Abstract: The aim of this paper is to use an experiential view of wine tourism to develop a battery of items that can potentially capture the overall Douro Valley experience from the tourist’s perspective. The Douro Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage region located in Portugal, was the target of this study. The research took a mixed approach using both qualitative and quantitative designs. Firstly, we combine the literature review on service quality scales with a content analysis of five in-depth interviews with winery managers and a focus group with wine tourists to identify the main dimensions of the overall tourism experience and to develop a battery of items for each dimension. Eight dimensions of the overall wine tourism experience came out, as follows: winery service and staff, winery facilities, winery service, wine product, wine region environment, wine region accessibilities, wine region´s offerings, and the wine region and winery reputation.
Abstract: This paper suggests a design methodology for the hardware and software of the electronic control unit (ECU) of safety-critical vehicle applications such as braking and steering. The architecture of the hardware is a high integrity system such thatit incorporates a high performance 32-bit CPU and a separate peripheral controlprocessor (PCP) together with an external watchdog CPU. Communication between the main CPU and the PCP is executed via a common area of RAM and events on either processor which are invoked by interrupts. Safety-related software is also implemented to provide a reliable, self-testing computing environment for safety critical and high integrity applications. The validity of the design approach is shown by using the hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HILS)for electric power steering(EPS) systemswhich consists of the EPS mechanism, the designed ECU, and monitoring tools.
Abstract: The production of aluminum alloys and ingots –
starting from the processing of alumina to aluminum, and the final
cast product – was studied using a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA)
approach. The studied aluminum supply chain consisted of a carbon
plant, a reduction plant, a casting plant, and a power plant. In the
LCA model, the environmental loads of the different plants for the
production of 1 ton of aluminum metal were investigated. The impact
of the aluminum production was assessed in eight impact categories.
The results showed that for all of the impact categories the power
plant had the highest impact only in the cases of Human Toxicity
Potential (HTP) the reduction plant had the highest impact and in the
Marine Aquatic Eco-Toxicity Potential (MAETP) the carbon plant
had the highest impact. Furthermore, the impact of the carbon plant
and the reduction plant combined was almost the same as the impact
of the power plant in the case of the Acidification Potential (AP). The
carbon plant had a positive impact on the environment when it come
to the Eutrophication Potential (EP) due to the production of clean
water in the process. The natural gas based power plant used in the
case study had 8.4 times less negative impact on the environment
when compared to the heavy fuel based power plant and 10.7 times
less negative impact when compared to the hard coal based power
plant.
Abstract: IFRN – Mossoró is a Brazilian technical education institute that develops several activities to encourage entrepreneurship, such as a curricular discipline about enterprise management and the existence of a business incubator. Despite efforts, the business incubator does not produce the expected effects. Therefore, what predisposes students to start their own business? If literature review explores determinant factors like the family and personal characteristics, it can be sustained that entrepreneurship skills can be taught since primary level, until university level. This paper presents the results of research project “Empreende IFRN” to understand the entrepreneurial predisposition and intention of the students from technical level courses. Data from 365 students from technical level courses reveal an increased entrepreneurial intention of students during time (from a 2 years period to someday in the future). The entrepreneurial behavior of parents affects students’ perception about starting their own business. Students also present a cautions behavior, preferring bank deposit and investment fund instead starting a business.
Abstract: Television news has gained a new dimension in terms
of ideological approaches as a result of such factors as globalization,
cross monopolization, presence of international companies etc. and
certain strategies have been developed at the production, presentation
and distribution stages of news. In this study, television news about a
process called “settlement process” was investigated. In this
framework, news about the settlement process on TV channels of
TRT 1, ATV, FOX TV, NTV, HABERTÜRK, TRT HABER and
STV was investigated using the content analysis method in terms of
the strategies the ideology construction, attitude towards the party in
power, attitude towards parties in opposition and attitude towards
BDP (Peace and Democracy Part) and Imrali (the island where
Abdullah Ocalan, head of PKK, is kept). First, the aforementioned
TV channels were selected randomly from 3 groups in order to be
able to reveal the representational capacity of commercial, news and
public channels.
