Abstract: Seemingly simple probabilities in the m-player game bingo have never been calculated. These probabilities include expected game length and the expected number of winners on a given turn. The difficulty in probabilistic analysis lies in the subtle interdependence among the m-many bingo game cards in play. In this paper, the game i got it!, a bingo variant, is considered. This variation provides enough weakening of the inter-player dependence to allow probabilistic analysis not possible for traditional bingo. The probability of winning in exactly k turns is calculated for a one-player game. Given a game of m-many players, the expected game length and tie probability are calculated. With these calculations, the game-s interesting payout scheme is considered.
Abstract: It is well recognized that the green house gases such
as Chlorofluoro Carbon (CFC), CH4, CO2 etc. are responsible
directly or indirectly for the increase in the average global temperature
of the Earth. The presence of CFC is responsible for
the depletion of ozone concentration in the atmosphere due to
which the heat accompanied with the sun rays are less absorbed
causing increase in the atmospheric temperature of the Earth. The
gases like CH4 and CO2 are also responsible for the increase in
the atmospheric temperature. The increase in the temperature level
directly or indirectly affects the dynamics of interacting species
systems. Therefore, in this paper a mathematical model is proposed
and analysed using stability theory to asses the effects of increasing
temperature due to greenhouse gases on the survival or extinction of
populations in a prey-predator system. A threshold value in terms
of a stress parameter is obtained which determines the extinction or
existence of populations in the underlying system.
Abstract: In this paper, we propose an approach of unsupervised
segmentation with fuzzy connectedness. Valid seeds are first specified
by an unsupervised method based on scale space theory. A region is
then extracted for each seed with a relative object extraction method of
fuzzy connectedness. Afterwards, regions are merged according to the
values between them of an introduced measure. Some theorems and
propositions are also provided to show the reasonableness of the
measure for doing mergence. Experiment results on a synthetic image,
a color image and a large amount of MR images of our method are
reported.
Abstract: Educational institutions often implement policies with
the intention of influencing how learning and teaching occur.
Generally, such policies are not as effective as their makers would
like; changing the behavior of third-level teachers proves difficult.
Nevertheless, a policy instituted in 2006 at the Dublin Institute of
Technology has met with success: each newly hired faculty member
must have a post-graduate qualification in “Learning and Teaching"
or successfully complete one within the first two years of
employment. The intention is to build teachers- knowledge about
student-centered pedagogies and their capacity to implement them.
As a result of this policy (and associated programs that support it),
positive outcomes are readily apparent. Individual teachers who have
completed the programs have implemented significant change at the
course and program levels. This paper introduces the policy,
identifies outcomes in relation to existing theory, describes research
underway, and pinpoints areas where organizational learning has
occurred.
Abstract: Equilibrium and stability equations of a thin rectangular plate with length a, width b, and thickness h(x)=C1x+C2, made of functionally graded materials under thermal loads are derived based on the first order shear deformation theory. It is assumed that the material properties vary as a power form of thickness coordinate variable z. The derived equilibrium and buckling equations are then solved analytically for a plate with simply supported boundary conditions. One type of thermal loading, uniform temperature rise and gradient through the thickness are considered, and the buckling temperatures are derived. The influences of the plate aspect ratio, the relative thickness, the gradient index and the transverse shear on buckling temperature difference are all discussed.
Abstract: Primary studies are being carried out in Turkey for
expanding information and communication technologies (ICT) aided instruction activities. Subject of the present study is to identify
whether those studies achieved their goals in the application. Information technologies (IT) formative teachers in the primary
schools, and academicians in the faculties of education were interviewed to investigate the process and results of implementing
computer-aided instruction methods whose basis is strengthened in theory. Analysis of the results gained from two separate surveys
demonstrated that capability of the teachers in elementary education institutions for carrying into effect computer-aided instruction and
technical infrastructure has not been established for computer-aided instruction practices yet. Prospective teachers must be well-equipped in ICT to duly fulfill requirements of modern education and also
must be self-confident. Finally, scope and intensity of the courses given in connection with teaching of the ICT in faculties of education needs to be revised.
