Abstract: Simulation of the flow and sedimentation process in
the reservoir dams can be made by two methods of physical and mathematical modeling. The study area was within a region which
ranged from the Jelogir hydrometric station to the Karkheh reservoir
dam aimed at investigating the effects of stream tubes on the
GSTARS-3 model behavior. The methodologies was to run the model based on 5 stream tubes in order to observe the influence of
each scenario on longitudinal profiles, cross-section, flow velocity and bed load sediment size. Results further suggest that the use of
two stream tubes or more which result in the semi-two-dimensional
model will yield relatively closer results to the observational data
than a singular stream tube modeling. Moreover, the results of
modeling with three stream tubes shown to yield a relatively close
results with the observational data. The overall conclusion of the paper is with applying various stream tubes; it would be possible to yield a significant influence on the modeling behavior Vis-a Vis the bed load sediment size.
Abstract: The modeling of sound radiation is of fundamental importance for understanding the propagation of acoustic waves and, consequently, develop mechanisms for reducing acoustic noise. The propagation of acoustic waves, are involved in various phenomena such as radiation, absorption, transmission and reflection. The radiation is studied through the linear equation of the acoustic wave that is obtained through the equation for the Conservation of Momentum, equation of State and Continuity. From these equations, is the Helmholtz differential equation that describes the problem of acoustic radiation. In this paper we obtained the solution of the Helmholtz differential equation for an infinite cylinder in a pulsating through free and homogeneous. The analytical solution is implemented and the results are compared with the literature. A numerical formulation for this problem is obtained using the Boundary Element Method (BEM). This method has great power for solving certain acoustical problems in open field, compared to differential methods. BEM reduces the size of the problem, thereby simplifying the input data to be worked and reducing the computational time used.
Abstract: Six Sigma is a well known discipline that reduces
variation using complex statistical tools and the DMAIC model. By
integrating Goldratts-s Theory of Constraints, the Five Focusing
Points and System Thinking tools, Six Sigma projects can be selected
where it can cause more impact in the company. This research
defines an integrated model of six sigma and constraint management
that shows a step-by-step guide using the original methodologies
from each discipline and is evaluated in a case study from the
production line of a Automobile engine monoblock V8, resulting in
an increase in the line capacity from 18.7 pieces per hour to 22.4
pieces per hour, a reduction of 60% of Work-In-Process and a
variation decrease of 0.73%.
Abstract: One of the purposes of the robust method of
estimation is to reduce the influence of outliers in the data, on the
estimates. The outliers arise from gross errors or contamination from
distributions with long tails. The trimmed mean is a robust estimate.
This means that it is not sensitive to violation of distributional
assumptions of the data. It is called an adaptive estimate when the
trimming proportion is determined from the data rather than being
fixed a “priori-.
The main objective of this study is to find out the robustness
properties of the adaptive trimmed means in terms of efficiency, high
breakdown point and influence function. Specifically, it seeks to find
out the magnitude of the trimming proportion of the adaptive
trimmed mean which will yield efficient and robust estimates of the
parameter for data which follow a modified Weibull distribution with
parameter λ = 1/2 , where the trimming proportion is determined by a
ratio of two trimmed means defined as the tail length. Secondly, the
asymptotic properties of the tail length and the trimmed means are
also investigated. Finally, a comparison is made on the efficiency of
the adaptive trimmed means in terms of the standard deviation for the
trimming proportions and when these were fixed a “priori".
The asymptotic tail lengths defined as the ratio of two trimmed
means and the asymptotic variances were computed by using the
formulas derived. While the values of the standard deviations for the
derived tail lengths for data of size 40 simulated from a Weibull
distribution were computed for 100 iterations using a computer
program written in Pascal language.
The findings of the study revealed that the tail lengths of the
Weibull distribution increase in magnitudes as the trimming
proportions increase, the measure of the tail length and the adaptive
trimmed mean are asymptotically independent as the number of
observations n becomes very large or approaching infinity, the tail
length is asymptotically distributed as the ratio of two independent
normal random variables, and the asymptotic variances decrease as
the trimming proportions increase. The simulation study revealed
empirically that the standard error of the adaptive trimmed mean
using the ratio of tail lengths is relatively smaller for different values
of trimming proportions than its counterpart when the trimming
proportions were fixed a 'priori'.
