Abstract: This paper presents a formant-tracking linear prediction
(FTLP) model for speech processing in noise. The main focus of this
work is the detection of formant trajectory based on Hidden Markov
Models (HMM), for improved formant estimation in noise. The
approach proposed in this paper provides a systematic framework for
modelling and utilization of a time- sequence of peaks which satisfies
continuity constraints on parameter; the within peaks are modelled
by the LP parameters. The formant tracking LP model estimation
is composed of three stages: (1) a pre-cleaning multi-band spectral
subtraction stage to reduce the effect of residue noise on formants
(2) estimation stage where an initial estimate of the LP model of
speech for each frame is obtained (3) a formant classification using
probability models of formants and Viterbi-decoders. The evaluation
results for the estimation of the formant tracking LP model tested
in Gaussian white noise background, demonstrate that the proposed
combination of the initial noise reduction stage with formant tracking
and LPC variable order analysis, results in a significant reduction in
errors and distortions. The performance was evaluated with noisy
natual vowels extracted from international french and English vocabulary
speech signals at SNR value of 10dB. In each case, the
estimated formants are compared to reference formants.
Abstract: In this paper, we have proposed a low cost optimized solution for the movement of a three-arm manipulator using Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). A scheme is given for optimizing the movement of robotic arm with the help of Genetic Algorithm so that the minimum energy consumption criteria can be achieved. As compared to Direct Kinematics, Inverse Kinematics evolved two solutions out of which the best-fit solution is selected with the help of Genetic Algorithm and is kept in search space for future use. The Inverse Kinematics, Fitness Value evaluation and Binary Encoding like tasks are simulated and tested. Although, three factors viz. Movement, Friction and Least Settling Time (or Min. Vibration) are used for finding the Fitness Function / Fitness Values, however some more factors can also be considered.
Abstract: This paper introduces and studies new indexing techniques for content-based queries in images databases. Indexing is the key to providing sophisticated, accurate and fast searches for queries in image data. This research describes a new indexing approach, which depends on linear modeling of signals, using bases for modeling. A basis is a set of chosen images, and modeling an image is a least-squares approximation of the image as a linear combination of the basis images. The coefficients of the basis images are taken together to serve as index for that image. The paper describes the implementation of the indexing scheme, and presents the findings of our extensive evaluation that was conducted to optimize (1) the choice of the basis matrix (B), and (2) the size of the index A (N). Furthermore, we compare the performance of our indexing scheme with other schemes. Our results show that our scheme has significantly higher performance.
Abstract: Air emissions from waste treatment plants often
consist of a combination of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs)
and odors. Hydrogen sulfide is one of the major odorous gases
present in the waste emissions coming from municipal wastewater
treatment facilities. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is odorous, highly toxic
and flammable. Exposure to lower concentrations can result in eye
irritation, a sore throat and cough, shortness of breath, and fluid in
the lungs. Biofiltration has become a widely accepted technology for
treating air streams containing H2S. When compared with other nonbiological
technologies, biofilter is more cost-effective for treating large
volumes of air containing low concentrations of biodegradable compounds.
Optimization of biofilter media is essential for many reasons such as:
providing a higher surface area for biofilm growth, low pressure drop,
physical stability, and good moisture retention. In this work, a novel
biofilter media is developed and tested at a pumping station of a
municipality located in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The
media is found to be very effective (>99%) in removing H2S
concentrations that are expected in pumping stations under steady
state and shock loading conditions.
Abstract: This work presents a matched field processing (MFP)
algorithm based on Dopplerlet transform for estimating the motion
parameters of a sound source moving along a straight line and with a
constant speed by using a piecewise strategy, which can significantly
reduce the computational burden. Monte Carlo simulation results and
an experimental result are presented to verify the effectiveness of the
algorithm advocated.
Abstract: The increasing complexity of software development based on peer to peer networks makes necessary the creation of new frameworks in order to simplify the developer-s task. Additionally, some applications, e.g. fire detection or security alarms may require real-time constraints and the high level definition of these features eases the application development. In this paper, a service model based on a component model with real-time features is proposed. The high-level model will abstract developers from implementation tasks, such as discovery, communication, security or real-time requirements. The model is oriented to deploy services on small mobile devices, such as sensors, mobile phones and PDAs, where the computation is light-weight. Services can be composed among them by means of the port concept to form complex ad-hoc systems and their implementation is carried out using a component language called UM-RTCOM. In order to apply our proposals a fire detection application is described.
