Abstract: The aim of this study is to identify the suitability of
Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) in welding simulator
application towards Computer-Based Training (CBT) in developing
skills upon new students at the Advanced Technology Training
Center (ADTEC) Batu Pahat, Johor, Malaysia and GIATMARA,
Batu Pahat, Johor, Malaysia. The significance of the study is to create
a computer-based skills development approach in welding technology
among new students in ADTEC and GIATMARA as well as to
cultivate the elements of general skills among them. This study is
also important in elevating the number of individual knowledge
workers (K-workers) working in manufacturing industry in order to
achieve a national vision which is to be an industrial nation in the
year of 2020. The design of the study is a survey type of research
which using questionnaires as the instruments and some 136 students
from ADTEC and GIATMARA were interviewed. Descriptive
analysis is used to identify the frequency and mean values. The
findings of the study show that the welding technology has developed
skills in the students because of the application of VLE simulated at a
high level and the respondents agreed that the skills could be
embedded through the application of the VLE simulator. In summary,
the VLE simulator is suitable in welding skills development training
in terms of exposing new students with the relevant characteristics of
welding skills and at the same time spurring the students’ interest
towards learning more about the skills.
Abstract: Electrohydraulic servo system have been used in
industry in a wide number of applications. Its dynamics are highly
nonlinear and also have large extent of model uncertainties and
external disturbances. In this paper, a robust back-stepping control
(RBSC) scheme is proposed to overcome the problem of disturbances
and system uncertainties effectively and to improve the tracking
performance of EHS systems. In order to implement the proposed
control scheme, the system uncertainties in EHS systems are
considered as total leakage coefficient and effective oil volume. In
addition, in order to obtain the virtual controls for stabilizing system,
the update rule for the system uncertainty term is induced by
the Lyapunov control function (LCF). To verify the performance and
robustness of the proposed control system, computer simulation of
the proposed control system using Matlab/Simulink Software
is executed. From the computer simulation, it was found that the
RBSC system produces the desired tracking performance and has
robustness to the disturbances and system uncertainties of EHS
systems.
Abstract: In this article, a method is presented to effectively
estimate the deformed shape of a thick plate due to line heating. The
method uses a fifth order spline interpolation, with up to C3
continuity at specific points to compute the shape of the deformed
geometry. First and second order derivatives over a surface are the
resulting parameters of a given heating line on a plate. These
parameters are determined through experiments and/or finite element
simulations. Very accurate kriging models are fitted to real or virtual
surfaces to build-up a database of maps. Maps of first and second
order derivatives are then applied on numerical plate models to
evaluate their evolving shapes through a sequence of heating lines.
Adding an optimization process to this approach would allow
determining the trajectories of heating lines needed to shape complex
geometries, such as Francis turbine blades.
Abstract: In order to achieve high data rate and increase the
spectral efficiency, multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system has
been proposed. However, multiple antennas are limited by size and
cost. Therefore, recently developed cooperative diversity scheme,
which profits the transmit diversity only with the existing hardware by
constituting a virtual antenna array, can be a solution. However, most
of the introduced cooperative techniques have a common fault of
decreased transmission rate because the destination should receive the
decodable compositions of symbols from the source and the relay. In
this paper, we propose a cooperative cyclic delay diversity (CDD)
scheme that use hierarchical modulation. This scheme is free from the
rate loss and allows seamless cooperative communication.
Abstract: Nowadays, several research studies point up that an
active lifestyle is essential for physical and mental health benefits.
Mobile phones have greatly influenced people’s habits and attitudes
also in the way they exercise. Our research work is mainly focused on
investigating how to exploit mobile technologies to favour people’s
exertion experience. To this end, we developed an exertion framework
users can exploit through a real world mobile application, called
EverywhereSport Run (EWRun), designed to act as a virtual personal
trainer to support runners during their trainings. In this work, inspired
by both previous findings in the field of interaction design for people
with visual impairments, feedback gathered from real users of our
framework, and positive results obtained from two experimentations,
we present some new interaction facilities we designed to enhance
the interaction experience during a training. The positive obtained
results helped us to derive some interaction design recommendations
we believe will be a valid support for designers of future mobile
systems conceived to be used in circumstances where there are limited
possibilities of interaction.