Abstract: The belief decision tree (BDT) approach is a decision
tree in an uncertain environment where the uncertainty is represented
through the Transferable Belief Model (TBM), one interpretation
of the belief function theory. The uncertainty can appear either in
the actual class of training objects or attribute values of objects to
classify. In this paper, we develop a post-pruning method of belief
decision trees in order to reduce size and improve classification
accuracy on unseen cases. The pruning of decision tree has a
considerable intention in the areas of machine learning.
Abstract: A neurofuzzy approach for a given set of input-output training data is proposed in two phases. Firstly, the data set is partitioned automatically into a set of clusters. Then a fuzzy if-then rule is extracted from each cluster to form a fuzzy rule base. Secondly, a fuzzy neural network is constructed accordingly and parameters are tuned to increase the precision of the fuzzy rule base. This network is able to learn and optimize the rule base of a Sugeno like Fuzzy inference system using Hybrid learning algorithm, which combines gradient descent, and least mean square algorithm. This proposed neurofuzzy system has the advantage of determining the number of rules automatically and also reduce the number of rules, decrease computational time, learns faster and consumes less memory. The authors also investigate that how neurofuzzy techniques can be applied in the area of control theory to design a fuzzy controller for linear and nonlinear dynamic systems modelling from a set of input/output data. The simulation analysis on a wide range of processes, to identify nonlinear components on-linely in a control system and a benchmark problem involving the prediction of a chaotic time series is carried out. Furthermore, the well-known examples of linear and nonlinear systems are also simulated under the Matlab/Simulink environment. The above combination is also illustrated in modeling the relationship between automobile trips and demographic factors.
Abstract: The objective of this work is to show a procedure for
mesh generation in a fluidized bed using large eddy simulations
(LES) of a filtered two-fluid model. The experimental data were
obtained by [1] in a laboratory fluidized bed. Results show that it is
possible to use mesh with less cells as compared to RANS turbulence
model with granular kinetic theory flow (KTGF). Also, the numerical
results validate the experimental data near wall of the bed, which
cannot be predicted by RANS.model.
Abstract: Stability of functionally graded beams with piezoelectric layers subjected to axial compressive load that is simply supported at both ends is studied in this paper. The displacement field of beam is assumed based on first order shear deformation beam theory. Applying the Hamilton's principle, the governing equation is established. The influences of applied voltage, dimensionless geometrical parameter, functionally graded index and piezoelectric thickness on the critical buckling load of beam are presented. To investigate the accuracy of the present analysis, a compression study is carried out with a known data.
Abstract: Information theory and Statistics play an important role in Biological Sciences when we use information measures for the study of diversity and equitability. In this communication, we develop the link among the three disciplines and prove that sampling distributions can be used to develop new information measures. Our study will be an interdisciplinary and will find its applications in Biological systems.
Abstract: This paper present a new method for design of power
system stabilizer (PSS) based on sliding mode control (SMC)
technique. The control objective is to enhance stability and improve
the dynamic response of the multi-machine power system. In order to
test effectiveness of the proposed scheme, simulation will be carried
out to analyze the small signal stability characteristics of the system
about the steady state operating condition following the change in
reference mechanical torque and also parameters uncertainties. For
comparison, simulation of a conventional control PSS (lead-lag
compensation type) will be carried out. The main approach is
focusing on the control performance which later proven to have the
degree of shorter reaching time and lower spike.
Abstract: This paper is devoted to a delayed periodic predatorprey system with non-monotonic numerical response on time scales. With the help of a continuation theorem based on coincidence degree theory, we establish easily verifiable criteria for the existence of multiple periodic solutions. As corollaries, some applications are listed. In particular, our results improve and generalize some known ones.
Abstract: In this paper, by constructing a special set and utilizing fixed point theory in coin, we study the existence of solution of singular two point’s boundary value problem for second-order differential equation, which improved and generalize the result of related paper.
