Abstract: Approximate tandem repeats in a genomic sequence are
two or more contiguous, similar copies of a pattern of nucleotides.
They are used in DNA mapping, studying molecular evolution
mechanisms, forensic analysis and research in diagnosis of inherited
diseases. All their functions are still investigated and not well
defined, but increasing biological databases together with tools for
identification of these repeats may lead to discovery of their specific
role or correlation with particular features. This paper presents a new
approach for finding approximate tandem repeats in a given sequence,
where the similarity between consecutive repeats is measured using
the Hamming distance. It is an enhancement of a method for finding
exact tandem repeats in DNA sequences based on the Burrows-
Wheeler transform.
Abstract: This paper reports on investigations into capacity of a
Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) wireless communication
system employing a uniform linear array (ULA) at the transmitter and
either a uniform linear array (ULA) or a uniform circular array (UCA)
antenna at the receiver. The transmitter is assumed to be surrounded by
scattering objects while the receiver is postulated to be free from
scattering objects. The Laplacian distribution of angle of arrival
(AOA) of a signal reaching the receiver is postulated. Calculations of
the MIMO system capacity are performed for two cases without and
with the channel estimation errors. For estimating the MIMO channel,
the scaled least square (SLS) and minimum mean square error
(MMSE) methods are considered.
Abstract: In this paper, a fuzzy controller is designed for
stabilization of the Lorenz chaotic equations. A simple Mamdani
inference method is used for this purpose. This method is very simple
and applicable for complex chaotic systems and it can be
implemented easily. The stability of close loop system is investigated
by the Lyapunov stabilization criterion. A Lyapunov function is
introduced and the global stability is proven. Finally, the
effectiveness of this method is illustrated by simulation results and it
is shown that the performance of the system is improved.

Abstract: Computed tomography (CT) dosimetry normally uses
an ionization chamber 100 mm long to estimate the computed
tomography dose index (CTDI), however some reports have already
indicated that small devices could replace the long ion chamber to
improve quality assurance procedures in CT dosimetry. This paper
presents a novel dosimetry system based in a commercial
phototransistor evaluated for CT dosimetry. Three detector
configurations were developed for this system: with a single, two and
four devices. Dose profile measurements were obtained with them
and their angular response were evaluated. The results showed that
the novel dosimetry system with the phototransistor could be an
alternative for CT dosimetry. It allows to obtain the CT dose profile
in details and also to estimate the CTDI in longer length than the
100 mm pencil chamber. The angular response showed that the one
device detector configuration is the most adequate among the three
configurations analyzed in this study.
Abstract: It has been always observed that the effectiveness of
MIS as a support tool for management decisions degenerate after
time of implementation, despite the substantial investments being
made. This is true for organizations at the initial stages of MIS
implementations, manual or computerized. A survey of a sample of
middle to top managers in business and government institutions was
made. A large ratio indicates that the MIS has lost its impact on the
day-to-day operations, and even the response lag time expands
sometimes indefinitely. The data indicates an infant mortality
phenomenon of the bathtub model. Reasons may be monotonous
nature of MIS delivery, irrelevance, irreverence, timeliness, and lack
of adequate detail. All those reasons collaborate to create a degree of
degeneracy. We investigate and model as a bathtub model the
phenomenon of MIS degeneracy that inflicts the MIS systems and
renders it ineffective. A degeneracy index is developed to identify
the status of the MIS system and possible remedies to prevent the
onset of total collapse of the system to the point of being useless.
Abstract: The goal of this work is to describe a new algorithm for finding the optimal variable order, number of nodes for any order and other ROBDD parameters, based on a tabular method. The tabular method makes use of a pre-built backend database table that stores the ROBDD size for selected combinations of min-terms. The user uses the backend table and the proposed algorithm to find the necessary ROBDD parameters, such as best variable order, number of nodes etc. Experimental results on benchmarks are given for this technique.
Abstract: The controllable electrical loss which consists of the
copper loss and iron loss can be minimized by the optimal control of
the armature current vector. The control algorithm of current vector
minimizing the electrical loss is proposed and the optimal current
vector can be decided according to the operating speed and the load
conditions. The proposed control algorithm is applied to the
experimental PM motor drive system and this paper presents a
modern approach of speed control for permanent magnet
synchronous motor (PMSM) applied for Electric Vehicle using a
nonlinear control. The regulation algorithms are based on the
feedback linearization technique. The direct component of the current
is controlled to be zero which insures the maximum torque operation.
The near unity power factor operation is also achieved. More over,
among EV-s motor electric propulsion features, the energy efficiency
is a basic characteristic that is influenced by vehicle dynamics and
system architecture. For this reason, the EV dynamics are taken into
account.
