Abstract: Vortex-shedding phenomenon of the flow
around combined two bodies having various geometries and sizes has been investigated experimentally in the Reynolds
number range between 4.1x103 and 1.75x104. To see the effect
of the rotation of the bodies on the vortex shedding, the
combined bodies were rotated from 0° to 180°. The combined models have a cross section composing of a main circular cylinder and an attached circular or square cylinder. Results
have shown that Strouhal numbers for two cases were
changed considerably with the angle of incidence, while it was found to be largely independent of Reynolds number at 150. Characteristics of the vortex formation region and
location of flow attachments, reattachments, and separations
were observed by means of the flow visualizations.
Depending on the inclination angle the effects of flow
attachment, separation and reattachment on vortex-shedding phenomenon have been discussed.
Abstract: Particulate matter (PM) in ambient air is responsible
for adverse health effects in adults and children. Relatively little is
known about the concentrations, sources and health effects of PM in
indoor air. A monitoring study was conducted in Ankara by three
campaigns in order to measure PM levels in indoor and outdoor
environments to identify and quantify associations between sources
and concentrations. Approximately 82 homes (1st campaign for 42,
2nd campaign for 12, and 3rd campaign for 28), three rooms (living
room, baby-s room and living room used as a baby-s room) and
outdoor ambient at each home were sampled with Grimm
Environmental Dust Monitoring (EDM) 107, during different
seasonal periods of 2011 and 2012. In this study, the relationship
between indoor and outdoor PM levels for particulate matter less than
10 micrometer (.m) (PM10), particulate matter less than 2.5.m
(PM2.5) and particulate matter less than 1.0.m (PM1) were
investigated. The mean concentration of PM10, PM2.5, and PM1.0 at
living room used as baby-s room is higher than living and baby-s
room (or bedroom) for three sampling campaigns. It is concluded that
the household activities and environmental conditions are very
important for PM concentrations in the indoor environments during
the sampling periods. The amount of smokers, being near a main
street and/or construction activities increased the PM concentration.
This study is based on the assessment the relationship between indoor
and outdoor PM levels and the household activities and
environmental conditions
Abstract: In construction of any structure, the aesthetic and utility values should be considered in such a way as to make the structure cost-effective. Most structures are composed of elements and joints which are very critical in any skeletal space structure because they majorly determine the performance of the structure. In early times, most space structures were constructed using rigid joints which had the advantage of better performing structures as compared to pin-jointed structures but with the disadvantage of requiring all the construction work to be done on site. The discovery of semi-rigid joints now enables connections to be prefabricated and quickly assembled on site while maintaining good performance. In this paper, cost-effective is discussed basing on strength of connectors at the joints, buckling of joints and overall structure, and the effect of initial geometrical imperfections. Several existing joints are reviewed by classifying them into categories and discussing where they are most suited and how they perform structurally. Also, finite element modeling using ABAQUS is done to determine the buckling behavior. It is observed that some joints are more economical than others. The rise to span ratio and imperfections are also found to affect the buckling of the structures. Based on these, general principles that guide the design of cost-effective joints and structures are discussed.
Abstract: This paper presents the use of a semi-classical signal
analysis method that has been developed recently for the analysis of
turbomachinery flow unsteadiness. We will focus on the correlation
between theSemi-Classical Signal Analysis parameters and some
physical parameters in relation with turbomachinery features. To
demonstrate the potential of the proposed approach, a static pressure
signal issued from a rotor/stator interaction of a centrifugal pump is
studied. Several configurations of the pump are compared.
Abstract: The current study has investigated the ageing
phenomena of silica optical fibres in relation to water activity which might be accelerated when exposed to a supplementary energy, such as microwaves. A controlled stress by winding fibres onto accurate
diameter mandrel was applied. Taking into account that normally a
decrease in fibre strength is induced in time by chemical action of water, the effects of cumulative reagents such as: water, applied stress and supplementary energy (microwave) in some cases acted in
the opposite manner. The microwave effect as a structural relaxation
catalyst appears unexpected, even if the overall gain in fibre strength is not high, but the stress corrosion factor revealed significant
increase in certain simulation conditions.
Abstract: A greenhouse experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of different types of nutrients induced salinity on the growth, membrane permeability, nitrate reductase activity, proline content and macronutrient concentrations of tomato plants. The plants were subjected to six different treatments: 1 (control) containing basic solution, 2 basic solution+40mM of NaCl, 3 basic solution+40 mM of KNO3, 4 basic solution+20 mM of Ca(NO3)2.4H2O, 5 basic solution+20 mM of Mg(NO3)2.6H2O and 6 basic solution+20 mM of KNO3+5 mM of Ca(NO3)2.4H2O+5 mM of Mg(NO3)2.6H2O. Membrane permeability was increased significantly only with addition of NaCl, and then decreased to its lower level with addition of Ca(NO3)2.4H2O and Mg(NO3)2.6H2O. Proline accumulation were followed the same trend of results when they had been exposed to NaCl salinity. Nitrate reductase activity (NRA) was significantly affected by addition of different types of nutrient induced salinity.