Abstract: It is not a secret that, IT management has become
more and more and integrated part of almost all organizations. IT
managers posses an enormous amount of knowledge within both
organizational knowledge and general IT knowledge. This article
investigates how IT managers keep themselves updated on IT
knowledge in general and looks into how much time IT managers
spend on weekly basis searching the net for new or problem solving
IT knowledge. The theory used in this paper is used to investigate the
current role of IT managers and what issues they are facing.
Furthermore a research is conducted where 7 IT managers in medium
sized and large Danish companies are interviewed to add further
focus on the role of the IT manager and to focus on how they keep
themselves updated. Beside finding substantial need for more
research, IT managers – generalists or specialists – only have limited
knowledge resources at hand in updating their own knowledge –
leaving much initiative to vendors.
Abstract: Real options theory suggests that managerial flexibility embedded within irreversible investments can account for a significant value in project valuation. Although the argument has become the dominant focus of capital investment theory over decades, yet recent survey literature in capital budgeting indicates that corporate practitioners still do not explicitly apply real options in investment decisions. In this paper, we explore how real options decision criteria can be transformed into equivalent capital budgeting criteria under the consideration of uncertainty, assuming that underlying stochastic process follows a geometric Brownian motion (GBM), a mixed diffusion-jump (MX), or a mean-reverting process (MR). These equivalent valuation techniques can be readily decomposed into conventional investment rules and “option impacts", the latter of which describe the impacts on optimal investment rules with the option value considered. Based on numerical analysis and Monte Carlo simulation, three major findings are derived. First, it is shown that real options could be successfully integrated into the mindset of conventional capital budgeting. Second, the inclusion of option impacts tends to delay investment. It is indicated that the delay effect is the most significant under a GBM process and the least significant under a MR process. Third, it is optimal to adopt the new capital budgeting criteria in investment decision-making and adopting a suboptimal investment rule without considering real options could lead to a substantial loss in value.
Abstract: This paper presents an exploration into the structure of the corporate governance network and interlocking directorates in the Czech Republic. First a literature overview and a basic terminology of the network theory is presented. Further in the text, statistics and other calculations relevant to corporate governance networks are presented. For this purpose an empirical data set consisting of 2 906 joint stock companies in the Czech Republic was examined. Industries with the highest average number of interlocks per company were healthcare, and energy and utilities. There is no observable link between the financial performance of the company and the number of its interlocks. Also interlocks with financial companies are very rare.
Abstract: Educational games (EG) seem to have lots of potential due to digital games popularity and preferences of our younger generations of learners. However, most studies focus on game design and its effectiveness while little has been known about the factors that can affect users to accept or to reject EG for their learning. User acceptance research try to understand the determinants of information systems (IS) adoption among users by investigating both systems factors and users factors. Upon the lack of knowledge on acceptance factors for educational games, we seek to understand the issue. This study proposed a model of acceptance factors based on Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT). We use original model (performance expectancy, effort expectancy and social influence) together with two new determinants (learning opportunities and enjoyment). We will also investigate the effect of gender and gaming experience that moderate the proposed factors.
Abstract: Analysis for the generalized thermoelastic Lamb
waves, which propagates in anisotropic thin plates in generalized
thermoelasticity, is presented employing normal mode expansion
method. The displacement and temperature fields are expressed by a
summation of the symmetric and antisymmetric thermoelastic modes
in the surface thermal stresses and thermal gradient free orthotropic
plate, therefore the theory is particularly appropriate for waveform
analyses of Lamb waves in thin anisotropic plates. The transient
waveforms excited by the thermoelastic expansion are analyzed for
an orthotropic thin plate. The obtained results show that the theory
provides a quantitative analysis to characterize anisotropic
thermoelastic stiffness properties of plates by wave detection. Finally
numerical calculations have been presented for a NaF crystal, and the
dispersion curves for the lowest modes of the symmetric and
antisymmetric vibrations are represented graphically at different
values of thermal relaxation time. However, the methods can be used
for other materials as well