Abstract: Reliability assessment and risk analysis of rotating
machine rotors in various overload and malfunction situations
present challenge to engineers and operators. In this paper a new
analytical method for evaluation of rotor under large deformation is
addressed. Model is presented in general form to include also
composite rotors. Presented simulation procedure is based on
variational work method and has capability to account for geometric
nonlinearity, large displacement, nonlinear support effect and rotor
contacting other machine components. New shape functions are
presented which capable to predict accurate nonlinear profile of
rotor. The closed form solutions for various operating and
malfunction situations are expressed. Analytical simulation results
are discussed
Abstract: CloudSim is a useful tool to simulate the cloud
environment. It shows the service availability, the power consumption,
and the network traffic of services on the cloud environment.
Moreover, it supports to calculate a network communication delay
through a network topology data easily. CloudSim allows inputting a
file of topology data, but it does not provide any generating process.
Thus, it needs the file of topology data generated from some other
tools. The BRITE is typical network topology generator. Also, it
supports various type of topology generating algorithms. If CloudSim
can include the BRITE, network simulation for clouds is easier than
existing version. This paper shows the potential of connection between
BRITE and CloudSim. Also, it proposes the direction to link between
them.
Abstract: This article is devoted to the numerical solution of
large-scale quadratic eigenvalue problems. Such problems arise in
a wide variety of applications, such as the dynamic analysis of
structural mechanical systems, acoustic systems, fluid mechanics,
and signal processing. We first introduce a generalized second-order
Krylov subspace based on a pair of square matrices and two initial
vectors and present a generalized second-order Arnoldi process for
constructing an orthonormal basis of the generalized second-order
Krylov subspace. Then, by using the projection technique and the
refined projection technique, we propose a restarted generalized
second-order Arnoldi method and a restarted refined generalized
second-order Arnoldi method for computing some eigenpairs of largescale
quadratic eigenvalue problems. Some theoretical results are also
presented. Some numerical examples are presented to illustrate the
effectiveness of the proposed methods.
Abstract: This paper may be considered as combination of both pervasive computing and Differential GPS (global positioning satellite) which relates to control automatic traffic signals in such a
way as to pre-empt normal signal operation and permit lifesaving vehicles. Before knowing the arrival of the lifesaving vehicles from
the signal there is a chance of clearing the traffic. Traffic signal
preemption system includes a vehicle equipped with onboard computer system capable of capturing diagnostic information and
estimated location of the lifesaving vehicle using the information provided by GPS receiver connected to the onboard computer system
and transmitting the information-s using a wireless transmitter via a
wireless network. The fleet management system connected to a
wireless receiver is capable of receiving the information transmitted
by the lifesaving vehicle .A computer is also located at the
intersection uses corrected vehicle position, speed & direction
measurements, in conjunction with previously recorded data defining
approach routes to the intersection, to determine the optimum time to
switch a traffic light controller to preemption mode so that lifesaving
vehicles can pass safely. In case when the ambulance need to take a
“U" turn in a heavy traffic area we suggest a solution. Now we are
going to make use of computerized median which uses LINKED
BLOCKS (removable) to solve the above problem.
Abstract: The drug discovery process starts with protein
identification because proteins are responsible for many functions
required for maintenance of life. Protein identification further needs
determination of protein function. Proposed method develops a
classifier for human protein function prediction. The model uses
decision tree for classification process. The protein function is
predicted on the basis of matched sequence derived features per each
protein function. The research work includes the development of a
tool which determines sequence derived features by analyzing
different parameters. The other sequence derived features are
determined using various web based tools.
