Abstract: This paper is primarily addressed to teachers who stand on the threshold of bringing technology and new media into their classrooms. Technology and new media, such as smart phones and tablets have changed the face of communication in general and of language teaching more specifically. New media has widespread appeal among young people in particular, so it is in the teacher’s best interests to bring new media into their lessons. It is the author’s firm belief that technology will never replace the teacher, but it is without question that the twenty-first century teacher must employ technology and new media in some form, or run the risk of failure. The level that one chooses to incorporate new media within their class is entirely in their hands.
Abstract: Large scale computing infrastructures have been widely
developed with the core objective of providing a suitable platform
for high-performance and high-throughput computing. These systems
are designed to support resource-intensive and complex applications,
which can be found in many scientific and industrial areas. Currently,
large scale data-intensive applications are hindered by the high
latencies that result from the access to vastly distributed data.
Recent works have suggested that improving data locality is key to
move towards exascale infrastructures efficiently, as solutions to this
problem aim to reduce the bandwidth consumed in data transfers, and
the overheads that arise from them. There are several techniques that
attempt to move computations closer to the data. In this survey we
analyse the different mechanisms that have been proposed to provide
data locality for large scale high-performance and high-throughput
systems. This survey intends to assist scientific computing community
in understanding the various technical aspects and strategies that
have been reported in recent literature regarding data locality. As a
result, we present an overview of locality-oriented techniques, which
are grouped in four main categories: application development, task
scheduling, in-memory computing and storage platforms. Finally, the
authors include a discussion on future research lines and synergies
among the former techniques.
Abstract: In this paper, we present the results of a study of TiN thin films which are deposited by a Physical Vapour Deposition (PVD) and Ion Beam Assisted Deposition (IBAD). In the present investigation the subsequent ion implantation was provided with N5+ ions. The ion implantation was applied to enhance the mechanical properties of surface. The thin film deposition process exerts a number of effects such as crystallographic orientation, morphology, topography, densification of the films. A variety of analytic techniques were used for characterization, such as scratch test, calo test, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Atomic Force Microscope (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Energy Dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX).
Abstract: This paper reports an experimental work that aimed to investigate the effects of clay brick waste, as part of fine aggregate, on rendering mortar performance. The brick, in crushed form, was from a local brick manufacturer that was rejected due to being of-standard. It was used to replace 33.33 %, 50 %, 66.66 % and 100 % by weight of the quarry sand in mortar. Effects of the brick replacement on the mortar key properties intended for wall plastering were investigated; these are workability, compressive strength, flexural strength, linear shrinkage, water absorption by total immersion and by capillary suction. The results showed that as the brick replacement level increased, the mortar workability reduced. The linear shrinkage increases over time and decreases with the introduction of brick waste. The compressive and flexural strengths decrease with the increase of brick waste because of their great water absorption.
Abstract: This paper discusses a corner detection algorithm
for camera calibration. Calibration is a necessary step in many
computer vision and image processing applications. Robust
corner detection for an image of a checkerboard is required
to determine intrinsic and extrinsic parameters. In this paper,
an algorithm for fully automatic and robust X-corner detection
is presented. Checkerboard corner points are automatically
found in each image without user interaction or any prior
information regarding the number of rows or columns. The
approach represents each X-corner with a quadratic fitting
function. Using the fact that the X-corners are saddle points,
the coefficients in the fitting function are used to identify each
corner location. The automation of this process greatly simplifies
calibration. Our method is robust against noise and different
camera orientations. Experimental analysis shows the accuracy
of our method using actual images acquired at different camera
locations and orientations.
Abstract: In this paper, a design of H.263 based wireless video
transceiver is presented for wireless camera system. It uses standard
WIFI transceiver and the covering area is up to 100m. Furthermore the
standard H.263 video encoding technique is used for video
compression since wireless video transmitter is unable to transmit high
capacity raw data in real time and the implemented system is capable
of streaming at speed of less than 1Mbps using NTSC 720x480 video.