Abstract: This paper presents the findings of two experiments that were performed on the Redundancy in Wireless Connection Model (RiWC) using the 802.11b standard. The experiments were simulated using OPNET 11.5 Modeler software. The first was aimed at finding the maximum number of simultaneous Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) users the model would support under the G.711 and G.729 codec standards when the packetization interval was 10 milliseconds (ms). The second experiment examined the model?s VoIP user capacity using the G.729 codec standard along with background traffic using the same packetization interval as in the first experiment. To determine the capacity of the model under various experiments, we checked three metrics: jitter, delay and data loss. When background traffic was added, we checked the response time in addition to the previous three metrics. The findings of the first experiment indicated that the maximum number of simultaneous VoIP users the model was able to support was 5, which is consistent with recent research findings. When using the G.729 codec, the model was able to support up to 16 VoIP users; similar experiments in current literature have indicated a maximum of 7 users. The finding of the second experiment demonstrated that the maximum number of VoIP users the model was able to support was 12, with the existence of background traffic.
Abstract: In this paper, a new robust audio fingerprinting
algorithm in MP3 compressed domain is proposed with high
robustness to time scale modification (TSM). Instead of simply
employing short-term information of the MP3 stream, the new
algorithm extracts the long-term features in MP3 compressed domain
by using the modulation frequency analysis. Our experiment has
demonstrated that the proposed method can achieve a hit rate of
above 95% in audio retrieval and resist the attack of 20% TSM. It has
lower bit error rate (BER) performance compared to the other
algorithms. The proposed algorithm can also be used in other
compressed domains, such as AAC.
Abstract: This study used positivist quantitative approach to examine the mathematical concepts acquisition of- KS4 (14-16) Special Education Needs (SENs) students within the school sector education in England. The research is based on a pilot study and the design is completely holistic in its approach with mixing methodologies. The study combines the qualitative and quantitative methods of approach in gathering formative data for the design process. Although, the approach could best be described as a mix method, fundamentally with a strong positivist paradigm, hence my earlier understanding of the differentiation of the students, student – teacher body and the various elements of indicators that is being measured which will require an attenuated description of individual research subjects. The design process involves four phases with five key stages which are; literature review and document analysis, the survey, interview, and observation; then finally the analysis of data set. The research identified the need for triangulation with Reid-s phases of data management providing scaffold for the study. The study clearly identified the ideological and philosophical aspects of educational research design for the study of mathematics by the special education needs (SENs) students in England using the virtual learning environment (VLE) platform.
Abstract: In this paper we develop and analyze the model for
the spread of Leptospirosis by age group in Thailand, between 1997
and 2010 by using mathematical modeling and computer simulation.
Leptospirosis is caused by pathogenic spirochetes of the genus
Leptospira. It is a zoonotic disease of global importance and an
emerging health problem in Thailand. In Thailand, leptospirosis is a
reportable disease, the top three age groups are 23.31% in 35-44
years olds group, 22.76% in 25-34 year olds group, 17.60% in 45-54
year olds group from reported leptospirosis between 1997 and 2010,
with a peak in 35-44 year olds group. Our paper, the Leptosipirosis
transmission by age group in Thailand is studied on the mathematical
model. Some analytical and simulation results are presented.
Abstract: Traditional object segmentation methods are time consuming and computationally difficult. In this paper, onedimensional object detection along the secant lines is applied. Statistical features of texture images are computed for the recognition process. Example matrices of these features and formulae for calculation of similarities between two feature patterns are expressed. And experiments are also carried out using these features.
Abstract: This paper presents the characterization and design of a capacitive pressure sensor with LC-based 0.35 µm CMOS readout circuit. SPICE is employed to evaluate the characteristics of the readout circuit and COMSOL multiphysics structural analysis is used to simulate the behavior of the pressure sensor. The readout circuit converts the capacitance variation of the pressure sensor into the frequency output. Simulation results show that the proposed pressure sensor has output frequency from 2.50 to 2.28 GHz in a pressure range from 0.1 to 2 MPa almost linearly. The sensitivity of the frequency shift with respect to the applied pressure load is 0.11 GHz/MPa.
Abstract: The paper deals with the comparison study of
harmonic detection methods for a shunt active power filter. The
%THD and the power factor value at the PCC point after
compensation are considered for the comparison. There are three
harmonic detection methods used in the paper that are synchronous
reference frame method, synchronous detection method, and DQ axis
with Fourier method. In addition, the ideal current source is used to
represent the active power filter by assuming an infinitely fast
controller action of the active power filter. The simulation results
show that the DQ axis with Fourier method provides the minimum
%THD after compensation compared with other methods. However,
the power factor value at the PCC point after compensation is slightly
lower than that of synchronous detection method.