Abstract: Evolvable hardware (EHW) is a developing field that
applies evolutionary algorithm (EA) to automatically design circuits,
antennas, robot controllers etc. A lot of research has been done in this
area and several different EAs have been introduced to tackle
numerous problems, as scalability, evolvability etc. However every
time a specific EA is chosen for solving a particular task, all its
components, such as population size, initialization, selection
mechanism, mutation rate, and genetic operators, should be selected
in order to achieve the best results. In the last three decade the
selection of the right parameters for the EA-s components for solving
different “test-problems" has been investigated. In this paper the
behaviour of mutation rate for designing logic circuits, which has not
been done before, has been deeply analyzed. The mutation rate for an
EHW system modifies the number of inputs of each logic gates, the
functionality (for example from AND to NOR) and the connectivity
between logic gates. The behaviour of the mutation has been
analyzed based on the number of generations, genotype redundancy
and number of logic gates for the evolved circuits. The experimental
results found provide the behaviour of the mutation rate during
evolution for the design and optimization of simple logic circuits.
The experimental results propose the best mutation rate to be used for
designing combinational logic circuits. The research presented is
particular important for those who would like to implement a
dynamic mutation rate inside the evolutionary algorithm for evolving
digital circuits. The researches on the mutation rate during the last 40
years are also summarized.
Abstract: An efficient transient flow simulation for gas
pipelines and networks is presented. The proposed transient flow
simulation is based on the transfer function models and MATLABSimulink.
The equivalent transfer functions of the nonlinear
governing equations are derived for different types of the boundary
conditions. Next, a MATLAB-Simulink library is developed and
proposed considering any boundary condition type. To verify the
accuracy and the computational efficiency of the proposed
simulation, the results obtained are compared with those of the
conventional finite difference schemes (such as TVD, method of
lines, and other finite difference implicit and explicit schemes). The
effects of the flow inertia and the pipeline inclination are
incorporated in this simulation. It is shown that the proposed
simulation has a sufficient accuracy and it is computationally more
efficient than the other methods.
Abstract: Monitoring of microbial flora in aquacultured sea bream, in relation to the physicochemical parameters of the rearing seawater, ended to a model describing the influence of the last to the quality of the fisheries. Fishes were sampled during eight months from four aqua farms in Western Greece and analyzed for psychrotrophic, H2S producing bacteria, Salmonella sp., heterotrophic plate count (PCA), with simultaneous physical evaluation. Temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity, TDS, salinity, NO3 - and NH4 + ions were recorded. Temperature, dissolved oxygen and conductivity were correlated, respectively, to PCA, Pseudomonas sp. and Shewanella sp. counts. These parameters were the inputs of the model, which was driving, as outputs, to the prediction of PCA, Vibrio sp., Pseudomonas sp. and Shewanella sp. counts, and fish microbiological quality. The present study provides, for the first time, a ready-to-use predictive model of fisheries hygiene, leading to an effective management system for the optimization of aquaculture fisheries quality.
Abstract: Fault-proneness of a software module is the
probability that the module contains faults. To predict faultproneness
of modules different techniques have been proposed which
includes statistical methods, machine learning techniques, neural
network techniques and clustering techniques. The aim of proposed
study is to explore whether metrics available in the early lifecycle
(i.e. requirement metrics), metrics available in the late lifecycle (i.e.
code metrics) and metrics available in the early lifecycle (i.e.
requirement metrics) combined with metrics available in the late
lifecycle (i.e. code metrics) can be used to identify fault prone
modules using Genetic Algorithm technique. This approach has been
tested with real time defect C Programming language datasets of
NASA software projects. The results show that the fusion of
requirement and code metric is the best prediction model for
detecting the faults as compared with commonly used code based
model.
Abstract: A reliable estimate of the average bond stress within
the anchorage of steel reinforcing bars in tension is critically
important for the design of reinforced concrete member. This paper
describes part of a recently completed experimental research program
in the Centre for Infrastructure Engineering and Safety (CIES) at the
University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia aimed at
assessing the effects of different factors on the anchorage
requirements of modern high strength steel reinforcing bars. The
study found that an increase in the anchorage length and bar diameter
generally leads to a reduction of the average ultimate bond stress. By
the extension of a well established analytical model of bond and
anchorage, it is shown here that the differences in the average
ultimate bond stress for different anchorage lengths is associated with
the variable degree of plastic deformation in the tensile zone of the
concrete surrounding the bar.
Abstract: Disposal of health-care waste (HCW) is considered as
an important environmental problem especially in large cities.
Multiple criteria decision making (MCDM) techniques are apt to deal
with quantitative and qualitative considerations of the health-care
waste management (HCWM) problems. This research proposes a
fuzzy multi-criteria group decision making approach with a multilevel
hierarchical structure including qualitative as well as
quantitative performance attributes for evaluating HCW disposal
alternatives for Istanbul. Using the entropy weighting method,
objective weights as well as subjective weights are taken into account
to determine the importance weighting of quantitative performance
attributes. The results obtained using the proposed methodology are
thoroughly analyzed.