Abstract: In this paper, propose method that can user’s position
that based on database is built from single camera. Previous
positioning calculate distance by arrival-time of signal like GPS
(Global Positioning System), RF(Radio Frequency). However, these
previous method have weakness because these have large error range
according to signal interference. Method for solution estimate position
by camera sensor. But, signal camera is difficult to obtain relative
position data and stereo camera is difficult to provide real-time
position data because of a lot of image data, too. First of all, in this
research we build image database at space that able to provide
positioning service with single camera. Next, we judge similarity
through image matching of database image and transmission image
from user. Finally, we decide position of user through position of most
similar database image. For verification of propose method, we
experiment at real-environment like indoor and outdoor. Propose
method is wide positioning range and this method can verify not only
position of user but also direction.
Abstract: Neuromuscular control of posture as understood
through studies of responses to mechanical sudden acceleration
automatically has been previously demonstrated in individuals with
chronic ankle instability (CAI), but the presence of acute condition
has not been previously explored specially in a sudden acceleration.
The aim of this study was to determine neuromuscular control pattern
in those with and without unilateral acute ankle sprains. Design: Case
- control. Setting: University research laboratory. The sinker–card
protocol with surface translation was be used as a sudden acceleration
protocol with study of EMG upon 4 posture stabilizer muscles in two
sides of the body in response to sudden acceleration in forward and
backward directions. 20 young adult women in two groups (10 LAS;
23.9 ± 2.03 yrs and 10 normal; 26.4 ± 3.2 yrs). The data of EMG
were assessed by using multivariate test and one-way repeated
measures 2×2×4 ANOVA (P< 0.05). The results showed a significant
muscle by direction interaction. Higher TA activity of left and right
side in LAS group than normal group in forward direction
significantly be showed. Higher MGR activity in normal group than
LAS group in backward direction significantly showed. These
findings suggest that compared two sides of the body in two
directions for 4 muscles EMG activities between and within group for
neuromuscular control of posture in avoiding fall. EMG activations
of two sides of the body in lateral ankle sprain (LAS) patients were
symmetric significantly. Acute ankle instability following once ankle
sprains caused to coordinated temporal spatial patterns and strategy
selection.
Abstract: Web application architecture is important to achieve the desired performance for the application. Performance analysis studies are conducted to evaluate existing or planned systems. Web applications are used by hundreds of thousands of users simultaneously, which sometimes increases the risk of server failure in real time operations. We use Coloured Petri Net (CPN), a very powerful tool for modelling dynamic behaviour of a web application system. CPNs extend the vocabulary of ordinary Petri nets and add features that make them suitable for modelling large systems. The major focus of this work is on server side of web applications. The presented work focuses on modelling restructuring aspects, with major focus on concurrency and architecture, using CPN. It also focuses on bringing out the appropriate architecture for web and database servers given the number of concurrent users.
Abstract: This paper treats a design of combined control of a
single phase power factor correction (PFC). The strategy of the
proposed control is based on two parts, the first, for the outer loop
(DC output regulated voltage), and the second govern the input
current of the converter in order to achieve a sinusoidal form in phase
with the grid voltage. Two kinds of regulators are used, Fuzzy
controller for the outer loop and predictive controller for the inner
loop. The controllers are verified and discussed through simulation
under MATLAB/Simulink platform. Also an experimental
confirmation is applied. Results present a high dynamic performance
under various parameters changes.
Abstract: The aim of present research was to study of the
relationship between emotional intelligence, perceived stress, positive
religious coping with psychological distress to in a sample of
undergraduate students in Polytechnic University in Kabul. One
hundred and fifty-tow students (102 male, 50 female) were included
in this study. All participants completed the Emotional Intelligence
Scale (EIS), General Health Questionnaire (GHQ 12), Perceived
Stress Scale (PSS-10), and the Brief RCOPE. The results revealed
that EI was negatively associated with perceived stress and
psychological distress. Also emotional intelligence was positively
correlated with positive religious coping. Perceived stress was
positive related with psychological distress and negatively correlated
with positive religious coping. Eventually positive religious coping
was significantly and negatively correlated with psychological
distress. However, emotional intelligence and positive religious
coping could influence on mental health.