Abstract: The objective of this paper is to design a model of human vital sign prediction for decreasing prediction error by using two states mapping based time series neural network BP (back-propagation) model. Normally, lot of industries has been applying the neural network model by training them in a supervised manner with the error back-propagation algorithm for time series prediction systems. However, it still has a residual error between real value and prediction output. Therefore, we designed two states of neural network model for compensation of residual error which is possible to use in the prevention of sudden death and metabolic syndrome disease such as hypertension disease and obesity. We found that most of simulations cases were satisfied by the two states mapping based time series prediction model compared to normal BP. In particular, small sample size of times series were more accurate than the standard MLP model. We expect that this algorithm can be available to sudden death prevention and monitoring AGENT system in a ubiquitous homecare environment.
Abstract: Contemporary science and technologies largely widen
the gap between the spiritual and rational of the society. Industrial
and technological breakthroughs might radically affect most
processes in the society, thus losing the cultural heritage. The
thinkers recognized the dangers of the decadence in the first place. In
the present article the ways of preserving cultural heritage have been
investigated. Memory has always been a necessary condition for selfidentification,
- continuity is based on this. The authors have
supported the hypothesis that continuity and ethnic memory are the
very mechanisms that preserve cultural heritage. Such problemformulating
will facilitate another, new look at the material, spiritual
and arts spheres of the cultural heritage of numerous ethnic groups.
The fundamental works by major European and Kazakh scientists
have been taken as a basis for the research done.
Abstract: Thermal water hammer is a special type of water
hammer which rarely occurs in heat exchangers. In biphasic fluids, if
steam bubbles are surrounded by condensate, regarding lower
condensate temperature than steam, they will suddenly collapse. As a
result, the vacuum caused by an extreme change in volume lead to
movement of the condensates in all directions and their collision the
force produced by this collision leads to a severe stress in the pipe
wall. This phenomenon is a special type of water hammer. According
to fluid mechanics, this phenomenon is a particular type of transient
flows during which abrupt change of fluid leads to sudden pressure
change inside the tube. In this paper, the mechanism of abrupt failure
of 80 tubes of 481 tubes of a methanol heat exchanger is discussed.
Initially, due to excessive temperature differences between heat
transfer fluids and simultaneous failure of 80 tubes, thermal shock
was presupposed as the reason of failure. Deeper investigation on
cross-section of failed tubes showed that failure was, ductile type of
failure, so the first hypothesis was rejected. Further analysis and more
accurate experiments revealed that failure of tubes caused by thermal
water hammer. Finally, the causes of thermal water hammer and
various solutions to avoid such mechanism are discussed.
Abstract: In this paper, we propose a novel adaptive
spatiotemporal filter that utilizes image sequences in order to remove
noise. The consecutive frames include: current, previous and next
noisy frames. The filter proposed in this paper is based upon the
weighted averaging pixels intensity and noise variance in image
sequences. It utilizes the Appropriate Number of Consecutive Frames
(ANCF) based on the noisy pixels intensity among the frames. The
number of consecutive frames is adaptively calculated for each
region in image and its value may change from one region to another
region depending on the pixels intensity within the region. The
weights are determined by a well-defined mathematical criterion,
which is adaptive to the feature of spatiotemporal pixels of the
consecutive frames. It is experimentally shown that the proposed
filter can preserve image structures and edges under motion while
suppressing noise, and thus can be effectively used in image
sequences filtering. In addition, the AWA filter using ANCF is
particularly well suited for filtering sequences that contain segments
with abruptly changing scene content due to, for example, rapid
zooming and changes in the view of the camera.
Abstract: Rural areas of Tanzania are still disadvantaged in terms of diffusion of IP-based services; this is due to lack of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructures, especially lack of connectivity. One of the limitations for connectivity problems in rural areas of Tanzania is the high cost to establish infrastructures for IP-based services [1-2]. However the cost of connectivity varies from one technology to the other and at the same time, the cost is also different from one operator (service provider) to another within the country. This paper presents development of software system to calculate cost of connectivity to rural areas of Tanzania. The system is developed to make an easy access of connectivity cost from different technologies and different operators. The development of the calculator follows the V-model software development lifecycle. The calculator is used to evaluate the economic viability of different technologies considered as being potential candidates to provide rural connectivity. In this paper, the evaluation is based on the techno-economic analysis approach.