The study covers 557 news items broadcast in the main news
bulletins between the dates of 15 March 2013 and 15 March 2013.
While there was a positive attitude towards the government in a
sizable portion of the news about the settlement process (63.6%), the
attitude of 25.3% of the news was impartial towards the government
and 11.3% had a negative attitude. On the other hand, there was a
negative attitude towards the Opposition in a considerable portion of
the news about the settlement process (56.1%). The attitude of 35.9%
of the news towards the Opposition was impartial whereas 8.0% had
a positive attitude. While 34.9% of the news about the settlement
process used the legitimization strategy from among the ideology
construction strategies, 22.8% used the unification strategy, 15.7%
the reification strategy, 15.6% fractional and 11%
concealment/mystification strategy.
Abstract: Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) have gained increasing
interest in recent times. This is greatly due to their special features,
which include unusual optical and electronic properties, high stability
and biological compatibility, controllable morphology and size
dispersion, and easy surface functionalization. In typical synthesis,
AuNPs were produced by reduction of gold salt AuCl4 in an
appropriate solvent. A stabilizing agent was added to prevent the
particles from aggregating. The antibacterial activity of different
sizes of gold nanoparticles was investigated against Staphylococcus
aureus, Salmonella typhi and Pseudomonas pneumonia using the disk
diffusion method in a Müeller–Hinton Agar. The Au-NPs were
effective against all bacteria tested. That the Au-NPs were
successfully synthesized in suspension and were used to study the
antibacterial activity of the two medicinal plants against some
bacterial pathogens suggests that Au-NPs can be employed as an
effective bacteria inhibitor and may be an effective tool in medical
field. The study clearly showed that the Au-NPs exhibiting inhibition
towards the tested pathogenic bacteria in vitro could have the same
effects in vivo and thus may be useful in the medical field if well
researched into.
Abstract: A cross-sectional survey to ascertain the capacity of laboratory persons in using ICTs was conducted in 15 Ugandan districts (July-August 2013). SPSS statistics 17.0 and SAS 9.2 software were used for entry and analyses. 69.35% of participants find it difficult to access a computer at work. Of the 30.65% who find it easy to access a computer at work, a significant 21.05% spend 0 hours on a computer daily. 60% of the participants cannot access internet at work. Of the 40% who have internet at work, a significant 20% lack email address but 20% weekly read emails weekly and 48% daily. It is viable/feasible to pilot informatics projects as strategies to build bridges develop skills for e-health landscape in laboratory services with a bigger financial muscle.
Abstract: Organic solvents find various applications in many industrial sectors and laboratories as dilution solvents, dispersion solvents, cleaners and even lubricants. Millions of tons of spent organic solvents (SOS) are generated each year worldwide, prompting the need for more efficient, cleaner and safer methods for the treatment and resource recovery of SOS. As a result, acetone, selected as a model compound for SOS, was gasified in supercritical water to assess the feasibility of resource recovery of SOS by means of supercritical water processes. Experiments were conducted with an autoclave reactor. Gaseous product is mainly consists of H2, CO, CO2 and CH4. The effects of three major operating parameters, the reaction temperature, from 673 to 773K, the dosage of oxidizing agent, from 0.3 to 0.5 stoichiometric oxygen, and the concentration of acetone in the feed, 0.1 and 0.2M, on the product gas composition, yield and heating value were evaluated with the water density fixed at about 0.188g/ml.
Abstract: The effects of thidiazuron (TDZ) and benzyladenine (BA) on protocorm-like bodies (PLBs) induction from leaf explants was investigated. It was found that TDZ was superior to BA. The highest percentage and number of PLBs per leaf explant at 30 and 5.3, respectively were obtained on ½ MS medium supplemented with 9µM TDZ. The regenerated plantlets were potted and acclimatized in the greenhouse. These plants grew well and developed into normal plants after 3 month of transplantation. The 100% survival of plantlets was achieved when planted on pots containing sphagnum moss.