Abstract: In this paper we consider the issue of distributed adaptive estimation over sensor networks. To deal with more realistic scenario, different variance for observation noise is assumed for sensors in the network. To solve the problem of different variance of observation noise, the proposed method is divided into two phases: I) Estimating each sensor-s observation noise variance and II) using the estimated variances to obtain the desired parameter. Our proposed algorithm is based on a diffusion least mean square (LMS) implementation with linear combiner model. In the proposed algorithm, the step-size parameter the coefficients of linear combiner are adjusted according to estimated observation noise variances. As the simulation results show, the proposed algorithm considerably improves the diffusion LMS algorithm given in literature.
Abstract: An electrocardiogram (ECG) feature extraction system
based on the calculation of the complex resonance frequency
employing Prony-s method is developed. Prony-s method is applied
on five different classes of ECG signals- arrhythmia as a finite sum
of exponentials depending on the signal-s poles and the resonant
complex frequencies. Those poles and resonance frequencies of the
ECG signals- arrhythmia are evaluated for a large number of each
arrhythmia. The ECG signals of lead II (ML II) were taken from
MIT-BIH database for five different types. These are the ventricular
couplet (VC), ventricular tachycardia (VT), ventricular bigeminy
(VB), and ventricular fibrillation (VF) and the normal (NR). This
novel method can be extended to any number of arrhythmias.
Different classification techniques were tried using neural networks
(NN), K nearest neighbor (KNN), linear discriminant analysis (LDA)
and multi-class support vector machine (MC-SVM).
Abstract: In this paper, creep constitutive equations of base
(Parent) and weld materials of the weldment for cold-drawn 304L
stainless steel have been obtained experimentally. For this purpose,
test samples have been generated from cold drawn bars and weld
material according to the ASTM standard. The creep behavior and
properties have been examined for these materials by conducting uniaxial
creep tests. Constant temperatures and constant load uni-axial
creep tests have been carried out at two high temperatures, 680 and
720 oC, subjected to constant loads, which produce initial stresses
ranging from 240 to 360 MPa. The experimental data have been used
to obtain the creep constitutive parameters using numerical
optimization techniques.
Abstract: The paper is devoted to stochastic analysis of finite
dimensional difference equation with dependent on ergodic Markov
chain increments, which are proportional to small parameter ". A
point-form solution of this difference equation may be represented
as vertexes of a time-dependent continuous broken line given on the
segment [0,1] with "-dependent scaling of intervals between vertexes.
Tending " to zero one may apply stochastic averaging and diffusion
approximation procedures and construct continuous approximation of
the initial stochastic iterations as an ordinary or stochastic Ito differential
equation. The paper proves that for sufficiently small " these
equations may be successfully applied not only to approximate finite
number of iterations but also for asymptotic analysis of iterations,
when number of iterations tends to infinity.
Abstract: This paper employs a new approach to regulate the
blood glucose level of type I diabetic patient under an intensive
insulin treatment. The closed-loop control scheme incorporates
expert knowledge about treatment by using reinforcement learning
theory to maintain the normoglycemic average of 80 mg/dl and the
normal condition for free plasma insulin concentration in severe
initial state. The insulin delivery rate is obtained off-line by using Qlearning
algorithm, without requiring an explicit model of the
environment dynamics. The implementation of the insulin delivery
rate, therefore, requires simple function evaluation and minimal
online computations. Controller performance is assessed in terms of
its ability to reject the effect of meal disturbance and to overcome the
variability in the glucose-insulin dynamics from patient to patient.
Computer simulations are used to evaluate the effectiveness of the
proposed technique and to show its superiority in controlling
hyperglycemia over other existing algorithms
Abstract: The world's population continues to grow at a quarter of a million people per day, increasing the consumption of energy. This has made the world to face the problem of energy crisis now days. In response to the energy crisis, the principles of renewable energy gained popularity. There are much advancement made in developing the wind and solar energy farms across the world. These energy farms are not enough to meet the energy requirement of world. This has attracted investors to procure new sources of energy to be substituted. Among these sources, extraction of energy from the waves is considered as best option. The world oceans contain enough energy to meet the requirement of world. Significant advancements in design and technology are being made to make waves as a continuous source of energy. One major hurdle in launching wave energy devices in a developing country like Pakistan is the initial cost. A simple, reliable and cost effective wave energy converter (WEC) is required to meet the nation-s energy need. This paper will present a novel design proposed by team SAS for harnessing wave energy. This paper has three major sections. The first section will give a brief and concise view of ocean wave creation, propagation and the energy carried by them. The second section will explain the designing of SAS-2. A gear chain mechanism is used for transferring the energy from the buoy to a rotary generator. The third section will explain the manufacturing of scaled down model for SAS-2 .Many modifications are made in the trouble shooting stage. The design of SAS-2 is simple and very less maintenance is required. SAS-2 is producing electricity at Clifton. The initial cost of SAS-2 is very low. This has proved SAS- 2 as one of the cost effective and reliable source of harnessing wave energy for developing countries.