Abstract: Cloud computing has emerged as a promising
direction for cost efficient and reliable service delivery across data
communication networks. The dynamic location of service facilities
and the virtualization of hardware and software elements are stressing
the communication networks and protocols, especially when data
centres are interconnected through the internet. Although the
computing aspects of cloud technologies have been largely
investigated, lower attention has been devoted to the networking
services without involving IT operating overhead. Cloud computing
has enabled elastic and transparent access to infrastructure services
without involving IT operating overhead. Virtualization has been a
key enabler for cloud computing. While resource virtualization and
service abstraction have been widely investigated, networking in
cloud remains a difficult puzzle. Even though network has significant
role in facilitating hybrid cloud scenarios, it hasn't received much
attention in research community until recently. We propose Network
as a Service (NaaS), which forms the basis of unifying public and
private clouds. In this paper, we identify various challenges in
adoption of hybrid cloud. We discuss the design and implementation
of a cloud platform.
Abstract: In the field of fashion design, 3D Mannequin is a kind
of assisting tool which could rapidly realize the design concepts.
While the concept of 3D Mannequin is applied to the computer added
fashion design, it will connect with the development and the
application of design platform and system. Thus, the situation
mentioned above revealed a truth that it is very critical to develop a
module of 3D Mannequin which would correspond with the necessity
of fashion design. This research proposes a concrete plan that
developing and constructing a system of 3D Mannequin with Kinect.
In the content, ergonomic measurements of objective human features
could be attained real-time through the implement with depth camera
of Kinect, and then the mesh morphing can be implemented through
transformed the locations of the control-points on the model by
inputting those ergonomic data to get an exclusive 3D mannequin
model. In the proposed methodology, after the scanned points from the
Kinect are revised for accuracy and smoothening, a complete human
feature would be reconstructed by the ICP algorithm with the method
of image processing. Also, the objective human feature could be
recognized to analyze and get real measurements. Furthermore, the
data of ergonomic measurements could be applied to shape morphing
for the division of 3D Mannequin reconstructed by feature curves. Due
to a standardized and customer-oriented 3D Mannequin would be
generated by the implement of subdivision, the research could be
applied to the fashion design or the presentation and display of 3D
virtual clothes. In order to examine the practicality of research
structure, a system of 3D Mannequin would be constructed with JAVA
program in this study. Through the revision of experiments the
practicability-contained research result would come out.
Abstract: In this work, the Ictalurus punctatus species estimated
available physical habitat is compared with the estimated physical
habitat for the same but modified river reach, with the aim of creating
a linear park, along a length of 5 500 m.
To determine the effect of ecological park construction, on
physical habitat of the Lerma river stretch of study, first, the available
habitat for the Ictalurus punctatus species was estimated through the
simulation of the physical habitat, by using surveying, hydraulics,
and habitat information gotten at the river reach in its actual situation.
Second, it was estimated the available habitat for the above species,
upon the simulation of the physical habitat through the proposed
modification for the ecological park creation. Third, it is presented a
comparison between both scenarios in terms of available habitat
estimated for Ictalurus punctatus species, concluding that in cases of
adult and spawning life stages, changes in the channel to create an
ecological park would produce a considerable loss of potentially
usable habitat (PUH), while in the case of the juvenile life stage PUH
remains virtually unchanged, and in the case of life stage fry the PUH
would increase due to the presence of velocities and depths of lesser
magnitude, due to the presence of minor flow rates and lower volume
of the wet channel.
It is expected that habitat modification for linear park construction
may produce the lack of Ictalurus punktatus species conservation at
the river reach of the study.