Abstract: In this study arsenate [As(V)] removal from drinking water by coagulation process was investigated. Ferric chloride (FeCl3.6H2O) and ferrous sulfate (FeSO4.7H2O) were used as coagulant. The effects of major operating variables such as coagulant dose (1–30 mg/L) and pH (5.5–9.5) were investigated. Ferric chloride and ferrous sulfate were found as effective and reliable coagulant due to required dose, residual arsenate and coagulant concentration. Optimum pH values for maximum arsenate removal for ferrous sulfate and ferric chloride were found as 8 and 7.5. The arsenate removal efficiency decreased at neutral and acidic pH values for Fe(II) and at the high acidic and high alkaline pH for Fe(III). It was found that the increase of coagulant dose caused a substantial increase in the arsenate removal. But above a certain ferric chloride and ferrous sulfate dosage, the increase in arsenate removal was not significant. Ferric chloride and ferrous sulfate dose above 8 mg/L slightly increased arsenate removal.
Abstract: Due to increased number of terrorist attacks in recent years, loads induced by explosions need to be incorporated in building designs. For safer performance of a structure, its foundation should have sufficient strength and stability. Therefore, prior to any reconstruction or rehabilitation of a building subjected to blast, it is important to examine adverse effects on the foundation caused by blast induced ground shocks. This paper evaluates the effects of a buried explosion on a pile foundation. It treats the dynamic response of the pile in saturated sand, using explicit dynamic nonlinear finite element software LS-DYNA. The blast induced wave propagation in the soil and the horizontal deformation of pile are presented and the results are discussed. Further, a parametric study is carried out to evaluate the effect of varying the explosive shape on the pile response. This information can be used to evaluate the vulnerability of piled foundations to credible blast events as well as develop guidance for their design.
Abstract: The effect of concentration of reduction agent of
sodium borohydrate (NaBH4) on the properties of silicon
nanoparticles synthesized via microemulsion route is reported. In
this work, the concentration of the silicon tetrachloride (SiCl4) that
served as silicon source with sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and
polyethylene glycol (PEG) as stabilizer and surfactant, respectively,
are keep fixed. Four samples with varied concentration of NaBH4
from 0.05 M to 0.20 M were synthesized. It was found that the lowest
concentration of NaBH4 gave better formation of silicon
nanoparticles.
Abstract: Despite the internet, which is one of the mass media
that has become quite common in recent years, the relationship of
Advertisement with Television and Cinema, which have always
drawn attention of researchers as basic media and where visual use is
in the foreground, have also become the subject of various studies.
Based on the assumption that the known fundamental effects of
advertisements on consumers are closely related to the creative
process of advertisements as well as the nature and characteristics of
the medium where they are used, these basic mass media (Television
and Cinema) and the consumer motivations of the advertisements
they broadcast have become a focus of study.
Given that the viewers of the mass media in question have shifted
from a passive position to a more active one especially in recent years
and approach contents of advertisements, as they do all contents, in a
more critical and “pitiless" manner, it is possible to say that
individuals make more use of advertisements than in the past and
combine their individual goals with the goals of the advertisements.
This study, which aims at finding out what the goals of these new
individual advertisement use are, how they are shaped by the distinct
characteristics of Television and Cinema, where visuality takes
precedence as basic mass media, and what kind of places they occupy
in the minds of consumers, has determined consumers- motivations
as: “Entertainment", “Escapism", “Play", “Monitoring/Discovery",
“Opposite Sex" and “Aspirations and Role Models".
This study intends to reveal the differences or similarities among
the needs and hence the gratifications of viewers who consume
advertisements on Television or at the Cinema, which are two basic
media where visuality is prioritized.
Abstract: The performance of a type of fuzzy sliding mode control is researched by considering the nonlinear characteristic of a missile-target interception problem to obtain a robust interception process. The variable boundary layer by using fuzzy logic is proposed to reduce the chattering around the switching surface then is applied to the interception model which was derived. The performances of the sliding mode control with constant and fuzzy boundary layer are compared at the end of the study and the results are evaluated.
