Abstract: The hillside building shows different behavior as a flat ground building in lateral loading. Especially the step back building in the sloping ground has different seismic behavior. The hillside building 3D model having different types of structural elements is introduced and analyzed with a seismic effect. The structural elements such as the shear wall, steel, and concrete bracing are used to resist the earthquake load and compared with without using any shear wall and bracing system. The X, inverted V, and diagonal bracing are used. The total nine models are prepared in ETABs finite element coding software. The linear dynamic analysis is the response spectrum analysis (RSA) carried out to study dynamic behaviors in means of top story displacement, story drift, fundamental time period, story stiffness, and story shear. The results are analyzed and made some decisions based on seismic performance. It is also observed that it is better to use the X bracing system for lateral load resisting elements.
Abstract: This work deals with the experimental study of the mechanical behavior, by shear tests (fracture shear), elements of concrete beams reinforced with fibers in chips. These fibers come from the machining waste of the steel parts. The shear tests are carried out on prismatic specimens of dimensions 10 x 20 x 120 cm3. The fibers are characterized by mechanical resistance and tearing. The optimal composition of the concrete was determined by the workability test. Two fiber contents are selected for this study (W = 0.6% and W = 0.8%) and a BT control concrete (W = 0%) of the same composition as the matrix is developed to serve as a reference with a sand-to-gravel ratio (S/G) of concrete matrix equal to 1. The comparison of the different results obtained shows that the chips fibers confer a significant ductility to the material after cracking of the concrete. Also, the fibers used limit diagonal cracks in shear and improve strength and rigidity.
Abstract: Dynamic properties of soil in small strains, especially for geotechnical engineers, are important for describing the behavior of soil and estimation of the earth structure deformations and structures, especially significant structures. This paper presents the effect of density on the shear modulus and damping ratio of saturated clean sand at various isotropic confining pressures. For this purpose, the specimens were compared with two different relative densities, loose Dr = 30% and dense Dr = 70%. Dynamic parameters were attained from a series of consolidated undrained fixed – free type torsional resonant column tests in small strain. Sand No. 161 is selected for this paper. The experiments show that by increasing sand density and confining pressure, the shear modulus increases and the damping ratio decreases.
Abstract: A method for determining the stress distribution of a rectangular plate subjected to two pairs of arbitrarily distributed in-plane edge shear loads is proposed, and the free vibration and buckling of such a rectangular plate are investigated in this work. The method utilizes two stress functions to synthesize the stress-resultant field of the plate with each of the stress functions satisfying the biharmonic compatibility equation. The sum of stress-resultant fields due to these two stress functions satisfies the boundary conditions at the edges of the plate, from which these two stress functions are determined. Then, the free vibration and buckling of the rectangular plate are investigated by the Galerkin method. Numerical results obtained by this work are compared with those appeared in the literature, and good agreements are observed.
Abstract: Jumbo container crane is an important part of port structures that needs to be designed properly, even when the port locates in low seismicity zone such as in Korea. In this paper, 30 artificial ground motions derived from the elastic response spectra of Korean Building Code (2005) are used for time history analysis. It is found that the uplift might not occur in this analysis when the crane locates in the low seismic zone. Therefore, a selection of a pinned or a gap element for base supporting has not much effect on the determination of the total base shear. The relationships between the total base shear and peak ground acceleration (PGA) and the relationships between the portal drift and the PGA are proposed in this study.
Abstract: The structures obtained with the use of sandwich
technologies combine low weight with high energy absorbing
capacity and load carrying capacity. Hence, there is a growing and
markedly interest in the use of sandwiches with aluminum foam core
because of very good properties such as flexural rigidity and energy
absorption capability. In the current investigation, the static threepoint
bending tests were carried out on the sandwiches with
aluminum foam core and glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP)
skins at different values of support span distances aiming the analyses
of their flexural performance. The influence of the core thickness and
the GFRP skin type was reported in terms of peak load and energy
absorption capacity. For this purpose, the skins with two different
types of fabrics which have same thickness value and the aluminum
foam core with two different thicknesses were bonded with a
commercial polyurethane based flexible adhesive in order to combine
the composite sandwich panels. The main results of the bending tests
are: force-displacement curves, peak force values, absorbed energy,
collapse mechanisms and the effect of the support span length and
core thickness. The results of the experimental study showed that the
sandwich with the skins made of S-Glass Woven fabrics and with the
thicker foam core presented higher mechanical values such as load
carrying and energy absorption capacities. The increment of the
support span distance generated the decrease of the mechanical
values for each type of panels, as expected, because of the inverse
proportion between the force and span length. The most common
failure types of the sandwiches are debonding of the lower skin and
the core shear. The obtained results have particular importance for
applications that require lightweight structures with a high capacity
of energy dissipation, such as the transport industry (automotive,
aerospace, shipbuilding and marine industry), where the problems of
collision and crash have increased in the last years.
