Abstract: Sorting appears the most attention among all computational tasks over the past years because sorted data is at the heart of many computations. Sorting is of additional importance to parallel computing because of its close relation to the task of routing data among processes, which is an essential part of many parallel algorithms. Many parallel sorting algorithms have been investigated for a variety of parallel computer architectures. In this paper, three parallel sorting algorithms have been implemented and compared in terms of their overall execution time. The algorithms implemented are the odd-even transposition sort, parallel merge sort and parallel rank sort. Cluster of Workstations or Windows Compute Cluster has been used to compare the algorithms implemented. The C# programming language is used to develop the sorting algorithms. The MPI (Message Passing Interface) library has been selected to establish the communication and synchronization between processors. The time complexity for each parallel sorting algorithm will also be mentioned and analyzed.
Abstract: This paper aims to argue that religion and Faith-based
Organizations (FBOs) contribute to building democratic process
through the provision of education in Sierra Leone. Sierra Leone
experienced a civil war from 1991 to 2002 and about 70 percent of the
population lives in poverty. While the government has been in the
process of rebuilding the nation, many forms of Civil Society
Organizations (CSOs), including FBOs, have played a significant role
in promoting social development. Education plays an important role in
supporting people-s democratic movements through knowledge
acquisition, spiritual enlightenment and empowerment. This paper
discusses religious tolerance in Sierra Leone and how FBOs have
contributed to the provision of primary education in Sierra Leone. This
study is based on the author-s field research, which involved
interviews with teachers and development stakeholders, notably
government officials, Non-governmental Organizations (NGOs) and
FBOs, as well as questionnaires completed by pupils, parents and
teachers.
Abstract: In the present study, the pressure drop and laminar convection heat transfer characteristics of nanofluids in microchannel heat sink with square duct are numerically investigated. The water based nanofluids created with Al2O3 and CuO particles in four different volume fractions of 0%, 0.5%, 1%, 1.5% and 2% are used to analyze their effects on heat transfer and the pressure drop. Under the laminar, steady-state flow conditions, the finite volume method is used to solve the governing equations of heat transfer. Mixture Model is considered to simulate the nanofluid flow. For verification of used numerical method, the results obtained from numerical calculations were compared with the results in literature for both pure water and the nanofluids in different volume fractions. The distributions of the particles in base fluid are assumed to be uniform. The results are evaluated in terms of Nusselt number, the pressure drop and heat transfer enhancement. Analysis shows that the nanofluids enhance heat transfer while the Reynolds number and the volume fractions are increasing. The best overall enhancement was obtained at φ=%2 and Re=100 for CuO-water nanofluid.
Abstract: To improve HSE standards, oil and gas industries are
interested in using remotely controlled and autonomous robots instead
of human workers on offshore platforms. In addition to earlier reason
this strategy would increase potential revenue, efficient usage of
work experts and even would allow operations in more remote areas.
This article is the presentation of a custom climbing robot, called
Walloid, designed for offshore platform topside automation. This 4
arms climbing robot with grippers is an ongoing project at University
of Oslo.
Abstract: This paper is to explore the relationship and the level
of stock market integration of the Asian countries, primarily
concentrating on Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and South Korea,
with the world from January 1997 to December 2009. The degree of
short-run and long-run stock market integration of those Asian
countries are analyzed in order to determine the significance of series
of regional and world financial crises, liberalization policies and
other financial reforms in influencing the level of stock market
integration. To test for cointegration, this paper applies coefficient
correlation, univariate regression analyses, cointegration tests, and
vector autoregressive models (VAR) by using the four Asian stock
markets main indices and the MSCI World index. The empirical
findings from this work reveal that there is no long-run stock market
integration for the four countries and the world market. However,
there is short run integration.
Abstract: In the project FleGSens, a wireless sensor network
(WSN) for the surveillance of critical areas and properties is currently developed which incorporates mechanisms to ensure information
security. The intended prototype consists of 200 sensor nodes for
monitoring a 500m long land strip. The system is focused on ensuring
integrity and authenticity of generated alarms and availability in the
presence of an attacker who may even compromise a limited number
of sensor nodes. In this paper, two of the main protocols developed
in the project are presented, a tracking protocol to provide secure
detection of trespasses within the monitored area and a protocol for secure detection of node failures. Simulation results of networks
containing 200 and 2000 nodes as well as the results of the first prototype comprising a network of 16 nodes are presented. The focus of the simulations and prototype are functional testing of the protocols
and particularly demonstrating the impact and cost of several attacks.
Abstract: The spectral action balance equation is an equation that
used to simulate short-crested wind-generated waves in shallow water
areas such as coastal regions and inland waters. This equation consists
of two spatial dimensions, wave direction, and wave frequency which
can be solved by finite difference method. When this equation with
dominating propagation velocity terms are discretized using central
differences, stability problems occur when the grid spacing is chosen
too coarse. In this paper, we introduce the splitting modified donorcell
scheme for avoiding stability problems and prove that it is
consistent to the modified donor-cell scheme with same accuracy. The
splitting modified donor-cell scheme was adopted to split the wave
spectral action balance equation into four one-dimensional problems,
which for each small problem obtains the independently tridiagonal
linear systems. For each smaller system can be solved by direct or
iterative methods at the same time which is very fast when performed
by a multi-cores computer.