Abstract: Celebrities are admired, appreciated and imitated all over the world. As a natural result of this, today many brands choose to work with celebrities for their advertisements. It can be said that the more the brands include celebrities in their marketing communication strategies, the tougher the competition in this field becomes and they allocate a large portion of their marketing budget to this. Brands invest in celebrities who will represent them in order to build the image they want to create.
This study aimed to bring under spotlight the perceptions of Turkish customers regarding the use of celebrities in advertisements and marketing communication and try to understand their possible effects on subsequent purchasing decisions. In addition, consumers’ reactions and perceptions were investigated in the context of the product-celebrity match, to what extent the celebrity conforms to the concept of the advertisement and the celebrity-target audience match.
In order to achieve this purpose, a quantitative research was conducted as a case study concerning Mavi Jeans (textile company). Information was obtained through survey. The results from this case study are supported by relevant theories concerning the main subject. The most valuable result would be that instead of creating an advertisement around a celebrity in demand at the time, using a celebrity that fits the concept of the advertisement and feeds the concept rather than replaces it, that is celebrity endorsement, will lead to more striking and positive results.
Abstract: Numerical methods like binomial and trinomial trees and finite difference methods can be used to price a wide range of options contracts for which there are no known analytical solutions. American options are the most famous of that kind of options. Besides numerical methods, American options can be valued with the approximation formulas, like Bjerksund-Stensland formulas from 1993 and 2002. When the value of American option is approximated by Bjerksund-Stensland formulas, the computer time spent to carry out that calculation is very short. The computer time spent using numerical methods can vary from less than one second to several minutes or even hours. However to be able to conduct a comparative analysis of numerical methods and Bjerksund-Stensland formulas, we will limit computer calculation time of numerical method to less than one second. Therefore, we ask the question: Which method will be most accurate at nearly the same computer calculation time?
Abstract: In Singapore, there are about 1 million baby boomers, defined as those born between 1947 and 1964. They constitute a sizeable proportion (about 30 per cent) of the resident population comprising Singapore citizens and permanent residents. The first batches of these baby boomers have already 65 years old by 2012. Thereafter, baby boomers will swell the ranks of the elderly population in Singapore until 2030. The baby boomers in this study are divided into broad groups, namely, the early baby boomers (born 1947-54) and late baby boomers (1955-64). Continuing decline in fertility and mortality rates in the past three decades as well as improvements in health care facilities and services have changed the demography of Singapore from a “pyramid-shape” young, post war baby boomers population to a rapidly ageing population. With the ageing of the baby boom generation, the population of Singapore is about to grey rapidly over the next three decades. As such, there is a need for Singapore to understand the profile, perceptions and aspirations of this group, and devise strategies to address the needs and concerns as well as opportunities that arise with the ageing of baby boomers are discussed and presented in this work.
Abstract: Palm kernel shell is an important bioenergy resource
in Thailand. However, due to elevated alkali content in biomass ash,
this oil palm residue shows high tendency to bed agglomeration in a
fluidized-bed combustion system using conventional bed material
(silica sand). In this study, palm kernel shell was burned in the
conical fluidized-bed combustor (FBC) using alumina and dolomite
as alternative bed materials to prevent bed agglomeration. For each
bed material, the combustion tests were performed at 45kg/h fuel feed
rate with excess air within 20–80%. Experimental results revealed
rather weak effects of the bed material type but substantial influence
of excess air on the behavior of temperature, O2, CO, CxHy, and NO
inside the reactor, as well as on the combustion efficiency and major
gaseous emissions of the conical FBC. The optimal level of excess air
ensuring high combustion efficiency (about 98.5%) and acceptable
level of the emissions was found to be about 40% when using
alumina and 60% with dolomite. By using these alternative bed
materials, bed agglomeration can be prevented when burning the
shell in the proposed conical FBC. However, both bed materials
exhibited significant changes in their morphological, physical and
chemical properties in the course of the time.
Abstract: This paper is an overview on public policy analysis focused on the study of Brazilian public policy making process. The methodology is based on the review of some theories on the subject, linking them to Brazilian reality. The study presents basic policy analysis concepts, such as policy, polity and politics. It is emphasized John Kingdon's Multiple Stream Model, because of its clarifying aspects concerning public policies formulation process in democratic countries. In this path it was possible to establish interpretations on environmental public policies in Brazil and understand its methods, instead of presenting only a case study. At the end, it is possible to connect theory with Brazilian reality, identifying negative and positive points of its political processes and structure.
