Abstract: In order to define a new model of Tunisian foot
sizes and for building the most comfortable shoes, Tunisian
industrialists must be able to offer for their customers products able
to put on and adjust the majority of the target population concerned.
Moreover, the use of models of shoes, mainly from others
country, causes a mismatch between the foot and comfort of the
Tunisian shoes.
But every foot is unique; these models become uncomfortable for
the Tunisian foot. We have a set of measures produced from a
3D scan of the feet of a diverse population (women, men ...) and we
try to analyze this data to define a model of foot specific to the
Tunisian footwear design.
In this paper we propose tow new approaches to modeling a new
foot sizes model. We used, indeed, the neural networks, and specially
the Kohonen network.
Next, we combine neural networks with the concept of half-foot
size to improve the models already found. Finally, it was necessary to
compare the results obtained by applying each approach and we
decide what-s the best approach that give us the most model of foot
improving more comfortable shoes.
Abstract: In general the images used for compression are of
different types like dark image, high intensity image etc. When these
images are compressed using Counter Propagation Neural Network,
it takes longer time to converge. The reason for this is that the given
image may contain a number of distinct gray levels with narrow
difference with their neighborhood pixels. If the gray levels of the
pixels in an image and their neighbors are mapped in such a way that
the difference in the gray levels of the neighbor with the pixel is
minimum, then compression ratio as well as the convergence of the
network can be improved. To achieve this, a Cumulative Distribution
Function is estimated for the image and it is used to map the image
pixels. When the mapped image pixels are used the Counter
Propagation Neural Network yield high compression ratio as well as
it converges quickly.
Abstract: Modern manufacturing facilities are large scale,
highly complex, and operate with large number of variables under
closed loop control. Early and accurate fault detection and diagnosis
for these plants can minimise down time, increase the safety of plant
operations, and reduce manufacturing costs. Fault detection and
isolation is more complex particularly in the case of the faulty analog
control systems. Analog control systems are not equipped with
monitoring function where the process parameters are continually
visualised. In this situation, It is very difficult to find the relationship
between the fault importance and its consequences on the product
failure. We consider in this paper an approach to fault detection and
analysis of its effect on the production quality using an adaptive
centring and scaling in the pickling process in cold rolling. The fault
appeared on one of the power unit driving a rotary machine, this
machine can not track a reference speed given by another machine.
The length of metal loop is then in continuous oscillation, this affects
the product quality. Using a computerised data acquisition system,
the main machine parameters have been monitored. The fault has
been detected and isolated on basis of analysis of monitored data.
Normal and faulty situation have been obtained by an artificial neural
network (ANN) model which is implemented to simulate the normal
and faulty status of rotary machine. Correlation between the product
quality defined by an index and the residual is used to quality
classification.
Abstract: Monitoring lightning electromagnetic pulses (sferics) and other terrestrial as well as extraterrestrial transient radiation signals is of considerable interest for practical and theoretical purposes in astro- and geophysics as well as meteorology. Managing a continuous flow of data, automation of the analysis and classification process is important. Features based on a combination of wavelet and statistical methods proved efficient for this task and serve as input into a radial basis function network that is trained to discriminate transient shapes from pulse like to wave like. We concentrate on signals in the Very Low Frequency (VLF, 3 -30 kHz) range in this paper, but the developed methods are independent of this specific choice.
Abstract: A self-evolution algorithm for optimizing neural networks using a combination of PSO and JPSO is proposed. The algorithm optimizes both the network topology and parameters simultaneously with the aim of achieving desired accuracy with less complicated networks. The performance of the proposed approach is compared with conventional back-propagation networks using several synthetic functions, with better results in the case of the former. The proposed algorithm is also implemented on slope stability problem to estimate the critical factor of safety. Based on the results obtained, the proposed self evolving network produced a better estimate of critical safety factor in comparison to conventional BPN network.
Abstract: In contrast to existing methods which do not take into account multiconnectivity in a broad sense of this term, we develop mathematical models and highly effective combination (BIEM and FDM) numerical methods of calculation of stationary and quasi-stationary temperature field of a profile part of a blade with convective cooling (from the point of view of realization on PC). The theoretical substantiation of these methods is proved by appropriate theorems. For it, converging quadrature processes have been developed and the estimations of errors in the terms of A.Ziqmound continuity modules have been received. For visualization of profiles are used: the method of the least squares with automatic conjecture, device spline, smooth replenishment and neural nets. Boundary conditions of heat exchange are determined from the solution of the corresponding integral equations and empirical relationships. The reliability of designed methods is proved by calculation and experimental investigations heat and hydraulic characteristics of the gas turbine first stage nozzle blade.