Abstract: We present a family of data-reusing and affine
projection algorithms. For identification of a noisy linear finite
impulse response channel, a partial knowledge of a channel,
especially noise, can be used to improve the performance of
the adaptive filter. Motivated by this fact, the proposed scheme
incorporates an estimate of a knowledge of noise. A constraint, called
the adaptive noise constraint, estimates an unknown information of
noise. By imposing this constraint on a cost function of data-reusing
and affine projection algorithms, a cost function based on the adaptive
noise constraint and Lagrange multiplier is defined. Minimizing the
new cost function leads to the adaptive noise constrained (ANC)
data-reusing and affine projection algorithms. Experimental results
comparing the proposed schemes to standard data-reusing and affine
projection algorithms clearly indicate their superior performance.
Abstract: Location selection presents a crucial decision problem in today’s business world where strategic decision making processes have critical importance. Thus, location selection has strategic importance for companies in boosting their strength regarding competition, increasing corporate performances and efficiency in addition to lowering production and transportation costs. A right choice in location selection has a direct impact on companies’ commercial success. In this study, a store location selection problem of Carglass Turkey which operates in vehicle glass branch is handled. As this problem includes both tangible and intangible criteria, Analytic Network Process (ANP) was accepted as the main methodology. The model consists of control hierarchy and BOCR subnetworks which include clusters of actors, alternatives and criteria. In accordance with the management’s choices, five different locations were selected. In addition to the literature review, a strict cooperation with the actor group was ensured and maintained while determining the criteria and during whole process. Obtained results were presented to the management as a report and its feasibility was confirmed accordingly.
Abstract: This article presents an interactive system for data acquisition in vehicle testing according to the test process defined in automotive directive 2004/104/EC. The project has been designed and developed by authors for the Spanish company Applus-LGAI. The developed project will result in a new process, which will involve the creation of braking cycle test defined in the aforementioned automotive directive. It will also allow the analysis of new vehicle features that was not feasible, allowing an increasing interaction with the vehicle. Potential users of this system in the short term will be vehicle manufacturers and in a medium term the system can be extended to testing other automotive components and EMC tests.
Abstract: Recycling, as part of any sustainable environment, is continuously evolving and impacting on new materials in manufacturing. One example of this is the recycled solid waste of Tetra Pak ™ packaging, which is a highly pollutant waste as it is not biodegradable since it is manufactured with different materials. The Tetra Pak ™ container consists of thermally joined layers of paper, aluminum and polyethylene. Once disposed, this packaging is recycled by completely separating the paperboard from the rest of the materials. The aluminum and the polyethylene remain together and are used to create the poly-aluminum, which is widely used to manufacture roof tiles. These recycled tiles have different thermal and acoustic properties compared with traditional manufactured ceramic and cement tiles. In this work, we compare a group of tiles using nondestructive optical testing to measure the superficial micro deformations of the tiles under well controlled experiments. The results of the acoustic and thermal tests show remarkable differences between the recycled tile and the traditional ones. These results help to determine which tile could be better suited to the specific environmental conditions in countries where extreme climates, ranging from tropical, desert-like, to very cold are experienced throughout the year.
Abstract: The material behavior of graphene, a single layer of
carbon lattice, is extremely sensitive to its dielectric environment. We
demonstrate improvement in electronic performance of graphene
nanowire interconnects with full encapsulation by lattice-matching,
chemically inert, 2D layered insulator hexagonal boron nitride (h-
BN). A novel layer-based transfer technique is developed to construct
the h-BN/MLG/h-BN heterostructures. The encapsulated graphene
wires are characterized and compared with that on SiO2 or h-BN
substrate without passivating h-BN layer. Significant improvements
in maximum current-carrying density, breakdown threshold, and
power density in encapsulated graphene wires are observed. These
critical improvements are achieved without compromising the carrier
transport characteristics in graphene. Furthermore, graphene wires
exhibit electrical behavior less insensitive to ambient conditions, as
compared with the non-passivated ones. Overall, h-BN/graphene/h-
BN heterostructure presents a robust material platform towards the
implementation of high-speed carbon-based interconnects.
