand, upper elbow hand missing, by an interest angle define by disabled. It means that, the system input is the position desired by disables and the output is the elbow-joint angle variation. Therefore the goal is a suitable control design based on neural network theory in order to meet the given mapping.
Abstract: Film, as an art form playing a vital role and is a powerful tool in documenting, influencing and shaping the society. Films are the collective creation of a large number of separate individuals, each contributing with creative input, unique talents, and technical expertise to the project. Recently, the Malaysian Independent (or “Indie") filmmakers have made their presence felt by winning awards at various international film festivals. Working in the digital video (DV) format, a number of independent filmmakers really hit their stride with a range of remarkably strong titles and international recognition has been quick in coming and their works are now regularly in exhibition or in competition, winning many top prizes at prestigious festivals around the world. The interaction factors among crewmembers are emphasized as imperative for group success. An in-depth interview is conducted to analyze the social interactions and exchanges between filmmakers through Social Exchanges Theory (SET). Certainly the new millennium that was marked as the digital technology revolution has changed the face of filmmaking in Malaysia. There is a clear need to study the Malaysian independent cinema especially from the perspective of understanding what causes the independent filmmakers to work so well given all of the difficulties and constraints.
Abstract: Electron multiplying charge coupled devices (EMCCDs) have revolutionized the world of low light imaging by introducing on-chip multiplication gain based on the impact ionization effect in the silicon. They combine the sub-electron readout noise with high frame rates. Signal-to-noise Ratio (SNR) is an important performance parameter for low-light-level imaging systems. This work investigates the SNR performance of an EMCCD operated in Non-inverted Mode (NIMO) and Inverted Mode (IMO). The theory of noise characteristics and operation modes is presented. The results show that the SNR of is determined by dark current and clock induced charge at high gain level. The optimum SNR performance is provided by an EMCCD operated in NIMO in short exposure and strong cooling applications. In contrast, an IMO EMCCD is preferable.
Abstract: A stage-structured predator-prey system with two time delays is considered. By analyzing the corresponding characteristic equation, the local stability of a positive equilibrium is investigated and the existence of Hopf bifurcations is established. Formulae are derived to determine the direction of bifurcations and the stability of bifurcating periodic solutions by using the normal form theory and center manifold theorem. Numerical simulations are carried out to illustrate the theoretical results. Based on the global Hopf bifurcation theorem for general functional differential equations, the global existence of periodic solutions is established.
Abstract: Computer languages are usually lumped together
into broad -paradigms-, leaving us in want of a finer classification
of kinds of language. Theories distinguishing between -genuine
differences- in language has been called for, and we propose that
such differences can be observed through a notion of expressive mode.
We outline this concept, propose how it could be operationalized and
indicate a possible context for the development of a corresponding
theory. Finally we consider a possible application in connection
with evaluation of language revision. We illustrate this with a case,
investigating possible revisions of the relational algebra in order to
overcome weaknesses of the division operator in connection with
universal queries.
Abstract: With the enormous growth on the web, users get easily
lost in the rich hyper structure. Thus developing user friendly and
automated tools for providing relevant information without any
redundant links to the users to cater to their needs is the primary task
for the website owners. Most of the existing web mining algorithms
have concentrated on finding frequent patterns while neglecting the
less frequent one that are likely to contain the outlying data such as
noise, irrelevant and redundant data. This paper proposes new
algorithm for mining the web content by detecting the redundant
links from the web documents using set theoretical(classical
mathematics) such as subset, union, intersection etc,. Then the
redundant links is removed from the original web content to get the
required information by the user..
Abstract: This work presents the highly accurate numerical calculation
of the natural frequencies for functionally graded beams with
simply supported boundary conditions. The Timoshenko first order
shear deformation beam theory and the higher order shear deformation
beam theory of Reddy have been applied to the functionally
graded beams analysis. The material property gradient is assumed
to be in the thickness direction. The Hamilton-s principle is utilized
to obtain the dynamic equations of functionally graded beams. The
influences of the volume fraction index and thickness-to-length ratio
on the fundamental frequencies are discussed. Comparison of the
numerical results for the homogeneous beam with Euler-Bernoulli
beam theory results show that the derived model is satisfactory.