Abstract: In this paper, low end Digital Signal Processors (DSPs)
are applied to accelerate integer neural networks. The use of DSPs
to accelerate neural networks has been a topic of study for some
time, and has demonstrated significant performance improvements.
Recently, work has been done on integer only neural networks, which
greatly reduces hardware requirements, and thus allows for cheaper
hardware implementation. DSPs with Arithmetic Logic Units (ALUs)
that support floating or fixed point arithmetic are generally more
expensive than their integer only counterparts due to increased circuit
complexity. However if the need for floating or fixed point math
operation can be removed, then simpler, lower cost DSPs can be
used. To achieve this, an integer only neural network is created in
this paper, which is then accelerated by using DSP instructions to
improve performance.
Abstract: Intelligent deep-drawing is an instrumental research field in sheet metal forming. A set of 28 different experimental data have been employed in this paper, investigating the roles of die radius, punch radius, friction coefficients and drawing ratios for axisymmetric workpieces deep drawing. This paper focuses an evolutionary neural network, specifically, error back propagation in collaboration with genetic algorithm. The neural network encompasses a number of different functional nodes defined through the established principles. The input parameters, i.e., punch radii, die radii, friction coefficients and drawing ratios are set to the network; thereafter, the material outputs at two critical points are accurately calculated. The output of the network is used to establish the best parameters leading to the most uniform thickness in the product via the genetic algorithm. This research achieved satisfactory results based on demonstration of neural networks.
Abstract: LABVIEW is a graphical programming language that has its roots in automation control and data acquisition. In this paper we have utilized this platform to provide a powerful toolset for process identification and control of nonlinear systems based on artificial neural networks (ANN). This tool has been applied to the monitoring and control of a lab-scale distillation column DELTALAB DC-SP. The proposed control scheme offers high speed of response for changes in set points and null stationary error for dual composition control and shows robustness in presence of externally imposed disturbance.
Abstract: As the enormous amount of on-line text grows on the
World-Wide Web, the development of methods for automatically
summarizing this text becomes more important. The primary goal of
this research is to create an efficient tool that is able to summarize
large documents automatically. We propose an Evolving
connectionist System that is adaptive, incremental learning and
knowledge representation system that evolves its structure and
functionality. In this paper, we propose a novel approach for Part of
Speech disambiguation using a recurrent neural network, a paradigm
capable of dealing with sequential data. We observed that
connectionist approach to text summarization has a natural way of
learning grammatical structures through experience. Experimental
results show that our approach achieves acceptable performance.
Abstract: The purpose of planned islanding is to construct a
power island during system disturbances which are commonly
formed for maintenance purpose. However, in most of the cases
island mode operation is not allowed. Therefore distributed
generators (DGs) must sense the unplanned disconnection from the
main grid. Passive technique is the most commonly used method for
this purpose. However, it needs improvement in order to identify the
islanding condition. In this paper an effective method for
identification of islanding condition based on phase space and neural
network techniques has been developed. The captured voltage
waveforms at the coupling points of DGs are processed to extract the
required features. For this purposed a method known as the phase
space techniques is used. Based on extracted features, two neural
network configuration namely radial basis function and probabilistic
neural networks are trained to recognize the waveform class.
According to the test result, the investigated technique can provide
satisfactory identification of the islanding condition in the
distribution system.
Abstract: The design of a complete expansion that allows for
compact representation of certain relevant classes of signals is a
central problem in signal processing applications. Achieving such a
representation means knowing the signal features for the purpose of
denoising, classification, interpolation and forecasting. Multilayer
Neural Networks are relatively a new class of techniques that are
mathematically proven to approximate any continuous function
arbitrarily well. Radial Basis Function Networks, which make use of
Gaussian activation function, are also shown to be a universal
approximator. In this age of ever-increasing digitization in the
storage, processing, analysis and communication of information,
there are numerous examples of applications where one needs to
construct a continuously defined function or numerical algorithm to
approximate, represent and reconstruct the given discrete data of a
signal. Many a times one wishes to manipulate the data in a way that
requires information not included explicitly in the data, which is
done through interpolation and/or extrapolation.