Abstract: Due to the increasing growth of internet users, the emerging applications of multicast are growing day by day and there is a requisite for the design of high-speed switches/routers. Huge amounts of effort have been done into the research area of multicast switch fabric design and algorithms. Different traffic scenarios are the influencing factor which affect the throughput and delay of the switch. The pointer based multicast scheduling algorithms are not performed well under non-uniform traffic conditions. In this work, performance of the switch has been analyzed by applying the advanced multicast scheduling algorithm OQSMS (Optimal Queue Selection Based Multicast Scheduling Algorithm), MDDR (Multicast Due Date Round-Robin Scheduling Algorithm) and MDRR (Multicast Dual Round-Robin Scheduling Algorithm). The results show that OQSMS achieves better switching performance than other algorithms under the uniform, non-uniform and bursty traffic conditions and it estimates optimal queue in each time slot so that it achieves maximum possible throughput.
Abstract: This study investigates the relationship between external debt and military spending in case of India over the period of 1970–2012. In doing so, we have applied the structural break unit root tests to examine stationarity properties of the variables. The Auto-Regressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) bounds testing approach is used to test whether cointegration exists in presence of structural breaks stemming in the series. Our results indicate the cointegration among external debt, military spending, debt servicing, and economic growth. Moreover, military spending and debt servicing add in external debt. Economic growth helps in lowering external debt. The Vector Error Correction Model (VECM) analysis and Granger causality test reveal that military spending and economic growth cause external debt. The feedback effect also exists between external debt and debt servicing in case of India.
Abstract: Parallel hybrid storage systems consist of a hierarchy of different storage devices that vary in terms of data reading speed performance. As we ascend in the hierarchy, data reading speed becomes faster. Thus, migrating the application’ important data that will be accessed in the near future to the uppermost level will reduce the application I/O waiting time; hence, reducing its execution elapsed time. In this research, we implement trace-driven two-levels parallel hybrid storage system prototype that consists of HDDs and SSDs. The prototype uses data mining techniques to classify application’ data in order to determine its near future data accesses in parallel with the its on-demand request. The important data (i.e. the data that the application will access in the near future) are continuously migrated to the uppermost level of the hierarchy. Our simulation results show that our data migration approach integrated with data mining techniques reduces the application execution elapsed time when using variety of traces in at least to 22%.
Abstract: Cytotoxic platinum compounds play a major role in the chemotherapy of a large number of human cancers. However, due to the severe side effects for the patient and other problems associated with their use, there is a need for the development of more efficient drugs and new methods for their selective delivery to the tumours. One way to achieve the latter could be in the use of nanoparticular substrates that can adsorb or chemically bind the drug. In the cell, the drug is supposed to be slowly released, either by physical desorption or by dissolution of the particle framework. Ideally, the cytotoxic properties of the platinum drug unfold only then, in the cancer cell and over a longer period of time due to the gradual release. In this paper, we report on our first steps in this direction. The binding properties of a series of cytotoxic Pt(II) oxadiazoline compounds to mesoporous silica particles has been studied by NMR and UV/vis spectroscopy. High loadings were achieved when the Pt(II) compound was relatively polar, and has been dissolved in a relatively nonpolar solvent before the silica was added. Typically, 6-10 hours were required for complete equilibration, suggesting the adsorption did not only occur to the outer surface but also to the interior of the pores. The untreated and Pt(II) loaded particles were characterised by C, H, N combustion analysis, BET/BJH nitrogen sorption, electron microscopy (REM and TEM) and EDX. With the latter methods we were able to demonstrate the homogenous distribution of the Pt(II) compound on and in the silica particles, and no Pt(II) bulk precipitate had formed. The in vitro cytotoxicity in a human cancer cell line (HeLa) has been determined for one of the new platinum compounds adsorbed to mesoporous silica particles of different size, and compared with the corresponding compound in solution. The IC50 data are similar in all cases, suggesting that the release of the Pt(II) compound was relatively fast and possibly occurred before the particles reached the cells. Overall, the platinum drug is chemically stable on silica and retained its activity upon prolonged storage.