Abstract: The main function of Medium Access Control (MAC) is to share the channel efficiently between all nodes. In the real-time scenario, there will be certain amount of wastage in bandwidth due to back-off periods. More bandwidth will be wasted in idle state if the back-off period is very high and collision may occur if the back-off period is small. So, an optimization is needed for this problem. The main objective of the work is to reduce delay due to back-off period thereby reducing collision and increasing throughput. Here a method, called the virtual back-off algorithm (VBA) is used to optimize the back-off period and thereby it increases throughput and reduces collisions. The main idea is to optimize the number of transmission for every node. A counter is introduced at each node to implement this idea. Here counter value represents the sequence number. VBA is classified into two types VBA with counter sharing (VBA-CS) and VBA with no counter sharing (VBA-NCS). These two classifications of VBA are compared for various parameters. Simulation is done in NS-2 environment. The results obtained are found to be promising.

Abstract: Distributed applications deployed on LEO satellites
and ground stations require substantial communication between
different members in a constellation to overcome the earth
coverage barriers imposed by GEOs. Applications running on LEO
constellations suffer the earth line-of-sight blockage effect. They
need adequate lab testing before launching to space. We propose
a scalable cloud-based network simulation framework to simulate
problems created by the earth line-of-sight blockage. The framework
utilized cloud IaaS virtual machines to simulate LEO satellites
and ground stations distributed software. A factorial ANOVA
statistical analysis is conducted to measure simulator overhead on
overall communication performance. The results showed a very low
simulator communication overhead. Consequently, the simulation
framework is proposed as a candidate for testing LEO constellations
with distributed software in the lab before space launch.
Abstract: The article proposed intends to analyze the possibility
(and conditions) of a media regulation law in a democratic rule of law
in the twenty-first century. To do so, will be presented initially the
idea of the public sphere (by Jürgen Habermas), showing how it is
presented as an interface between the citizen and the state (or the
private and public) and how important is it in a deliberative
democracy. Based on this paradigm, the traditional perception of the
role of public information (such as system functional element) and on
the possibility of media regulation will be exposed, due to the public
nature of their activity. A critical argument will then be displayed
from two different perspectives: a) the formal function of the current
media information, considering that the digital age has fragmented
the information access; b) the concept of a constructive democracy,
which reduces the need for representation, changing the strategic
importance of the public sphere. The question to be addressed (based
on the comparative law) is if the regulation is justified in a
polycentric democracy, especially when it operates under the digital
age (with immediate and virtual communication). The proposal is to
be presented in the sense that even in a twenty-first century the media
in a democratic rule of law still has an extremely important role and
may be subject to regulation, but this should be on terms very
different (and narrower) from those usually defended.
Abstract: Non-crimp 3D orthogonal fabric composite is one of
the textile-based composite materials that are rapidly developing
light-weight engineering materials. The present paper focuses on
geometric and micromechanical modeling of non-crimp 3D
orthogonal carbon fabric and composites reinforced with it for
aerospace applications. In this research meso-finite element (FE)
modeling employs for stress analysis in different load conditions.
Since mechanical testing of expensive textile carbon composites with
specific application isn't affordable, simulation composite in a virtual
environment is a helpful way to investigate its mechanical properties
in different conditions.
Abstract: This paper shows in detail the mathematical model of
direct and inverse kinematics for a robot manipulator (welding type)
with four degrees of freedom. Using the D-H parameters, screw
theory, numerical, geometric and interpolation methods, the
theoretical and practical values of the position of robot were
determined using an optimized algorithm for inverse kinematics
obtaining the values of the particular joints in order to determine the
virtual paths in a relatively short time.
Abstract: Proposed paper dealt with the modelling and analysis of induction motor based on the mathematical expression using the graphical programming environment of Laboratory Virtual Instrument Engineering Workbench (LabVIEW). Induction motor modelling with the mathematical expression enables the motor to be simulated with the various required parameters. Owing to the invention of variable speed drives study about the induction motor characteristics became complex. In this simulation motor internal parameter such as stator resistance and reactance, rotor resistance and reactance, phase voltage, frequency and losses will be given as input. By varying the speed of motor corresponding parameters can be obtained they are input power, output power, efficiency, torque induced, slip and current.
