Abstract: Data mining has been used very frequently to extract
hidden information from large databases. This paper suggests the use
of decision trees for continuously extracting the clinical reasoning in
the form of medical expert-s actions that is inherent in large number
of EMRs (Electronic Medical records). In this way the extracted data
could be used to teach students of oral medicine a number of orderly
processes for dealing with patients who represent with different
problems within the practice context over time.
Abstract: This work proposes an approach to address automatic
text summarization. This approach is a trainable summarizer, which
takes into account several features, including sentence position,
positive keyword, negative keyword, sentence centrality, sentence
resemblance to the title, sentence inclusion of name entity, sentence
inclusion of numerical data, sentence relative length, Bushy path of
the sentence and aggregated similarity for each sentence to generate
summaries. First we investigate the effect of each sentence feature on
the summarization task. Then we use all features score function to
train genetic algorithm (GA) and mathematical regression (MR)
models to obtain a suitable combination of feature weights. The
proposed approach performance is measured at several compression
rates on a data corpus composed of 100 English religious articles.
The results of the proposed approach are promising.
Abstract: The objective of this paper is to review and assess the
methodological issues and problems in marketing research, data and
knowledge mining in Turkey. As a summary, academic marketing
research publications in Turkey have significant problems. The most
vital problem seems to be related with modeling. Most of the
publications had major weaknesses in modeling. There were also,
serious problems regarding measurement and scaling, sampling and
analyses. Analyses myopia seems to be the most important problem
for young academia in Turkey. Another very important finding is the
lack of publications on data and knowledge mining in the academic
world.
Abstract: In the paper an effective context based lossless coding
technique is presented. Three principal and few auxiliary contexts are
defined. The predictor adaptation technique is an improved CoBALP
algorithm, denoted CoBALP+. Cumulated predictor error combining
8 bias estimators is calculated. It is shown experimentally that
indeed, the new technique is time-effective while it outperforms the
well known methods having reasonable time complexity, and is
inferior only to extremely computationally complex ones.
Abstract: A new approach is adopted in this paper based
on Turk and Pentland-s eigenface method. It was found that the
probability density function of the distance between the projection
vector of the input face image and the average projection vector of
the subject in the face database, follows Rayleigh distribution. In
order to decrease the false acceptance rate and increase the
recognition rate, the input face image has been recognized using two
thresholds including the acceptance threshold and the rejection
threshold. We also find out that the value of two thresholds will be
close to each other as number of trials increases. During the training,
in order to reduce the number of trials, the projection vectors for each
subject has been averaged. The recognition experiments using the
proposed algorithm show that the recognition rate achieves to
92.875% whilst the average number of judgment is only 2.56 times.
Abstract: To study the effect of suitable methods for
propagation of True Potato Seed (TPS) progenies, transplant and
selection of the best progenies, a factorial experiment base on a
randomized complete block design was carried out in the research
field of Sahneh region, Kermanshah, Iran during 2009-2010. Five
selective progenies from CIP (International Potato Center) including
CIP.994013, CIP.994002, CIP.994014, CIP.888006, and
CIP.994001 and two transplant preparation methods (Paper pot
preparation for mechanical cultivation and preparation in transplant
trays for manual cultivation) were studied in three replications.
Results showed that different progenies had no significant effect on
plant height (cm) and tuber yield (t ha-1), whereas had a significant
effect on number of tubers per unit area (m2). There was significant
difference between transplant preparation methods for plant height
and tuber yield. The interaction effect of progenies and transplant
preparation method was not significant for these traits. CIP.888006
progeny and paper pot preparation method produced the highest
tuber yields. Also CIP.994002 and CIP.994014 progenies considered
as the best progenies under paper pot preparation method due to high
yields.
Abstract: Text document categorization involves large amount
of data or features. The high dimensionality of features is a
troublesome and can affect the performance of the classification.
Therefore, feature selection is strongly considered as one of the
crucial part in text document categorization. Selecting the best
features to represent documents can reduce the dimensionality of
feature space hence increase the performance. There were many
approaches has been implemented by various researchers to
overcome this problem. This paper proposed a novel hybrid approach
for feature selection in text document categorization based on Ant
Colony Optimization (ACO) and Information Gain (IG). We also
presented state-of-the-art algorithms by several other researchers.
Abstract: The exact gain shape profile of erbium doped fiber
amplifiers (EDFA`s) are depends on fiber length and Er3 ion
densities. This paper optimized several of erbium doped fiber
parameters to obtain high performance characteristic at pump
wavelengths of λp= 980 nm and λs= 1550 nm for three different
pump powers. The maximum gain obtained for pump powers (10, 30
and 50mw) is nearly (19, 30 and 33 dB) at optimizations. The
required numerical aperture NA to obtain maximum gain becomes
less when pump power increased. The amplifier gain is increase
when Er+3doped near the center of the fiber core. The simulation has
been done by using optisystem 5.0 software (CAD for Photonics, a
license product of a Canadian based company) at 2.5 Gbps.