Abstract: In this paper 3D FEM analysis was carried out on
double lap bonded joint with composite adherents subjected to
dynamic shear. The adherents are made of Carbon/Epoxy while the
adhesive is epoxy Araldite 2031. The maximum average shear stress
and the stress homogeneity in the adhesive layer were examined.
Three fibers textures were considered: UD; 2.5D and 3D with same
volume fiber then a parametric study based on changing the thickness
and the type of fibers texture in 2.5D was accomplished. Moreover,
adherents’ dissimilarity was also investigated. It was found that the
main parameter influencing the behavior is the longitudinal stiffness
of the adherents. An increase in the adherents’ longitudinal stiffness
induces an increase in the maximum average shear stress in the
adhesive layer and an improvement in the shear stress homogeneity
within the joint. No remarkable improvement was observed for
dissimilar adherents.
Abstract: Building code-related literature provides
recommendations on normalizing approaches to the calculation of
the dynamic properties of structures. Most building codes make a
distinction among types of structural systems, construction material,
and configuration through a numerical coefficient in the
expression for the fundamental period. The period is then used in
normalized response spectra to compute base shear. The typical
parameter used in simplified code formulas for the fundamental
period is overall building height raised to a power determined from
analytical and experimental results. However, reinforced concrete
buildings which constitute the majority of built space in less
developed countries pose additional challenges to the ones built with
homogeneous material such as steel, or with concrete under stricter
quality control. In the present paper, the particularities of reinforced
concrete buildings are explored and related to current methods of
equivalent static analysis. A comparative study is presented between
the Uniform Building Code, commonly used for buildings within
and outside the USA, and data from the Middle East used to model
151 reinforced concrete buildings of varying number of bays, number
of floors, overall building height, and individual story height. The
fundamental period was calculated using eigenvalue matrix
computation. The results were also used in a separate regression
analysis where the computed period serves as dependent variable,
while five building properties serve as independent variables. The
statistical analysis shed light on important parameters that simplified
code formulas need to account for including individual story height,
overall building height, floor plan, number of bays, and concrete
properties. Such inclusions are important for reinforced concrete
buildings of special conditions due to the level of concrete damage,
aging, or materials quality control during construction.
Overall results of the present analysis show that simplified code
formulas for fundamental period and base shear may be applied but
they require revisions to account for multiple parameters. The
conclusion above is confirmed by the analytical model where
fundamental periods were computed using numerical techniques and
eigenvalue solutions. This recommendation is particularly relevant
to code upgrades in less developed countries where it is customary to
adopt, and mildly adapt international codes.
We also note the necessity of further research using empirical data
from buildings in Lebanon that were subjected to severe damage due
to impulse loading or accelerated aging. However, we excluded this
study from the present paper and left it for future research as it has its
own peculiarities and requires a different type of analysis.
Abstract: Shear testing is one of the most complex testing areas where available methods and specimen geometries are different from each other. Therefore, a modified shear test specimen (MSTS) combining the simple uniaxial test with a zone of interest (ZOI) is tested which gives almost the pure shear. In this study, material parameters of polypropylene (PP) and high density polyethylene (HDPE) are first measured by tensile tests with a dogbone shaped specimen. These parameters are then used as an input for the finite element analysis. Secondly, a specially designed specimen (MSTS) is used to perform the shear stress tests in a tensile testing machine to get the results in terms of forces and extension, crack initiation etc. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) is also performed on the shear fracture surface to find material behavior. These experiments are then simulated by finite element method and compared with the experimental results in order to confirm the simulation model. Shear stress state is inspected to find the usability of the proposed shear specimen. Finally, a geometry correction factor can be established for these two materials in this specific loading and geometry with notch using Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics (LEFM). By these results, strain energy of shear failure and stress intensity factor (SIF) of shear of these two polymers are discussed in the special application of the screw cap opening of the medical or food packages with a temper evidence safety solution.
Abstract: In This paper, the behavior of eccentric braced frame
(EBF) is studied with replacing friction damper (FD) in confluence of these braces, in 5 and 10-storey steel frames. For FD system, the main step is to determine the slip load. For this reason, the performance indexes include roof displacement, base shear, dissipated energy and relative performance should be investigated. In
nonlinear dynamic analysis, the response of structure to three
earthquake records has been obtained and the values of roof
displacement, base shear and column axial force for FD and EBF
frames have been compared. The results demonstrate that use of the FD in frames, in comparison with the EBF, substantially reduces the roof displacement, column axial force and base shear. The obtained results show suitable performance of FD in higher storey structure in
comparison with the EBF.
Abstract: An experimental campaign of measurements for a
Darrieus vertical-axis wind turbine (VAWT) is presented for open
field conditions. The turbine is characterized by a twisted bladed
design, each blade being placed at a fixed distance from the rotational
shaft. The experimental setup to perform the acquisitions is described.
The results are lower than expected, due to the high influence of the
wind shear.