Abstract: ICAM-2 (intercellular adhesion molecule 2) or CD102 (Cluster of Differentiation 102) is type I transmembrane glycoproteins, composing 2-9 immunoglobulin-like C2-type domains. ICAM-2 plays the particular role in immune response and cell surveillance. It is concerned in innate and specific immunity, cell survival signal, apoptosis, and anticancer. EST clone of ICAM-2, from P. gigas blood cell EST libraries, showed high identity to human ICAM-2 (92%) with conserve region of ICAM N-terminal domain and part of Ig superfamily. Gene and protein of ICAM-2 has been founded in mammals. This is the first report of ICAM-2 in fish
Abstract: Beginning with the debate of concept, this essay explains the historical source and development of flexible housing in China. In the former part, the flexibility contained in traditional house is explored. While in the latter, the relevant practices in modern times are systematically analyzed as three phases–the Embryonic Period (1949 - 1980), the Systematic Practice (1981 - 2000), as well as the Integrated Trend and Prosperity (2001 - present). As a conclusion, the generalized flexibility is tentatively discussed.
Abstract: This research aimed to study the beliefs in auspicious materials of entrepreneurs in Muang Hat Yai. The data were collected via documentary research and field work including interviews, observations shops in Hat Yai which used auspicious materials to bring lucks to the shops. The results were as follows. The beliefs in auspicious materials that the entrepreneurs had were of three areas: 1) The auspicious materials could correct the improperness of the shop location, for example, the shop situated opposite a branch road, a shrine, or a bank. The owner usually corrected it by putting Chinese auspicious materials in front of or in the shop, for example, a lion holding a sword in his mouth, or a mirror, etc. 2) The auspicious materials could bring in more income. The owner of the shop usually put the auspicious materials such as a cat beckoning and a bamboo fish trap believed to trap money in front of or inside the shop. 3) The auspicious materials like turtles, paired fish and a monster holding the moon in his mouth could solve life problems including health, family, and safety problems. The use of these auspicious materials showed the blending of the beliefs of the Chinese shop entrepreneurs with the Thai folk beliefs. What is interesting is that Hat Yai is located near the three southern border provinces which are the unrest area and this may cause the number of tourists to decline. This prompted them to build a mechanism in adjusting themselves both to save their lives and to increase the number of customers. Auspicious materials can make them feel more confident.
Abstract: In the era of rapidly increasing notebook market, consumer electronics manufacturers are facing a highly dynamic and competitive environment. In particular, the product appearance is the first part for user to distinguish the product from the product of other brands. Notebook product should differ in its appearance to engage users and contribute to the user experience (UX). The UX evaluates various product concepts to find the design for user needs; in addition, help the designer to further understand the product appearance preference of different market segment. However, few studies have been done for exploring the relationship between consumer background and the reaction of product appearance. This study aims to propose a data mining framework to capture the user’s information and the important relation between product appearance factors. The proposed framework consists of problem definition and structuring, data preparation, rules generation, and results evaluation and interpretation. An empirical study has been done in Taiwan that recruited 168 subjects from different background to experience the appearance performance of 11 different portable computers. The results assist the designers to develop product strategies based on the characteristics of consumers and the product concept that related to the UX, which help to launch the products to the right customers and increase the market shares. The results have shown the practical feasibility of the proposed framework.
Abstract: Nowadays the use of Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV) is increasing dramatically. The HEV is mainly dependent on electricity and there is always a need for storage of charge. Fuel Cell (FC), Batteries and Ultra Capacitor are being used for the proposed HEV as an electric power source or as an energy storage unit. The aim of developing an energy management technique is to utilize the sources according to the requirement of the vehicle with help of controller. This increases the efficiency of hybrid electric vehicle to reduce the fuel consumption and unwanted emission. The Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) in FC is done using (Perturb & Observe) algorithm. In this paper, the control of automobiles at variable speed is achieved effectively.