Abstract: The main objective of this article is to present the semi-active vibration control using an electro-rheological fluid embedded sandwich structure for a cantilever beam. ER fluid is a smart material, which cause the suspended particles polarize and connect each other to form chain. The stiffness and damping coefficients of the ER fluid can be changed in 10 micro seconds; therefore, ERF is suitable to become the material embedded in the tunable vibration absorber to become a smart absorber. For the ERF smart material embedded structure, the fuzzy control law depends on the experimental expert database and the proposed self-tuning strategy. The electric field is controlled by a CRIO embedded system to implement the real application. This study investigates the different performances using the Type-1 fuzzy and interval Type-2 fuzzy controllers. The Interval type-2 fuzzy control is used to improve the modeling uncertainties for this ERF embedded shock absorber. The self-tuning vibration controllers using Type-1 and Interval Type-2 fuzzy law are implemented to the shock absorber system. Based on the resulting performance, Internal Type-2 fuzzy is better than the traditional Type-1 fuzzy control for this vibration control system.
Abstract: Global climate change has become the preeminent
threat to human security in the 21st century. From mitigation perspective, this study aims to evaluate the performance of biogas
renewable project under clean development mechanism activities
(namely Korat-Waste-to-Energy) in Thailand and to assess local perceptions towards the significance of climate change mitigation and
sustainability of such project in their community. Questionnaire was
developed based on the national sustainable development criteria and
was distributed among systematically selected households within
project boundaries (n=260). Majority of the respondents strongly agreed with the reduction of odor problems (81%) and air pollution
(76%). However, they were unsure about greenhouse gas reduction from such project and ignorant about the key issues of climate change. A lesson learned suggested that there is a need to further
investigate the possible socio-psychological barriers may significantly shape public perception and understandings of climate
change in the local context.
Abstract: Dynamic of phytoplankton blooms in the Baltic Sea
has been analyzed applying the numerical ecosystem model 3D
CEMBS. The model consists of the hydrodynamic model (POP,
version 2.1) and the ice model (CICE, version 4.0), which are
imposed by the atmospheric data model (DATM7). The 3D
model has an ecosystem module, activated in 2012 in the operational
mode. The ecosystem model consists of 11 main variables: biomass
of small-size phytoplankton and large-size phytoplankton
and cyanobacteria, zooplankton biomass, dissolved and molecular
detritus, dissolved oxygen concentration, as well as concentrations of
nutrients, including: nitrates, ammonia, phosphates and silicates. The
3D-CEMBS model is an effective tool for solving problems related to
phytoplankton blooms dynamic in the Baltic Sea
Abstract: Despite the availability of natural disaster related time series data for last 110 years, there is no forecasting tool available to humanitarian relief organizations to determine forecasts for emergency logistics planning. This study develops a forecasting tool based on identifying probability distributions. The estimates of the parameters are used to calculate natural disaster forecasts. Further, the determination of aggregate forecasts leads to efficient pre-disaster planning. Based on the research findings, the relief agencies can optimize the various resources allocation in emergency logistics planning.
Abstract: Since 1992, year where Hugo de Garis has published
the first paper on Evolvable Hardware (EHW), a period of intense
creativity has followed. It has been actively researched, developed
and applied to various problems. Different approaches have been
proposed that created three main classifications: extrinsic, mixtrinsic
and intrinsic EHW. Each of these solutions has a real interest.
Nevertheless, although the extrinsic evolution generates some
excellent results, the intrinsic systems are not so advanced. This
paper suggests 3 possible solutions to implement the run-time
configuration intrinsic EHW system: FPGA-based Run-Time
Configuration system, JBits-based Run-Time Configuration system
and Multi-board functional-level Run-Time Configuration system.
The main characteristic of the proposed architectures is that they are
implemented on Field Programmable Gate Array. A comparison of
proposed solutions demonstrates that multi-board functional-level
run-time configuration is superior in terms of scalability, flexibility
and the implementation easiness.
Abstract: In this paper, a fibre laser at 546 nm has been studied
for a signal power of -30 dB. Er3+-doped ZBLAN fibre has been used
by upconversion pumping of a 980 nm laser diode. Gain saturation
effect has been investigated in detail. Laser performance has also been
discussed. An efficiency of 35% has been calculated with a length of 5
mm fibre laser. Results show that Er3+-doped ZBLAN is a promising
candidate for optical amplification at 546 nm.

Abstract: The simulation of external aerodynamics is one of the most challenging and important automotive CFD applications. With the rapid developments of digital computers, CFD is used as a practical tool in modern fluid dynamics research. It integrates fluid mechanics disciplines, mathematics and computer science. In this study, two different types of simulations were made, one for the flow around a simplified high speed passenger car with a rear-spoiler and the other for the flow without a rear-spoiler. The standard k-ε model is selected to numerically simulate the external flow field of the simplified Camry model with or without a rear-spoiler. Through an analysis of the simulation results, a new rear spoiler is designed and it shows a mild reduction of the vehicle aerodynamics drag. This leads to less vehicle fuel consumption on the road.