Abstract: Wheat gluten hydrolyzates (WGHs) and anchovy fine
powder hydrolyzates (AFPHs) were produced at 300 MPa using
combinations of Flavourzyme 500MG (F), Alcalase 2.4L (A),
Marugoto E (M) and Protamex (P), and then were compared to those
produced at ambient pressure concerning the contents of soluble solid
(SS), soluble nitrogen and electrophoretic profiles. The contents of SS
in the WGHs and AFPHs increased up to 87.2% according to the
increase in enzyme number both at high and ambient pressure. Based
on SS content, the optimum enzyme combinations for one-, two-,
three- and four-enzyme hydrolysis were determined as F, FA, FAM
and FAMP, respectively. Similar trends were found for the contents of
total soluble nitrogen (TSN) and TCA-soluble nitrogen (TCASN). The
contents of SS, TSN and TCASN in the hydrolyzates together with
electrophoretic mobility maps indicates that the high-pressure
treatment of this study accelerated protein hydrolysis compared to
ambient-pressure treatment.
Abstract: Mobile agent has motivated the creation of a new
methodology for parallel computing. We introduce a methodology
for the creation of parallel applications on the network. The proposed
Mobile-Agent parallel processing framework uses multiple Javamobile
Agents. Each mobile agent can travel to the specified
machine in the network to perform its tasks. We also introduce the
concept of master agent, which is Java object capable of
implementing a particular task of the target application. Master agent
is dynamically assigns the task to mobile agents. We have developed
and tested a prototype application: Mobile Agent Based Parallel
Computing. Boosted by the inherited benefits of using Java and
Mobile Agents, our proposed methodology breaks the barriers
between the environments, and could potentially exploit in a parallel
manner all the available computational resources on the network.
This paper elaborates performance issues of a mobile agent for
parallel computing.
Abstract: Modeling of a heterogeneous industrial fixed bed
reactor for selective dehydrogenation of heavy paraffin with Pt-Sn-
Al2O3 catalyst has been the subject of current study. By applying
mass balance, momentum balance for appropriate element of reactor
and using pressure drop, rate and deactivation equations, a detailed
model of the reactor has been obtained. Mass balance equations have
been written for five different components. In order to estimate
reactor production by the passage of time, the reactor model which is
a set of partial differential equations, ordinary differential equations
and algebraic equations has been solved numerically.
Paraffins, olefins, dienes, aromatics and hydrogen mole percent as
a function of time and reactor radius have been found by numerical
solution of the model. Results of model have been compared with
industrial reactor data at different operation times. The comparison
successfully confirms validity of proposed model.
Abstract: This paper describes the two actual tendencies in the
software development process usage: 'Scrum' and 'work in home
office'. It-s exposed the four main challenges to adopt Scrum
framework for distributed teams in this cited kind of work. The
challenges are mainly based on the communication problems due
distances since the Scrum encourages the team to work together in
the same room, and this is not possible when people work distributed
in their homes.

square-law characteristic of the MOS transistor in the saturation

using HSPICE software. The mixer has a third-order inter the power
consumption is 271uW from a single 1.2V power supply. One of the
features of the proposed design is using two MOS transistors

power consumption. This technique provides a GHz bandwidth
response and low power consumption.
Abstract: In-core memory requirement is a bottleneck in solving
large three dimensional Navier-Stokes finite element problem
formulations using sparse direct solvers. Out-of-core solution
strategy is a viable alternative to reduce the in-core memory
requirements while solving large scale problems. This study
evaluates the performance of various out-of-core sequential solvers
based on multifrontal or supernodal techniques in the context of
finite element formulations for three dimensional problems on a
Windows platform. Here three different solvers, HSL_MA78,
MUMPS and PARDISO are compared. The performance of these
solvers is evaluated on a 64-bit machine with 16GB RAM for finite
element formulation of flow through a rectangular channel. It is
observed that using out-of-core PARDISO solver, relatively large
problems can be solved. The implementation of Newton and
modified Newton's iteration is also discussed.