Abstract: This paper investigates the structure and content of the
wine lists in upscale restaurants in Portugal (N=61). The respondents
considered that a wine list should be easy to use and to modify, welldesigned,
modern and varied. Respondents also stated that they
perform on average 6 revisions to the wine list per year. The
restaurant owner, the restaurant manager and the sommelier were the
main persons in charge of the wine list design. One of the most
important reasons for selecting wines across most restaurants was to
‘complement the menu’ and ‘pairing food with wine’. Restaurants
also reported to be relatively independent from suppliers and
magazine evaluations. Moreover, this work revealed that the
restaurant wine list is considered by restaurateurs as a strategic tool to
sell wine as a complement to the menu, to improve customer
satisfaction and loyalty, to increase restaurant value and to enhance a
successful positioning.
Abstract: The present experimental investigation brings about
a comparative study of lactic acid production by pure strains of
Lactobacilli (1) L. delbreuckii (NCIM2025), (2) L. pentosus (NCIM
2912), (3) Lactobacillus sp.(NCIM 2734, (4) Lactobacillus sp.
(NCIM2084) and coculture of strain-1 and Stain-2 in solid bed of
wheat bran, under the influence of different nitrogen sources such as
baker-s yeast, meat extract and proteose peptone. Among the pure
cultures, strain-3 attained lowest pH value of 3.44, hence highest acid
formation 46.41 g/L, while the coculture attained an overall
maximum value 47.56 g/L lactic acid (pH 3.38) at 15 g/L and 20 g/L
level of baker-s yeast, respectively.
Abstract: In this paper, a novel approach is presented
for designing multiplier-free state-space digital filters. The
multiplier-free design is obtained by finding power-of-2 coefficients
and also quantizing the state variables to power-of-2
numbers. Expressions for the noise variance are derived for the
quantized state vector and the output of the filter. A “structuretransformation
matrix" is incorporated in these expressions. It
is shown that quantization effects can be minimized by properly
designing the structure-transformation matrix. Simulation
results are very promising and illustrate the design algorithm.
Abstract: The current methods of predictive controllers are
utilized for those processes in which the rate of output variations is
not high. For such processes, therefore, stability can be achieved by
implementing the constrained predictive controller or applying
infinite prediction horizon. When the rate of the output growth is
high (e.g. for unstable nonminimum phase process) the stabilization
seems to be problematic. In order to avoid this, it is suggested to
change the method in the way that: first, the prediction error growth
should be decreased at the early stage of the prediction horizon, and
second, the rate of the error variation should be penalized. The
growth of the error is decreased through adjusting its weighting
coefficients in the cost function. Reduction in the error variation is
possible by adding the first order derivate of the error into the cost
function. By studying different examples it is shown that using these
two remedies together, the closed-loop stability of unstable
nonminimum phase process can be achieved.
Abstract: The boundary layer flow and heat transfer on a
stretched surface moving with prescribed skin friction is studied for
permeable surface. The surface temperature is assumed to vary
inversely with the vertical direction x for n = -1. The skin friction at
the surface scales as (x-1/2) at m = 0. The constants m and n are the
indices of the power law velocity and temperature exponent
respectively. Similarity solutions are obtained for the boundary layer
equations subject to power law temperature and velocity variation.
The effect of various governing parameters, such as the buoyancy
parameter λ and the suction/injection parameter fw for air (Pr = 0.72)
are studied. The choice of n and m ensures that the used similarity
solutions are x independent. The results show that, assisting flow (λ >
0) enhancing the heat transfer coefficient along the surface for any
constant value of fw. Furthermore, injection increases the heat
transfer coefficient but suction reduces it at constant λ.
Abstract: New methodologies for XOR-XNOR circuits are
proposed to improve the speed and power as these circuits are basic
building blocks of many arithmetic circuits. This paper evaluates and
compares the performance of various XOR-XNOR circuits. The
performance of the XOR-XNOR circuits based on TSMC 0.18μm
process models at all range of the supply voltage starting from 0.6V
to 3.3V is evaluated by the comparison of the simulation results
obtained from HSPICE. Simulation results reveal that the proposed
circuit exhibit lower PDP and EDP, more power efficient and faster
when compared with best available XOR-XNOR circuits in the
literature.