Abstract: Team distillation assisted by microwave extraction
(SDAM) considered as accelerated technique extraction is a
combination of microwave heating and steam distillation, performed
at atmospheric pressure. SDAM has been compared with the same
technique coupled with the cryogrinding of seeds (SDAM -CG).
Isolation and concentration of volatile compounds are performed by a
single stage for the extraction of essential oil from Cuminum
cyminum seeds. The essential oils extracted by these two methods for
5 min were quantitatively (yield) and qualitatively (aromatic profile)
no similar. These methods yield an essential oil with higher amounts
of more valuable oxygenated compounds, and allow substantial
savings of costs, in terms of time, energy and plant material. SDAM
and SDAM-CG is a green technology and appears as a good
alternative for the extraction of essential oils from aromatic plants.
Abstract: When the profile information of an existing road is
missing or not up-to-date and the parameters of the vertical
alignment are needed for engineering analysis, the engineer has to recreate
the geometric design features of the road alignment using
collected profile data. The profile data may be collected using
traditional surveying methods, global positioning systems, or digital
imagery. This paper develops a method that estimates the parameters
of the geometric features that best characterize the existing vertical
alignments in terms of tangents and the expressions of the curve, that
may be symmetrical, asymmetrical, reverse, and complex vertical
curves. The method is implemented using an Excel-based
optimization method that minimizes the differences between the
observed profile and the profiles estimated from the equations of the
vertical curve. The method uses a 'wireframe' representation of the
profile that makes the proposed method applicable to all types of
vertical curves. A secondary contribution of this paper is to introduce
the properties of the equal-arc asymmetrical curve that has been
recently developed in the highway geometric design field.
Abstract: Isobaric vapor-liquid equilibrium measurements are reported for the binary mixtures of Mesitylene + 1-Heptanol and Mesitylene + 1-Octanol at 97.3 kPa. The measurements have been performed using a vapor recirculating type (modified Othmer's) equilibrium still. Both the mixtures show positive deviation from ideality. The Mesitylene + 1-Heptanol mixture forms an azeotrope whereas Mesitylene + 1- Octanol form a non – azeotropic mixture. The activity coefficients have been calculated taking into consideration the vapor phase nonideality. The data satisfy the thermodynamic consistency tests of Herington, and Hirata. The activity coefficients have been satisfactorily correlated by means of the Margules, Redlich-Kister, Wilson, Black, and NRTL equations. The activity coefficient values have also been obtained by UNIFAC method.
Abstract: In this work a novel approach for color image
segmentation using higher order entropy as a textural feature for
determination of thresholds over a two dimensional image histogram
is discussed. A similar approach is applied to achieve multi-level
thresholding in both grayscale and color images. The paper discusses
two methods of color image segmentation using RGB space as the
standard processing space. The threshold for segmentation is decided
by the maximization of conditional entropy in the two dimensional
histogram of the color image separated into three grayscale images of
R, G and B. The features are first developed independently for the
three ( R, G, B ) spaces, and combined to get different color
component segmentation. By considering local maxima instead of the
maximum of conditional entropy yields multiple thresholds for the
same image which forms the basis for multilevel thresholding.
Abstract: The present paper considers the steady free
convection boundary layer flow of a viscoelastics fluid with constant
temperature in the presence of heat generation. The boundary layer
equations are an order higher than those for the Newtonian (viscous)
fluid and the adherence boundary conditions are insufficient to
determine the solution of these equations completely. The governing
boundary layer equations are first transformed into non-dimensional
form by using special dimensionless group. Computations are
performed numerically by using Keller-box method by augmenting
an extra boundary condition at infinity and the results are displayed
graphically to illustrate the influence of viscoelastic K, heat
generation γ , and Prandtl Number, Pr parameters on the velocity
and temperature profiles. The results of the surface shear stress in
terms of the local skin friction and the surface rate of heat transfer in
terms of the local Nusselt number for a selection of the heat
generation parameterγ (=0.0, 0.2, 0.5, 0.8, 1.0) are obtained and
presented in both tabular and graphical formats. Without effect of the
internal heat generation inside the fluid domain for which we take
γ = 0.0, the present numerical results show an excellent agreement
with previous publication.
Abstract: In this paper, we apply the FM methodology to the
cross-section of Romanian-listed common stocks and investigate the
explanatory power of market beta on the cross-section of commons
stock returns from Bucharest Stock Exchange. Various assumptions
are empirically tested, such us linearity, market efficiency, the “no
systematic effect of non-beta risk" hypothesis or the positive
expected risk-return trade-off hypothesis. We find that the Romanian
stock market shows the same properties as the other emerging
markets in terms of efficiency and significance of the linear riskreturn
models. Our analysis included weekly returns from January
2002 until May 2010 and the portfolio formation, estimation and
testing was performed in a rolling manner using 51 observations (one
year) for each stage of the analysis.