Abstract: In this paper, we propose a Connect6 solver which
adopts a hybrid approach based on a tree-search algorithm and image
processing techniques. The solver must deal with the complicated
computation and provide high performance in order to make real-time
decisions. The proposed approach enables the solver to be
implemented on a single Spartan-6 XC6SLX45 FPGA produced by
XILINX without using any external devices. The compact
implementation is achieved through image processing techniques to
optimize a tree-search algorithm of the Connect6 game. The tree
search is widely used in computer games and the optimal search brings
the best move in every turn of a computer game. Thus, many
tree-search algorithms such as Minimax algorithm and artificial
intelligence approaches have been widely proposed in this field.
However, there is one fundamental problem in this area; the
computation time increases rapidly in response to the growth of the
game tree. It means the larger the game tree is, the bigger the circuit
size is because of their highly parallel computation characteristics.
Here, this paper aims to reduce the size of a Connect6 game tree using
image processing techniques and its position symmetric property. The
proposed solver is composed of four computational modules: a
two-dimensional checkmate strategy checker, a template matching
module, a skilful-line predictor, and a next-move selector. These
modules work well together in selecting next moves from some
candidates and the total amount of their circuits is small. The details of
the hardware design for an FPGA implementation are described and
the performance of this design is also shown in this paper.
Abstract: Traditional Javanese classic dance is a valuable
inheritance in Java Indonesia. Nowadays, this treasure of culture is
no longer belonging to Javanese people only. Many art departments
from universities around the world already put this as a subject in
their curriculum. Nonetheless, dance is a practical skill. It needs to be
practices so often while accompanied by an instructor to get the right
technique. An interactive Computer Aided Instruction (iCAI) that can
interactively assist the student to practice is developed. By using this
software students can conduct a self practice in studio and get some
feedbacks from the software. This CAI is not intended to replace the
instructor, but to assist them in increasing the student fly-time in
practice.
Abstract: The purpose of the article is to illustrate the main
characteristics of the corporate governance challenge facing the
countries of South-Eastern Europe (SEE) and to subsequently
determine and assess the extensiveness and effectiveness of corporate
governance regulations in these countries. Therefore, we start with an
overview on the subject of the key problems of corporate governance
in transition. We then address the issue of corporate governance
measurement for SEE countries. To this end, we include a review of
the methodological framework for determining both the
extensiveness and the effectiveness of corporate governance
legislation. We then focus on the actual analysis of the quality of
corporate governance codes, as well as of legal institutions
effectiveness and provide a measure of corporate governance in
Romania and other SEE emerging markets. The paper concludes by
emphasizing the corporate governance enforcement gap and by
identifying research issues that require further study.
Abstract: All-to-all personalized communication, also known as complete exchange, is one of the most dense communication patterns in parallel computing. In this paper, we propose new indirect algorithms for complete exchange on all-port ring and torus. The new algorithms fully utilize all communication links and transmit messages along shortest paths to completely achieve the theoretical lower bounds on message transmission, which have not be achieved among other existing indirect algorithms. For 2D r × c ( r % c ) all-port torus, the algorithm has time complexities of optimal transmission cost and O(c) message startup cost. In addition, the proposed algorithms accommodate non-power-of-two tori where the number of nodes in each dimension needs not be power-of-two or square. Finally, the algorithms are conceptually simple and symmetrical for every message and every node so that they can be easily implemented and achieve the optimum in practice.
Abstract: In this paper a functional interpretation of quantum
theory (QT) with emphasis on quantum field theory (QFT) is proposed.
Besides the usual statements on relations between a functions
initial state and final state, a functional interpretation also contains
a description of the dynamic evolution of the function. That is, it
describes how things function. The proposed functional interpretation
of QT/QFT has been developed in the context of the author-s work
towards a computer model of QT with the goal of supporting
the largest possible scope of QT concepts. In the course of this
work, the author encountered a number of problems inherent in the
translation of quantum physics into a computer program. He came
to the conclusion that the goal of supporting the major QT concepts
can only be satisfied, if the present model of QT is supplemented
by a "functional interpretation" of QT/QFT. The paper describes a
proposal for that
Abstract: Rounding of coefficients is a common practice in
hardware implementation of digital filters. Where some coefficients
are very close to zero or one, as assumed in this paper, this rounding
action also leads to some computation reduction. Furthermore, if the
discarded coefficient is of high order, a reduced order filter is
obtained, otherwise the order does not change but computation is
reduced. In this paper, the Least Squares approximation to rounded
(or discarded) coefficient FIR filter is investigated. The result also
succinctly extended to general type of FIR filters.