Abstract: Typically, virtual communities exhibit the well-known
phenomenon of participation inequality, which means that only a
small percentage of users is responsible of the majority of
contributions. However, the sustainability of the community requires
that the group of active users must be continuously nurtured with new
users that gain expertise through a participation process. This paper
analyzes the time evolution of Open Source Software (OSS)
communities, considering users that join/abandon the community
over time and several topological properties of the network when
modeled as a social network. More specifically, the paper analyzes
the role of those users rejoining the community and their influence in
the global characteristics of the network.
Abstract: Applications of the Hausdorff space and its mappings
into tangent spaces are outlined, including their fractal dimensions
and self-similarities. The paper details this theory set up and further
describes virtualizations and atomization of manufacturing processes.
It demonstrates novel concurrency principles that will guide
manufacturing processes and resources configurations. Moreover,
varying levels of details may be produced by up folding and breaking
down of newly introduced generic models. This choice of layered
generic models for units and systems aspects along specific aspects
allows research work in parallel to other disciplines with the same
focus on all levels of detail. More credit and easier access are granted
to outside disciplines for enriching manufacturing grounds. Specific
mappings and the layers give hints for chances for interdisciplinary
outcomes and may highlight more details for interoperability
standards, as already worked on the international level. The new rules
are described, which require additional properties concerning all
involved entities for defining distributed decision cycles, again on the
base of self-similarity. All properties are further detailed and assigned
to a maturity scale, eventually displaying the smartness maturity of a
total shopfloor or a factory. The paper contributes to the intensive
ongoing discussion in the field of intelligent distributed
manufacturing and promotes solid concepts for implementations of
Cyber Physical Systems and the Internet of Things into
manufacturing industry, like industry 4.0, as discussed in German-speaking
countries.
Abstract: The explosion of the World Wide Web and the
electronic trend of university teaching have transformed the learning
style to become more learner-centered, which has popularized the
digital delivery of mediated lectures as an alternative or an adjunct to
traditional lectures. Despite its potential and popularity, virtual
lectures have not been adopted yet in Jordanian universities. This
research aimed to fill this gap by studying the factors that influence
students’ willingness to accept virtual lectures in one Jordanian
University. A quantitative approach was followed, by obtaining 216
survey responses and statistically applying the UTAUT model with
some modifications. Results revealed that performance expectancy,
effort expectancy, social influences, and self-efficacy could
significantly influence students’ attitudes towards virtual lectures.
Additionally, Facilitating conditions and attitudes towards virtual
lectures were found with significant influence on students’ intention
to take virtual lectures. Research implications and future work were
specified afterwards.
Abstract: In this paper, we propose an automatic verification
technology of software patches for user virtual environments on IaaS
Cloud to decrease verification costs of patches. In these days, IaaS
services have been spread and many users can customize virtual
machines on IaaS Cloud like their own private servers. Regarding to
software patches of OS or middleware installed on virtual machines,
users need to adopt and verify these patches by themselves. This task
increases operation costs of users. Our proposed method replicates
user virtual environments, extracts verification test cases for user
virtual environments from test case DB, distributes patches to virtual
machines on replicated environments and conducts those test cases
automatically on replicated environments. We have implemented the
proposed method on OpenStack using Jenkins and confirmed the
feasibility. Using the implementation, we confirmed the effectiveness
of test case creation efforts by our proposed idea of 2-tier abstraction
of software functions and test cases. We also evaluated the automatic
verification performance of environment replications, test cases
extractions and test cases conductions.
Abstract: Human motion capture has become one of the major
area of interest in the field of computer vision. Some of the major
application areas that have been rapidly evolving include the
advanced human interfaces, virtual reality and security/surveillance
systems. This study provides a brief overview of the techniques and
applications used for the markerless human motion capture, which
deals with analyzing the human motion in the form of mathematical
formulations. The major contribution of this research is that it
classifies the computer vision based techniques of human motion
capture based on the taxonomy, and then breaks its down into four
systematically different categories of tracking, initialization, pose
estimation and recognition. The detailed descriptions and the
relationships descriptions are given for the techniques of tracking and
pose estimation. The subcategories of each process are further
described. Various hypotheses have been used by the researchers in
this domain are surveyed and the evolution of these techniques have
been explained. It has been concluded in the survey that most
researchers have focused on using the mathematical body models for
the markerless motion capture.