Abstract: Group work, projects and discussions are important
components of teacher education courses whether they are face-toface,
blended or exclusively online formats. This paper examines the varieties of tasks and challenges with this learning format in a face to
face class teacher education class providing specific examples of both
failure and success from both the student and instructor perspective.
The discussion begins with a brief history of collaborative and cooperative learning, moves to an exploration of the promised
benefits and then takes a look at some of the challenges which can
arise specifically from the use of new technologies. The discussion concludes with guidelines and specific suggestions.
Abstract: The control of sprayer boom undesired vibrations pose a great challenge to investigators due to various disturbances and conditions. Sprayer boom movements lead to reduce of spread efficiency and crop yield. This paper describes the design of a novel control method for an active suspension system applying proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller with an active force control (AFC) scheme integration of an iterative learning algorithm employed to a sprayer boom. The iterative learning as an intelligent method is principally used as a method to calculate the best value of the estimated inertia of the sprayer boom needed for the AFC loop. Results show that the proposed AFC-based scheme performs much better than the standard PID control technique. Also, this shows that the system is more robust and accurate.
Abstract: In this paper, periodic force operation of a wastewater treatment process has been studied for the improved process performance. A previously developed dynamic model for the process is used to conduct the performance analysis. The static version of the model was utilized first to determine the optimal productivity conditions for the process. Then, feed flow rate in terms of dilution rate i.e. (D) is transformed into sinusoidal function. Nonlinear model predictive control algorithm is utilized to regulate the amplitude and period of the sinusoidal function. The parameters of the feed cyclic functions are determined which resulted in improved productivity than the optimal productivity under steady state conditions. The improvement in productivity is found to be marginal and is satisfactory in substrate conversion compared to that of the optimal condition and to the steady state condition, which corresponds to the average value of the periodic function. Successful results were also obtained in the presence of modeling errors and external disturbances.
Abstract: As chip manufacturing technology is suddenly on the
threshold of major evaluation, which shrinks chip in size and
performance, LFSR (Linear Feedback Shift Register) is implemented
in layout level which develops the low power consumption chip,
using recent CMOS, sub-micrometer layout tools. Thus LFSR
counter can be a new trend setter in cryptography and is also
beneficial as compared to GRAY & BINARY counter and variety of
other applications.
This paper compares 3 architectures in terms of the hardware
implementation, CMOS layout and power consumption, using
Microwind CMOS layout tool. Thus it provides solution to a low
power architecture implementation of LFSR in CMOS VLSI.
Abstract: Many algorithms are available for sorting the unordered elements. Most important of them are Bubble sort, Heap sort, Insertion sort and Shell sort. These algorithms have their own pros and cons. Shell Sort which is an enhanced version of insertion sort, reduces the number of swaps of the elements being sorted to minimize the complexity and time as compared to insertion sort. Shell sort improves the efficiency of insertion sort by quickly shifting values to their destination. Average sort time is O(n1.25), while worst-case time is O(n1.5). It performs certain iterations. In each iteration it swaps some elements of the array in such a way that in last iteration when the value of h is one, the number of swaps will be reduced. Donald L. Shell invented a formula to calculate the value of ?h?. this work focuses to identify some improvement in the conventional Shell sort algorithm. ''Enhanced Shell Sort algorithm'' is an improvement in the algorithm to calculate the value of 'h'. It has been observed that by applying this algorithm, number of swaps can be reduced up to 60 percent as compared to the existing algorithm. In some other cases this enhancement was found faster than the existing algorithms available.
Abstract: This study presents the numerical simulation of
optimum pin-fin heat sink with air impinging cooling by using
Taguchi method. 9 L ( 4 3 ) orthogonal array is selected as a plan for
the four design-parameters with three levels. The governing
equations are discretized by using the
control-volume-based-finite-difference method with a power-law
scheme on the non-uniform staggered grid. We solved the coupling of
the velocity and the pressure terms of momentum equations using
SIMPLEC algorithm. We employ the k −ε two-equations
turbulence model to describe the turbulent behavior. The parameters
studied include fin height H (35mm-45mm), inter-fin spacing a , b ,
and c (2 mm-6.4 mm), and Reynolds number ( Re = 10000- 25000).
The objective of this study is to examine the effects of the fin
spacings and fin height on the thermal resistance and to find the
optimum group by using the Taguchi method. We found that the fin
spacings from the center to the edge of the heat sink gradually
extended, and the longer the fin’s height the better the results. The
optimum group is 3 1 2 3 H a b c . In addition, the effects of parameters are
ranked by importance as a , H , c , and b .
Abstract: There are many studies in the literature on
institutional investors- efforts to improve corporate governance,
generally focused on the role of pension funds and private equity
firms. There are only a few studies that analyze the influence of
development banks in the governance of investee companies. The
objective of this research is to examine the role of the Brazilian
Development Bank (BNDES) in the governance of listed companies.
Our analysis provides evidence that companies in which BNDES is a
shareholder have better governance.