Tidal data are a very perfect example of time series and many
statistical techniques have been applied for tidal data analysis and
representation. ANN is recent addition to such techniques. In the
present paper we describe the time series representation capabilities
of a special type of ANN- Radial Basis Function networks and
present the results of tidal data representation using RBF. Tidal data
analysis & representation is one of the important requirements in
marine science for forecasting.
Abstract: In this paper, by employing a new Lyapunov functional
and an elementary inequality analysis technique, some sufficient
conditions are derived to ensure the existence and uniqueness of
periodic oscillatory solution for fuzzy bi-directional memory (BAM)
neural networks with time-varying delays, and all other solutions of
the fuzzy BAM neural networks converge the uniqueness periodic
solution. These criteria are presented in terms of system parameters
and have important leading significance in the design and applications
of neural networks. Moreover an example is given to illustrate the
effectiveness and feasible of results obtained.
Abstract: This paper presents a recognition system for isolated
words like robot commands. It’s carried out by Time Delay Neural
Networks; TDNN. To teleoperate a robot for specific tasks as turn,
close, etc… In industrial environment and taking into account the
noise coming from the machine. The choice of TDNN is based on its
generalization in terms of accuracy, in more it acts as a filter that
allows the passage of certain desirable frequency characteristics of
speech; the goal is to determine the parameters of this filter for
making an adaptable system to the variability of speech signal and to
noise especially, for this the back propagation technique was used in
learning phase. The approach was applied on commands pronounced
in two languages separately: The French and Arabic. The results for
two test bases of 300 spoken words for each one are 87%, 97.6% in
neutral environment and 77.67%, 92.67% when the white Gaussian
noisy was added with a SNR of 35 dB.

Abstract: This paper discusses the effectiveness of the EEG signal
for human identification using four or less of channels of two different
types of EEG recordings. Studies have shown that the EEG signal
has biometric potential because signal varies from person to person
and impossible to replicate and steal. Data were collected from 10
male subjects while resting with eyes open and eyes closed in 5
separate sessions conducted over a course of two weeks. Features
were extracted using the wavelet packet decomposition and analyzed
to obtain the feature vectors. Subsequently, the neural networks
algorithm was used to classify the feature vectors. Results show that,
whether or not the subjects- eyes were open are insignificant for a 4–
channel biometrics system with a classification rate of 81%. However,
for a 2–channel system, the P4 channel should not be included if data
is acquired with the subjects- eyes open. It was observed that for 2–
channel system using only the C3 and C4 channels, a classification
rate of 71% was achieved.

The results of this paper are new and they complement previously known results.
Abstract: This paper discusses the Urdu script characteristics,
Urdu Nastaleeq and a simple but a novel and robust technique to
recognize the printed Urdu script without a lexicon. Urdu being a
family of Arabic script is cursive and complex script in its nature, the
main complexity of Urdu compound/connected text is not its
connections but the forms/shapes the characters change when it is
placed at initial, middle or at the end of a word. The characters
recognition technique presented here is using the inherited
complexity of Urdu script to solve the problem. A word is scanned
and analyzed for the level of its complexity, the point where the level
of complexity changes is marked for a character, segmented and
feeded to Neural Networks. A prototype of the system has been
tested on Urdu text and currently achieves 93.4% accuracy on the
average.
Abstract: Artificial Neural Network (ANN)s can be modeled for
High Energy Particle analysis with special emphasis on shower core
location. The work describes the use of an ANN based system which
has been configured to predict locations of cores of showers in the
range 1010.5 to 1020.5 eV. The system receives density values as
inputs and generates coordinates of shower events recorded for values
captured by 20 core positions and 80 detectors in an area of 100
meters. Twenty ANNs are trained for the purpose and the positions
of shower events optimized by using cooperative ANN learning. The
results derived with variations of input upto 50% show success rates
in the range of 90s.
Abstract: This paper describes an automated event detection and location system for water distribution pipelines which is based upon low-cost sensor technology and signature analysis by an Artificial
Neural Network (ANN). The development of a low cost failure sensor which measures the opacity or cloudiness of the local water
flow has been designed, developed and validated, and an ANN based system is then described which uses time series data produced by
sensors to construct an empirical model for time series prediction and
classification of events. These two components have been installed,
tested and verified in an experimental site in a UK water distribution
system. Verification of the system has been achieved from a series of
simulated burst trials which have provided real data sets. It is concluded that the system has potential in water distribution network
management.