Abstract: Adsorption of CS2 vapors has been studied on
different types of activated carbons obtained from different source
raw materials. The activated carbons have different surface areas and
are associated with varying amounts of the carbon-oxygen surface
groups. The adsorption of CS2 vapors is not directly related to surface
area, but is considerably influenced by the presence of carbonoxygen
surface groups. The adsorption decreases on increasing the
amount of carbon-oxygen surface groups on oxidation and increases
when these surface groups are eliminated on degassing. The
adsorption is maximum in case of the 950°-degassed carbon sample
which is almost completely free of any associated oxygen. The
kinetic data as analysed by Empirical diffusion model and Linear
driving force mass transfer model indicate that the adsorption does
not involve Fickian diffusion but may be considered as a pseudo first
order mass transfer process. The activation energy of adsorption and
isosteric enthalpies of adsorption indicate that the adsorption does not
involve interaction between CS2 and carbon-oxygen surface groups,
but hydrophobic interactions between CS2 and C-C atoms in the
carbon lattice.
Abstract: A dynamic of Bertrand duopoly game is analyzed, where players use different production methods and choose their prices with bounded rationality. The equilibriums of the corresponding discrete dynamical systems are investigated. The stability conditions of Nash equilibrium under a local adjustment process are studied. The stability conditions of Nash equilibrium under a local adjustment process are studied. The stability of Nash equilibrium, as some parameters of the model are varied, gives rise to complex dynamics such as cycles of higher order and chaos. On this basis, we discover that an increase of adjustment speed of bounded rational player can make Bertrand market sink into the chaotic state. Finally, the complex dynamics, bifurcations and chaos are displayed by numerical simulation.
Abstract: Postgraduate education is generally aimed at providing in-depth knowledge and understanding that include general philosophy in the world sciences, management, technologies, applications and other elements closely related to specific areas. In most universities, besides core and non-core subjects, a thesis is one of the requirements for the postgraduate student to accomplish before graduating. This paper reports on the empirical investigation into attributes that are associated with the obstacles to thesis accomplishment among postgraduate students. Using the quantitative approach the experiences of postgraduate students were tapped. Findings clearly revealed that information seeking, writing skills and other factors which refer to supervisor and time management, in particular, are recognized as contributory factors which positively or negatively influence postgraduates’ thesis accomplishment. Among these, writing skills dimensions were found to be the most difficult process in thesis accomplishment compared to information seeking and other factors. This pessimistic indication has provided some implications not only for the students but supervisors and institutions as a whole.
Abstract: Consider a mass production of HDD arms where
hundreds of CNC machines are used to manufacturer the HDD arms.
According to an overwhelming number of machines and models of
arm, construction of separate control chart for monitoring each HDD
arm model by each machine is not feasible. This research proposed a
strategy to optimize the SPC management on shop floor. The
procedure started from identifying the clusters of the machine with
similar manufacturing performance using clustering technique. The
three way control chart ( I - MR - R ) is then applied to each
clustered group of machine. This proposed research has
advantageous to the manufacturer in terms of not only better
performance of the SPC but also the quality management paradigm.
Abstract: An experimental study is presented on the effect
of microstructural change on the Portevin-Le Chatelier effect
behaviour of Al-2.5%Mg alloy. Tensile tests are performed on
the as received and heat treated (at 400 ºC for 16 hours)
samples for a wide range of strain rates. The serrations
observed in the stress-time curve are investigated from
statistical analysis point of view. Microstructures of the
samples are characterized by optical metallography and X-ray
diffraction. It is found that the excess vacancy generated due
to heat treatment leads to decrease in the strain rate sensitivity
and the increase in the number of stress drop occurrences per
unit time during the PLC effect. The microstructural
parameters like domain size, dislocation density have no
appreciable effect on the PLC effect as far as the statistical
behavior of the serrations is considered.
Abstract: A triangular fin with variable fin base thickness is analyzed and optimized using a two-dimensional analytical method. The influence of fin base height and fin base thickness on the temperature in the fin is listed. For the fixed fin volumes, the maximum heat loss, the corresponding optimum fin effectiveness, fin base height and fin tip length as a function of the fin base thickness, convection characteristic number and dimensionless fin volume are represented. One of the results shows that the optimum heat loss increases whereas the corresponding optimum fin effectiveness decreases with the increase of fin volume.