Abstract: One of the main concerns in the Information Technology field is adoption with new technologies in organizations which may result in increasing the usage paste of these technologies. This study aims to look at the issue of culture-s role in accepting and using new technologies in organizations. The study examines the effect of culture on accepting and intention to use new technology in organizations. Studies show culture is one of the most important barriers in adoption new technologies. The model used for accepting and using new technology is Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), while for culture and dimensions a well-known theory by Hofsted was used. Results of the study show significant effect of culture on intention to use new technologies. All four dimensions of culture were tested to find the strength of relationship with behavioral intention to use new technologies. Findings indicate the important role of culture in the level of intention to use new technologies and different role of each dimension to improve adaptation process. The study suggests that transferring of new technologies efforts are most likely to be successful if the parties are culturally aligned.
Abstract: In this paper, a delayed prototype model is studied. Regarding the delay as a bifurcation parameter, we prove that a sequence of Hopf bifurcations will occur at the positive equilibrium when the delay increases. Using the normal form method and center manifold theory, some explicit formulae are worked out for determining the stability and the direction of the bifurcated periodic solutions. Finally, Computer simulations are carried out to explain some mathematical conclusions.
Abstract: Probabilistic techniques in computer programs are becoming
more and more widely used. Therefore, there is a big
interest in the formal specification, verification, and development
of probabilistic programs. In our work-in-progress project, we are
attempting to make a constructive framework for developing probabilistic
programs formally. The main contribution of this paper
is to introduce an intermediate artifact of our work, a Z-based
formalism called PZ, by which one can build set theoretical models of
probabilistic programs. We propose to use a constructive set theory,
called CZ set theory, to interpret the specifications written in PZ.
Since CZ has an interpretation in Martin-L¨of-s theory of types, this
idea enables us to derive probabilistic programs from correctness
proofs of their PZ specifications.
Abstract: We discuss a theoretical conceptual framework to help
understand how the new business analytics technologies have
diffused in firms. We draw on three theoretical perspectives for this
purpose. They are innovation diffusion theory, IT Business Value
and the technology-organization-environment theory. We develop a
conceptual framework that helps understand the interlinkages among
factors affecting diffusion of business analytics and its impact on
performance.
Abstract: This work deals with the initial applications and formulation of an anisotropic plastic-damage constitutive model proposed for non-linear analysis of reinforced concrete structures submitted to a loading with change of the sign. The original constitutive model is based on the fundamental hypothesis of energy equivalence between real and continuous medium following the concepts of the Continuum Damage Mechanics. The concrete is assumed as an initial elastic isotropic medium presenting anisotropy, permanent strains and bimodularity (distinct elastic responses whether traction or compression stress states prevail) induced by damage evolution. In order to take into account the bimodularity, two damage tensors governing the rigidity in tension or compression regimes are introduced. Then, some conditions are introduced in the original version of the model in order to simulate the damage unilateral effect. The three-dimensional version of the proposed model is analyzed in order to validate its formulation when compared to micromechanical theory. The one-dimensional version of the model is applied in the analyses of a reinforced concrete beam submitted to a loading with change of the sign. Despite the parametric identification problems, the initial applications show the good performance of the model.
Abstract: Empirical force fields and density functional theory
(DFT) was used to study the binding energies and structures of
methylamine on the surface of activated carbons (ACs). This is a first
step in studying the adsorption of alkyl amines on the surface of
functionalized ACs. The force fields used were Dreiding (DFF),
Universal (UFF) and Compass (CFF) models. The generalized
gradient approximation with Perdew Wang 91 (PW91) functional
was used for DFT calculations. In addition to obtaining the aminecarboxylic
acid adsorption energies, the results were used to establish
reliability of the empirical models for these systems. CFF predicted a
binding energy of -9.227 (kcal/mol) which agreed with PW91 at -
13.17 (kcal/mol), compared to DFF 0 (kcal/mol) and UFF -0.72
(kcal/mol). However, the CFF binding energies for the amine to ester
and ketone disagreed with PW91 results. The structures obtained
from all models agreed with PW91 results.
